【中考真题】
In a little town, there was a clock tower that had stood for centuries. The clock tower was known for its perfect timekeeping, and was looked after by Mr. Pendulum, the town’s timekeeper.
One day, Mr. Pendulum decided to take on an apprentice (学徒). He chose a young boy named Oliver who had always been attracted by the clock tower. Oliver was excited but also nervous, knowing that keeping time was a responsibility (责任) of great importance. Mr. Pendulum taught Oliver everything he knew about the clock.
As Oliver worked alongside Mr. Pendulum, he learned that time was not just about numbers and minutes—it was about moments and memories. The clock tower had a special characteristic: It could show little bits of the past and future. Mr. Pendulum showed Oliver how to use this characteristic to help people in need.
One day, a young woman named Emily came to the clock tower for help. She was feeling lost and uncertain of her future. Mr. Pendulum and Oliver let her see a piece of her past, where she had faced challenges but had also experienced moments of joy and growth. They then showed her a possible future, where she could achieve her dreams and find happiness. Emily was moved by the experience and left the clock tower with renewed hope. Oliver realized that the true power of the clock tower was not in keeping time, but in helping people find their way. He also learned that time was not something to be controlled, but something to be treasured.

I was travelling on a British ship from India to London in 1905. Among all the passengers, no one would fail to notice Padishah, an Indian businessman. From the moment he got on the ship, he kept showing off the diamond on his turban. The big diamond successfully attracted attention, including that of the five ostriches on the deck.
One morning, as Padishah passed by the ostriches, one swallowed his diamond suddenly. The bird ran around and mixed itself with the others in no time.
“Whose are these stupid ostriches? I want my diamond back!” Padishah shouted angrily. People began to crowd on the deck. I was among the first to arrive. I didn’t feel half sorry for the man as he was asking everyone what to do for the diamond’s return.
Word swept across the ship about the accident, reaching a man named Potter. After lunch in the hall, Potter went to Padishah and claimed, “I’ve contacted the ostriches’ owner in London. He accepted my offer for all five and now I am the owner. I have the right to keep the birds and the diamond inside.” I thought Potter was rather smart and regretted deeply at a lost chance.
Padishah was so upset and blurted, “There’s no way you can get my diamond,” he continued as he got calmer. “I can offer you 100 pounds for the birds.” Potter simply refused and left.
After a while, Potter came back to the hall with a sly smile. He announced that he wanted to sell four birds separately to separate people by auction (拍卖). The starting price was 80 for a bird. One of them, he would keep for himself.
Before the crowd realized what was happening, a diamond businessman got one bird for 100 pounds. The prices for the following birds rose higher and higher. After the fourth being sold, Padishah got half mad, not knowing what to do. Potter seemed suddenly sorry and said, “I should have kept them all. But...Trust me! The last bird must be the one.”
I stared at the last bird for quite a while and asked Potter for a private conversation. After a long talk, I finally got the bird for 700 pounds. ▲
The next morning, I was waiting in line to get off the ship, picturing the amazing future life in mind. Then, I saw Padishah and Potter walk arm in arm on the shore, just like old friends. At that moment, I learnt a lesson worth a diamond.

