In the middle of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, Amanda Barrows carefully placed a wooden nightstand (床头柜) on the ground. She attached a sign reading, “Take a poem, leave a poem.”
So far, more than 100 poems have come in. “It’s completely unexpected,” said Barrows. “I’m really impressed by the outpouring of support.”
A park ranger (护林人) by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined a Poetry for the People class at City College of San Francisco (CCSF). Students were asked to find a way to “bring poetry into the community” as their final project.
In the beginning, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. Eventually, though, it dawned on her that she could perhaps combine together her two worlds — parks and poetry. A colleague offered up a weathered nightstand, which Barrows thought would be the perfect tool for her project, as she could fill the drawer at the top with fresh paper and pens and add a box at the bottom for poems.
The concept reminded her of Little Free Libraries, which featured bookstands stationed across the city. “I was inspired by the little free libraries you see in San Francisco (SF), where you ‘take a book, leave a book’, and thought, ‘Maybe I could do this with poetry.’” said Barrows. Since she only had a single nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department manages about 220 parks, and Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all of them.
Since the Poetry Nightstand project started, people have donated a wide range of writing. Barrows has shared most of the submissions on social media. “It really is a community project,” Barrows said. “It belongs to all of us.”
One of the teachers at the CCSF poetry course, Lauren Muller, told The Washington Post that “people need poetry now”, which she suggested as the reason for the success of Barrows’s project.
24. Why did Barrows start the Poetry Nightstand project?
A. To share her own poems. B. To advertise a poetry class.
C. To encourage young poets. D. To complete a required task.
25. How did Barrows’s project differ from Little Free Libraries?
A. It wasn’t well-received by the public. B. It wasn’t fixed on a specific site.
C. It covered a larger area in the city. D. It was only open to citizens of SF.
26. What did Muller think contributed to the success of Barrows’s project?
A. The benefits of writing poetry. B. The public demand for poetry.
C. The help from her neighbors. D. The large number of parks in SF.
27. Which of the following words best describe Barrows?
A Courageous and calm. B. Enthusiastic and kind.
C. Creative and ambitious. D. Cooperative and generous.

Our clothes do a lot for us. They keep us warm in the winter or cool while we` re working out. They let us dress to impress or comfortably relax on the couch. But some researchers think our clothes could be doing even more. Those scientists and engineers are dreaming up new ways to make clothes safer, more comfortable and convenient.
Some ideas for new clothing aim to protect people from harm. A new fabric coating could absorb some chemical weapons. That coating is made from a metal-organic framework that breaks down harmful mixtures. It could offer people in war-torn countries protection.
Not all advanced clothes are designed to save lives. Some could just make clothes more comfortable. Fabric integrated with nanowires (纳米线) could reflect your body heat back onto your skin. Electric current running through those metal threads could provide warmth. too. This may be especially useful for hikers, soldiers or others working in super cold conditions. On the flip side, another new fabric traps very little body heat. Tiny holes in this material let infrared waves (红外波) pass through. Those waves carry heat away from your body to keep you cool.
Some researchers have dreamt up wholly new uses for clothing — like turning wearers into walking power outlets. Flexible solar panels sewn into fabric could soak up the sun to recharge phones or other devices on the go. And some types of fabric could harvest energy directly from a wearer’s motion. While some fabrics help charge devices, others could serve as devices themselves. In one recent experiment, researchers sewed conductive thread into a T-shirt. This turned the shirt into a device that could send signals to a smartphone. Another team threaded fabric with magnetized copper and silver to write data into fabrics. Such data-packed fabric could be used as a hands-free key or form of ID.
Many of these ideas have not yet left the lab, but inventors hope these and other innovations could someday let you get more from your wardrobe.
28. What is the function of the coating in Paragraph 2?
A. To give off harmful chemicals. B. To absorb energy from chemicals.
C. To make clothes more comfortable. D. To protect people from chemical weapons.
29. What do the underlined words “on the flip side” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. In addition. B. On the other hand.
C. In this way. D. As a consequence.
30. What transforms the T-shirt into a device?
A. Precious metal. B. A wearer’s motion.
C. Flexible solar panels. D. Conductive thread.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future of smart clothing. B. The new devices used to make clothes.
C. The new materials in clothing industry. D. The creative clothes from your wardrobe.

