WALK FOR GREEN
How often do you walk around the campus instead of getting straight onto the shuttle bus? The beauties of our campus deserve to be better explored and can best be explored on foot. Walking is also a greener and healthier alternative to using vehicles. To encourage more students and staff members to walk around the campus, our school has launched a new “Walk for Green” initiative.
Programme
Setting out from the MTR Station, “Walk for Green” recommends various walking routes on campus, one of which covers the YIA Building, LSK Building and LWS Building. Card readers for different walking routes have been installed (安装) to record the number of points completed by “Walk for Green” participants. Participants who collect 60 points within 30 days will be awarded the title “Green Walker”.
Participation
To participate, students and staff members would choose a marked route, and tap their school cards at the card readers installed at both the start and end points(and also at an intermediate card reader). Name, student/staff ID, department/unit, date, time and card readers tapped will be recorded.
Walking Journey Points
Important Notes:
● Walkers must complete one trip (either upwards or downwards) within one hour to score points.
● A total of up to six points can be earned each day.
Every time you take a walk on campus, you are helping to preserve our environment and also keeping yourself healthy. Let’s start from today!
1. Where does “Walk for Green” start?
A. YIA Building. B. LSK Building.
C. MTR Station. D. LWS Building.
2. What are participants required to do to score?
A. Collect at least 6 points. B. Choose a pre-set route.
C. Maintain a fixed speed. D. Complete a round trip.
3. How many points do you get daily by walking from YIA Building to LWS Building?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 6.

At US immigration (移民) check, my voice shook when I said, “My name is Chen Ying.” The long line that never ended and the damp air were nothing like what I thought my first time in the US would be. I tried hard to get my passport out to show my student visa. Meanwhile, the officer asked me many questions about who I am, my family, and my finance. This was the first time I had talked to someone in English with difficulty, and it made me too frightened to talk to anyone else after that.
After I got to Georgia, I joined Kennesaw State University’s Intensive English Program (IEP). I was shy and didn’t believe in my speaking or writing skills. On the first day of the program, I took a test: reading, listening, and grammar went well, but the writing question “Talk about an experience that helped you grow and what you learned from it” — stopped me. I couldn’t continue after a few words, feeling lost like someone in thick fog. The classroom was filled with the sound of pencils writing, but I just sat there stuck.
However, Ms. Cain smiled and told me she’d help. She gave me a book called On Writing Well by William Zinsser. One sentence from it — “Writing is about showing your thoughts...Use that energy to keep going” — made me want to try harder. She taught me to draw mind maps for essay topics, pick ideas I cared about for starters, and make essays with clear parts.
Before I met Ms. Cain, it took me more than two days to finish a two-page essay. With her help, I started to believe in myself. I could think of ideas easily and write with joy. I saw writing as a way to talk to myself and learn more about who I am. Those two months with her changed me a lot. I used to be scared of English, but now I’m into writing.
4. Why was Chen Ying scared at US immigration check?
A. She missed the student visa. B. She faced language difficulties.
C. She was treated with indifference. D. She was asked unusual questions.
5. What can we know about Chen’s first IEP test?
A. She gave up the test halfway. B. She wrote nothing in the end.
C. She copied her deskmate’s plot. D. She messed up the writing part.
6. How did Ms. Cain help Chen Ying with writing?
A. By inspiring her to read more. B. By advising her to write daily.
C. By teaching her useful skills. D. By assigning reciting practices.
7. What does Chen’s story show?
A. Every minute counts. B. Teaching is learning.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Time and tide wait for no man.
B 5. D 6. C 7. C

根据第一段中“This was the first time I had talked to someone in English with difficulty, and it made me too frightened to talk to anyone else after that.(这是我第一次用英语与人交流感到困难,这让我之后害怕和任何人说话)”可知,Chen Ying在移民局检查时害怕是因为她面临语言困难。
根据第二段中“On the first day of the program, I took a test: reading, listening, and grammar went well, but the writing question “Talk about an experience that helped you grow and what you learned from it” — stopped me. 【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“She taught me to draw mind maps for essay topics, pick ideas I cared about for starters, and make essays with clear parts.(她教我为作文题目画思维导图,首先挑选我在意的写作思路,并写出结构清晰的文章)”可知,Ms.

