Top Picnic Spots in London
Kew Gardens
You need to buy a ticket to enter, but it’s definitely worth it — especially as you can visit the newly opened Temperate House, which is filled with amazing rare plants. If you want to enjoy a meal in nature, hunt down the picnic benches in Kew’s woodland areas. Kew has gone super green and banned single-use plastic from its cafes and restaurants. You can get discounts if you bring a reusable coffee cup.
Primrose Hill
Looking for a picnic with a view? Head to Primrose Hill, where you can spend long and sleepy summer afternoons looking down over the city. When you’ve had your fill of picnic food, it’s a pretty great place to fly a kite. The beloved Paddington movie was filmed in Primrose Hill, so if you’re up to a post-picnic walk, do check out the beautiful colors of Chalcot Square and Chalcot Crescent nearby.
Soho Square
Good things come in small packages, or so this mini plot of grass in central would have you believe. You might not expect Soho, with its occasionally noisy reputation, to be the perfect place for a relaxing picnic, but picnicking in this square is more peaceful than you might imagine.
Hampstead Heath
The Hampstead Heath is free and always open. And there’s room enough for everyone. The wild green space is the apple of North London’s eye, with remarkable city scenes, rolling grassland and ancient woodland. Need to work up your appetite before you get down to picnic business? Set up camp near the public swimming ponds. Barbecues and campfires aren’t allowed.
1. Where can you visit a former film-shooting site?
A. In Soho Square. B. In Kew Gardens.
C. In Primrose Hill. D. In Hampstead Heath.
2. How is Soho Square different from the others?
A. It charges an entrance fee. B. It is a pocket-sized picnic spot.
C It offers discounts on takeaways. D. It is popular with North Londoners.
3. What can picnickers do in Hampstead Heath?
A. Enjoy primitive forests. B. Explore endangered plants.
C. Overlook the entire London. D. Fly kites with family members.

Billy Monger was just 17 when he was competing in a Formula 4 race in England. Unfortunately, he got into an accident that led both of his legs to be amputated (截肢). But instead of letting the disaster slow him down, he learned to walk again, returned to racing, and eventually chose a different kind of race. Last October, the now 25-year-old broke the world record at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.
A Kona Ironman consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2-mile marathon run. Monger had to battle extreme dampness, baking heat, and unforgiving crosswinds. He strictly followed the training schedule. Every session had a purpose. “I didn’t want to get to race day and think ‘if only I’d done that session’. That’s the worst feeling in the world,” he said.
Monger faced another big challenge. Sweat built up in his prosthetic sockets (假肢接口), and when that happened, they could get loose, his skin broke down, and suddenly, he was out of the race. To solve that, he and his prosthetist engineered a custom adjustable socket system inspired by cycling shoes. “We built in a Boa dial. By tightening or loosening the fit, I wasn’t stopping mid-race to take my leg off and pour out sweat,” he said.
Even with the best preparation, things didn’t always go to plan. “I actually broke the Boa system during the race,” he admitted. “Luckily, it still held up. But when that happened, I just thought, ‘Well, there’s no turning back now — just get on with it.’”
And so he did. Monger finished the race in 14 hours and 23 minutes, two hours faster than the previous record. It wasn’t just about personal victory. Monger competed to raise money for Comic Relief, a British charity fighting global hunger. And Monger isn’t done; he’s got his sights set on the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.
4. What happened to Billy Monger at the age of 17?
A. He won a Formula 4 race. B. He lost parts of his legs.
C. He started training for Ironman. D. He joined a charity organization.
5. What was Monger’s attitude towards his training for the Kona Ironman?
A. Serious. B. Relaxed. C. Cautious. D. Carefree.
6. What did Monger use a Boa dial to do?
A. Increase his cycling stability. B. Make his prosthetic legs strong.
C. Prevent sweat from affecting his race. D. Reduce the weight of his prosthetics.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Billy Monger: A Rising Star in Racing
B. Challenges: The Steppingstones of Life
C. The Science Behind Prosthetic Innovation
D. Monger’s Journey to Make Ironman History
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D
【解析】