Ryan and Ahmed sat on their bicycles at the start of the cyclocross course. Ahmed had been competing in cyclocross for three years, but this was Ryan’s first race. He wished he could remember everything Ahmed had taught him.
Ryan reviewed the last six months in his mind. From the moment, Ahmed had first asked whether he would like to try the sport, Ryan had been excited. Ahmed helped Ryan find safety gear. He also explained the importance of practising and set up a plan for the two friends to practise together.
Practising was hard. Ryan soon grew bored with working on the same skills over and over. He was ready to race! Ryan ended up skipping (不参加) many of the practices. When Ryan did go to practices, he spent more time doing tricks with his bike than he did listening to Ahmed’s tips.
“Now the real fun begins,” Ryan thought as he sat at the starting line.
“You need to get serious,” Ahmed warned. “Cyclocross can be dangerous.”
Bang! The starting gun went off. The boys rushed off the starting line. Ryan saw the first obstacle (障碍) ahead. It was a series of small hurdles.
“Here I go!” Ryan shouted when he reached the hurdles. He jumped off his bike and landed hard on his foot. Next, he had to get his bike onto his shoulder. Ryan could not remember what Ahmed said about shouldering the bike. He tried to pick it up by the wheels but dropped. Finally, he got his bike off the ground. As he ran, he tried to balance the bike on his shoulder. The bike was heavy, and his ankle hurt. Before he knew it, he was lying face-down in the mud.
“Are you okay?” Ryan heard his friend ask. Ahmed reached down to help Ryan. Ryan was thankful that Ahmed cared more about him than about the race. He caught Ahmed’s hand and stood.

Jordan had his eye on a scoring record. Jordan took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. Maybe today I’ll make history, he thought.
The city’s youth basketball league was holding a celebration. Today’s championship game marked 50 years since the league’s first title game (冠军争夺赛).
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers.
Jordan stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. “Devin, look!” he said to his friend, “You see who has the all-time record? My dad! Twenty-four points. But he never told me that.”
“Twenty-four points,” Devin said. “That’s great.”
Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’s top scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them.
His dad laughed. “I had quite a game that day,” he said. “But look at the score. I prefer to trade all my points for a win.”
Jordan hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost by one point.
“That was a great group of teammates,” Dad said. “I’m still friends with a lot of them.”
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands with his teammate Tara and then started to warm up. The courts filled up quickly.
Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan had led his team to a victory over the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that?
Jordan grew even more confident when he hit the first 2 shots (投篮).
The Lions called a break. Jordan ran to the bench and jumped up and down with excitement.
“Great start,” Coach said. “But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us.”
He was right. By half time, the Lions had pulled ahead, 27-24.
Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, “Great work!”
But Jordan didn’t feel quite as confident as he had before.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, with neither building a lead.
Eleven seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS 51. BADGERS 51.
Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. “Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re open,” he said.
Jordan glanced at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other.
“Me?” Jordan mouthed.
Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another basket would break the record. And it was the right time to do it!
Jordan ran right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket.
The viewers started counting the seconds. “Four... three... two.”
Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin—wide open near the basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
“Yes!” Jordan shouted. After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. “You still have the record,” he told his dad.
Dad smiled. “You have something more important. A championship. And great teammates. Congratulations on your history!”

“Click, click, click...” The drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai’s classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming. When the music ended, there was an awkward (尴尬的) silence. They all looked at the teachers.
Mr Li asked, “What were you trying to express?”
Kai murmured, “I wanted to do something different...to modernize the guqin’s sound.”
“Well, it’s a good try. But you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don’t think you’ve presented the characteristics well,” said Mr Li. “The music was...We could hardly hear the guqin,” added Miss Zhou. “I’m afraid I can’t give you high marks.”
“Please, can I have another chance?” begged Kai.
They finally agreed.
Alone in the hall later, Kai sat in his chair, feeling a little sad. “I understand what you were trying to do,” Kai looked up and saw Miss Zhou by his side. “But before you can break the rules, you have to master them.”
Kai was puzzled. What did she mean?
“The guqin is connected to nature. The bottom board represents the ground, and the rounded top board represents the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony (和谐) between people and nature.”
“Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments?”
“Because it is so quiet,” replied Miss Zhou, “it’s usually played alone. Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. Every note matters. And you know, there’s Chinese philosophy (哲理) behind every form of art. That’s what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and connect them with modern life.”
“Is it true that Confucius played the guqin?”
“Exactly. Confucius believed that music was necessary for a well-rounded education. It could help a person develop his inner self.”
“Can I make it modern?” Kai was wondering if he had asked a stupid question.
“Ancient musicians followed traditions to show respect. To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value. How will you change your piece?”
“I’m not sure yet,” said Kai. “But I’m going to do something different again.”
That night, Kai kept thinking about the next show. “How can I present the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a modern touch?” he wondered.

