How does it feel when people listen to you without interrupting(打断)
or giving their opinions? This is called active listening—a great way to
understand other people’s feelings and build trust.
The meaning of active listening
Active listening means listening to people carefully. It also means
watching their body language, like facial expressions or gestures, to
understand how they feel. The Week Junior reader Annie, aged 11,
explains what it means to her, “When my friends tell me something
16
important, I listen to what they’re trying to say. I can tell if they’re upset
or happy by their voices and faces. This makes me feel like I understand
them better.”
▲
When you listen to your friends without cutting in or giving your
opinion, it shows that you value what they’re saying. This not only helps
avoid mistakes but also strengthens friendships. Samaritans is a charity
(慈善机构) that supports people by listening to their worries. It says,
“①Listening to people makes them feel valued and understood.”
The ways to be active listeners
Listen to your friends carefully, and avoid jumping in with your own
thoughts and feelings. If you really want to talk, Samaritans suggests
making a listening sign instead, like nodding your head. Besides, ask
questions or say things that need more than a “yes” or “no” as the answer.
②At the same time, pay attention to their facial expressions and body
language. Remember: Active listening takes practice.#3.1

After class, as Wang Xueru quietly packed up while bearing the
pain of stomachache, a student walked to her. Without a word, the
girl handed Wang a cup of warm tea and a note. “If the sky is cloudy,
I will be your sunshine,” the note read. At that moment, Wang felt

yourself; when successful, help the world”—guided her road through
years of university volunteer work.
From her first year at college, she took an active part in volunteering,
becoming the leader of a university volunteer group and starting projects
online to connect children across the country with school classes and
cultural activities. By the time she reached her graduation year, Wang set
her sights on joining the teaching program in the countryside, which is
called Postgraduate(研究生) Education Supporting Team of Chinese Youth
Volunteers.

The Tan family, from Hunan, was new to the block and Mrs. Tan
loved to cook. Her family enjoyed her stinky tofu(臭豆腐), so she cooked
it twice a week.
One afternoon, they heard a knock on the door. It was from the
community workers. They had received a complaint(投诉) from the Tans’
neighbors, the Lees, about the smell of the stinky tofu.
Mrs. Tan said sorry and decided that she would close the kitchen
window the next time. That was what she did the following week.

Last year I joined the soccer team at our school because I had an
interest in playing soccer. Before long, there was an important soccer
ball game held at our school.
Interestingly, I had never played soccer at all before joining the
soccer team, so I had to work hard in training. Every day, I spent
quite a lot of time practicing playing soccer and I learned passing and
blocking skills from my friends. After training and learning, my skills
improved so much that I could pass the ball well and shoot with my
teammates.
60
We then had our first game. In the game, we were almost matched
with the other team. My main task was to stop the other team’s players
from scoring and pass the ball. Once I accidentally kicked the ball out of
the lines. I said sorry, getting ready to be criticized(批评). But to my
surprise, my teammates just touched my shoulder and told me that I
was doing well. The crowd even cheered and encouraged me to keep
playing!
I felt the support from others and the beauty of the competition as a
team member. For the rest of the game, I tried my best.
When the whistle(哨子声) sounded, we tied 1-1, which meant a
penalty shoot-out(点球大战) followed. My teammates and I were very
nervous because we weren’t sure if we could score a penalty, but our
leader hugged us with a bright smile on her face. She said, “Don’t
worry about the score. What you should do is to enjoy every game!”
Even though we didn’t win the game in the end, I have a new
understanding of soccer—honor and victory aren’t all that matter; what’s
more important is teamwork.#6

Step 3 构篇章, 润词句
【组句成篇】
The power of teamwork
Teamwork is of great significance in our lives. Firstly, by working
together, we can combine personal advantages and finish tasks more
quickly. ①Moreover, we can show our strengths and learn from each
other.
Once, I worked with my classmates on creating a short English
play for the school art festival. At first, we had different opinions and
caused some problems.
74
However, we got them over by listening to each other. We made sure
that everyone played their part in the group work. In the end, we
created a great short play successfully.
From this experience, I understand that each member’s effort is
important. ②When we work as a team, we can overcome the
difficulties we face. We should respect and make good use of the
different ideas and talents within the team.

From my point of view, I firmly believe that
expressing ideas indirectly is more beneficial for good communication.
For one thing, respecting others’ feelings is necessary, and
indirect expression is a great way to achieve this. For instance,
when giving suggestions to a friend, using gentle language can make

them more willing to accept them. For another thing, it helps avoid
arguing with others. When we disagree with someone, an indirect
way of putting forward our views can keep the conversation going
smoothly.
In conclusion, I think indirect expression is a wiser approach in
interpersonal communication.

As far as I’m concerned, expressing
ideas directly is a better choice in communication.
Firstly, it saves time. When we express our thoughts directly,
there’s no need for others to guess, and problems can be solved
quickly. For example, in a group project, directly stating our

plans helps team members start working right away. Secondly, it
helps avoid misunderstandings. Clear and direct communication leaves
no room for misunderstanding. People know exactly what we mean,
which is beneficial for building good relationships.
Therefore, I think being direct in expressing ideas can make
our communication more efficient.
