In the San Diego Zoo, there lived Lucas, a four- year- old African penguin (企鹅). Lucas was not like the others because he suffered from a disease known as bumble foot, which includes a range of bad foot conditions that stop animals from standing upright, and a lack of treatment can lead to possible death.
For Lucas, life had been a series of treatments and disappointments (失望). The zoo’s team had tried everything, but nothing seemed to work on his disease. Dr. Beth Bicknese, a member of the zoo’s team, said, “I’ve looked after Lucas for years. I am very sad when Lucas develops pains.”
Then, there was a hope. The zoo’s team got the help of Thera-Paw, a company that designs products to help animals move better.
“The orthopedic shoes (矫形鞋) from Thera- Paw help Lucas to fully join the group and show behaviors that are more typical for a penguin — such as climbing the rocks, swimming, nesting and finding a suitable mate,” said Dr. Beth Bicknese.
Debbie Denton, a senior wildlife care specialist in the team, was there when Lucas first put on his shoes. “We were pleasantly surprised to see the immediate change in him,” she said. “Seeing him move about now gives us hope that he may be OK going forward and able to live a full life.”
With every step Lucas took, he walked better, stood up straighter, and was more balanced. The rocky place that was hard to move around before was now fun to explore for Lucas.
24. How did the disease affect Lucas?
A. He couldn’t stand upright. B. He was unable to lie down.
C. His eyesight became poor. D. His sense of smell dropped.

China started a plan — Weight Management. It is from June 2024 to June 2027 and helps people focus on health problems.

24-year-old Canadian volunteer teacher Sophie Morrison arrived in a small African village in 2022 to teach at the local primary school. She quickly grew close to her students, using games and stories to make lessons lively.
On July 22nd — exactly six months into her volunteer work — a sudden storm hit with thunder crashing nonstop. By nightfall, nearby rivers overflowed, and floodwaters rushed into the village, trapping families in their homes. Sophie was carefully preparing for the students’ lessons for the next day in her room when she heard people crying out in fear from outside. She immediately went to the door and saw water rising fast around the houses.
Picking up a boat borrowed from a local fisherman, she waded (蹚水) through waist-high water toward the cries. 9-year-old Amara and her 5-year-old brother Kofi were trapped in the water, holding onto a wooden chair. “Ms. Sophie’s boat shook in the water, but she held us close until we reached the dry shelter (庇护所),” Amara later said.
The next day, at the shelter under a tree, Sophie didn’t forget her role as a teacher. She devised some simple lessons — she used stones and sticks to teach the students. “Learning gives us hope,” she said.
As the end of one year’s volunteer work came, it was time for Sophie to go back home. Before she left, the villagers held a simple but sincere farewell party. The memories of the life in the village lasted forever in Sophie’s heart.
32. What can we know about Sophie Morrison?
A. She went back home in 2024. B. She volunteered in Africa in 2022.
C. She left Africa after six months. D. She failed to make her class interesting.
33. What led Sophie Morrison to the door on the evening of July 22nd?
A. People’s shouts. B. The rain.
C. The thunder. D. Her fear of darkness.
34. Why did Sophie Morrison borrow a boat from a local fisherman?
A. To get the wooden chair. B. To play with her students.
C. To save kids trapped in water. D. To drive herself to the dry shelter.
35. What does the underlined word “devised” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Avoided. B. Changed. C. Pointed out. D. Thought up.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D

