After her father died, her mother taught and took other jobs at night to make extra money to raise her three children. Jessica’s older brothers showed an interest in the theater and often put on shows at home. Jessica said later that she was terrible in all of them. She performed in her first play called The Manderson Girls at 18. But few people watched this play. In 1932, she married the famous actor Jack Hawkins. Their wedding pictures were on the front page of many British newspapers. In the same year, critics in London recognized her great acting skill in her performance in the play Children in Uniform. In 1940, Jessica ended her first marriage and moved to the USA. In New York, she met actor Hume Cronyn. Two years later, they married and moved to Hollywood. Her turning point came in 1947 when she played the lead part in Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire. Tandy won the first of her four Tony awards for best actress in it. After that, Hollywood producers began to choose her to be in the movie. Jessica Tandy said she hated seeing herself in the movies. The study quantifies the environmental footprint of this recycling process, and finds it gives off less than half the greenhouse gases (GHGs) of conventional mining and uses about one-fourth of the water and energy of mining new metals. The environmental benefits are even greater for the scrap stream (废料流), which accounted for about 90% of the recycled supply studied. Battery recycling’s environmental impacts depend heavily on the processing facility’s location and electricity source. “A battery recycling plant in regions that rely heavily on electricity generated by burning coal would see a reduced climate advantage,” said Samantha Bunk e, one of the study’s three lead investigators. “On the other hand, freshwater shortages in regions with cleaner electricity are a great concern,” added Bunk e. Most of the study’s data for battery recycling came from Redwood Materials in Nevada — North America’s largest industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility — which benefits from the western U.S.’s cleaner energy mix. Redwood, which has since broken ground on a new facility in South Carolina, was one of the first to apply the lessons of this project to their own operations and environmental footprint. Its founder, JB Straubel said that the insights of this research have played a key role in refining Redwood’s battery recycling processes. “Thanks to the researchers’ observations, we have further reduced our environmental footprint,” he noted. While the U.S. now recycles about 50% of available lithium - ion batteries, it has successfully recycled 99% of lead-acid batteries for decades. “Given that used lithium-ion batteries contain materials with up to 10 times higher economic value, the opportunity is significant,” senior author William Tarpeh said. “For a future with a greatly increased supply of used batteries, we need to design and prepare a recycling system today from collection to processing back into new batteries with minimal environmental impact,” he added. “Hopefully, battery producers will consider how to make their batteries more recyclable in their future plans, too.” 46. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The effectiveness of energy use. B. Methods of conducting the study. C. The complexity of the recycling process. D. Advantages of recycling lithium - ion batteries. 47. Why is Redwood Materials mentioned? A. To show the key role of battery industries. B. To highlight its reduced climate advantage. C. To illustrate the practical use of the research. D. To criticize its lasting environmental footprint. 48. What does the underlined word “refining” mean in paragraph 4? A. Shaking. B. Bettering. C. Starting. D. Limiting. 49. What is Tarpeh’s suggestion for battery producers? A. Improve their recycling system. B. Limit the use of lead-acid batteries. C. Focus on their processing cost. D. Prioritize recyclability in their designs. 50. Which of the following statements can be judged as True according to the passage? A. Lithium - ion battery recycling has no environmental benefits compared to mining raw metals. B. The economic value of used lithium-ion batteries is lower than that of lead-acid batteries. C. Battery producers may pay more attention to recyclability in their future designs. D. Redwood Materials has no plans to build new facilities. 【答案】46. D 47. C 48. B 49. A 50. C 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍斯坦福大学研究表明锂离子电池回收比开采原金属更环保,及回收相关影响因素、应用和未来建议。 【46题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“The study quantifies the environmental footprint of this recycling process, and finds it gives off less than half the greenhouse gases (GHGs) of conventional mining and uses about one-fourth of the water and energy of mining new metals. The environmental benefits are even greater for the scrap stream (废料流), which accounted for about 90% of the recycled supply studied.(该研究量化了这种回收过程的环境足迹,发现其排放的温室气体不到传统采矿的一半,使用的水和能源约为开采新金属的四分之一。对于占所研究回收供应约90%的废料流来说,环境效益甚至更大。)”可知,第二段主要通过具体数据阐述锂离子电池回收在温室气体排放、水和能源消耗方面的环境优势。故选D项。 【47题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Most of the study’s data for battery recycling came from Redwood Materials in Nevada — North America’s largest industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling facility — which benefits from the western U.S.’s cleaner energy mix.(该研究中电池回收的大部分数据来自内华达州的红杉材料公司——北美最大的工业规模锂离子电池回收设施——该公司受益于美国西部更清洁的能源结构。)”和第四段中的“Redwood, which has since broken ground on a new facility in South Carolina, was one of the first to apply the lessons of this project to their own operations and environmental footprint.(红杉材料公司此后已在南卡罗来纳州破土动工建设新设施,它是首批将该项目经验应用于自身运营及环境足迹管理的企业之一)”可知,提及红杉材料公司是为了举例说明该研究在实际工业生产中的应用价值。 根据最后一段中的““For a future with a greatly increased supply of used batteries, we need to design and prepare a recycling system today from collection to processing back into new batteries with minimal environmental impact,” he added. “Hopefully, battery producers will consider how to make their batteries more recyclable in their future plans, too.”(他补充道:“对于未来废旧电池供应量大幅增加的情况,我们如今就需要设计并构建一套回收系统——从电池收集、加工处理到重新制成新电池,全程将环境影响降至最低”“希望电池生产商在未来的规划中,也能考虑如何提高其产品的可回收性。”)”可知,Tarpeh建议电池生产商改进回收系统,以应对未来废旧电池增多的趋势。故选A项。 【50题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Hopefully, battery producers will consider how to make their batteries more recyclable in their future plans, too.(希望电池生产商在未来的计划中也能考虑如何使他们的电池更具可回收性。)”可知,Tarpeh表达了对电池生产商的期望,由此可推断,电池生产商未来可能会更关注电池的可回收性设计。故选C项。 