阅读短文,从方框内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。
“I want to become a spaceman to explore the universe.” When you are thinking like this, you are “Thinking Big”. Thinking big means aiming to achieve a lot. It helps you realize your dreams. So, how can you think big? 1
Think like a kid. Kids are curious about everything. They are always asking big questions like “Can I invent a magic mirror to see the future?” Think like a kid, and you will push yourself to have big ideas.
Set clear goals. Without goals, big ideas are nearly daydreams. 2 They guide you to your destinations (目的地). After you set goals, you know exactly what to do and where to go. The clearer your goals are, the better thinker you will be.
3 Without challenges, there will never be big ideas. Without challenges, there will never be much progress. Picture your challenges in your head, and you will think big and get unexpected solutions.
Think of a better world. A better world needs everyone’s efforts. But remember that thinking big isn’t about being famous as a single person. 4
Would you like to try the ways above to think big? You might become a big thinker! Who knows?
A.Think big for yourself.
B.Imagine your challenges.
C.Goals are just like road maps.
D.Here are some useful ways to help you.
E.It is about aiming high for the whole world.

That one looks like a rabbit. Or is the larger one a whale? Whatever shape they take, they’re clouds. So what are clouds, exactly? 1
●Clouds are floating (浮动的) water.
Clouds are made of small water drops. Each drop is made of many flying water molecules (分子). They stay together around a tiny piece of dust (尘埃) or salt. How small are cloud drops? A shoebox of clouds might hold millions of cloud drops.
· 2
Clouds look light and soft, but they hold much water. And water is heavy. The water in an average cotton-ball cloud may weigh as much as a group of elephants.
·Things live in clouds.
Have you ever dreamed of living on a cloud? It would probably be cold and wet, with no place to sit down. But weather balloons have discovered insects inside clouds as high as 20 miles above the earth. 3 Airplane pilots have ever found butterflies at 10,000 feet.
·Clouds don’t last.
Clouds are always changing. They form and then change into gas soon. They are changing shapes as the wind blows them across the sky. Will the shapes stay long? 4 But some small soft clouds often last 10 minutes.
So take a look at the cloud before it disappears—what does that cloud look like?
A.Clouds are heavy.
B.Clouds look like elephants.
C.Some big clouds can hang around all day.
D.The following can help you know more about them.
E.Most of the insects inside clouds are blown there by the wind.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.E 4.C

Our road to peace
On Sept 3, a big military parade took place in Beijing. It marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931—1945) and the World Anti-Fascist War. 1
In 1931, Japan occupied (占领) parts of Northeast China. In 1937, it started a full invasion (侵略). 2 About 35 million Chinese were killed or injured. China made a great contribution to the victory in World War Ⅱ in 1945 and helped bring peace to the world. These experiences show the Chinese people’s love of peace, not the“law of the jungle (丛林法则)”.
3 For example, Japan is thinking about changing its pacifist Constitution (和平宪法) and the US has left some international agreements and put high taxes on imports (进口关税). These actions are bad for the world economy (经济).
The experience of the World Anti-Fascist War showed that countries must work together to solve common problems.
China now wants to grow strong by improving its economy, science, culture, and relationships with other countries. 4
The parade has shown China’s support for peace, and the country has become stronger after its painful experiences.
A.So far, the economy has developed a lot in many countries.
B.A modern army is also needed to protect China’s safety and world peace.
C.It was a history lesson for the whole world.
D.Today, the world also needs to choose between peace and war.
E.The Chinese people fought bravely for more than 10 years.
【答案】1.C 2.E 3.D 4.B

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no” or “we don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. 1 .
Why? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett.
2 . “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies (星系),” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
3 . But now, powerful telescopes allow scientists to discover smaller planets in other solar-systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals (信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. 4 By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”
A.Record your voice just like you are having conversations with robots.
B.The second reason is size—the universe is huge…
C.However, this is changing and maybe we will communicate with them.
D.They also think we will soon contact (联系) these beings.
E.In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe.

阅读短文,从方框内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。
When we think of farming, we often picture grass, blue skies, cows, and sheep. But now, a new meat industry (产业) is rising. It looks very different from the traditional one. 1
The idea began in 1931. Scientists worked for years and made it happen. Lab-grown meat does not come from animals. Instead, it grows from a single cell (细胞) in a container. 2 As this industry grows, people raised a question: Is lab-grown meat good for nature?
3 For example, KFC once tried to make some chicken products from lab-grown meat. Some believe it’s environmentally friendly in the long run. It does not require land, water, or feed. And it avoids greenhouse (温室) gases perfectly.
But a study by the University of California shows a different view. 4 The scientists compared the carbon (碳) footprint of both ways. One kilogram of beef makes around 100 kilograms of CO₂. But lab-grown meat may produce 4 to 25 times more than that! This is because energy is needed to run the containers where cells grow.
However, many scientists are still working on lab-grown meat, so the result is not final. It seems that lab-grown meat needs more time to prove itself.
A.Many companies say yes.
B.It’s called “lab-grown meat”.
C.In this way, no animals need to be killed.
D.Lab-grown meat has more advantages than traditional meat.
E.It found that lab-grown meat might be even worse for the earth.