All I had to do for the two dollars was to clean her house for a few hours after school. It was a beautiful house, too, with a plastic-covered sofa and chairs, wall-to-wall blue-and-white carpeting, a white stove, a washing machine and a dryer—things that were common in her neighborhood, absent in mine. In the middle of the Second World War, she had butter, sugar and steaks.
Part of my pride in working for her was earning money I could spend freely: on movies, candy, ice-cream…But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant some of my earnings were used for real things—an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman. The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was great. I had a status (地位) that doing housework at home did not provide—and it earned me a slow smile, an approving nod from an adult. Confirmation that I was adult-like, not childlike.
Little by little, I got better at cleaning her house—good enough to be given more to do, much more for a little girl. I was ordered to carry bookcases upstairs and, once, to move a piano from one side of a room to the other. I wanted to refuse, or at least to complain, but I was afraid she would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me, as well as the status I had at home.
Then one day, alone in the kitchen with my father, I let drop a few complaints about the job. I gave him details, examples of what troubled me, yet although he listened carefully, I saw no sympathy in his eyes. Perhaps he understood that what I wanted was a solution to the job, not an escape from it. In any case, he put down his cup of coffee and said, “Listen. You don’t live there. You live here. You make the job. It doesn’t make you.”
I have worked for all sorts of people since then, geniuses and morons (笨蛋), quick-witted and dull, big-hearted and narrow. I’ve had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father, I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home.

As far back as the Shang Dynasty, people wore carved masks made of bone and shells. They shouted “nuo, nuo” in a loud voice to scare away evil spirits. Though a lot has changed since then, a special class in a middle school in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, is taught where students can learn how to recreate these Nuo masks.
They draw outlines on a pumpkin or melon, then carefully carve out the eyes, nose and mouth. “These exercises are important for anyone who wants to be a Nuo mask maker,” said their teacher, 59-year-old Peng Guolong, who is one of the first—generation inheritors of Nuo mask carving to keep this tradition alive.
Peng said, “Nuo is our traditional culture in Pingxiang. When we were young, we danced the Nuo dance. But it’s hard to pass it on.”
The good news is that Nuo masks, known for their intricate (复杂的) designs, are gradually gaining popularity in the market. “These days, they aren’t often used in rituals (仪式), but many people buy Nuo masks to display at home as art. I’ve got a lot of them in my house, too,” Peng said.
“I first discovered painting when I was 8. By the time I was 13, my father had taught me the arts of oil painting, Nuo mask carving and embroidery (刺绣),” he said.
When he was 25, he worked in a company in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, as a painter and designer. In 1996, Peng returned to his hometown to set up a Nuo mask carving factory.
At the 2010 Poyang Lake Ecological (生态的) Festival held in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi, Peng’s Nuo masks were a huge success, selling out immediately, and even the masks he created on the spot were pre-ordered by customers.

In the centre of the busy city, where skyscrapers kissed the clouds and people hurried about, there was a small park. It was an oasis of peace in the concrete jungle, a place where I, a high school boy, often went to after school.
One sunny afternoon, as I sat on a bench, my attention was drawn to a street performer preparing his act. He was a middle-aged man with a warm smile and eyes that sparked with determination mixed with life’s wisdom. Placing his hat on the ground, he began to play the violin, each note filled with sad beauty that seemed to tell tales of his life’s journey.
I observed as the crowd passed by, most too preoccupied (心事重重) with their own thoughts to notice the soulful melodies that surrounded them. Occasionally, a coin would clink into the hat, but for the most part, the performer was overlooked.
Approaching him when he took a break, I asked, “Don’t you ever feel disheartened when people don’t stop to listen?”
He looked at me with a gentle smile and replied, “Disheartened? Yes, there are moments. But I remind myself that my music is a personal expression, not just a performance for others.”
“Is it the money that keeps you going?” I asked, glancing at the collection in his hat.
He smiled, “The money is appreciated, but it’s not the driving force. I play because I’m passionate (有激情的) about music. Every note I create is part of me that I share with the world. Whether anyone listens or not, I stay true to my love for the art.”
His words struck a chord (和音) within me. Here was an individual who, despite the indifference (冷漠) of the world, remained steadfast (坚定的) in his pursuit (追求) of happiness. It was a powerful lesson in endurance (忍耐力) and self-worth.
As the sun set below the horizon, painting the sky orange and pink, he continued his playing. This time, I listened with new ears. The music was no longer just a melody. It was a proof of the strength and spirit of humanity.
When it was finally time for me to head home, I placed a coin in his hat, not only as an act of charity, but as respect for a man who had taught me a valuable life lesson: to pursue (追求) one’s passion fearlessly and regardless of (不管) the audience.