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Billy Monger was just 17 when he was competing in a Formula 4 race in England. Unfortunately, he got into an accident that led both of his legs to be amputated (截肢). But instead of letting the disaster slow him down, he learned to walk again, returned to racing, and eventually chose a different kind of race. C
The simple act of looking at a piece of visual art can enhance your well-being, a new study has found, and this benefit can be gained in a hospital setting as well as an art gallery.
In the past few decades, significant efforts focused on creative activities such as painting, drawing courses, and creating or listening to music. It has been believed that creating art can have psychological and emotional benefits. However, visits to art museums and encounters with art installed(安装) in public spaces received much less attention. That inspired the researchers to seek and determine if viewing art can improve well-being and under what conditions.
Previous research has suggested that viewing art might influence mood or stress, but the research was limited and inconsistent. In this study, the researchers reviewed data from 38 previously published studies that involved 6,805 participants. They compiled the evidence base, providing for the first time a clear and comprehensive overview of when, where and why art viewing is used to promote well-being.
They found the strongest evidence for benefits in well-being. These benefits were observed in a wide range of contexts — in museums and galleries as well as clinics and hospital settings and also through the medium of virtual reality. A variety of art types including abstract, modern and contemporary paintings, photography, sculpture and installations were found to enhance well-being.
“People often think of art as a luxury, but our research suggests that viewing art — whether as a hobby or as a targeted health intervention — can meaningfully support well-being,” said McKenzie Trupp, lead author and researcher of the study. “This research opens up exciting possibilities for integrating art into everyday environments and public health strategies.” The researchers of the study have called on health care providers and policy makers to integrate art into mental health strategies as a low-cost and easily-accessible resource.
8. What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. The benefits of art creation. B. The public's attention to artworks.
C. The origin of the research question. D. The previous research into well-being.
9. What does the underlined word “compiled” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Collected. B. Presented.
C. Documented. D. Witnessed.
10. What is a key finding about viewing art?
A. It serves as a luxury experience. B. Its benefits are unique to art galleries.
C. Its effects on emotions are temporary. D. It boosts well-being in diverse locations.
11. How does the author conclude the text?
A. By clarifying some concepts. B. By discussing study limitations.
C. By advocating policy applications. D. By suggesting future study topics.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. C

In his new book The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt uses numerous statistics and charts to show that rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers exploded in the early 2010s right after the emergence of the smartphone and social media. Haidt calls the period from 2010 to 2015 the “Great Rewiring”, the time when smartphones and social media became widely adopted among teens and when we saw sharp increases in teen mental health problems. Haidt states that the switch from a play-based childhood to a phone-based childhood is largely responsible for the anxious generation.
It is funny that while parents stopped letting children play around the neighborhood without adult supervision (监督) because of the fear of what random strangers would do, they allowed their children access to the Internet where random strangers could steal their minds and hearts. Haidt claims, “Two trends — overprotection in the real world and underprotection in the virtual world — are the major reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation.” Some academics have tried to point, unconvincingly, to other factors, like the global financial crisis in 2008, or climate change, to explain the teen mental health crisis.
Haidt also demonstrates why smartphones and social media are responsible. In chapter 5, he discusses “four foundational harms” introduced and encouraged by these technologies: social deprivation (剥夺), sleep deprivation, attention fragmentation, and addiction. He shows that while the Internet offers a pretense of connection and socializing, its popularity has made people (teenagers in particular) feel lonelier and has deprived them of real-world connections.
The final part of the book is a call to collective action. To undo the harm caused by the Great Rewiring, Haidt says communities must work together. Parents, schools, tech companies, and governments need to do their part to build better policies that will give children a better childhood — a childhood with more freedom in the real world and less freedom in the virtual world.
This book contains a lot of helpful and alarming information. If you are a parent or grandparent of a young child, this will be the book for you.
12. What leads to the explosion of anxiety and depression among teens in the early 2010s?
A. The fear of the digital age.

