Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated,
救
and what kind of job prospects()they thought they had.
Considering that I teach students who are trained to be doctors,I was surprised to find that most
thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without "outside help"."What kind
of help is that?"I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to
闲
help them out.
Surger(外科手术)”,one replied.I was pretty shocked by that response. It seems that the
铭
graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it
comes to getting a job.One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height.
"They break your legs, put in special things, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the
bone as it regrows. You can get at least 5cm taller!"
At that point,I was shocked.I am short.I can't deny that,but I don't think I would put myself
through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller.I don't even bother to wear shoes with
thick soles ()as I'm not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!
It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting "perfection",and that is an ideal that just
does not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, however, magazines,TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall,
beautiful people as being the norm().Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and
cosmetic surgery(整容手术)clinics fill the pages of newspapers,.further creating an idea that
perfection"is a requirement, and that you must go for it,no matter what the cost.In my opinion,
skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.
56.In the author's opinion,"outside help"means

A,everyone should go for perfection, whatever the cost
B.it's right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C.it is-one's appearance instead of skills that really matters in one's career
D.media should be criticised for misleading young people to do surgery
60.What does the author think of his height?
A.He dislikes being called a short man.
B.He tries to increase his height through surgery.
C.He just accepts it as it is.
D.He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.

This morning,I saw the shocking headline:"Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless
Mode".In the various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless
cars. They said that scme advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous.
Hence,we shouldeesaccepting technology just because it is new.The newspaper reported that the car
company had already apologised for the accident, but the families of the deceased (said it was not
enough.Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars
one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily
the absence of new technology..Probably the most well known are the Amish(亚米希人),a group of
Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV,or use the Internet. They
have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in
the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community.
They think that is betier than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It
could even be argued that the Amish's quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the
natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
'On the'other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the
years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programmes give people lots of warnings
about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible
for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also
made finding opportunities in life much easier,as it allows people to make larger networks of friends

through using social media.
Personally,I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances.I found my career as an
AI designer through a.social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also
helped me get into the best shape of my life.Of course, when ncw technology changes the way we
live,it can be a scary prospect.Nevertheless,I will always look on the positive side of change and
accept it rather than resist it.

In our daily lives,we often hear about the benefits of exercise for our physical health. But have
you ever wondered about its effect on our memory?Well,a recent study from University College
London has some interesting findings.
The researchers discovered that30 minutes of moderate to vigorous((充满活力的)physical
activity, along with at least six hours of sleep at night, could potentially lead to an improvement in
cognitive (performance the following day. This means that activities like cycling to work
or going for a walk in the morning might not only make you feel good for the day but also have a
positive impact on your memory the next day.
Previous studies on the short-term effects of physical activity were mostly done in laboratories
and focused on short time frames. However, this new study observed the real-life physical activity of
76 adults aged50一83,who did not have cognitive impairment(缺陷)or dementia(痴呆).These
participants wore an accelerometer(加速度计)for eight days to track their sleep and physical
activity. They also took simple online cognitive tests daily to measure their attention, memory, and
processing speed.
The results showed that each 30-minute increase in physical activity corresponded to a 2%-
5%increase in episodic(片段式的)and working memory scores the next day..But when sleep data
was considered, only the working memory score improvement remained significant. The study also
学期高三年级二次月考英语学科考试
found that more sedentary(久坐不a动的)behavior was associated with a drop in working memory
scores, while getting enough sleep led to better scores in episodic memory and other aspects.
Despite these findings, the study had its limitations. The participants were generally well-educated
and had good health and high levels of daily physical activity, which might not ropresent the entire
population. Also, the exact reason why exercise affects memory the next day is still unclear,as the
benefits from neurotransmitters(t神经递质)are thought to be short-lived.
In conclusion, while we still have more to learn, this study suggests that staying active and getting
enough sleep could be beneficial for our brain health and memory. So,let's put on our running shoes
and hit the sack early to give our brains a boost!
66.What did the University College London study find?
A.Any amount of exercise improves memory immediately.
B.Only intense exercise affects memory.
C.Thirty minutes of exercise and proper sleep may enhance next-day cognitive ability.
D.Sleep has no connection to memory improvement.
67.How was this study different from previous ones?
A.It involved a larger number of participants
B.It focused only on the long-term effects.
C.It only studied younger people.
D.It was based on real-life activity tracking.
68.What were the participants asked to do in the study?
A.
Wear a device and do cognitive tests.
B.Exercise for a fixed time every day.
C.Change their diet drastically.
D.Avoid all sedentary activities.
69.What are the limitations of the study?
A.The participants were all athletes.
B.The participants had specific characteristics.
C.It didn't consider the role of diet.
D.It was too expensive to conduct.
70.What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To explain the physiological mechanisms
B.To criticize the study's limitations
C.To propose directions for future research
D.To suggest practical applications of the findings