I’ve had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home.

Long ago, Adana lived in a small village in Africa. Everyone in the village had jobs to do, and the villagers depended on one another. When Adana turned ten, her mother called for her.
“Adana, it is time for you to take your place in the village. You shall be the water girl. Each morning, we need you to go down to the spring, fill these buckets (水桶) with water, and bring them back to the village before noon.”
Adana took pride in being given such an important job. She picked up the yoke with the buckets, flung it over her back, and walked to the spring. When she arrived, she took a drink and then filled the buckets with clean, cool water. Adana looked at the sun. It was nearly noon and she knew the villagers were depending on her. She turned to a water girl from a nearby village and asked, “How long will it take to carry this water back to my village?”
The girl thoughtfully replied, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But, if you go fast, it will take you all day.”
Adana listened, and thought about what the girl had told her. She did not believe the girl, and she climbed back up the bank and headed down the path toward her village. Adana started off slowly, but increased her speed with each step. Soon, she was slowly jogging back toward her village. Half way home, she stopped to take a little sip of water. The children wanted to give a proper birthday celebration to Mr. Perks. The poorly paid station worker was always kind to everyone in the village and never accepted rewards. Moreover, he often fixed broken toys for the children. After a discussion, the children decided to ask villagers for more gifts. Hearing their plan, Mother agreed, but warned, “Remember, true kindness shows respect and won’t make the receiver feel embarrassed.”
Then the children went around the village collecting small gifts for Mr. Perks. Each villager remembered his kindness. When they brought the gifts to Mr. Perks’ little house, his wife cried happily, “This will be Perks’ best birthday!”
As Mr. Perks came home, the children quickly hid in the wash-house. Then Bobbie realized a big problem—she forgot to put names on each gift! Now Mr. Perks might think all the gifts were from the children. It seemed that they had spent all money on him to show off their generosity (慷慨), exactly what Mother had warned them not to do.
Soon they heard the voice of Mr. Perks, loud and rather angry. “I won’t accept charity!” Then Mr. Perks found the children in the wash-house. He rushed to the door and pushed it open hard.
“Come out,” said Mr. Perks, “come out and tell me what you mean by it.”
“Oh!” said Phyllis, “I thought you’d be happy.”
“We didn’t mean any harm,” said Peter.
“But you did hurt me,” said Mr. Perks.
“These aren’t just from us,” Peter explained. “The whole village gave them because you’ve helped everyone!”
“Then why shame me before the whole village?” Mr. Perks shouted.
With shaking fingers, Bobbie pulled out the notes they’d prepared. She read them one by one: 1) From Mother: “Only giving some old clothes because Mr. Perks has been so kind; I can’t do much because we’re poor ourselves.” 2) From the Blacksmith: “Made this tool special for a respected man.”3)....
Mrs. Perks cried, “They’re not pity gifts, dear. They’re thanks.”

