【中考真题】
When I was young, I loved paper cutting and I was pretty good at it. As I grew up, I became busy and didn’t have much time for it. Later, I stopped doing it.
However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. As soon as they saw the girl practicing, they started to beat drums and gongs for her and quickly she did a lion dance in return. People around all cheered for her. Her love for the ancient Chinese culture evoked my strong memories of paper cutting.
I remembered the happy times of making paper cuttings with my teacher and friends in the club. When I was ten, I joined the paper cutting club. Every time we held a paper cutting show, our works attracted many visitors. The girl in the news encouraged me to go on with paper cutting. The children were quiet and seldom expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to the teachers’ office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class, but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.
These days, anyone can be described as a “Lei Feng” if they would like to help others. More and more people like Lugazo give warmth to people in need.

Wang Haoze made history in 2024 as China’s first female flight engineer and a member of the Shenzhou-19 crew. Her journey to space is a story of hard work. It shows that even the hardest goals can be achieved (实现) with a willing mind.
Born in 1990 in Hebei Province, Wang grew up in a strict but loving family. Her mother was a teacher, and her father worked as a policeman. From a young age, she learned the value of keeping on doing something. In 2008, she passed gaokao and joined Southeast University in Nanjing. There, she was good at studying and loved sports, often competing in races.
After graduating in 2015, Wang became a rocket engineer in Beijing. In 2018, she applied for (申请) China’s astronaut program. Over two years, she faced hard tests against 2,500 people. Although failing many times, she never gave up. Finally, she became one of the 18 new astronauts — and the only woman in the group.
On October 30, 2024, Wang’s dream came true. She flew into space with two teammates aboard Shenzhou-19, becoming China’s third female astronaut.

Do you often have conversations with your children? How do you feel? I’ve found that conversations with my children have started to turn into something that I don’t like. I think I may do something wrong because I don’t always think before I open my mouth. For example, when my kids tell me something about their worries, I will go into the mom mode (模式). I become an expert (专家) on everything and teach them how to do all the things as I like.
I want to be part of their lives. More importantly, I want to stop them from making mistakes. However, they just want someone to listen.
I’m not alone in this problem. One day, a friend told me that her son never listened to anything she said. I know that feeling. But I’m learning that talking to is not the same as talking with.
Giving advice to children can be full of problems. Although we may think we are sharing our wisdom (智慧) with them, they see something else. They just see a controlling parent. They think they are not accepted as adults with their own thoughts.
When they talk with you, they’re not looking for any advice. They may not even want a solution (解决办法) to a difficult problem. What they’re hoping for is a safe place to talk with a person who understands and supports them.
Because of this, I want to become a better parent by being a better listener. It’s not easy, but I’m trying to do it anyway.

Noah Webster was born on October 16th, 1758 in the West Division of Hartford. His father farmed and worked as a weaver (织布工). His mother was a housewife.
Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved to learn so much that his parents let him go to Yale University. Noah graduated in 1778. He wanted to study law, but his parents didn’t have more money to support him. So, in order to make a living, Noah taught in Glastonbury, Hartford and West Hartford. Later, he studied law.

Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books. So in 1783, Noah wrote his own textbook A Grammatical Institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue Backed Speller” because of its blue cover. For 100 years, Noah’s book taught children how to read, spell and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time.
When Noah was 43, he started writing the first American dictionary. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah finally completed his dictionary in 1828, at the age of 70, the first American dictionary came out. When Noah Webster died in 1843, he was considered an American hero.

Volunteering is becoming more and more popular among people, especially the young. It’s a great way to contribute to society while also developing oneself.
Last summer, I joined a volunteer program at an old people’s home. On the first day, when we arrived, the elderly people welcomed us warmly. We were divided into groups to do different tasks. Some of us cleaned the rooms and swept the floors. Others chatted with the old people, listening to their stories about the past. These stories were full of wisdom and life experiences.
One of the most meaningful activities was organizing a performance for them. We prepared some simple songs and dances. The old people enjoyed every minute of it. Their bright smiles and applause made all our hard work worthwhile. It was a wonderful feeling to bring joy to others.
However, volunteering is not always easy. Sometimes, we faced difficulties. For example, communicating with some elderly people who had hearing problems was a challenge. But we didn’t give up. We used gestures and wrote down words on paper to communicate with them. Through these experiences, I learned patience and how to solve problems in different situations.

Every year from March to October, Christian Moullec, also known as “Birdman”, takes to the skies aboard his two-seater light aircraft. However, the 65-year-old Frenchman’s daily 30-minute-long flight is not to enjoy the wonderful views, but to guide groups of young white-fronted geese to migrate (迁徙) safely.
Back in 1995, Christian noticed that the white-fronted geese were facing danger when migrating from Germany to Sweden. Inspired by an Austrian zoologist known as “the man who walked with geese”, he built his handmade aircraft and tried to get the geese to follow him along migration routes (路线), which would protect them from bird hunters.
However, getting grown geese to follow his lead would be challenging. As young geese only imitate and follow whomever they regard as their “mother”, Christian decided to raise these birds from birth and live with them.
To help raise money to protect not just the geese but birds worldwide, Christian often allows paying tourists to join him. With the trained geese flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a 15-hour flight away, are treated to different kinds of birds as well as breathtaking views of castles (城堡) and cities.
Christian often brings his camera along for the flights, taking photos not just for their beauty but also for what they describe. “More than a third of wild birds have disappeared from Europe in the last 30 years due to human’s activities. It’s just a disaster!” he says, “The famous French writer Victor Hugo once said that the beautiful is as useful as the useful, so I hope that the beautiful photos of flying geese will be useful to migratory birds and to humans.”

Volunteering has changed me a lot. It has made me more responsible and empathetic. I realize that everyone can make a difference in the world, no matter how small the act may be. It’s not only about giving but also about receiving.