根据第二段“By nightfall, nearby rivers overflowed, and floodwaters rushed into the village, trapping families in their homes. Sophie was carefully preparing for the students’ lessons for the next day in her room when she heard people crying out in fear from outside. She immediately went to the door and saw water rising fast around the houses.(夜幕降临之时,附近的河流水位上涨,洪水涌入村庄,将村民困在了家中。索菲正在自己的房间里精心准备第二天学生的课程,这时她听到外面有人惊恐地呼喊。她立刻跑到门口,看到房屋周围水位迅速上涨)”可知,Sophie Morrison听到了屋外的呼喊声,于是来到门旁。故选A。
根据第三段“Picking up a boat borrowed from a local fisherman, she waded (蹚水) through waist-high water toward the cries. 9-year-old Amara and her 5-year-old brother Kofi were trapped in the water, holding onto a wooden chair. “Ms. Sophie’s boat shook in the water, but she held us close until we reached the dry shelter (庇护所),” Amara later said.(她从一位当地渔民那里借来一艘小船,然后趟过齐腰深的积水,朝着传来呼喊声的地方走去。9岁的阿玛拉和她5岁的弟弟科菲被困在水中,紧紧抓着一把木椅。“索菲女士的船在水中摇晃,但她一直紧紧地护着我们,直到我们到达干燥的避难所,”阿玛拉后来说道)”可知,Sophie Morrison 借船是为了救助被困的孩子们。故选C。
【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“Sophie didn’t forget her role as a teacher.(索菲没有忘记自己教师的职责)”和画线词后“she used stones and sticks to teach the students.(她用石头和木棍来给学生们上课)”可知,索菲没有忘记自己教师的职责,想出了一些简单的教学内容——她用石头和树枝来给学生们授课。
Family meetings are a good way to improve communication among all family members. To hold a successful family meeting, you need to avoid the following common mistakes.
Giving up too soon. ____36____. It may take some time for everyone to grow comfortable with family meetings. But if you hold them regularly (定期) and try to make them better, your meetings can become helpful to everyone in the family.
____37____. Don’t use your meetings to single out one person for creating a problem and don’t lecture (说教) the kids about the way they act. You might take a problem-solving approach by saying, “The house has been pretty messy lately. What can we do about that?”
Letting kids have too much power. While you want to ask for the kids’ opinions, make it clear that they don’t have equal say in important family matters, like whether you’re going to move. ____38____. Then they know you are interested in hearing their thoughts on the matters.
Going too far off the topic. Your kids may begin to get off the topic and if you don’t bring the conversation back to the task at hand, you may feel the meeting is pointless. ____39____
Getting into arguments (争吵). ____40____. Family meetings are a great time to introduce socially proper ways to deal with disagreements. If the kids start to argue noisily or someone crosses the line, stop them at once.

C. If your first meeting doesn’t go well, don’t give up

F. Even so, let them know the adults are open to their opinions
G. At times, a family meeting ends up with an endless argument
C 37. A 38. F 39. E 40. G
由上文“Giving up too soon. (放弃得太早)”可知,本空要说跟“不要放弃”有关的话题,由下文“It may take some time for everyone to grow comfortable with family meetings. But if you hold them regularly (定期) and try to make them better, your meetings can become helpful to everyone in the family. (每个人可能都需要一段时间才能逐渐适应家庭会议。但是如果你定期举行并努力改进,你的家庭会议就能对家里的每个人都有帮助)”可知,即使第一次家庭会议不成功,也不要放弃,故C选项“If your first meeting doesn’t go well, don’t give up (如果你的第一次会议进行得不顺利,不要放弃)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选C。
【37题详解】
由下文“Don’t use your meetings to single out one person for creating a problem and don’t lecture (说教) the kids about the way they act. (不要用会议来单独指出某一个人制造了问题,也不要就孩子们的行为方式对他们进行说教)”可知,本空要说跟“不要说教”有关的话题,A选项“Turning a meeting into a lecture (把会议变成说教)”能引出下文,符合题意。故选A。
由上文“While you want to ask for the kids’ opinions, make it clear that they don’t have equal say in important family matters, like whether you’re going to move. (虽然你想征求孩子们的意见,但要明确他们在家庭重要事务上,比如是否搬家,没有平等发言权)”和下文“Then they know you are interested in hearing their thoughts on the matters. (那么他们就会知道你很想听听他们对这些事情的想法)”可知,虽然孩子们在家庭重要事务上没有平等发言权,大人们还是要倾听孩子们的意见,本空应对此进行解释。F选项“Even so, let them know the adults are open to their opinions (即便如此,也要让他们知道大人们是愿意倾听他们的意见的)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选F。
由上文“Your kids may begin to get off the topic and if you don’t bring the conversation back to the task at hand, you may feel the meeting is pointless. (你的孩子们可能会开始偏离主题,如果你不把谈话带回当前的任务,你可能会觉得这次会议毫无意义)”可知,孩子们可能会偏离主题,故本空要说跟“把谈话带回当前的任务”有关的话题,E选项“In this case, step in and tell them to get to the main topic (在这种情况下,介入并告诉他们回到主题)”能承接上文,符合题意。故选E。
【40题详解】
由上文“Getting into arguments (争吵)”可知,本空要说跟“争吵”有关的话题,由下文“Family meetings are a great time to introduce socially proper ways to deal with disagreements. If the kids start to argue noisily or someone crosses the line, stop them at once. (家庭会议是介绍社会上处理分歧的恰当方式的好时机。如果孩子们吵吵嚷嚷,或者有人越界了,马上制止他们。)”可知,有时候家庭会议最终会变成争吵,故G选项“At times, a family meeting ends up with an endless argument (有时,家庭会议最终会以无休止的争吵告终)”能承上启下,符合题意。