Bebeto could hear his parents discussing his sister Ana’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of the toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew.
This birthday would be different, though. Ana was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Zulma’s Presents, a neighbourhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he fell asleep.
After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a burlap sack (麻布袋). Then he tied the sack to the handlebars of his bicycle and headed out of the town.
Shortly after, he rode past a group of his friends playing soccer. “Come on over, Bebeto,” they called. “You’re just in time!”
“Sorry, guys. Not today,” he answered.
After a long ride, he reached the mango grove (果园).
There were already two other boys there, standing among some smaller trees and picking fruit from the lower branches. Bebeto set to work right away. Nearly all of the trees held ripe (熟的) mangoes, but they were well beyond reach. He used his pocketknife to cut a long piece of bamboo growing at the edge of the grove. Then he took the tin can from the sack, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of a mature mango tree. He stayed there, poking (戳) the tin can high up into the tree. After a while, his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore (酸痛的). He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his sack was nearly full.
Bebeto reached her store just as Zulma was closing—in time to exchange some of his mangoes for the doll.
The following morning, Ana walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.
“Good morning, birthday girl,” said her mother, pouring her a glass of juice. “I hear your brother has a special surprise for you today.”
Just then, Bebeto came in, carrying a large bowl of mangoes. He placed it on the table before Ana.
“Happy birthday, Sis,” he said.
“My favourite fruit—thank you, Bebeto!” said Ana. She reached for the bowl and picked up the top mango. Then her eyes widened, and her smile beamed even brighter. There, nestled among the fruit, was the new doll.

D.A teenager makes cakes to sell at a market, and then buys a comic book for a friend.
Pinocchio had a fever. The Fairy took a glass of water with medicine and said lovingly to Pinocchio, “Drink this, and you’ll be up and well.” Pinocchio looked at the glass worriedly and said, “I’d rather die than drink that awful medicine.”
At that moment the door of the room flew open and in came four Rabbits as black as ink, carrying a small black coffin (棺材) on their shoulders.
“What do you want?” asked Pinocchio.
“We have come for you,” said the largest Rabbit.
“Oh, Fairy, my Fairy,” the Pinocchio cried out. “Give me that glass! Quick, please! I don’t want to die!” And holding the glass with his two hands he swallowed (吞下) the medicine quickly. Then the rabbits had to leave.
After that, the Fairy added, “Pinocchio, tell me how you were in the hands of the robber last time.”
“I had five gold pieces to give to my Father, but on the way I met two robbers. They tied my neck with a rope and hung me to a tree.” said Pinocchio “Where are the gold pieces now?” the Fairy asked.

Chinese writer Hai Ya’s The Space-Time Painter (《时空画师》) won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) for Best Novelette (最佳短中篇小说) on Oct 21. He became the third Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.
When creating The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya drew his idea from a famous painting, A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). It is by Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Based on Wang, Hai created a painter named Zhao Ximeng. After many hard times, Zhao’s mind leaves his body and enters a space where a modern policeman is trying to solve a case (案件) about an ancient painting.
Hai Ya’s story with science fiction began in his childhood. “When I was a child, the bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’,” Hai Ya told Beijing Youth Daily. He added that science fiction opened a new world for him as a kid.
Hai Ya’s works feature a mix of history and science fiction. These two styles seem opposite: One looks back at the past, and the other faces the future. However, in Hai Ya’s works, they find a perfect balance (平衡).
“If we can only imagine the future and things in space like rockets, it will only limit our imagination,” Hai Ya told Shenzhen Special Zone Daily. “I don’t think history is something completely in the past. It is flowing (流动的), and we can make predictions about the future by looking back at history. History is also part of our future,” he added.
More Chinese writers today are trying to mix traditional culture with modern stories. Hai Ya believes that it is not a choice but a natural process. “Our history and culture have universal values (普世价值) that can touch everyone,” he said to Xinhua.
“Sci-fi is built upon a sense of wonder and estrangement (疏离) from science. Sci-fi writers are trying to attract readers not by relying on (依赖) the wonder of science, but by using different skills and … the potential to reflect (反映) reality.”
1.What do we know about The Space-Time Painter?
A.Its story is based on the faraway future. B.It is a historical novel about the Song Dynasty.
C.It is inspired by an ancient painting. D.It tells Wang Ximeng’s life story.
2.How did sci-fi influence Hai Ya as a child?
A.It enriched his mind. B.It encouraged him to combine history with sci-fi.
C.It taught him a lot about Chinese history. D.It gave him new ways to write novels.
3.Why did Hai Ya combine history with sci-fi?
A.To remind people of the flow of time. B.To encourage readers to learn from history.
C.To compare history with modern life. D.To find a balance between history and reality.
4.What can we learn from the last two paragraph?
A.Chinese values are accepted all over the world. B.The popularity of Chinese sci-fi is growing.
C.More and more Chinese writers are writing sci-fi works. D.Chinese history and culture is drawing writers’ attention.