The skies over Latin America’s largest city are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around São Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.
Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive of the Dublin-based firm Avolon, which will provide the aircraft to Gol and recently placed an order for 500 of the aircraft from their British manufacturer, admitted helicopters were the “kingdom of the wealthiest”.
But the Avolon boss claimed the introduction of VA-X4 eVTOLs (electric vertical(垂直的) takeoff and landing) aircraft to São Paulo would be a gamechanger for regular passengers once the taxis, which look like a futuristic cross between a helicopter and a glider, were delivered in late 2024 or 2025.
“Our basic estimate (估计) at the moment is that the operating cost here for this aircraft will be equal to $1 per passenger over a 25-mile trip,” Slattery told the Financial Times. “Which is almost equal to an Uber ride.”
Few cities are crying out for such a revolution more than São Paulo, a sprawling metropolis with more than 12 million citizens and choked by a fleet of 8.6m vehicles.
In the late 1990s, the congestion (拥塞) became so bad in what is now the world’s fifth biggest city after Tokyo, Delhi, Seoul and Shanghai that authorities were forced to introduce a number plate rotation (循环) system for vehicles.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, the head of the British aerospace manufacturer that produces the aircraft, Vertical Aerospace, said the flying taxis would be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city and will “transform how we travel around high population density cities that are crowded with traffic”.
The Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace was founded in 2016 and promises to pioneer “a new era in vertical transport”.
“We’ll be looking to Asia after São Paulo,” Avolon’s chief commercial officer, Paul Geaney, told Reuters.
32. What did Dómhnal Slattery think of helicopters?
A. They could be afforded by all.
B. They could be mostly used by the rich.
C. They provided convenience for travellers.
D. They showed the owners’ social status.
33. What is the advantage of electric air taxis?
A. Eco-friendliness. B. Traditional design.
C. Zero noise. D. Free delivery.
34. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. The flying taxis will be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city.
B. More cities are eager for electric air taxis than São Paulo.
C. The Avolon will enter the Asian transportation market soon.
D. Travelling by VA-X4 eVTOLs can be more convenient but more expensive than by Uber.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Uber Ride—a futuristic aerospace revolution
B. Advanced vertical aircrafts ordered by the Avolon Company
C. VA-X4 eVTOLs—a lifesaver for high population density cities
D. Electric air taxis to make their first appearance in Brazil’s most congested city

Why does one plus one equal two? ____36____ This question has been frustrating children for generations.
It is quite right to feel frustrated. Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow. ____37____ However, my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them. Both of those impulses play an important role in advancing human understanding, and in particular mathematical understanding. So rather than think about why one plus one is two, let’s go a little further and question whether it’s even true all the time.
One plus one can equal more than two because of reproduction. Say you put one rabbit and another rabbit together. You might well end up with a lot of rabbits. ____38____ If one pair of tennis players gets together with another pair for an afternoon of tennis, there ends up being more than two pairs of tennis players because they could play each other in all sorts of different combinations. So one pair of tennis players plus another pair makes six pairs.
____39____ If you put a pile of sand on top of another pile of sand, then you just get one pile of sand. Or, as an art student of mine pointed out, if you mix one color with one color, you get one color.
I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers. It’s not a place where the answers are fixed and we’re supposed to know them. And I hope we will place more emphasis on those who are curious, and who follow their curiosity on a journey. ____40____
A. This is an easy question.
B. It seems rigid and boring.
C. Sometimes, one plus one is just one.
D. One possible answer is “It just does! ”
E. It’s a quiet walk rather than a race to the finish.
F. Math isn’t really about getting the right answer.
G. Apart from that, things may be more complicated.

