Passage 1
From ancient times to today, poets have been seen as romantic, well-educated and full of feelings. Can you imagine that a miner (矿工), born in a mountain village with only a high school diploma (文凭), doing the hardest and most dangerous work in a mine, could write moving poems?
Chen Nianxi has been living a literary dream for most of his life. Chen was born in the mountains of Shaanxi. Inspired by newspapers and literary journals, Chen wrote his first poem in high school.

His experience in the mines was the source of inspiration for his poems, making him stand out in modern Chinese literature. He has published several well-received books so far.
Although the heavy load of life weighed on him, Chen’s poetry has a feeling of hope and strength. He writes about labor (劳动), loving labor and living a life filled with love, reminding us that no matter how hard life gets, we shouldn’t forget our dreams. Passage 4
Interview with Cartoonist Adrienne Hedger
During the past few years, cartoonist (漫画家) Adrienne Hedger has provided the world with her humor. We caught up with her for an interview. And here are some highlights from it.
About cartooning
Drawing cartoons had been a hobby forever. I’d make cards for friends and family with my drawings. But mostly writing was my job until one of my friends who worked for the American Girl magazine wanted me to do drawings. I did the art and that was the first time that I had ever seen my drawings in a book. It’s really fun.
I record all my ideas and the things I see in my own life. I see everything in comics. The very first time I saw my husband, my thought was, “I know exactly how I would draw that guy because he had this really square face.” I prefer to see everything as a cartoon.
About her favorite cartoon
It’s really about my family. Early on, Claire dropped a roll of toilet paper into the toilet. It was a clean toilet, and we had to get the paper out and dry it off. I did a cartoon about that and that one was funny. We could not believe what happened. I really enjoy making a cartoon about a personal family moment.
________
I have a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old, both girls. They often are fine. But the one thing that they do not like is how I draw their clothing. Clearly, it’s not attractive. I just draw T-shirts with long sleeves (袖子) and long trousers. And there are a lot of complaints about that.
I created one cartoon recently where my younger daughter Claire wrote a sentence for homework and then fell off the chair. She was very tired. And there’s another one where she holds onto my leg and wants me to take her into the kitchen to get a snack. Those are really my favorite ones for some reason.
My older daughter Kate doesn’t pay that much attention. I spend my whole life watching them and cartooning about them. And the older they get, the less they care. Kate said, “If I see you drawing anyone rolling their eyes (翻白眼), I know it’s a cartoon about me.”

On Sept. 7, famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO for her contribution (贡献) to the protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
Called the “daughter of Dunhuang”, her story with the caves started 60 years ago. In 1963, Fan, then a 25-year-old Peking University graduate, had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves, a place she had wanted to explore for a long time.
“Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was breathtaking. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth,” Fan told Gansu Daily.
Back in those days, the Mogao Caves were almost completely cut off from the world. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the Caves to copy murals (壁画) and do whatever they could to protect and restore them.
In 2011 after 40 years of hard work, a report on 10 Mogao Caves by Fan’s team was finally published. It was known as China's first professional report on cave archaeology.
As time passed. Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting Dunhuang might harm the caves, causing the murals inside to fade. Something needed to be done to preserve Dunhuang’s heritage.
In the late 1980s, Fan stumbled upon computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years of exploration, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database to protect cultural relics (文物) there, allowing Dunhuang’s art to live forever and to step out of the caves to meet the world.
“In my whole life, I’ve only done one thing: protect and promote the world cultural heritage of the Mogao Caves,” she told People’s Daily. “My heart belongs to Dunhuang.”

Passage 5
Have you ever watched any kung fu movies? Do you like this type of movie?
What comes to your mind when you think of kung fu? Maybe Shaolin monks (和尚) with a serious look in their eyes. But does it really show the meaning of kung fu?
Laurence J.Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, looked for the answer in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm traveled to cities in China and the US to search for the value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover. He has been practicing the art for more than 40 years. For him, it is more than fun. Ages ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for two years. But by practicing kung fu, he was able to get well step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him and also the way he begins the day.
Still, there are other deep meanings in the practice. Peace is one value, which is shown both in the name and practice of kung fu. The Chinese character Wu (武) has two parts—ge, meaning “to fight”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always greet people with baoquan. This lets each person know that there are no hidden weapons (武器) and shows trust.
“The lasting values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people,” Brahm said.

