A Nobel Prize is considered by most people one of the highest international honours a person can receive. As you know, the prizes were started by Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and lived from 1833 to 1896.
Alfred Nobel was a chemist and inventor. He made two important inventions, so he became very rich. Although he was rich, Nobel was not a happy man. He never married or had children. Also, he was a sick man in a large part of his life. Nobel died at the age of sixty-three. When he died, he left a fund of $9,000,000. The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and the promotion of world peace.
The first Nobel Prizes were given on 10 December 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for their achievements. Albert Einstein was one of them.
Each prize has three parts. The first part is a gold medal. Second, a winner of a Nobel Prize is given a diploma saying that he has been given the Prize. The third part of the prize is a large amount of money — about $40,000.
Often a prize is given to just one person, but not always. Sometimes a prize is shared. It may be given to two or three people who have worked together. Sometimes a prize is not given at all if there is no outstanding achievements. In 1972, for example, no Nobel Peace Prize was given. It is the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm that decides whether to give the prize or not.

Have you ever run out of coffee or tea? Found no eggs in the fridge? No bread for the sandwich and the nearest shop is too far away? Well, all that can change in the future.
If all goes well, the intelligent future kitchen will soon help solve all your problems. In the future, all kitchen units will be connected to the Internet. The intelligent future kitchen will give wise advice on planning your menu for the day. Worried about your weight?-- It will tell you the right diet and what is good for your health. It will even keep in mind your likes and dislikes!
Designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this smart kitchen promises to pay attention to all your needs. The computer’s system will help keep an “eye” on the fridge. If the fridge is empty, the kitchen will automatically call and place an order at the local supermarket. So you don’t have to worry about it at all.
You get home late, and don’t know what to make from the collection of ingredients (原料) in your fridge. A while back you might have ordered a take-out but now, instead of worrying about eating a collection of this and that, you’re excited. You can pull out each vegetable, and pass each one in front of a web camera next to your fridge. A few moments later, a screen on your fridge would display a tasty recipe.
After dinner, you take your plates to a box next to the sink. You don't have to clean them, your machine does. It produces new plates every time you need to eat. Later in the evening, you phone your other half, who is on a business trip half-way around the world. As you drink your cup of hot coffee, it makes your other half’s cup change color on the other side of the world, another special way to keep in touch.
8. The problem mentioned in the first paragraph will be solved ______.
A. by the intelligent kitchen itself
B. by finding a good housekeeper
C. after you call the supermarket

D. can give a suitable recipe according to your ingredients

由下句“It is a habit that everyone can develop in life.(这是每个人在生活中都可以养成的习惯。)” 由此可以推断出,C选项“Aa a matter of fact, true self-confidence is neither born nor got overnight.(实际上自信既不是天生的也不是一夜间就能获得的。)”
由上文“Do not try to escape from them or cover them. Face them bravely.(不要试图逃离它们或掩盖它们,勇敢地面对它们。)”可知此处讲要勇敢面对缺点,由此可以推断出空处应该是承接上文,继续讲述如何勇敢面对缺点,B选项“Then talk about them to a reliable mate, a friend or a family member.(然后要和可信赖的人,比如朋友,家人等谈论这些缺点。)”
由下文“And therefore pay attention to your dress, display your unique physical advantages and exhibit your best image.(因此,注意你的衣着,展示你独特的身体优势,展示你最好的形象。) ”可知,此处指出穿戴打扮能够给人增添信心,由本句的“therefore”可知,空处与下句构成因果关系,所以A选项“Your appearance could put you into embarrassment(尴尬) or increase your confidence.(你的外表会让你陷入尴尬,或者增加你的自信。)”
分析文章结构可知,空处是本段小标题,由本段内容“You should break your routine that deals with the work passively (被动地). Focus your efforts immediately on overcoming it, because it will make your restless mind at ease and build your self-confidence.(你应该打破被动地处理工作的惯例。立即集中精力克服它,因为它会让你的不安的心情放松,并建立你的自信。)”可知,本段作者建议打破被动处理事情的惯例,要马上集中精力去处理不愿意做但不得不做的事情,在所有选项中只有F项“Don’t put off what you eventually have to do.(不要把你不愿意做但不得不做的事情推到最后去做。)”符合段意,故选F。
【16题详解】
根据本段的小标题“Be positive.(要积极乐观。)”和上文“Instead, you should speak positively about yourself, your progress, and your bright future.(相反,你应该积极地谈论你自己,你的进步,和你光明的未来。)”

Brenda was about to close up the post office when she saw an old man entering the door with a package in his hands. She checked the clock and it was only five minutes until closing time. She was more than ready to go home, so she decided not to receive the old man. “We’ve already closed. Come back on Monday,” she told him.
The old man refused to leave. “Please, ma’am. I need to send this package. I walked 4 miles in the rain to get here,” he begged. Brenda sighed and then asked the man to fill in the form. She noticed his hands shaking and his writing was impossible to read.
“Sir, write more clearly!” she yelled. Brenda stared at the clock. She was worried. She would be late to pick her child up from school, so she stepped outside and gave her husband a call.
Brenda was shivering (颤抖) from the cold. The old man came up to her and took his worn coat off and offered it to her. “It’s cold here. Use my coat to warm you,” he said kindly. Brenda looked at the man and saw that underneath the coat, he only had a thin V-neck shirt on. Then she noticed he had a pacemaker—a device that regulates a person’s heartbeat. It was the same as her late father used to have, too.
She realised she had been rude to somebody who was her father’s age. Brenda looked at the old man with sympathy. She realised she had taken out all of her anger on him, even though he did not deserve it.
“Sir, what is your name? Come, let’s process your package,” she said. “Thank you, dear. My name is William,” he replied as they walked inside together. “My daughter turns 50 tomorrow. I want to get her something special because it’s difficult for me to visit her. I saved up for it, and I’m worried it won’t arrive on time,” he added.

Brenda knew that it was already too late for the package to arrive the next day. She checked the receiver’s address that William had written own. It was two hours away, “I hate to break it to you, sir, but this package would arrive late if we process it here. We’ve already sent out our next-day delivery packages. This would be delivered in two days.” Brenda told him, William’s face formed a frown, and he sighed in defeat. Brenda started to pack up, handing the box back to William. She got her bag and asked her colleague to lock up the post office. “Come with me.” she told him.
They walked towards her car, and she asked William to get in the car. “Where are we going?” he asked her. “We’re going to your daughter’s house to celebrate this milestone birthday with her in person,” Brenda said with a smile. They drove two hours to get to the lady’s house, and Brenda couldn’t hold back her tears when she saw the happy daughter was reunited with her dad. There was a feast for Brenda and William to enjoy that night. The man’s daughter celebrated her birthday early, and it was the happiest day for Brenda William and his daughter.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Brenda knew that it was already too late for the package to arrive the next day.
