When Tom was a child, the river behind his village was his favorite place. He’d swim in its clear water, chase fish, and watch dragonflies dance above the waves. But five years ago, a small factory opened nearby. Waste water from the factory flowed into the river secretly. Soon, the water turned dark green, and a terrible smell filled the air. Fish disappeared, and even the reeds along the bank withered.
“I can’t let this happen,” Tom, now a high school student, said to himself. He remembered his science teacher saying that polluted water harms both soil and people’s health. He talked to the village head, showing photos of the river before and after the pollution. The head sighed: “The factory brings income to the village.”
Tom didn’t give up. He organized his classmates into a “River Protection Team.” They picked up trash along the river every weekend and put up signs that read “Protect Our River.” They also wrote a letter to the factory owner, attaching their photos of cleaning the river in the rain. At first, the owner ignored them. But when he saw the kids working tirelessly, he finally agreed to install a water treatment system.
Three months later, the river began to clear. Last week, Tom saw a group of small fish swimming near the bank. “It’s smiling again,” he thought.
4. Why did the river turn dark green?
A. The reeds withered and polluted it.
B. The factory poured waste water into it.
C. Too many fish died in the river.
D. Villagers threw trash into it.
5. What did Tom’s team NOT do to protect the river?
A. They picked up trash along the river.
B. They put up protective signs.
C. They closed the factory with the village head.
D. They wrote a letter to the factory owner.
6. The underlined word “withered” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.
A. grew taller B. turned green C. dried up D. spread out
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. Factories should never be built in villages.
B. Small actions can make a difference to the environment.
C. Only students can protect the environment.
D. The river was never clean even in Tom’s childhood.
B 5. C 6. C 7. B
根据第一段中“But five years ago, a small factory opened nearby. Waste water from the factory flowed into the river secretly. Soon, the water turned dark green, and a terrible smell filled the air.(但五年前,附近开了一家小工厂。工厂的废水偷偷流入河里。很快,水变成了深绿色,空气中弥漫着一股难闻的气味)”可知,河水变成深绿色是因为工厂把废水排进了河里。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“They picked up trash along the river every weekend and put up signs that read “Protect Our River.” They also wrote a letter to the factory owner, attaching their photos of cleaning the river in the rain.(他们每个周末都在河边捡垃圾,并竖起“保护我们的河流”的牌子。他们还给工厂老板写了一封信,附上他们在雨中清理河流的照片)”可知,Tom的团队为了保护河流,在河边捡垃圾、竖起保护标志、给工厂老板写信,C项“他们和村长一起关闭了工厂”并未提及。故选C项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前文“Soon, the water turned dark green, and a terrible smell filled the air. Fish disappeared(很快,水变成了深绿色,空气中弥漫着一股难闻的气味。鱼消失了)”可知,河水被污染,鱼消失了,由此可推知,岸边的芦苇也枯萎了,故划线词withered意思是“枯萎”,与C项“dried up”同义。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,结合第三段“Tom didn’t give up. He organized his classmates into a “River Protection Team.” They picked up trash along the river every weekend and put up signs that read “Protect Our River.” They also wrote a letter to the factory owner, attaching their photos of cleaning the river in the rain. At first, the owner ignored them. But when he saw the kids working tirelessly, he finally agreed to install a water treatment system.(Tom没有放弃。他组织同学们成立了“护河队”。他们每个周末都在河边捡垃圾,并竖起“保护我们的河流”的牌子。他们还给工厂老板写了一封信,附上他们在雨中清理河流的照片。起初,老板不理睬他们。但当他看到孩子们不知疲倦地工作时,他最终同意安装污水处理系统)”和最后一段“ Three months later, the river began to clear. Last week, Tom saw a group of small fish swimming near the bank. “It’s smiling again,” he thought.(三个月后,河水开始变清。上周,Tom看到一群小鱼在岸边游来游去。“它又笑了,”他想)”可知,文章讲述了Tom组织同学成立“护河队”,促使工厂安装污水处理系统,村后的河水逐渐恢复清澈的故事。所以我们能从这个故事中学到:小小的行动也能对环境产生影响。故选B项。