Passage 1
“Wanted: Violin. Can’t pay much. Call...”
Why did I notice that? I wondered, since I seldom look at such ads.
I put the paper on my lap and closed my eyes, remembering what had happened many years before, when my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too, had wanted a violin, but we couldn’t afford.
When my arms grew long enough, how I wanted one! But I knew it was out of the question.
It was not a good year. The crops did not bring as much as we had hoped at harvest. Yet even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, “Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?”
Daddy looked sad. That night, and many following nights, I heard him remind God in our family devotions, “… and Lord, Mary wants her own violin.”
One evening we all sat at the table. Daddy wrote a letter to his friend, Mr. Finkle, a fine violinist.
When Daddy received a letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he announced, “We’ll be driving to Columbus.”
The day finally arrived. After we got there, Mr. Finkle, a tall man, opened the door. “Come in!” He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin and started to play.
“Carl, I found it in a pawn shop for seven dollars. It’s a good violin. Mary should be able to make beautiful music with it.” Then he handed the violin to me.
I noticed the tears in Daddy’s eyes as I finally understood. It was mine!
When I was ready to join the school orchestra (管弦乐队), I trembled with excitement. I sat in the third row of violins and wore my white orchestra jacket like a royal robe. My heart beat wildly at my first public performance, a school operetta. I felt sure everyone in the audience was watching me. Daddy and Mother smiled proudly at their little girl. And soon I found myself in the first-violin chair.
I thought of Daddy, who did all he could to fill my desires when I was young. I wonder if I had ever thanked him.
At last I picked up the newspaper, walked to the phone and dialed the number. Later that day, a man knocked on the door. “My daughter wants a violin so badly,” he said, “How much are you asking?” Any music store, I knew, would offer me a nice price. But now I heard my voice answer, “Seven dollars.”
“Are you sure?” he asked, reminding so much of Daddy.
Later, I saw his wife and children waiting in an old car. The door suddenly opened and a young girl ran to him. She hugged the violin case against her, then dropped to her knees and snapped open the case. She touched the violin lightly as it caught the glow of the late-afternoon Sun, then turned and threw her arm around her smiling father.

Passage 2
When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mum or my grandma wasting food. Anything we didn’t eat at one meal was leftovers (剩菜). I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the potatoes leftover. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mum fry bacon for us in the morning, she would always take the oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn’t actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week’s meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, my husband or, my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.

When introducing the rules of the class, the first words my math teacher, Ms Whitney, began with were “kindness” and “homework”. Now, I can only imagine that you must be feeling what I felt then: Why would homework, which is already so difficult, be connected with anything good?
As if understanding my confusion (困惑), Ms Whitney began to explain in her gentle-but-authoritative voice: “Homework sometimes needs cooperation. When others can’t solve a problem, and you can do it, you can help them. It provides you the chance to grow and learn. There’s a positive (积极的) relationship between them.”
It was at that moment I heard a pop in my head, a feeling as if the confusion around the two words had disappeared. Homework brings out kindness, and kindness in turn creates an environment that encourages everyone to practice.
Ms Whitney proved the truth behind those words during the following days. Every day, we were divided into groups and made to stand next to each other, working on problems that came like a never-ending flood. The first day, I was a bit uncomfortable working with another person. But soon, as we discussed questions and helped each other, that uncomfortable feeling began to disappear.
In a classroom filled with friendly discussion and Ms. Whitney’s happy voice calling out, “Kindness and Homework!” whenever she saw one of us standing alone or in need of help, math class didn’t feel as boring as it was before. It was hard to believe that homework problems could change the way people think. In the past, I could only think of one method to solve a problem, but now I can think of more than two ways. Learning in Ms. Whitney’s class has helped me find a strong wish to learn, which will help me for the rest of my journey abroad.

A.By explaining her words again and again.
B.By discussing with her students strictly.
C.By calling out “Kindness and Homework” loudly.

