B Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday, he had a heart attack. He was lucky — he survived. But something inside him had died. His passion for life was gone. My husband and I asked Dad to live with us on our small farm, hoping the fresh air would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated. One day I read an article about a nursing home. Several depressed patients’ states had greatly improved when they were given dogs. So, I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. As soon as I got there, a pointer’s (指示犬的) eyes caught my attention. He watched me calmly. A staff member said, “He got here two weeks ago and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.” I turned to the man in horror. “You mean you’re going to kill him?” “Ma’am,” he said gently. “We don’t have room for every unclaimed (无人领取的) dog.” The pointer’s calm brown eyes awaited my decision. “I’ll take him,” I said. Glancing at the dog, Dad wrinkled (使起皱纹) his face and turned back towards the house. Then suddenly, the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He sat down in front of Dad. Dad’s anger melted, and soon he was hugging the animal. It was the beginning of a warm friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne. Together they spent long hours walking down dusty lanes and relaxing on the banks of streams. Dad’s bitterness disappeared gradually, and he and Cheyenne went on to make many friends. Then, late one night two years later, I felt Cheyenne’s cold nose searching through my bed covers. He had never come into our bedroom before at night. I ran into my father’s room and found that he had passed away. Two days later, my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed. As I buried him near their favorite stream, I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind. 24. Why did Dad criticize everything the author did? A. He hated living on his daughter’s farm. B. The disease took away his interest in life. C. The state of his illness worsened. D. His daughter couldn’t do things well. 25. What was Dad’s attitude when he first saw the dog? A. Disappointed. B. Unfriendly. C. Excited. D. Satisfied. 26. What was the dog’s greatest help to Dad? A. It went for a walk with him together. B. It helped him to make many friends. C. It brought peace of mind back to him. D. It improved his family relationship. 27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage ? A. A Deserted Dog. B. Dad’s Recovery. C. Friends in the End. D. Dad’s Last Days. C It could happen just about any time you step out in public. You get onto an almost-empty bus, but the next passenger in decides to ignore dozens of empty seats to sit right next to you. While you’re waiting in line at a supermarket, the next customer insists on standing only two inches behind you and shouting into his cell phone. You go into a public restroom, and the next person to enter decides to use the next stall. Behaviors like these don’t just make us feel uncomfortable; we often feel anxious, alarmed; and violated They are an attack on personal space. In any society, shared definitions of personal space control how we interact with other people. People living in densely (密集地) populated cities like Mumbai, Beijing, or Mexico City tend to require less personal space than people living in sparsely (稀少地) populated places within the country. In America, New Yorkers often have smaller requirements than residents of western states, like Montana, Shenandoah and Wyoming. Because everyone has different standards, body movement that is polite in one place can be understood as opposite in another, especially in Britain. As the British etiquette website Debrett puts it, as a British person, somebody standing too close may make you “focus less on what somebody is saying than on how close they are to you”. Simple acts like putting an arm around someone you don’t know may seem friendly in China, but they can make us very uncomfortable. People from many European countries such as France and Spain kiss each other on the cheek when they meet, yet to British person, this seems too friendly and “touch-freely”. The website explains, “The British are not backslappers (过分友好者) and generally do not show affection in public”. Are British people unfriendly? Far from it. The website adds that they are not as “stand-offish and aloof” as they may seem, but very friendly and helpful to foreigners. However, remember not to be too close. If you are going to come closer than an arm’s length, please let them know. 28. If you were meeting a British for the first time, what would be the polite act? A. To kiss him/her on the cheek. B. To keep an arm’s length away from him/her. C. To put an arm around him/her. D. To slap his/her back. 29. According to the passage, in which place do people require more personal space? A. Beijing and Mexico City. B Mumbai and Shenandoah. C. Wyoming and New York. D. Wyoming and Montana. 