Rule:If it's a large,wild animal that you aren't in any way trained to deal with,then don't
touch it.don't get close to it,and for the love of God,don't risk your life to take a selfie
with it.That's a lesson that I learned last week when I was visiting Yellow stone

didn't keep attacking me and ran away.
My mother immediately came to me and some passers-by came to me,too.Luckily,my

Joe jumped on a Lime e-scooter(电动滑板车)and went to a supermarket. At the end
of the ride,a message appeared on the screen:"Your ride was carbon-free."These words
showed the environment-friendly marketing of e-scooter companies like Lime and Bird. But
Joe,then a graduate student, and his adviser,Johnson had doubts about them.
E-scooters,which you can unlock with an app and leave wherever you like have
appeared in cities over the last two years.Sure, they don't produce waste gases."But you
have to think about the other things that are required to have the e-scooter charged
)and ready for you to usc,"Johnson said.So he and his students decided to work out the
full environmental influence of c-scooters over their lifetimes. The results suggest
e-scooters aren't quite as environment-friendly as they may seem.

The researchers bought an e-scooter and separated it into parts. They worked out the
greenhouse gas emissions()while people make it.They also looked at the resulting air
and water pollution. Those influences were great. They found that materials and production
accounted for()about half of the e-scooter's global warming influence.
Those results depend heavily on e-scooters long life.Bird's first e-scooters lasted about
3-4 months, and the newer Bird Zeros are said to make it to about 10 months. However one
study found that e-scooters in Louisville,Kentucky, only survived about 29-days.If such
short lifetimes are common,it would worsen the true influence of materials and production
mentioned above,Johnson said.
The researchers also found that the nightly collection and redistribution(重新分配)of
e-scooters accounted for 43%of their global warming influence.Electricity for charging the
e-scooters accounted for just 5%,and shipping even less.Luckily, there are ways to reduce
the environmental influence of e-scooters.They suggest that companies take steps to
increase e-scooters'lifetimes.They also suggest simplifying the collection process. Not
every e-scooter needs to be picked up.About one in six e-scooters still had a full charge at
the end of the day.

When people think of New York City, most of them probably picture the attractive
lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway,Times Square and other tourist
attractions. However, there is another side of New York City. The summer after tenth grade,
I went with my group on a mission to New York City for a week.
I had always known that poverty existed in major cities, but you had never seen it to a
degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small
groups.One day,we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me.I couldn't
believe my eyes.We saw people from all walks of life.We met people who came there
because they had no jobs,no home and no money.
Another day,we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some
cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see
how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story.Whatever their stories were, there
was a common thread we saw in them-hope and thanks. These were people who had
nothing, yet they were so hopeful about their futures and they were thanking us.
My experience during that summer changed my life.I used to picture my future as
containing a big house and a lot of money, but now I see my future as helping others. After
college,I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with
the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.