You might have seen a dog that really likes to play with toys. According to a recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports, some dogs show behaviors towards their toys similar to those of behavioral addictions in humans, such as internet gaming.
“An addiction means sticking to doing something though it has negative results in the long term,” says Stefanie Riemer, a behavioral biologist at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna and author of the new study. So, can dogs experience something similar with their toys?
To answer this question, Riemer and her team designed 14 different tests for 105 dogs (56 males, 49 females), with an age ranging from 12 months to 10 years. Different breed groups were tested, including shepherds, terriers and retrievers.
In one of the tests, for example, the dogs could choose between a favored toy that was difficult to get — such as in a box or on a shelf — and another type of reward or interaction, such as food or play with their owner. They found dogs that seemed addicted to the toy remained concentrated on it, trying to break the box or staying focused on the shelf, instead of going for the available reward.
In another test, the researchers analyzed whether and how a dog would calm down after toys, food, and everything else were taken away from the experimental room. Dogs that showed addiction-like behavior kept walking around for the entire duration of the test, says Riemer. “They would fixate on the door where the toys had disappeared from, or the shelves where the toys had been previously stored.”
Holly Molinaro, an animal welfare scientist at Animal Wellbeing Solutions, notes that the authors only hired and tested play-motivated dogs and dogs that excessively play, which makes it hard to know how common these behaviors are in the broader world of dogs. She says it’s an interesting starting point, but further research is needed.
8. What is the main purpose of the research?
A. To train dogs to control toy desire.
B. To prove that dogs prefer toys over food.
C. To compare smart dogs with stupid ones.
D. To study if dogs develop addictions to toys.
9. How do the researchers carry out the tests?
A. By studying male dogs’ daily habits.
B. By interviewing dog owners’ opinions.
C. By recording dogs’ preference for food.
D. By observing different dogs’ reactions to toys.
10. What does the underlined word “fixate on” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Focus closely on. B. Keep away from.
C. Look away from. D. Knock directly on.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. How Do Dogs Find Lost Toys? B. Why Do Dogs Love Toys?
C. Can Dogs Be Addicted to Toys? D. Should Dogs Play with Toys?
D 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第二段中“So, can dogs experience something similar with their toys?(那么,狗狗是否也会对玩具产生类似的行为呢?)”以及第三段中“To answer this question, Riemer and her team designed 14 different tests for 105 dogs (56 males, 49 females), with an age ranging from 12 months to 10 years.(为了回答这个问题,里默及其团队为105只狗(56 只雄性,49 只雌性)设计了14种不同的测试,这些狗的年龄在12个月到10岁之间)”可推知,研究的核心目的是解答狗狗是否会对玩具产生类似人类的成瘾行为这一问题。
根据第四段“In one of the tests, for example, the dogs could choose between a favored toy that was difficult to get — such as in a box or on a shelf — and another type of reward or interaction, such as food or play with their owner. They found dogs that seemed addicted to the toy remained concentrated on it, trying to break the box or staying focused on the shelf, instead of going for the available reward.(例如,在其中一项测试中,狗狗可以选择一个难以拿到的自己喜欢的玩具——比如藏在盒子里或架子上——或者另一种奖励或互动方式,比如食物或与主人玩耍。
根据第五段划线词前句“Dogs that showed addiction-like behavior kept walking around for the entire duration of the test, says Riemer.(里默尔表示,那些表现出类似成瘾行为的狗狗在整个测试期间一直四处走动)”以及划线词组所在句“They would fixate on the door where the toys had disappeared from, or the shelves where the toys had been previously stored.(它们会fixate on玩具消失的那扇门,或者之前存放玩具的货架不放眼离开)”可知,有类成瘾行为的狗狗会围着实验房转,紧盯着玩具被拿走的门或摆放过的架子,fixate on意为“紧盯;专注于”,与 A项Focus closely on“密切关注”同义。故选A项。
根据文章大意以及第一段“You might have seen a dog that really likes to play with toys. According to a recent study published in the journal Scientific Reports, some dogs show behaviors towards their toys similar to those of behavioral addictions in humans, such as internet gaming.(你可能见过一些非常喜欢玩玩具的狗狗。
D
I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Clearly, I am not alone. A 2024 survey found that about 67% of U.S. AI users are also polite and show gratitude toward AI search engines. Some even joked about the cost: if every polite word costs money, the bill must be high. Open AI’s CEO Sam Altman replied: “Tens of millions of dollars well spent — you never know.”
In reality, of course, AI chatbots do not appreciate politeness; they lack awareness, feelings or social needs. From a purely utilitarian (功利主义的) standpoint, all those pleases and thank-yous are just wasting money.
Still, there may be value that isn’t immediately measurable in showing gratitude toward AI. Psychologists Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough carried out an experiment in which they divided participants into three groups, asking the first to list things they are grateful for, while others listed daily troubles or simply kept journals. After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health.
What’s true of gratitude is also true of kindness and generosity more generally. Experiments at UC Riverside found that performing “five small acts of kindness per week” produced steady increases in happiness. This idea isn’t new. The medieval thinker Maimonides wrote that “it is better for a person to give one coin to a thousand poor people than to give a thousand coins to one person.” He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving charity and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue (美德) into a habit.
So perhaps all of our pleases and thank-yous to AI have value, even if they cost Open AI millions of dollars every year. Showing appreciation, even toward a machine, strengthens positive habits of courtesy (礼貌), patience and empathy. In our increasingly digital and automated world, preserving these human qualities may be more valuable than the cost of a few extra electricity. Finally, the beneficiary of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.
12. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By telling a story. B. By explaining an idea.
C. By mentioning an expert. D. By presenting a phenomenon.
13. What value of gratitude does the experiment in paragraph 3 show?
A. It strengthens our bodies and minds. B. It reduces daily stress levels.
C. It improves memory and creativity. D. It deepens social relationship.
14. Which of the following would Maimonides most likely agree with?
A. Giving gifts to friends on birthdays.
B. Making a large donation to a charity.
C. Expressing gratitude on Thanksgiving Day.
D. Volunteering weekly at a community kitchen.
15. What message does the author mainly want to express in the text?
A. Courtesy to AI saves electricity bills.
B. AI improves the quality of human life.
C. AI learns empathy from human behavior.
D. Politeness benefits humans rather than AI.
D 13. A 14. D 15. D
根据第一段中“I often catch myself asking my questions to AI chatbots with a “please” and a “thank you.” Clearly, I am not alone. A 2024 survey found that about 67% of U.S. AI users are also polite and show gratitude toward AI search engines.(我常常发现自己向AI聊天机器人提问时会加上“请”和“谢谢”。显然,我并不孤单。2024年的一项调查发现,约67%的美国AI用户也会对AI搜索引擎表现出礼貌和感激。)”可知,作者结合自身习惯和调查数据的结果,描述了当前社会中普遍存在的一种客观现象,是通过呈现一种现象来引入话题。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“After 10 weeks, they found that the first group reported 25% higher happiness levels, stronger inner strength and even better physical health.(10周后,他们发现第一组报告了高出25%的幸福水平、更强的内在力量甚至更好的身体健康。)”
根据第四段中“The medieval thinker Maimonides wrote that “it is better for a person to give one coin to a thousand poor people than to give a thousand coins to one person.” He believed that regular acts of goodness, like giving charity and expressing gratitude, make us happier in the long run by turning virtue (美德) into a habit.(中世纪思想家Maimonides曾写道:“一个人给一千个穷人各一文钱,胜于给一个人一千文钱。”他认为,诸如行善和表达感恩等日常善举,能将美德转化为习惯,在长远来看让我们更幸福。)”可知,Maimonides推崇的是“经常性、习惯性的小善举”,D项“每周在社区厨房做志愿者”属于定期的习惯,最符合他的理念。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一句“Finally, the beneficiary of our politeness isn’t the AI at all, but ourselves.(最终,我们礼貌的受益者根本不是AI,而是我们自己。)”