Charles and I were walking to school, just like any other day. “I brought my new game player today!” Charles said. I envied (羡慕) him as his father was a millionaire and got him whatever he wanted.
The first lesson of the day was Maths. During the lesson, Mrs. Smith was talking on and on. Charles asked for permission to go to the toilet and was not at his seat. Then, from the comer of my eyes, I spotted his game player lying in the desk. A plan flashed through my mind. “Maybe I can play with it for a while. I’m sure Charles wouldn’t mind.” Like a dog with two tails, I grabbed it and played under the desk.
“Joseph! Answer my question!” Hearing this, I almost jumped out of my seat. “Uh…” I was awkward, my cheeks turning red as whispers grew within my class. When I stood up nervously, the game player slipped (from my hands and dropped onto the floor. I looked down and to my horror, the screen had broken into pieces. “What’s that?” Mrs. Smith questioned, and I felt my blood freeze.
At the worst possible moment, the wooden door of our classroom was opened. Charles returned from the toilet. Seeing that his game player was in pieces on the floor, he was shaking with anger. “I’m…I’m sorry, Charles!” I whispered, my eyes fixed on the floor. Not in the mood to listen, he yelled, “What good is an apology? You can’t make my game player good as new!” The class turned silent and all eyes were on us. Feeling more awkward, I said something that I wouldn’t say again.

M: Cool. What’s happening across the street? I saw that the local TV stations are all set up there.
W: That’s where all the dancing and sports events will take place. This area is for families. I’ve saved us this spot on the grass here.

W: I don’t know, Brad. I know one thing: I don’t like the one on the 69th Street.
M: Neither do I. Let’s cross that one off. We have the 74th Street one and the 80th Street one left.
W: The one on the 80th Street has a better view, and a very cheerful kitchen.
M: Yes, and I like the carpeting in the hall, which is clean. But there is no good place to put a desk.
W: Oh, Brad, what about the apartment on the 74th Street? It has a dining area. We could eat in the kitchen, and put the desk in the dining area.
M: Yes, that sounds OK. But what I don’t like about that place is the west window. It gets quite hot in the late afternoon with the sun beating down on the window.
W: Didn’t you notice the air conditioner?
M: No. Was there one?
W: Yes. And we could improve on the window, too.
M: That place does have the best parking facilities of the three.
W: Yes. I think that apartment is best for our needs. There’s a good parking lot.
M: OK. Let’s take that one.

W: Hello. Welcome to our computer class for beginners. Typing skills are required for this course. In a moment you’ll begin typing the text I’ve placed on the stand next to each keyboard. First, however, I’d like you to look at the screen in front of you. There are no words on it, but it does contain two important objects, the end mark and the action point. You’ll be learning more about these later. Right now, please place your fingers on the keyboard and prepare to use it as if you were a typewriter. For example, to type capital letters, hold down the shift key. Don't stop typing at the end of a line. When you type a word that is too long to fit at the end of the current line, the computer will automatically move the word to the beginning of the next line. If you make a mistake while typing the text, you can correct it by using the backspace key. Now please prepare to begin typing.

