The Internet is often used to buy and sell products, pay bills, and communicate with people. But how safe is it when you use the Internet? Our magazine Interactions asked some Internet users about their experiences.
Linda, 29, nurse: I pay all my bills online. One day, I received an email from my bank. It told me that someone was trying to take out money from my account (账号), so I should email my password (密码) to the “bank manager”. I felt something was wrong, so I called my bank and asked about the email. The bank said they never sent it. I realised that someone tried to cheat (欺骗) me of my money. I’ll continue paying my bills this way, but I’ll be more careful.
Emily, 22, office worker: I was at work, and I sent an email to a friend of mine. I was telling her about my problems with Mark, the manager. A few minutes later, a friend of Mark’s came over to my desk. He said, “So you think Mark is too strict?” My face was red. I chose the wrong name on my address list. It was my own fault, so I’ll look over my emails more carefully before I click “Send” next time.
Thomas, 21, university student: I love the Internet! I look up lots of information online. I often buy things on the websites—furniture, clothes, CDs, even foods. I have also sold some of my things on the Internet. I only use the websites I trust and I’ve never had a safety problem.

Zach Smith, an 18-year-old senior at Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey, had a problem. “I was not happy with my school’s learning system (系统), and so were my friends,” Zach said. “So I thought I could design an app (应用程序) that would bring together your homework and everything you need all in one place to make it easy for students to stay organized.”
That idea of creating My DE+ put Zach on a journey that would find him learning the finer points of UX design, working with coding platforms (编程平台), and importantly, getting the confidence and trust of the teachers at the school.
“I started with Figma, just prototyping (制作原型) what the app would look like. I met with my head teacher at school and showed him the design. He was like, ‘Whoa, that looks very cool! How do we get this in our school?’ And I don’t think he realized it was just a design. So now I had to get to work building the app,” Zach said.
At first, Zach was considering teaching himself how to code. That’s when he discovered Adalo. Zach was able to create a working prototype. The next question was how to get it on the phones of 500 students in the school. Zach used a business platform called Make. And he changed it and sent everyone a message. “I met with every grade at the school and showed them how to get the app. After a month, I had 500 users on the app, which is almost my whole school,” Zach explained.
Zach has now been talking with other heads of technology of schools in New York City and adding all kinds of new functions (功能) like community pages. “In terms of what comes next, I really hope my app can be used in other schools. I just love it when I can see an idea in my head, and follow it through from start to finish.”
1.What made Zach create My DE+?
A.His interest in coding platforms.
B.Advice from the school managers.
C.A UX design class from his computer teacher.
D.Dissatisfaction with the school’s learning system.
2.What impressed Zach’s head teacher?

Last year, I went to the 41st Weifang International Kite Festival with my friend Emma. The sky was full of amazing kites—pandas, cars, dragons and so on. The locals said proudly, “In Weifang, everything can fly in the sky.” People from 46 countries came to join the fun.
While we were there, Emma and I looked up kite history on our phones. I thought Laozi might have invented kites, but I was wrong! It was actually Mozi who invented kites over 2,000 years ago. He made the first wooden kite with wood and silk. It’s said that the kite could fly for one day. Later, Lu Ban improved it with bamboo, making it stay in the air for three days.
Weifang produces over 70% of the world’s kites. An old grandpa told us there are four steps to make a kite: framing (扎框架), gluing, painting, and flying. Each step must be done very carefully. For example, the water temperature should be around 60°C when you glue the paper. Water hotter than that will change the colour of the paper.
What surprised me most was the new ideas in kite-making. People add colourful lights to the kites. At night, the kites shine brightly in the sky. This trip made me love kites even more—they’re not just toys, but a mix of history and creativity!

3.How many steps are there to make a kite?
A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.
4.When gluing the paper, what will happen if the water temperature is much hotter than 60°C?
A.The paper will dry soon. B.The frame will be broken.
C.The colour will be changed. D.The size of the kite will be small.
5.What does the writer think of kites after the trip?
A.They are mainly for kids to play with. B.They show both history and new ideas.
C.They look more beautiful with different colours. D.They are difficult to make with traditional steps.

