“This cookie is not fresh” she shouted, putting a half-eaten cookie down heavily in front of me. “I want you to give my money back right now!”

She didn’t just take the cookie and leave. She stayed, finished her coffee, and before she left, she came back to the counter and said, “You know, that was actually very nice of you. Thank you, young lady.”
At that moment, I learned a powerful lesson about solving problems. The problem wasn’t really the cookie. The problem was that the customer felt she was not heard and disrespected. By choosing not to argue, I 6 the situation by making the customer less angry. By listening and offering a simple and kind solution, I didn’t just solve her problem—I turned a negative experience into a positive one.
That cookie didn’t just teach me about customer service; it taught me a life skill. You can’t control how other people 7 , but you can always control how you react. Two months ago, I was breathing heavily in my first high-level gym class. I wasn’t sure if I could finish the one-hour class. In the room, I seemed to be the only one who was suffering from this class. Everyone else wore tight sports clothes and didn’t look tired at all—they seemed to fit in here. But me? With messy hair and big, loose clothes, I 1 why I even came.
Early last year, I decided to give fitness a real shot. All my life, exercise had made me feel bad. At school, gym class was always a problem for me. Every time we had the gym class, I felt like a 2 person in the room—like I didn’t belong.
Then one Sunday morning, I 3 went to my university’s gym for a spin class (动感单车课程). I thought about canceling so many times, but I told myself: just going to the class was all that 4 .

Soon, the spin class became my favorite time of the week.
The more I rode the bike, the more I realized how strong my body was. I’d never felt so proud of what my body could be strong.
After nine months of spin classes, I wanted to 7 myself again. That’s how I ended up in that high-level gym class. Spin classes helped me get used to moving my body, but this new class taught me I needed to work hard to get fitter.

Last month, our school held the yearly club recruitment fair, a day I’d been waiting for anxiously since middle school. My notebook was filled with notes about the drama club: their spring play The Little Prince, including the actors’ connection with the audience, even the warm stage lights. I’d dreamed of joining for years, but there I stood, feet glued to the ground, with the audition (试镜) form shaking in my sweaty hand. The thought of speaking in front of strangers made my heart race, and I could hardly hold the form firmly because my hands were wet. Suddenly a clear voice called my name. When I heard it, my hands shook a little and I nearly 1 the form.
The drama club booth was full of people and it felt busy. Posters of past plays lined the table, and a lot of well-worn scripts (剧本) sat beside a half-empty box of “Drama Club Family” stickers. Mia, the club president who’d played the lead in The Little Prince, was busy helping nervous applicants (应试者) practice their lines. Her easy confidence only increased my anxiety, and I stepped forward little by little. Then I suddenly felt really scared, so I quickly 2 into the crowd, hoping to fit in with onlookers. But she’d already found me. “You’ve stayed here since the fair started!” she said, waving me over. My throat tightened as I moved forward. She handed me a thin script. “Just two lines. Give it a try.” I nodded, but when I opened my mouth, my voice came out 3 . Soft giggles from the side made my face burn. “I can’t,” I replied softly. “I am afraid that I’ll only 4 the team down. I freeze up in front of people.”
Mia pulled out an old script from her bag. Its cover was worn, with pencil notes like “Slow down and build up the surprise here!” “This is mine from the first year,” she said. “I forgot three lines opening night, froze mid-stage, then ran off. The club waited while I tried to 5 up the courage to come back.” She sat beside me and said, “Read this like we’re talking alone.” We practiced five times, her guidance controlling my voice.
When I finished, she grinned and said, “You’ve got so much 6 , so there is no need to hold yourself back.” The next day, I arrived early. A new student stayed nearby, holding his form like a lifeline, exactly as I’d looked. I walked over, handing him Mia’s old script. “Start with this,” I said. “This is how I found my 7 .” He nodded and began reading.
A week later, I watched him deliver lines calmly. Mia caught my eye and winked—a gesture I’d seen our drama teacher give her last year. Suddenly, it hit me that courage isn’t just found within, but it’s passed on. In that moment, I knew I’d found a place where that courage could keep 8 . It was built by one nervous smile and one well-loved script at a time.

Before my trip to the mountains, I used to be a homebody. I felt completely 1 spending weeks or even months—in my hometown or sometimes even on my block—without going anywhere. I could be quite satisfied by watching The Discovery and National Geographic Channels.
The situation 2 when one day David, my best friend, rushed into my room and talked me into joining him on his journey to the Rocky Mountains. We set off five days later.
This was my first time in the mountains. 3 , the weather was foggy most of the time, and the higher we got into the mountains, the less clearly we could see. On the first day, we were making our way along the foothills; but the next day, we started to climb one of the peaks. 4 the path was rough and steep, I still pushed myself to go faster and ended up 5 long before we got to the top.
When we finally got there, nothing had really changed. The same fog was nearly covering everything. I felt so disappointed, because I had, during the whole course of climbing, 6 to see the view from above and perhaps to be able to take some photos. We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back, when the wind suddenly 7 the fog, and the valley below unfolded in front of us. The place we were standing on was brightened with the sun. I saw a fantastic panorama (全景图) in front of me, and for some moments I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was so amazing that I realized I couldn’t help looking forward to the next trip to the mountains.