When you use a knife and fork, you have to take the knife with your right hand and the fork with your left hand, or you can’t put food into your mouth. But with chopsticks, you can solve the eating problems with just one hand. 1
Chopsticks were called zhu or jia in ancient China. It is said that they were invented by Da Yu, who successfully controlled the heavy flood (洪水). One day he was busy dealing with the flood. In order to save time when eating, he used two sticks from a tree to take the hot food. That was how chopsticks came into use. 2
In fact, the earliest chopsticks found in China were made of bronze (青铜), which were unearthed (挖掘) from Yinxu in Anyang city, Henan Province.

How to Improve Your Reading
Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task. 1 Reading well in English is useful for many reasons, not only for taking tests. If you want to improve your reading in English, the following is just for you!
Choose right reading materials (材料)
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also a lot more books you can read. 2 Here is a good rule to follow: choose reading materials where you understand at least 80% of the content (内容).
Be intentional (意图明确的).
Being intentional means doing something on purpose with a reason in mind. With reading, you need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day. 3 To make sure your daily practice gets done, spare some time and put it in your study plan!
4
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary (词汇) and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used together in a consistent (一致的) way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.
Don’t try to understand everything.
As you’re practicing your reading, you need to accept the fact that you might not understand every single word, and that’s OK! Your brain can’t learn so many new things at one time. It’s more important to get the big picture of what you are reading.
A.Read word groups.
B.Don’t choose a book that is too easy or too difficult.
C.You could also be intentional about planning a time to read.
D.But it’s something you’ll have to do on your language learning journey.
E.And you can go back to check the new things you don’t understand later.

Recently, China has begun building a large hydropower project (水电站项目) in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in Xizang Autonomous Region. The project will mainly provide electricity for other areas while also meeting the local needs.
1 It then runs through India and finally flows into Bangladesh. In Xizang, the river gets most of its water from melting snow and glaciers (冰川).
The river passes through the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon (大峡谷), the world’s deepest canyon. At one point in Nyingchi, it makes a sharp turn called the “Great Bend”, where the water level drops over 2,000 metres within a 50-kilometre distance. 2 This new project will consist of five hydropower stations, which will form the world’s largest hydropower group. It will also include a tunnel (隧道) about 20 kilometres long built through a mountain.
The project is expected to cost around 1.4 trillion yuan. 3 Once completed, the hydropower group will provide about 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year—three times the power of the Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), which is now the world’s largest power station.
It is reported that the project aims to speed up the development of clean energy, greatly improve the lives of local people, and actively fight climate change. In addition, the project will help reduce flood risk along the river. 4
A.This requires a lot of energy.
B.It will be fully completed by 2045.

Eating a Rainbow of Healthy Food
“Eating the rainbow” is a phrase we often hear. It means eating fruits and vegetables of many different colors. This is a very healthy habit. 1 However, many brightly colored candies and sodas get their colors from artificial dyes (人工色素), which are not healthy.

In ancient China, people called a man of great virtue (美德) a gentleman. In the world of flowers, plum blossoms (梅花) , orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums (菊花) are known as the four gentlemen in China. That’s because these plants’ natural characters have something in common with human virtues. 1
The plum tree is famous for its flowers opening in the dead of winter. 2 This makes it difficult to go unnoticed. It stands for inner beauty and humility (谦逊) under hard conditions. According to historical records, plum blossoms appeared on drawing paper 1,600 years ago.
Grown in deep mountain valleys (山谷) , the orchid was named as the fourth of China’s ten famous flowers. With the smell making people’s minds fresh, and the elegant (优雅的) shapes swinging in the wind, orchids stand for elegance in Chinese people’s eyes.
The bamboo is thin with the inner empty. It stands for tolerance (忍受性) and open-mindedness. 3 For example, Su Shi once wrote down “Rather eat without meat than live without bamboo” in his poem to express his deep love for bamboo.
Chrysanthemums were planted as early as three thousand years ago. When nearly all the flowers fall, the chrysanthemum opens in the cold autumn air and predicts the coming of winter. It stands for the virtue to go through all difficulties smoothly. 4
A.It was admired by many poets and painters in ancient times.
B.It is valued in Chinese culture for its character.
C.They have all long been common subjects in Chinese art, like paintings and poems.
D.Its fine smell fills the air at one of the coldest times of a year.
E.So the chrysanthemum is a traditional flower loved by Chinese people.
3 The meaning of chopsticks is one of the symbols of Chinese food culture. Do you notice that one end of chopsticks is square and the other end is round? So, why? According to our ancestors, the round end symbolized Heaven and the square end symbolized Earth. Besides, chopsticks are used in pairs.

Recently, the state of West Virginia in the US passed a new law. It bans (禁止) several artificial food dyes in school meals. 2 The law will go into effect on August 1, 2025. On that date, schools in West Virginia will not be able to serve lunches that include certain dyes.
3 Research shows that they can have negative effects. For example, they can cause hyperactivity (多动症) in children. A scientist explained that our bodies see these artificial dyes as foreign and harmful.
So why do companies use them? The main reason is that they are very cheap. Using natural ingredients (材料) for color costs more money. 4
The scientist advises people to choose more fresh foods, like oranges and bananas. He said, “The real rainbow diet of natural foods is good for you.”
