For young people who grow up in villages, a job in the city sounds good. But Ning Fenfang, 34, left the big city to be a farmer.
In 2017, she left her job in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and went back to her hometown of Cili County in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. At that time, much of the farmland there was deserted. Seeing this, Ning decided to be a farmer. She started with growing rice and oilseed rape (油菜) in 2020. She rented the land and hired villagers to work it.
Ning now farms more than 66.7 hectares of land. More than 300 housewives have worked part-time on her land, each making more than 10,000 yuan per year.
“It’s never easy,” said Ning. At first, many people didn’t understand her decision. Farming is often seen as an “unsuitable” job for both the post-90s generation and women in general. Also, she lacked enough farming knowledge. However, Ning loved farming.
“When you’re tired, you can stop and rest and do what you want to do. Every day, you can embrace nature, which is the poetry and far afield (诗和远方) that many people hope for,” Ning told the People’s Courts News and Communication Agency.
Ning has tried to turn farming into a “fashionable” job. Rather than depending on farmers, she advises mechanized (机械化) farming, which means using high-tech machines. She also plans to provide children living in cities with a chance to experience farming.
Ning feels responsible for farmers. Recently she has suggested that the agricultural insurance (农业保险) plans should include greenhouses, as freezing rain hit her hometown and caused losses to farmers in the winter of 2023.
31. Why did Ning decide to become a farmer?
A. To make money. B. To live a quiet life. C. To realize her dream. D. To make use of the deserted farmland.
32. How did people feel about Ning’s decision at first?
A. Happy. B. Puzzled. C. Surprised. D. Worried.
33. What does the underlined word “lacked” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. 学习 B. 准备 C. 缺少 D. 掌握
34. What can we learn from Ning’s words in Paragraph 5?
A. Farming brings her great pleasure. B. It's tiring to take up farming.
C. She needs to take a rest. D. Many people hope to be farmers.
35. What is Ning like according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Friendly and humorous. B. Creative and responsible. C. Strict and hard-working. D. Brave and careful.

Cassy made a plan for her and Emmeline. No one wanted to go to the attic (阁楼) in Legree’s house because everyone thought it was full of ghosts and Legree was afraid of ghosts. Cassy’s room was under it. One day, Cassy moved all her furniture to a room very far from it. When Legree asked why, she replied, “I can’t sleep. There were noises in the attic, every night, from midnight until the morning.”
“Noises in the attic?” said Legree, worried, “Who is up there?”
“I don’t know,” said Cassy and she went to her room.
Then she put things in the attic that made strange noises when the wind blew. The slaves (奴隶) heard them and started talking about ghosts. Legree became scared of passing near the stairs to the attic. Then one night Cassy and Emmeline ran away. They stayed near the house and waited. When Legree left to look for them with his slaves and dogs, Cassy and Emmeline went into the attic. Legree was angry when he came back and he was sure that Tom knew something.
“Tom,” said Legree,“tell me where those two are, or I will kill you. Speak!”
“I have nothing to say,” said Tom.
“Are you telling me that you don’t know?”
“I know, but I can’t tell you.”
Legree hit Tom and kicked him again and again, until he thought Tom was dead. Then he left. But Tom was not dead. Cassy and Emmeline stayed in the attic for days, until Legree stopped looking for them. Then one night they escaped again and nobody followed them. They were free.
Two days later, a young man arrived. He was George Shelley. When he received the letter from Miss Ophelia, he went looking for Tom to buy him back, but it took a long time to find him.
Legree took George to see Tom. Tom was lying on the floor, waiting to die. When George saw him, he felt sick.
“Uncle Tom, my poor, poor friend!”
Tom opened his eyes. “Master George. You remembered me! It’s going well.”aid Tom and then he closed his eyes forever.
When George turned, Legree was standing behind him. George hit Legree so hard that he fell to the ground. Then ____36____.

This morning, I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”. In the article, people from different backgrounds said that the public should be against the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. So we should stop accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologized (道歉) for the accident, but the families of the passenger said it was not enough. However, the company still claimed (声称) that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural (乡村的) America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They support a simple life with an emphasis (强调) on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries (奢侈品) or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish's quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programmes give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding chances in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.
Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. Nevertheless, I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.
39. Why does the writer introduce the title of the article from the newspaper?
A. To give examples. B. To express his wish. C. To show the main idea. D. To lead in the topic.
40. Which of the following is true according to this passage?
A. A passenger was seriously wounded in a car accident in driverless mode.
B. Building large networks through social media helps us find new chances.
C. People from different backgrounds said that new technology was necessary.
D. The Amish avoid new technology because they do not want to have good lives.

Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or lasting humid (潮湿的) weather? Hui nan tian is a special weather phenomenon (现象) in southern China. It normally appears in spring when temperatures begin to warm up and humidity quickly increases. Before it arrives, there have usually been a few cold days, with a temperature below 12℃. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature rises, creating a lot of water vapor. Small water droplets can be seen on windows and walls.
During hui nan tian, the humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (细菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet, and sofas can get moldy. Electrical equipment like televisions may break down when they get wet inside, which can be dangerous for people when turning them on. It can also make people feel tired and sick. Catching a cold is common during this time.
To cut down on the trouble caused by the lasting humid weather, scientists suggest that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening, especially those facing south and southeast. At the same time, they should use an air conditioner to dry the room instead of mopping floors. It’s also useful to put newspapers on the floor, on tables, and at the door to take in water and wet air.

A. To make money. B. To live a quiet life. C. To realize her dream. D. To make use of the deserted farmland.

This morning I saw the shocking headline: “Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”.