Every year, thousands of teenagers take part in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life? A new report suggests that the answer is yes - and finds that graduates of arts-based museum programs credit them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the fact.
The Whitney Museum of American Art the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles recently asked researchers to carry out a study to find out how effective their long-standing teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former members of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Nearly 55 percent thought that it was one of the most important experiences they’ d ever had, regardless of (不管) age and two-thirds said that they were often in situations where then experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts.
It turns out that taking part in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic (热情的) about arts even after they reach adulthood: 96 percent of participants (参与者) had visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent had visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years. Thirty-two percent of program graduates work in the arts as adults.
Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the impact (影响) of teen-specific art programs in museums, it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts. A decade of surveys the National Endowment for the Arts found that childhood experience with the arts have linked arts education to everything from lower drop-out rates to improvement in critical thinking skills.

Everyone gets angry from time to time. Many situations make us feel angry, such as arguments with your brother, difficulties with your schoolwork, or feeling misunderstood, and many others.
Anger is not always a bad thing. It may be helpful if it inspires us to meet a challenge or correct something that has gone wrong. It can also help us work harder to master a skill, to overcome a personal weakness, or stand up for what we believe in. On the other hand, anger may be harmful, especially if there is much more than reasonable.
Anger may be outward or inward. Outward expressions of anger include some behaviors, such as shouting at someone, throwing things, or physically attacking others. Inward expressions of anger are times in which anger just exists without us being aware of how angry we are. In either case, anger may have a bad effect on our health, relationships, and daily activities.
As parents, you have a very great influence on your kids’ behavior. No matter how old, your children are watching and learning from you, which leads to your kids using similar ways to react to all sorts of situations. So, if you let your anger get in or out of control in response to an event, your kid especially young children are more likely to see this as a model, and repeat it in their own way.
Managing anger is important both for your own life and for your kids’ development. If you lose control of your anger in front of your kids, it’s wise to have a conversation and apologize for the way you reacted once you are calm — even if it has nothing to do with your children.
If your anger or your child’s anger is working against you, there are many effective ways to manage it.
12. What is the attitude of the writer towards anger? _________
A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
13. What can be inferred from the passage? _________
A. Anger inwards is more harmful than that outwards.
B. The adult children can do the same as their parents.
C. Parents have a good or bad effect on their children.
D. Parents are usually able to get their anger in control.
14. If you get angry in front of your children, what should you do according to the writer? _________
A. Decide if it’s helpful to your children. B. Discuss whether you should be angry.
C. Make an explanation to your children. D. Make an apology for your being angry.
15. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraphs? _________
A. The possible reaction to your apology. B. Many effective ways to deal with anger.
C. The importance to manage anger for you. D. The proper time to talk with your children.
B 13. C 14. D 15. B

根据第二段“Anger is not always a bad thing. It may be helpful if it inspires us to meet a challenge or correct something that has gone wrong. It can also help us work harder to master a skill, to overcome a personal weakness, or stand up for what we believe in. On the other hand, anger may be harmful, especially if there is much more than reasonable.(愤怒并不总是一件坏事。

A. grew taller B. turned green C. dried up D. spread out
7. What can we learn from the story?
A Factories should never be built in villages.
B. Small actions can make a difference to the environment.
C. Only students can protect the environment.
D. The river was never clean even in Tom’s childhood.
C
Every year, thousands of teenagers take part in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life? A new report suggests that the answer is yes - and finds that graduates of arts-based museum programs credit them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the fact.
The Whitney Museum of American Art the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles recently asked researchers to carry out a study to find out how effective their long-standing teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former members of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Graduates, whose current ages are from 18 to 36, were invited to be the subjects (对象) of the study to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.
Among the graduates surveyed, 75 percent of graduates rated (排名) die teen program experience as the most favorable impact on their own lives, beating family, school and their neighborhoods.