53.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

Of course, it was Rat who pulled Mole out of the water. Rat turned the boat right way up and got the lunch basket from the bottom of the river. And he laughed and laughed.
When all was ready again, the poor Mole sat in the boat very wet. As they left, he said in a low voice, “Ratty, I have been so silly. I am really sorry indeed.”
“Never mind!” replied Rat kindly. “I’m always in and out of the water myself, so don’t worry about it. I’ll teach you to row and to swim.”
Mole found no words to say at that moment.
When they got home, they had a good hot dinner in front of a bright fire while Rat told exciting stories of life on the river. Passage 1
It’s bad enough when the pressure (压力) is coming from your friends! That’s what just happened to me at my friend’s birthday party.
Chloe invited only three guests: Mareya, Madison, and me. After dinner, we sang and danced along to our favorite songs.
A little later, Chloe said, “It’s scary-movie time!”
“You’re joking around again, right?” said Mareya. “The movie won’t really be scary, will it?”
“Of course”, Chloe said. “That’s the whole point.
“Um, I don’t want to be a party pooper,” said Mareya. “But I’m really afraid of scary-movies!”
“Yeah,” I added. “When it comes to watching scary stuff right before bed, I get the worst nightmares imaginable.”
“You’re probably remembering what it was like to watch scary movies when you were younger,” said Madison. “But it’s not like you are babies anymore. So come on! It’ll be fun.”
“Exactly!” said Chloe. “My big brother has seen this movie five times, and he says it’s hardly even scary at
“Besides,’’ said Madison, “it’s Chloe’s birthday wish. So don’t you think you should try to watch it, even for just a couple of minutes?”
“Well,” said Mareya. T guess just a couple of minutes could be OK.”
I sighed. “I guess if it matters that much, I can try for a little bit too.”
We got all set up with bowls of popcorn and started the movie. For the first couple of minutes, I thought Chloe’s brother might have actually been telling the truth. But as soon as the creepy monsters (怪物) started chasing everybody, all four of us jumped up and screamed!
“That was really fun, Madison giggled. was so scared, I accidentally made my whole bowl of popcorn go flying!”
Chloe laughed. “I know! I can’t wait for the next scary surprise.”
“I can!” I said. “Is it OK if I go hang out in your room until the movie’s over?”
“Me too...said Mareya. “Maybe you can just tell us what happened after?”
Chloe was fine with that. Chloe and Madison had fun being scared during the movie, but not so much fun afterward.
“Can we please turn the light on?” Madison said at bedtime. “I keep imagining there arc monsters in that closet.”
“Good idea,” said Chloe. “There’s no way I’m going to close my eyes tonight.”
“You know,” said Madison, “I think I’d better call my mom and get a ride home.”
“You can borrow Oinksy (玩偶),” Mareya said, “He’s good at helping people sleep.”
Here’s what ended up happening: Madison decided to go home, Chloe slept with Oinksy, and Mareya and I were extremely glad we’d watched only a couple of minutes of the movie! Passage 2
We decided not to tell the kids. Marla knew that once our three daughters understood that their mother had been given 1,000 days to live, they’d start counting.
They would not be able to enjoy school, friends, their teams, or birthday parties. They’d be watching too closely how she looked, moved, acted, ate, or didn’t. Marla wanted her daughters to stay children: happy, relaxed, and confident that tomorrow would look like yesterday.
In 2009, Marla’s doctor called to tell her that she had early-stage cancer. After several medical operations, she needed eight rounds of chemotherapy (化疗) to clear the cancer found in her body.
Our kids were 8, 9, and 11 at the time, and they understood that their mother was under treatment, but we never told them the news we soon learned from hospital: Marla had the most serious cancer cells, and she had little chance to stay alive. Her doctor directly told her, “Go to live your next 1,000 days in the best way you know how.”
Though she was badly ill, Marla went on running long distances, for her own mental (心理的) fitness, and more importantly, so her kids would see her strong. I knew these miles were a wonder. Marla survived a little more than 3,500 days instead of 1,000. In her lifetime, she celebrated 25 anniversaries (周年纪念日), 57 children’s birthdays, three college acceptances, and two high-school graduations. But the next numbers make me sad: Zero college graduations. Zero weddings. Zero grandchildren.
Marla said to me at the hospital, “No glory (辉煌的) days for us. We almost had the kids out of the house, and now you’re alone. I’m so sorry.” I replied, “Sorry about what? You lived life to the fullest and made life worth living. I admired your power and courage. You already outran science. Thank you for taking me on your magic journey. Rest easy, my one and only girlfriend.”

He lived on milk from the she-wolf first, but she soon began to give him meat. Wolves live only on meat. There came a time when there was no meat. For many days, the cubs did not eat. They were too weak and tired to play.
One-Eye, the cub’s father, was killed in a fight over food. Even the she-wolf left the cave to find meat, but there was nothing. One by one, the cubs died, except for the gray cub.
_______. One day, when his mother was out hunting, the gray cub ran out of the cave. He felt fresh to see living things and non-living things in the forest. On the way, he met an animal about his own size. It was a weasel, a rat-like animal. It ran at him and bit his throat. He was nearly dead when the she-wolf arrived just in time to kill and eat it.
The gray cub was not good at hunting yet, and still needed food from his mother. One day, the she-wolf brought him a lynx (猞猁) kitten. While eating, he heard great noise. The bite was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. The lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt, she did not move.