故填an。

Thank you for listening.
Good morning, everyone. I’m here to share with you a practical way to learn English.
First of all, I immerse myself in the language as much as possible by engaging with English media such as movies, TV shows, podcasts, and music. This method is effective because it exposes me to a variety of accents, colloquialisms, and speaking speeds, which enhances my listening skills and adaptability. Additionally, I practice speaking English aloud and talking to myself about my day or any topic that comes to mind. This practice helps reinforce what I’ve learned and builds confidence in my spoken English. Finally, I make a habit of carrying a notebook with me to set down new words and expressions that I come across, allowing me to review and practice them later.
Thank you for listening.

When I was 13 years old, a boy gave me a gift that changed my life. It was a simple smile.
It was early autumn, my first year of junior high school, and my old school was far away. As a result, I felt like no one knew who I was. I was very lonely and afraid to make friends with anyone. Every time I heard other students talking and laughing, I felt heartbroken. I couldn’t talk to anyone about my problems, and I didn’t want my parents to worry about me.
One day, as my classmates chatted happily with their friends, I sat at my desk, feeling a bit left out as usual. Just then, a boy I didn’t know entered the classroom. He walked past me and then turned around. He looked at me and smiled without any word. Suddenly, I felt a light and friendly touch. It made me feel happy, full of vitality and warmth.
That smile was a turning point for me. I started to talk to that boy named Jack, and gradually, he became my first and best friend in the new school. I found myself relying on him for companionship and comfort, as he was the only one who had shown me kindness.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Jack decided to help me make more friends.

With more friends around me, I smiled a lot and started to spread the warmth.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jack decided to help me make more friends. He introduced me to his classmates during lunch breaks and encouraged me to join group activities. At first, I hesitated, but Jack’s unwavering support gave me courage. Slowly, I began participating in conversations and even shared my thoughts. To my surprise, many classmates responded warmly, and I realized they weren’t as distant as I had imagined. Jack’s kindness not only brought me companionship but also taught me the power of reaching out.
With more friends around me, I smiled a lot and started to spread the warmth. Inspired by Jack’s simple yet profound gesture, I began smiling at others who seemed lonely. One day, a shy girl thanked me for my smile, saying it made her feel welcome. At that moment, I understood how a small act could brighten someone’s day. Just as Jack had lit up my world, I now hoped to pass on that light, one smile at a time.

In the San Diego Zoo there lived Lucas, a four- year- old African penguin (企鹅).
A He couldn’t stand upright. B. He was unable to lie down.
C. His eyesight became poor. D. His sense of smell dropped.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Examples of animal diseases. B. Steps of treating Lucas’ disease.
C. The importance of the zoo’s team. D. The difficulty with Lucas’ treatment.
26. What helped Lucas get a new life?
A. An operation. B. Some medicine.
C. A pair of shoes. D. The penguin group.
27. What did Debbie Denton think of Lucas’ shoes?
A. Useful. B. Expensive. C. Strange. D. Uncomfortable.

China started a plan — Weight Management. It is from June 2024 to June 2027 and helps people focus on health problems.
The plan has two key parts. One part is about having balanced meals. Eat different healthy foods such as fruit and vegetables, and drink some milk. Don’t eat too much fast food because it has lots of salt, fat and sugar. The other part is about doing exercise. Try to do 30 — 60 minutes of sports every day. It can make people strong and healthy. Jogging, swimming and playing basketball are all good choices.
To make the plan more successful, companies, schools, and the government are working together. For example, many companies prepare healthy food for their workers for lunch. And schools in Shanghai are making students exercise for at least two hours every day. They are also giving students less homework and more free time to exercise. What’s more, the government builds sports centers in cities and towns. People can go there to exercise for free.
A fit today means a brighter tomorrow!
28. Weight Management in China is a_________ plan.

24-year-old Canadian volunteer teacher Sophie Morrison arrived in a small African village in 2022 to teach at the local primary school. She quickly grew close to her students, using games and stories to make lessons lively.
On July 22nd — exactly six months into her volunteer work — a sudden storm hit, with thunder crashing nonstop.