“Ouch!” Ryan cried. It hurt to put weight on his ankle. “You were right, Ahmed. Cyclocross is about more than strength and speed. Can we spend a few more months training together? I want to finish my next cyclocross race!”

In the middle of the Second World War, she had butter, sugar and steaks.
Part of my pride in working for Her was earning money I could spend freely: on movies, candy, ice-cream... But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant some of my earnings were used for real things—an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman.
I’ve had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home.

【答案】1.B 2.C 3.C 4.B 5.D
【导语】本文记述了作者童年时通过打工补贴家用的经历,以及父亲“工作不定义自我价值”的教诲对其职业生涯的深远影响。
1.推理判断题。根据第一段中“It was a beautiful house, too, with a plastic-covered sofa and chairs, wall-to-wall blue-and-white carpeting, a white stove, a washing machine and a dryer—things that were common in Her neighborhood, absent in mine.”可知,作者详细描述了雇主家优渥的居家环境,并说明了自家环境不如雇主家,是为了强调雇主的生活与自己的生活有所不同。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant some of my earnings were used for real things—an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman.”可知,作者为自己的工作最自豪的原因是,她可以通过打工补贴家用。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Perhaps he understood that what I wanted was a solution to the job, not an escape from it. ”可知,作者向父亲抱怨工作是希望他能帮助自己解决工作中的问题。故选C。
4.推理判断题。第二段的结尾“I had a status that doing housework at home did not provide—and it earned me a slow smile, an approving nod from an adult. Confirmations that I was adult-like, not childlike.”可知,这证明我更像成年人,而不是小孩子,与“孩子需要被认可”的主题直接呼应,形成自然过渡;第三段中的“Little by little, I got better at cleaning Her house—good enough to be given more to do, much more for a little girl. I was ordered to carry bookcases upstairs and, once, to move a piano from one side of a room to the other.”开始描述工作压力,插入此段可先通过时代对比强化“被需要”的深层意义,再引出后续矛盾,逻辑更顺畅。所以本段插入在第二段和第三段之间比较合理。故选B。
5.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中“since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home”可知,从自己的童年经历中,作者明白了“工作不定义自我价值”的道理,与D项表述相符。故选D。
When she did, she saw that the buckets were only half full. Water had been sloshing out along the path as she travelled.
Disheartened, Adana turned back toward the spring. Once again, she filled the buckets with nice, clean water. Then, she walked slowly back toward the village.
When she arrived, her little sister asked, “How long does it take to carry water back from the spring?”
Adana smiled and said, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But if you go fast, it could take all day.” Adana’s little sister listened, but thought this was an odd thing to say. From that day forward, Adana walked quickly to the spring each morning. On her way home, she ________.

D.He didn’t want Ana to be different from other girls in the neighbourhood.

A.He used the tin can to cut the ripe mangoes in the tree.
B.He threw the tin can at the mangoes to make them fall.

D.He tied the tin can to a stick and poked the mangoes with it.

A.In general, Ana preferred fruits to dolls.
B.Bebeto was a caring brother in the family.
C.The family couldn’t afford store-bought gifts.

“In the wood nearby.” At this second lie his nose grew a few more inches.