Once there was a poor country mouse named Pip. He lived in a quiet field under an old apple tree. Every day he ate simple food, such as wild corn, roots and a few berries. He was happy because no one ever bothered him.
One sunny morning, Pip decided to visit his cousin, Max, who lived in the big city. “City life must be exciting!” Pip thought. He packed a small bag and jumped onto a farmer’s truck.
When Pip arrived, he could not believe his eyes. Tall buildings, shining cars and hundreds of mice hurried along the streets. Max welcomed Pip warmly and took him to a beautiful apartment. The kitchen was bigger than Pip’s whole house. There were cakes, cheese, bread and even chocolate. Pip’s mouth watered. “You eat like a king!” he cried.
“Shhh,” whispered Max. “Speak softly. A huge cat lives here. She waits behind the door every night.” Just then, they heard a soft “Meow”. “Run!” Max turned pale and shouted.
The two mice raced through holes, up ropes and down pipes. The cat’s claws almost caught Pip’s tail. At last, they escaped into a dark corner, breathing hard.

Billy spent each day on the streets, begging for money to buy food. Every day, as he started thinking about his life, he sometimes heard the sound of a coin or two dropping into his cup. One day, the noise was louder than usual. When he looked into the cup, he could hardly believe what he saw. At the bottom was a shining diamond (钻) ring.
Billy’s first thought was to go straight to a jeweler’s and that was exactly what he did. He was offered $4,000! Billy thought long and hard. Was this a mistake? It was more money than he’d seen in a long time. But then he thought about his grandfather, who had always taught him to do the right thing, so he knew he had to reconsider. His mind was firm (坚定的). He’d keep the ring and maybe one day its owner would return.
Two days later, a young woman came to him and asked if he’d found anything unusual in his cup. Billy reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. When he saw the smile on the woman’s face, he knew he’d made the right decision. She explained that when she dropped the coins into his cup, she’d forgotten to put it in her purse.

People often say that the Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal to him. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them individual; they can paint them, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a very small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of the individual.
People usually like to mark their space. Are you sitting now in your home or on a train? Have you marked the space around yourself as yours? If you are on the train you may put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you. If you share a flat you may have one corner or chair which is your own.
Once I was travelling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was angry. Maybe he thought that he owned the whole table. I had read a book about non-verbal communication, so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his briefcase! When I did this he stiffened and his eyes nearly popped (瞪出) out of his head. I had invaded (侵犯) his space! A few minutes later, I took my papers off his case in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table. Of course, it is possible that he just wanted to be helpful to me!
If you are visiting another country, you may feel that you don’t have any private space. Hotel rooms look much the same in every country in the world. All day long, you share public spaces with other people. You see the local people in their private spaces and you feel lonely and “outside”. Local people can create their private spaces by talking about things you don’t know about. And you even feel that they like you to be outside them so that they will enjoy being inside even more! This is one of the difficulties of being a traveler! But if you understand it then it helps you. Haven’t you enjoyed being part of a group and “owning” a bit of space?

Today, as I was shopping at Woolworths with my parents, a kind person surprised me with some beautiful flowers.
Three years ago, I often ordered meals online because my parents were always on business. Before payment, I would leave a few words for the person who packed orders (打包订单), words like “Hope you’re having a good day!” or “Thank you for your hard work.”
Fast forward to today, I found myself facetoface with one of the people who had packed my orders in the past. I walked up to her and said, “Thank you so much for what you did! You are fantastic!” She paused (暂停) for a second and then asked my name. When I told her, she said, “Oh, you are the girl who wrote notes for us!” She told me that those little notes truly made their days nice. It was heartwarming to hear that such small acts of kindness could make such a big difference.

Linda, 29, nurse: I pay all my bills online. One day, I received an email from my bank. It told me that someone was trying to take out money from my account (账号), so I should email my password (密码) to the “bank manager”.

1.Who first invented the earliest kite according to the passage?
A.Laozi. B.Lu Ban. C.Mozi. D.Zhuangzi.
2.Which of the following did Lu Ban use to improve kites?
A.Wood. B.Silk. C.Paper. D.Bamboo.
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.B 4.C 5.B

Pip’s heart was still beating fast. “Thank you, Max, but I miss my quiet field. I’d rather share one safe corn seed than a hundred cheeses with a cat.”

When he saw the smile on the woman’s face, he knew he’d made the right decision. She explained that when she dropped the coins into his cup, she’d forgotten to put it in her purse.
But it didn’t end there. The woman and her husband posted the story on the Internet. They also raised money for Billy online. They raised more than $185,000.

1.The writer was angry as he was travelling on a train to London because ________.
A.he had no place to sit