30. The underlined part “stand-offish and aloof” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ________. A. cold and distant B. polite and cool C. gentlemanly and kind-hearted D. independent and strong-willed 31. What can we conclude from the article? A. British people like to sit next to other people on empty buses. B. British people usually kiss strangers on the cheek to greet them. C. British people are helpful though they may not appear to be. D. British people are delighted to show affection in public. D Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings are wet, they can’t fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop bodies into water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land — like surfers (冲浪者) who create and then ride their own waves. As with many scientific advances — Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt — Dr. Roh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water’s surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water. Dr. Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to limit each bee’s bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get caught on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It’s a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity. The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn’t been recorded in other insects and most semiaquatic (半水生的) insects use their legs for propulsion, which is known as water-walking. It may have evolved (进化) in bees, they predicted. Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees’ surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. “This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can’t send a boat or helicopter,” Dr. Gharib said. 32. What does the author intend to show by mentioning Newton and Franklin? A. Roh’s admiration for them. B. Roh’s chance discovery about bees. C. Their outstanding talent for science. D. Their similar achievements in discovery. 33. What helps bees move forward on water? A The push from the water. B. A special swimming skill. C. Their strong and dry wings. D. The support from the air. 34. Why are possible new robots mentioned at the end of the passage? A. To draw more attention to the research. B. To prove robots are better than boats. C. To criticize current rescue methods. D. To show the study’s practical value. 35. What does the text mainly tell us ? A. The problems of wet wings for insects. B. Insects can use wave power to escape. C. Honeybees’ unique surfing on waves inspires scientists. D. The surf-like movement of honeybees can not last long. Habits to be a highly effective student Some students are able to get straight A’s and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend. Take care of yourself. During final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. I’m honored to talk about my own feelings about living abroad at this monthly meeting of our club. Moving to a new country can be challenging. When I first moved to Shanghai from the US because of a job opportunity, I felt really nervous. I had no relatives or friends here. The company found me a nice place to live. This made the adaptation much smoother. Although I did some research beforehand, in those first few weeks, simple tasks like grocery shopping and using public transportation seemed confusing. I tried to find someone who was also from the US, but it wasn’t easy. I decided the best approach to getting to know the city was to slowly experience it. So on weekends, I would visit some new neighborhoods or parks, chatting with the locals along the way. Though my Chinese was only at a basic level, people were always friendly and patient. Within a month, Shanghai started to feel like home. Looking back, I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. It is still two years before I return to the US, but I value my time in Shanghai very much. I want to say that though change can be hard, sometimes it’s the best way to grow. That’s all. Thanks for your attention. A Keeper for a Day Program Do you love animals and ever find yourself wanting to know what a zookeeper does all day? B 25. B 26. C 27. 根据第一段“Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday, he had a heart attack. He was lucky — he survived. But something inside him had died. His passion for life was gone.(在爸爸67岁生日的第四天,他心脏病发作了。他很幸运,活了下来。但他内心的某些东西已经死了。他对生活的热情已经消失了)”和第二段中“Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated.(他搬进来后不到一个星期,我就后悔当初的邀请了。他批评我所做的一切。我变得很沮丧)”可推知,疾病带走了父亲对生活的热情和兴趣,因此他批评作者所做的一切。故选B项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第七段中“Glancing at the dog, Dad wrinkled (使起皱纹) his face and turned back towards the house.(爸爸看了一眼那只狗,皱了皱脸,然后转身朝房子走去)”可知,父亲看到狗时皱起了脸,转身朝房子走去,这表明他对狗的态度是不友好的。 根据最后一段中“As I buried him near their favorite stream, I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind.(当我把它埋在他们最喜欢的溪流附近时,我默默地感谢这只狗恢复了父亲的平静)”可知,狗对父亲最大的帮助是它给父亲带回了内心的平静。 