Passage 4
For more than 1,300 years in feudal China, a system of the imperial examination (科举制度) was used to select government officials. Here is a story about a student taking the imperial examination.
One day, on his way to the capital to sit the final imperial examination, a young man spent a night at an old temple. After supper, he had an interesting conversation with an old monk (和尚) there.
The monk said that people thought everything in the world is either male or female, and he asked his guest how to tell the male of seawater or trees from the female. The young man thought it over but couldn’t come up with an answer.
The monk then explained that for the seawater, billows (巨浪) are male and waves are female because males are usually bigger than females. For trees, the pine (松) tree is male because the Chinese character for it contains a male radical (部首), and the plum(梅子) tree is female because it has a female component (成分) in the word.
The student found the answer interesting but not very excellent.
However, it happened that the title of the thesis (论文) for the imperial examination that year was On the Gender of All Things in the World.
So, the student quoted what the monk said in his thesis. Surprisingly, he not only passed the examination but came in first.

Passage 5
“Please take my penny,” said Maggie to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets. Her brother Andrew drew her back, whispering, “Maggie, he is not a beggar (乞丐)!”
But Maggie paid no attention. “Please take it,” she said again. Old Dan smiled, and took it. “Thank you, little miss,” he said, “It is kindly meant.”
After that, Maggie went to the beach to gather shells. She never thought how fast the hours were passing until being tired, she sat down on a rock beside a little pool. Soon she was scared by a noise near her, and Dan’s large dog Rover jumped down from a rock!
He licked her hands and made a loud noise, and then began gently to pull her coat. “Rover wishes me to come away, I see,” she said, and she rose from the rock and began to go home. However, that was not so easy as she had expected. She found the places she had gone down easily very difficult to climb up, and as the tide (潮水) had been coming in for some time. She found some of the stones wet and smooth.
What could poor Maggie do? She felt sad and cried, but the waves made a much louder noise than she could make, and perhaps she would have been drowned (淹死) without good wise Rover.
Rover jumped upon a big stone and raised his loud bark until even the waves could not drown it.
The fisherman had taken his nets to the top of the cliffs (悬崖), and was laying them out in the sun when he heard the loud barking of a dog. He felt sure that it was Rover, and Rover in trouble, so, going to the edge of the cliffs, he looked over. There he saw it all—Rover barking for help, and the little child standing beside him.
“Bless her! It is the little one that was so kind-spoken to me this morning!” he cried, and he hurried to his sons’ home.
“Quick, boys, quick!” he said. “Get to the boat, and row fast to the bay (海湾). There is a poor child there just waiting to be drowned.” The fishermen lost no time, and soon little Maggie and Rover were rowed safely to land! Old Dan was waiting there to lift her out, and give her into her mother’s arms.
“It was the penny that did it, madam,” he said to Mrs. Weston later. “I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny so kind-like into my hand—just as if he would have said, ‘Rover will be your friend now, little girl.’ And I am thinking he had been looking after her all the day, for he never came near me after that.”

Passage 1
Watson had been watching his friend closely since sitting down to breakfast. Holmes happened to look up and meet his eyes. “Watson, what are you thinking about?” he asked.
“You.”
“Me?”
“Yes, Holmes. I was just thinking about how easily you picked up all these tricks of yours.”
“No doubt,” Holmes answered with a smile. “Would you care to give me an example of my method of reasoning?”
“With pleasure,” said Watson. “I can tell that you were quite absent-minded this morning.”
“Excellent!” said Holmes. “How could you possibly know that?”
“Because you’re usually a neat man, but today, you’ve forgotten to shave (刮脸).”
“Dear me!” said Holmes. “I had no idea. Watson, that you were so clever. Has your eagle eye detected anything else?”
“Yes, Holmes. You have a client named Barlow, and you’ve been unsuccessful with his case.”
“Dear me, how could you know that?”
“I saw the name on the outside of his envelope. When you opened it, you groaned (叹息) and put it in your pocket with a frown (皱眉).
“You are indeed good at noticing things around you. Any other points?”
“Yes, Holmes, you’ve put on your black coat, instead of your usual dressing gown. You must be expecting an important visitor.”