Get Your Ideas Flowing
Does scribbling (潦草地写) things in a notebook make you feel good? Notebooking can help you release thoughts and feelings and use your imagination to spark ideas and solve problems.
What is notebooking?
Notebooking is a way of getting your thoughts, ideas and opinions out of your head and onto paper. It’s a bit like writing a diary but besides words you can use doodles (涂鸦), drawings, pictures to record your thoughts. ____16____ They can be as neat and organized or as messy as you like. Children’s author David Almond uses notebooking to inspire his stories. He calls it a “scribbly, messy, lovely, joyful thing”.
How is notebooking good for you?
____17____ First, studies show that scribbling and writing can improve your memory and keep your brain alert. Doodling is also known to relieve stress and help you focus. When drawing freely you use a pen or pencil attached to the brain by nerves and muscles. ____18____ Therefore, it’s a great way to gather ideas for stories and projects too.
____19____
“I begin by making a mess,” says Almond. He recommends turning to a blank page and starting to scribble, doodle and write without being sure how it’s going to turn out. Using lots of color also helps your mind relax and your thoughts become clearer. “Instead of thinking, I’ve got to come up with something really interesting, you just relax, play around and these thoughts come to life,” he says. Another good thing about notebooking is that no one needs to see it. You don’t have to tell anyone what you’re doing. Almond says, “___20___”
A. How to get started?
B. When is notebooking flowing?
C. When it comes to notebooks, there are no rules.
D. It does contribute to your well-being in lots of ways.
E. This helps to reveal the thoughts and feelings you store in your mind.
F. You can play and mess about and discover the kind of things you’re really interested in.
G. You can write down small stories and collect beautiful sentences by means of notebooking.

C
