Can you imagine we may taste food and drinks “online” one day?
An “e-Taste” tool makes it possible.
In our real life, when we eat or drink, our teeth and tongues (舌头)
break the food into little pieces. During this process, very small things
called molecules (分子) come out. The taste buds (味蕾) on our tongues
catch these molecules and “tell” the brain.
Similarly, the “e-Taste” tool allows
people to experience the taste of food and
drinks, even if they are not actually eating
39
them. How does it work? There are two essential parts in the “e-Taste”
tool.
The first part works like our tongues. It checks for five special
chemicals in food or drinks. Then, the second part mixes these flavors
(味道) with water to make them taste like real food. People can try them
with a small tool to feel the flavors.
To check if the “e-Taste” works, scientists did a test. Volunteers
tasted the drinks made by the “e-Taste” tool. After that, they had to
choose which food flavor it was, like lemon, cake, fried chicken, or
coffee. ▲
In the future, the“e-Taste” tool will be used in different ways. For
example, a chef (主厨) in Italy will teach students in China how to
make pizza. Using the “e-Taste” tool, students will “taste” the tomato
sauce and cheese.
Some researchers believe that by 2035, sharing tastes will be as easy
as sending emojis (表情). People will be able to send not only messages,
pictures, and videos, but also tastes, making communication more
interesting!#2.2.4

The Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟) in Dunhuang, known as a “desert art
museum”, face big dangers. Over 20% of its colorful paintings are
cracking (裂开) or losing colors because of weather and visitors. Some
grottoes are now closed for protection. But don't worry! High-tech tools
are working together to “help” these cultural wonders. Small flying robots
with cameras are used to find tiny cracks. AI studies old painting
methods to guess the colors of faded (褪色) areas. Robots use super-thin
glue to repair the cracks carefully—like fixing a butterfly's wing. Broken
temple parts are rebuilt using 3D printers.
50
But technology isn't just for experts! A company called Sense Time
used AR and AI to bring old paintings to life. You can “walk” inside
the paintings on your mobile phone. They also made digital artworks
from other famous works in China, like horses drawn by Xu Beihong
and art from the Dunhuang Grottoes. Another fun game is called “100
Scenes of Jiangnan”. People can experience “real” Ming Dynasty's social
life and art in it. For example, the game has a special kind of art from
the Ming Dynasty, called Luodian lacquerware (螺钿漆器).
Ancient artists put pretty shells (贝壳), gold and silver on it. In the
game, players can make their own digital one. They can add flowers,
birds and characters, just like the artists did in the old days.
However, some people worry: Will old repair skills disappear? Can
screens replace the magic of seeing real paintings? Researcher Li Xia
says, “Technology saves the past, but love keeps it alive.” The best way
to protect history isn't just with machines—it's by inspiring (鼓舞) young
hearts to care.#3