“I could find other points, Holmes, but I’m only giving you these few, in order to show you that there are other people in the world who can be as clever as you.”
“And some not so clever,” said Holmes. “I admit they are few, but I’m afraid, my dear Watson, that I miscount you among them.”
“What do you mean, Holmes? You mean I was mistaken?”
“Just a little that way, I fear. Let’s go over your reasoning: I didn’t shave because I’d sent my razor out to be repaired. I put on my coat because I have an early appointment with my dentist. When Scrooge woke up, it was very dark. The ghost that Marley told him about didn’t appear until the clock struck one. The Ghost of Christmas Past was very strange. It was the height of a child but it looked like an old man.
The Ghost asked Scrooge to walk with him. They passed through the wall and stood on a country road. When they walked along the road, Scrooge found this was the place where he grew up. Some small horses were running towards them with boys on their backs. All these boys were happy. Then they came to a school. They saw a long, empty classroom. At a desk a lonely boy was reading a book. When Scrooge saw himself, he cried.
A moment later they went in an apprentice. There Scrooge saw his old boss, Fezziwig. He asked Ebenezer, Scrooge’s former self, now a young man, and Dick, Scrooge’s workmate to get ready for the party. Soon the warehouse was cosiest, warmest, brightest ballroom. They enjoyed themselves there.
After the party, they went on travelling. Scrooge saw himself again. He was older now. He was sitting by a pretty young girl, Belle. There were tears in her eyes. She said Scrooge had changed. He gave up all his dreams and now he was only interested in making money. They couldn’t make each other happy any more. She thought Scrooge wouldn’t choose to marry a poor girl like her. So she stood up and said goodbye to him.

Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. “I love the sea,” he said. “It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land.” He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The next room was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.
Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus (鹦鹉螺号). He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity (电) using salt and mercury (水银). This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied (排空) tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise.
After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical (圆柱形的) shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed (惊叫). “I love it as if it were my child,” he replied.
“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.” “It must have cost a fortune! (大笔的钱)” I exclaimed.

I wanted to go and look at a place in the middle of the island that I had found when I was exploring. We started and soon got to it, because the island was only three miles long and a quarter of a mile wide.
This place was a hill about forty feet high. We had a hard time getting to the top. The sides were so steep and the trees were so thick. We walked and climbed around all over it, and found a big hole in the rock. It was a good place to play our game. The hole was as big as two or three rooms, and Jim could stand up straight in it. It was cool there. Jim wanted to put our things there, but I said we didn’t want to be climbing up and down there all the time. Jim said if we had the boat hidden in a good place and put all the things in the hole, we could rush there when anybody was to come to the island. They would never find us without dogs.
Besides, he said that little birds had said it was going to rain. We didn’t want the things to get wet.
So we went back and got the boat, and pulled all the things up there. Then we found a place close by to hide the boat in, among the thick willows. We took some fish off the lines and set them again, and began to get ready for dinner.
The door of the hole was big enough to roll a hogshead (大桶) in, and there was also a good place to build a fire. So we built a fire and cooked dinner. We spread the blankets inside, and ate our dinner. We put all the other things at the back of the hole.
Pretty soon it darkened and began to thunder. Directly it began to rain, and I never saw the wind blow so heavily. It was one of these regular summer storms. It would get so dark that it looked all blue-black outside.
“Jim, this is nice,” I said. “I wouldn’t want to be nowhere else but here. Pass me another piece of fish and some hot bread.”
“Well, if it weren’t for Jim, you wouldn’t stay here. You would stay in the woods, without food, and you would get half-dead from the shower. That’s true, dear. The chickens know when it rains, and so do the birds. I know.”

14.According to the article, Adrienne Hedger was a (n) ________ before becoming a cartoonist.

Passage 2
In the late 1960s, when Li Zhenxia was 5, she liked oil-paper umbrellas and dreamed of buying a beautiful, red oil-paper umbrella in a store next to her grandmother’s house. It was too expensive for her family to afford one at the time.
When she was 10, she saw a young bridegroom (新郎) pass by her house on his way to pick up his bride. He and his friends were carrying six red oil-paper umbrellas, and the image touched her heart.
When she was in high school, her physics teacher would arrive with an oil-paper umbrella every time it rained. She and the teacher became good friends.
In 1996, Li’s dream of oil-paper umbrellas came true when she started learning how to make them by herself. Two years later, she produced her first one. Of course, it was red.
Today, Li is a boss and has her own stores. She enjoys talking to her customers and passing on her skills to her students.

