Above all else,I look for understanding in a friend.A good friend tries to understand how another person
is feeling. He is not quick to judge.Instead,he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's
place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however,a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (in others. He
notices their good points. In short, good friends will be honest to each other and accept each other.
Another quality of a friend is reliability.I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet
me somewhere at a certain time,I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor,he will do his best to help
me.If I am in trouble,he will not run away from me.

Usually, tornadoes are more common in the spring and summer months.Knowing what to do before and
during a tornado can save your life and the life of your loved ones. When you hear that you are in a tornado
watch,it means that tornadoes or other kinds of dangerous weather are on the way.You need to be ready to go
to a safe shelter if tornadoes do happen or if there is a warning.Listen to local radio or TV programmes for
the update so that you have information to make decisions about your safety.

When a tornado warning is issued for your town or county, take shelter immediately.Tornado sirens()
英语试题第3页
warn people who are outdoors.Do not expect to hear sirens if you are indoors.Listen to weather reports and
watch TV if you are indoors.Remember to have fresh batteries for your radios and flashlights.
Plan ahead for tornado watches and warnings.Talk to your family, friends and neighbours so that you
know safe places to go to get out of danger. Here are some important tips:
Take shelter in a basement, away from any windows.
If you are in a house or building with no basement,go to the lowest floor,a small centre room such as a
bathroom or closet, under the stairs,or in an inside hallway with no windows.
If you are in a mobile home or trailer, plan ahead and get out!
It is not safe to be in a mobile home or trailer during a tornado. You need to make plans with family,
friends or neighbours to go to a safer, stronger home or another building to take shelter.
It is very risky to be in a car or truck during a tornado.
Know if there are tornado watches in the area and avoid driving into dangerous situations.Instead, take
shelter in a basement or strong building.
Have an emergency kit ready and keep it in your safe area.
A few ideas for things to have in an emergency kit would be water,a flashlight, food (like crackers, peanut
butter,granola bars),a radio that uses batteries,any medications you need,and a first-aid kit.

A computer program has been used to predict how people are feeling when they type.
In a study participants were asked to type a particular phrase and the program then estimated if they
were happy, sad and so on.Surprisingly it was correct 70 per cent of the time, and the findings could lead to
smarter artificial intelligence in the future.
The study published in the journal Behavior and Information Technology was carried out by researchers
at the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh, reports Live Science.
In the research 25 people ranging from 15 to 40 years old were asked to retype two paragraphs from
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. They also had to enter their emotional state every
30 minutes while doing their regular activities on the computer. This allowed the program an opportunity to
understand how their emotions changed their typing style.
Moods tested were joy, fear, anger, sadness, hate, and shame. The result was that the program could
identify()a person's mood correctly 70 per cent of the time.It was most successful in identifying
joyfulness with an 87 per cent success ratio, while sadness was the least successful at 60 per cent. The
researchers found that the participants were less likely to input (data when they were in a bad mood,
which may explain the inexactness of the second result.
However, the findings could have great importance for artificial intelligence, and it may allow
computers to get along with us in a friendlier manner,"If we could build any system that is intelligent enough
to communicate with humans that is,it can identify user emotions and change its behavior accordingly then
using machines could be more effective and friendly."the researchers wrote.

"It doesn't look too good, darling.I think you'd better pack a few things and go to your mother's place.
And you'd better take Rosie and Monty with you."
Putting down the phone,Sara sighed.Tomorrow was her husband Tony's birthday. She had planned to
cook him a nice meal and then surprise him with the new mountain bike she'd bought for him.If she went to
her mother's house,Tony wouldn't get his present for days.
However, her mother's house was the best place to be right now.Being on higher land,it would be safe
from the floods. It had been raining heavily for almost two weeks and the river near Sara and Tony's house
was rising higher and higher all the time.Tony and others from the village had spent the past two days putting

sandbags along the side of the river to stop it from overflowing. Now they feared that their hard work had
been useless and soon the whole valley would be flooded.
Sara dressed baby James in warm clothes and collected the things she would need for him over the next
few days. She put the lead on the dog and went in search of Monty, the cat.It took her a long time, but
eventually she found him safe and warm under the covers on her bed.She placed him in his cat basket and
took him into the kitchen where James and the dog,Rosie, were waiting.
Just as she was reaching for the car keys,Sara heard a sound like the noise bath water makes when you
pull out the plug. She looked at the backdoor, and saw water was flowing in undemeath.Turning around, she
saw dirty brown water fountaining out of the drain and filling the sink.Realizing that they were trapped by
the flood and that it became impossible for her to drive out, quickly she put James into her backpack and
pulled onto her back.Calling to Rosie, she picked up the cat basket and ran to the front of the house and out
into the front garden, where the car was parked.
Paragraph 1:
The water was already up to her knees, and Rosie was swimming beside
her
Par agraph 2:Sara,together with James,Rosie and Monty, was hungry and frightened on the roof of the
house when a boat appeared in the distance.