A. Courageous and calm. B. Enthusiastic and kind.
C. Creative and ambitious. D. Cooperative and generous.
D 25. B 26. B 27. C
根据第三段“A park ranger (护林人) by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined a Poetry for the People class at City College of San Francisco (CCSF). Students were asked to find a way to “bring poetry into the community” as their final project.( 巴罗斯白天是公园管理员,晚上是诗人,他参加了旧金山城市学院的“为人民写诗”课程。学生们被要求找到一种“将诗歌带入社区”的方法作为他们的期末项目)”可知,巴罗斯开始Poetry Nightstand项目是为了完成诗歌课程布置的任务。故选D。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“The concept reminded her of Little Free Libraries, which featured bookstands stationed across the city.( 这个概念让她想起了小型免费图书馆,它的特色是遍布全城的书柜)”可知,Little Free Libraries遍布全城。再根据该段中的“Since she only had a single nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department manages about 220 parks, and Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all of them.( 由于她只有一个床头柜,巴罗斯决定把它放在公园里四天,然后把它搬到一个新的地方。旧金山的娱乐和公园部门管理着大约220个公园,巴罗斯的目标是把诗歌床头柜带到所有的公园)”可知,巴罗斯只有一个床头柜可以使用,她先把它在一个公园里放四天,然后再搬到其他新的地方,她的目标是将这个床头柜带到所有公园,因此她的项目是流动的,而非固定在某个特定地点。故选B。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“One of the teachers at the CCSF poetry course, Lauren Muller, told The Washington Post that“people need poetry now”, which she suggested as the reason for the success of Barrows’s project.( CCSF诗歌课程的一位老师劳伦·穆勒告诉《华盛顿邮报》,“人们现在需要诗歌”,她认为这是巴罗斯项目成功的原因)”可知,穆勒认为巴罗斯的项目成功的原因是“人们现在需要诗歌”。
再由第五段最后一句话“San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department manages about 220 parks, and Barrows’s goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all of them.( 旧金山的娱乐和公园部门管理着大约220个公园,巴罗斯的目标是把诗歌床头柜带到所有的公园)”可知,巴罗斯希望将这一项目带到所有公园,因此她也是非常有目标、有雄心的。故选C。

D 29. B 30. D 31. A
根据第二段“A new fabric coating could absorb some chemical weapons. That coating is made from a metal-organic framework that breaks down harmful mixtures. It could offer people in war-torn countries protection.(一种新的织物涂层可以吸收一些化学武器。这种涂层由一种金属有机框架制成,可以分解有害混合物。它可以为战乱国家的人们提供保护)”可知,这种涂层的功能是保护人们免受化学武器的伤害。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“On the flip side, another new fabric traps very little body heat. Tiny holes in this material let infrared waves pass through. Those waves carry heat away from your body to keep you cool.(On the flip side,另一种新型织物几乎不吸收体热。这种材料中的微小孔洞可以让红外波通过。这些波将热量从你的身体带走,使你保持凉爽可知,这里提到两种布料,第一种可以锁住或产生热量,第二种散热功能更好。由此可知,划线词组“on the flip side”意为“另一方面”说的是第二种情况。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“In one recent experiment, researchers sewed conductive thread into a T-shirt. This turned the shirt into a device that could send signals to a smartphone.(在最近的一项实验中,研究人员将导电线缝入T恤。这使得这件衬衫变成了一种可以向智能手机发送信号的设备)”可知,是导电线将T恤转变成了一种设备。故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章内容,尤其是最后一段“Many of these ideas have not yet left the lab, but inventors hope these and other innovations could someday let you get more from your wardrobe.(这些想法中有许多还没有走出实验室,但发明家们希望这些和其他的创新有一天能让你从衣服中得到更多)”可知,文章主要讲述了智能服装的未来。故选A。