13. What is the author’s attitude to some academics’ viewpoints in paragraph 2?
A. Unclear. B. Disapproving. C. Supportive. D. Tolerant.
14. What does Haidt propose in the last part of his book?
A. Establishment of phone-free schools.
B. Government control over media content.
C. Teens’ self-management in virtual spaces.
D. Joint effort from all parties to erase the harm.
15. What is the author’s primary purpose in writing the text?

With the National Energy-Saving Publicity Week approaching, I’m happy to share my low-carbon lifestyle. It mainly involves daily acts like taking buses over cars, reusing water, and always switching off lights and fans when leaving the room.
Forming these habits was easy. Walking to school one morning, I enjoyed the fresh air and felt energized. Watching plants thrive on my reused water fills me with quiet pride. From these small steps, which serve as a testament to the power of incremental change, I’ve learned that energy-saving starts not with grand actions but with daily details. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On the school bus back home, David was recalling the game he played that day, when Guillermo, his classmate, sat down next to him. “Hi, David! I’m your biggest fan! And I really like your shoes!”
“Hi, Guillermo! Thank you. My shoes are really old, and the soles (鞋底) have already started to come off. You should see the new shoes I’ll be getting.” David’s eyes lit up.
It had been seven months since David started to save money for the pair of athletic shoes he wanted. He did it by selling lemon juice and delivering newspapers every morning, for he didn’t want to burden his mother. He knew how hard his mother worked, struggling to provide for him and his two younger twin sisters.
David couldn’t stop talking about his dream shoes with Guillermo. “Guillermo! I did it! I’m going straight to the store after homework this evening and buying the best athletic shoes in town. I hope you can accompany me to the shop. It’s going to be the best feeling ever!”
Guillermo felt genuine happiness for his hero. That was when the bus suddenly jolted (颠簸) over the rough road, and one of Guillermo’s shoes fell off onto the bus floor. David was shocked at the sight of the worn-out, blackened shoe. It was a pair of thin, low-quality summer shoes that had seen too many seasons. There was an awkward silence for the rest of the ride.
“Be ready by 5 o’clock!” David finally reminded Guillermo of the evening’s plan to visit the store. There was no way David was going to the store alone. Not after what he had seen.
“Ah, David! Here to pick up your new pair of soccer shoes? I’ve got them packed and ready right here.” “Hold on, sir. Could you show me a pair of those in a smaller size?” David said.
The shop owner, Mr Manning, was confused. “But the ones I packed are your exact size, David.” “Not for me, for my friend here,” David replied.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Inspired by David’s actions, the store owner decided to help David and his family.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Guillermo couldn’t possibly let David do that. But David squeezed Guillermo’s hand softly to quiet him. “Guillermo, you’re always calling me your hero. Let me try and be one for you.” Without allowing Guillermo to speak, David bought a carefully chosen pair of soccer shoes for his classmate. Now Guillermo was so grateful to David and so delighted with this unexpected gift. Mr Manning heard the exchange between the boys and felt a warmth of love and affection rise in his chest.
Inspired by David’s actions, the store owner decided to help David and his family. Soon after the boys left the store, Mr Manning drove a truck to David’s home. He told David’s mother what her son had done for his friend. Then he turned to David, “I think your kindness should be rewarded. So come on! Get on the back of my truck and pick up as many pairs of shoes as you’d like. For you and your family. They are all on me.” After his mother’s approval, David dashed to the truck in excitement, promising to always help the needy whenever he could.

C. It offers discounts on takeaways. D. It is popular with North Londoners.

D. The arrival of smartphones and social media.
15 What is the author’s primary purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a book on parenting.
B. To offer useful guidance to educators.
C. To highlight the harms of social media.
D. To clarify the proper usage of smartphones.