D It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. They’re probably the most hardworking, ambitious people in America and their problems are not properly appreciated. People like the Secretary of Education simply don’t know what they’re talking about when they knock students. Nor do those who complain about falling academic standards. The vast majority of the nation’s 12 million students are struggling to pay for their educations. They are part of the invisible workforce. Many hold down full-time jobs. They’re frying hamburgers, photographing weddings, working in construction, and waiting on tables. The fact that they even show up for classes is a wonderful event. The financial situation of most students explains a lot about what is happening in schools. Why are the traditional courses so unpopular? Why are students flocking to accounting and computer science and any professional programs that seem to lead to careers? Answer: Today’s working student has been forced into a kind of premature matter-of-fact way of viewing things. Romance is gone. The notion of transforming one’s self through study alone has disappeared. Today’s students seek freedom from manual labor, and the status conferred by a good job. There are other consequences. Today’s students don’t have much time or energy to be devoted, and carry out independent research or even do serious homework. That’s the secret behind falling academic standards. Students have become consumers. They want grades and certifications. Their professors can’t be expected to give a grade of failure to students who are clearly tired from the effort to pay their bills. There’s a lot wrong with this situation. It’s twisting the definition of education out of shape. Worse, it’s creating a generation that is totally unpleasant. The brightest students turn out to be yuppies (雅皮士). The vast majority are, at least, good-natured semi-literates. The time has run out for philosophical debates about fixed courses of study. What this country needs is someone to stand up and say that being a full-time student during one’s formative years is an honorable calling worthy of support. If families can’t or won’t give it to their children, then the government should. 51. The author’s purpose in writing this article is to __________. A. awaken the whole society to the problems today’s college students face B. warn Americans that academic standards are falling C. advise college students to study hard D. provide a suggestion that only full-time students be enrolled 52. The most suitable word to describe the author’s feelings about today’s college students is _________. A. criticize B. sympathize C. complain D. urge 53. Which of the following cannot be learned from the passage? A. Many students are often absent from classes. B. Traditional courses are not popular. C. Students commit crimes with computers. D. Students don’t devote much time and energy to their homework. 54. By saying “Romance is gone” in paragraph 5, the author means ____________. A. today’s students do not believe in love stories any more B. today’s students become more practical in dealing with things C. students think there is no affection any more and break up with their lovers D. today’s students hold matter-of-fact opinions on love 55. Which of the following suggestions will the author not agree with? A. We should encourage students to give up full-time jobs. B. Families should offer their children more help financially. C. We should stand up and say something for today’s college students. D. We should make more strict regulations to force students to study hard. 【答案】51. A 52. B 53. C 54. B 55. Once, I was travelling by train with my mom and my elder sister to visit my grandparents in another city. It was a day journey and we entered the ladies compartment(车室)of the train. It was crowded but we got seats and settled down. We kept our luggage under the seats and waited for the train to start. Ladies kept on coming inside. The seats were quickly taken. Only one seat was empty when a woman with a baby entered. She was about to go over to the empty place when a big and strong man entered and walked to the seat quickly, sitting down with a thump(重击声). Therefore, the lady with the child held on to her bag and stood in the corner. I was watching all this angrily. I expected the woman standing there or any of the other ladies to speak out to ask the man to leave the ladies compartment. However, no one spoke. My mom and my sister had their eyes shut to rest, unaware of anything wrong. I decided I could not disturb them. I could have offered my place but I was already squashed(挤扁)between my mom and my sister. The train started. The woman standing beside the man was swaying(摇摆) to and fro with the train, with the screaming child in her arms. However, the manner-less man had no reaction. I was furious with the man for his bad behavior. I could no longer bear it, so I decided to help the woman in some way. I got up and walked calmly over to the man. I asked him if he could read. He made a bad face and said he could. Next, I asked him to read what was written on the back of his seat. He did so and saw “Ladies”on it. He got the point and left the compartment in a big hurry, almost falling. 56. Why did the author take the train journey? (no more than 5 words) ________________ 57. B Jessica Tandy is probably best known for winning an Academy Award in 1989 for the movie Driving Miss Daisy. She was the oldest person to have won the award. But for many years, she had received praise for her great performances. Jessica Tandy was born in London in 1909. After her father died, her mother taught and took other jobs at night to make extra money to raise her three children. Jessica’s older brothers showed an interest in the theater and often put on shows at home. Jessica said later that she was terrible in all of them. But she said taking part in those plays as a child created a desire in her to be someone else. Jessica loved going to the theater. This love led her to attend an acting school in 1924. She was astonished when she won the Academy Award for Driving Miss Daisy. She said that the wonderful part she had made up for her lack of experience in movies. 41. Jessica was as confident as commonly considered C Recycling lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries to recover their critical metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt has significantly lower environmental impacts than mining raw metals, according to a new Stanford University life cycle analysis published in Nature Communications. D It’s high time someone spoke up for today’s college students. 第二卷 非选择题 (共25分) 一、10分 阅读下面的短文,并根据短文内容回答后面的问题。 I remembered an incident when I was a teenage girl clearly.