Few cities are crying out for such a revolution more than São Paulo a sprawling metropolis with more than 12 million citizens and choked by a fleet of 8.6m vehicles.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据文章第二段“Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive of the Dublin-based firm Avolon, which will provide the aircraft to Gol and recently placed an order for 500 of the aircraft from their British manufacturer, admitted helicopters were the “kingdom of the wealthiest”.(总部位于都柏林的Avolon公司将为Gol提供这款飞机,最近该公司从英国制造商那里订购了500架,该公司首席执行官Dómhnal Slattery承认,直升机是“最富有的人的王国”。)”
根据文章第一段“after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around São Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.”(在巴西航空公司Gol达成协议后,该公司将使用数百辆低成本零排放电动空中出租车在圣保罗附近运送普通乘客。)”
根据文章最后一句话““We’ll be looking to Asia after São Paulo,” Avolon’s chief commercial officer, Paul Geaney, told Reuters.(Avolon首席商务官Paul Geaney对路透表示:“在São Paulo之后,我们将把目光投向亚洲。”)”
根据文章第一段“The skies over Latin America’s largest city are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around São Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.(巴西航空公司Gol达成一项协议,可以用数百辆低成本零排放的电动空中出租车运送São Paulo附近的普通乘客,这将见证一场未来主义的航空革命,这座拉美最大城市的天空将见证一场未来主义的航空革命。)”
D 37. B 38. G 39. C 40. E
由上文“Why does one plus one equal two?(为什么一加一等于二?)” One possible answer is “It just does! ”(一个可能的答案是“它确实如此!”)符合语境,其中answer 对应上文的问题,有承上作用。故选D项。
【37题详解】
由上文“Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow. (数学似乎是一个你必须遵守的规则世界)”可知,这里讲数学是一个遵守规则的学科,而B项It seems rigid and boring.(它看起来僵硬而无聊)符合语境,其中It指代上文Math, rigid and boring与上文a world of rules对应,所以本句有承上作用。故选B项。
由上文“One plus one can equal more than two because of reproduction. Say you put one rabbit and another rabbit together. You might well end up with a lot of rabbits.(由于繁殖,一加一多于二。假设你把一只兔子和另一只兔子放在一起。你最终可能会养很多兔子)”及下文“If one pair of tennis players gets together with another pair for an afternoon of tennis, there ends up being more than two pairs of tennis players because they could play each other in all sorts of different combinations. So one pair of tennis players plus another pair makes six pairs.(如果一对网球选手和另一对选手聚在一起打一个下午的网球,最终会有两对以上的网球选手,因为他们可以以各种不同的组合进行比赛。所以,一对网球运动员加上另一对网球选手就成了六对)”可知,这里讲的情况比上文兔子繁殖的问题更加复杂,而G项Apart from that, things may be more complicated.(除此之外,事情可能更复杂)符合语境,其中that代指前文的例子, more complicated代指下文的例子,所以本句有承上启下作用。故选G项。
由下文“If you put a pile of sand on top of another pile of sand, then you just get one pile of sand. Or, as an art student of mine pointed out, if you mix one color with one color, you get one color.(如果你把一堆沙子放在另一堆沙子上,那么你只会得到一堆沙子。或者,正如我的一位艺术学生所指出的那样,如果你把一种颜色和一种颜色混合在一起,你会得到一种颜色)”可知,这里在讲一加一等于一的情况,而C项Sometimes, one plus one is just one.(有时候,一加一就是一)符合语境,对下文有总括作用。故选C项。
由上文“I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers. It’s not a place where the answers are fixed and we’re supposed to know them. And I hope we will place more emphasis on those who are curious, and who follow their curiosity on a journey.(我希望我们将开始把数学视为一个提出问题和探索答案的地方。这不是一个答案固定的地方,我们应该知道它们。我希望我们能更加重视那些好奇的人,以及那些在旅途中追随好奇心的人)”可知,作者鼓励我们在数学的求知路上要有好奇心,而E项It’s a quiet walk rather than a race to the finish.(这是一次安静的散步,而不是一场赛跑)符合语境,其中It代指学数学,这里指学数学过程中不要急于寻求结果,而要去慢慢探索,本句对上文有总结作用。

To make up for my mistake, I took my little savings to Charles’ house after school.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“You are so rich! Just fix it!” I shouted. Charles’ face darkened even more, his eyes narrowing as he glared at me. “Money can’t buy everything, Joseph! This game player has sentimental value!” he retorted, his voice trembling with emotion. Realizing my words had only made the situation worse, I shut my mouth tightly, feeling a pang of regret. The room seemed to close in on me, the silence oppressive. Mrs. Smith stepped in, her expression stern. She ordered us to sort out the issue after class.
To make up for my mistake, I took my little savings to Charles’ house after school. My heart pounded as I rang the bell. But when Charles opened the door, his expression softened a bit upon seeing my determined face. I handed him my savings, though it was far from enough to repair the damage. “I know it’s not much, but I’ll save more and help you fix it,” I pledged sincerely. Charles nodded. “Alright, Joseph. But next time, don’t touch what’s not yours.” We shook hands, a silent understanding passing between us.