Passage 4
34.What can we learn about Fan from the passage?

A.It was an amazing place. B.The environment was terrible.
C.It was in great need of protection. D.The working conditions were better than expected.
36.What pushed Fan to set up a digital database for the Mogao Caves?
A.Her interest in computer technology. B.Her dream of spreading Chinese culture.
C.The increasing risk of harm to the caves. D.The need to publish the professional report.
37.What does Fan think of her work in Dunhuang?
A.It has won her great respect. B.It has been her lifelong career.
C.It has influenced many young people. D.It has helped with cultural exchange.

38.According to the passage, Laurence J.Brahm ________.
A.does not like kung fu

However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a feast. Each moment that you don’t live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.

Passage 3
50.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “cooperation”?
A.To work together. B.To have fun. C.To be independent. D.To be careful.

A.The moment Ms Whitney explained patiently.
B.The moment the classroom filled with discussion.
C.The moment the writer worked with another person.
D.The moment Ms Whitney introduced rules of the class.
52.How did Ms. Whitney prove the truth behind her words?
A.By explaining her words again and again.
B.By discussing with her students strictly.
C.By calling out “Kindness and Homework” loudly.
D.By dividing students into groups to work on problems.
53.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The writer gets bored with maths class. B.The writer prefers to do things on her own.
C.Homework means more than finishing a task. D.Homework is not difficult for the writer at all.

Mole found no words to say at that moment.

The meals are simple but hearty—a bowl of soup, with rice, noodles or dumplings.
Wang is not alone. Yushiji, another restaurant also offers meals to the needy at a low price. For just 12 yuan, customers can enjoy a hot, hearty meal that usually costs much more.
Delivery workers like Fan Xingang often come and eat here. “My friends told me about this place. It’s not just good for the low price,” Fan said. “They show us respect and kindness.”

话题4 叙事忆旧与哲理感悟
As far as your special situation goes, your friends can do a trick if they want to, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it. When there is pressure from your friends, the most important thing to remember is:
Trust your sense no matter what!
Oh, and if your friends ever refuse to remain friends unless you do what they want, you might want to try playing with some different people.

66.If the children were told about Marla’s illness, they would ________.
A.remain active B.study harder C.stay out with friends D.live with worries

Passage 3
Through hard life, the gray cub learnt what life was about.
He was the only gray cub (狼崽) of the she-wolf. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was gray like his father. He was the strongest cub. He showed more anger than his brothers and sisters.
The kitten’s mother had followed the she-wolf here. They started to fight, and would fight to the death. He ran forward and bit one of her legs. The bite was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. The lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt, she did not move.
Without his mother to take care of him, the gray cub had to find food alone for both of them. He learnt without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN.

The young man was so grateful to the old monk that he later presented the man with a tablet (匾) with the words, “To chat with you for one night is better than to study for 10 years.”

Passage 2
Although Scrooge wanted to go home, the Ghost continued making him look. He saw Belle and his beautiful girl laughing happily. Then the father came in with many Christmas toys and presents. Their happiness was indescribable. The master of the house sat happily with his daughter and her mother by the fire. Scrooge regretted so much that his eyes filled with tears.

Passage 3
“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions!”

Passage 4
I know.”

Passage 5
It was a cold winter night when the police officer Lee and the detective Smith were walking back to the police station. They saw a robber attacking an old woman on the road. Lee and Smith ran over to the robber immediately.
The robber saw them and ran away as fast as he could. Lee and Smith followed him for a long distance until the robber rushed into an underground station. Lee and Smith ran into the station and tried to find him. It was quite dark outside that night and they couldn’t see the robber clearly. But they remembered what his body shape was like.
When they went in, they saw six men in the station. All of them had the similar build as the robber. Lee looked at them carefully, one by one.
The first man was arguing with an underground station worker. He seemed to be very depressed.
The second one was watching the fight between the first man and the worker. It seemed like he was quite interested in it.
The third one was quietly reading a newspaper. His face was hidden behind the newspaper.
The fourth one was running to warm himself up, as it was cold in the station.
The fifth one was waiting for the underground. He looked at his watch several times. He seemed to be in a hurry.
The sixth one was wearing a big coat, sitting on a bench and shivering.
Lee finally found out which one the robber was. He whispered to Smith, “Look! The robber wanted to cover up his panting (气喘吁吁) by doing this.”