C It could happen just about any time you step out in public. People living in densely (密集地) populated cities like Mumbai Beijing, or Mexico City tend to require less personal space than people living in sparsely (稀少地) populated places within the country. B. Mumbai and Shenandoah. C British people are helpful though they may not appear to be. D. British people are delighted to show affection in public. B 29. D 30. A 31. 根据最后一段“However, remember not to be too close. If you are going to come closer than an arm’s length, please let them know.(但是,记住不要太近。如果你要走近他们,请让他们知道。)”可知,如果你第一次和英国人见面,礼貌的做法是与他/她保持一臂的距离。故选B。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“People living in densely (密集地) populated cities like Mumbai, Beijing, or Mexico City tend to require less personal space than people living in sparsely (稀少地) populated places within the country. In America, New Yorkers often have smaller requirements than residents of western states, like Montana, Shenandoah and Wyoming.(居住在孟买、北京或墨西哥城等人口密集城市的人,所需的个人空间往往比居住在本国人口稀少地区的人要少。在美国,纽约人所需的个人空间通常比蒙大拿州、谢南多厄以及怀俄明州等西部各州的居民要小。)”可知,怀俄明州和蒙大拿州的人需要更多的个人空间。故选D。 【30题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Are British people unfriendly(英国人不友好吗?)”和“but very friendly and helpful to foreigners(但是对外国人非常友好和乐于助人)”可知,英国人不像看起来的那么冷漠和疏远,和cold and distant意思相近。故选A。 根据最后一段“The website adds that they are not as “stand-offish and aloof” as they may seem, but very friendly and helpful to foreigners.(该网站补充说,他们并不像看起来那么“冷漠和疏远”,而是对外国人非常友好和乐于助人。)” C。 D Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings are wet, they can’t fly, either. A. The push from the water. B 33. A 34. D 35. 根据第二段中“As with many scientific advances — Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt — Dr. Roh’s experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech’s Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water’s surface producing waves.(就像许多科学进步一样——艾萨克·牛顿的苹果或本杰明·富兰克林的闪电——Roh博士的实验始于一次散步。2016年,他路过加州理工学院的米利坎池塘时,观察到一只蜜蜂在水面上产生了波浪)”可知,作者提到牛顿和富兰克林是想类比Roh博士偶然发现蜜蜂在水面上的行为。故选B项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Bees get caught on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down.(蜜蜂之所以能停留在水面,是因为水的重量约为空气的三倍。这种重量差在蜜蜂翅膀高速上下振动时产生推进力)”可知,水的推力帮助蜜蜂在水面上前进。故选A项。 Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees’ surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea.(Roh博士和Gharib博士设想了许多蜜蜂“冲浪”的实际应用。其中一个计划是利用他们的观察结果来设计能够在天空和海洋中旅行的机器人)”可知,文章最后提到可能的新机器人是为了展示这项研究的实际应用价值。故选D项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop bodies into water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land — like surfers (冲浪者) who create and then ride their own waves.(但是加州理工学院的Chris Roh和其他研究人员发现,当蜜蜂掉进水里时,它们可以用翅膀产生小波浪,然后像冲浪者一样滑向陆地——冲浪者创造并驾驭自己的波浪)”可知,文章主要介绍了加州理工学院的Chris Roh和其他研究人员发现蜜蜂在水面上可以通过翅膀产生波浪并滑向陆地,这种独特的“冲浪”行为激发了科学家的灵感。 Habits to be a highly effective student Some students are able to get straight A’s and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. However, some students struggle to keep their GPA (Grade-Point Average) above a 3.0. ___36___ Although it’s true that everyone’s IQ is different, good study habits are very important. Here’re several habits you should adopt to get good grades. ___37___ If you haven’t had a planner (规划薄), get one. Many people use their computers and smartphones to make a schedule. The problem with that approach is that they are major distractions. Instead, get an old-fashioned paper and pen planner. Create a weekly schedule. ___38___ Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work. That way you know exactly how much you can accomplish each day. Take frequent, short breaks. Taking a break from studying for 15 minutes every hour will help keep you refreshed. ___39___ If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend. Take care of yourself. During final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and have regular meals. Studying while hungry or sleepy is ineffective and will slow you down in the long run. Also try to make time for friends and family. ___40___ A. Keep things organized. B. Keep away from your computers. C. Of course, not everyone needs breaks. D. Our brains are not meant to work for hours nonstop. E. Having a good support system will help with all the stress. F. And they seem to spend all of their time in studying. G. Then under each day, make a list of things to do each hour. F 37. A 38. G 39. D 40. 【36题详解】 空前“However, some students struggle to keep their GPA (Grade-Point Average) above a 3.0. (然而,有些学生努力保持他们的GPA(平均绩点)在3.0以上。)”说明有的学生需要很努力学习,F选项“And they seem to spend all of their time in studying. (他们似乎把所有的时间都花在了学习上。)”说明了这些学生花很多时间学习,和前文努力学习相一致,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选F。 【37题详解】 空格处是本段主题句,由下文“If you haven’t had a planner (规划薄), get one. (如果你还没有规划薄,那就找一个。)”可知,在本段作者想要强调规划的重要性,A项“Keep things organized. (保持井井有条。)”也是在强调规划,因此概括本段内容,可作为主题句。故选A。 【38题详解】 上文“Create a weekly schedule. (创建每周计划。)”是第二条建议,也就是创建一周的时间表。G项“Then under each day, make a list of things to do each hour. (然后在每一天下面,列出每小时要做的事情。)”承接上文,在周计划之下,列好一周中的每天每个小时要做的事情,也开启下文“Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to school work. (包括吃饭、睡觉和做任何与学习无关的事情的时间。)”具体细化到每个件事的时间安排。故选G。 【39题详解】 根据上文“Take frequent, short breaks.