When I was sixteen, I got my first job at a local bakery. I was so excited and eager to do everything perfectly. One busy Saturday afternoon, a customer walked up to the counter (柜台), her face red with anger.
“This cookie is not fresh” she shouted, putting a half-eaten cookie down heavily in front of me. “I want you to give my money back right now!”
My heart started pounding. I felt attacked and my first thought was to get defensive (防御的). “It’s not bad,” I thought. “We bake everything fresh every morning!” I was about to say exactly that when I remembered my manager’s 1 : “The customer isn’t always right, but they always need to be heard.”
I took a deep breath—a small but important act to calm myself down. Instead of firing back, I made a choice for my personal growth. I looked at her and said, as 2 as I could, “I’m so sorry you’re disappointed. Let me get you a fresh one from what we just cooled.”
I went to the back and 3 the biggest and softest chocolate chip cookie I could find. Then I 4 it on a little plate, and brought it to her. “Here you go, on the house. I really hope you like this one.”

It was half past six on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone went to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled.
Maybe he was not ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and thick brown hair, he had the looks that 1 girls’ eye.
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms and chest (胸), he smiled again. His daily exercise worked! However, the smile 2 when his eyes moved from the upper part of his body to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. 3 , he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
The kids at school had a nickname (绰号) for him: Shorty!
Jay didn’t like his nickname at all, but he had to 4 it. He had no choice. One day, Jay fell over during the football training and hurt his leg.
While waiting for the X-ray result, he looked at himself in the mirror again.
“What will the X-ray show? What if my leg is badly hurt? When can I play football again? Will I ever be able to play again?” Questions, 5 questions...
Suddenly, a little smile appeared on his face. “The questions are the answer!”
His smile grew even bigger. He realized his questions were like a(n) 6 , all telling him the same thing: your legs are important! He was beginning to see them 7 ! No longer as the “shorty” people made fun of. No, no. He could run faster than anyone else in the football team. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his 8 .
He felt his face grow warm and he saw it turn red.
“Whatever the X-ray shows, one thing is sure: I’ll never go back to that old way of thinking about my legs!”

When I first tried to stand on the bike pedals (踏板), my legs were 5 . I felt like I didn’t have enough strength to finish. But as I took more classes, my 6 grew. I stopped worrying so much about how I looked. Instead, I could focus on my exercising—like thinking about a problem I had or daydreaming about the future.
All in all, what really matters is 8 —not what you wear or how good you are at exercise.

At the age of eight, I attended my first Kathak (卡塔克舞) class because I didn’t want to feel left out by my friends. My mother was very 1 of my decision. “Give it a try. You might just love it,” she said.
However, four years later, I was sure I 2 Kathak. Maybe it was because of the online classes during the flu seasons, which felt like a waste of time. Maybe it was the seeds of self-doubt that had taken root. Or maybe it was just the one-step chakkar (单步脚尖旋转), which seemed as frightening and 3 as climbing Mount Everest. I wasn’t sure what caused it, but I was struggling to understand why I was still dancing.
Seeing my frustration, my mother tried to help by seeking advice from my friends. For a teenager, that was humiliating (屈辱的), and I held her responsible for my 4 . I spent more time arguing with my mother than practicing Kathak.
Looking back, I realize that if my mother hadn’t insisted, I would have quit long ago, and my life would probably be 5 . However, fate had its own plan. After I reached the ninth grade, I had bigger things to worry about, like my sleep schedule and the science projects. Kathak took a backseat on my list of priorities (优先事项). Too busy to hate anything or anyone, I stopped wasting my breath arguing with my mother. I just got by with each dancing class, and, if I was honest, I kind of appreciated those two hours when there was nothing else on my mind.
Months went by, I didn’t realize how much I had 6 , but suddenly I could do ten one-step chakkars. I started to look forward to dancing. As I danced, the sound of each drumbeat resonated (共振) deeply within me. My body moved naturally to the melody, and the jingle of bells chased away my anxious thoughts. I felt peaceful. I found myself 7 every second of it.
Reflecting on the journey that has brought me this far, I realize that passion isn’t always love at first sight. Sometimes, it grows slowly. Thanks to my mother’s support and belief in me, I have discovered my true 8 . I was just too stubborn to see it at first. For me, Kathak is not just about dancing; it’s about self-discovery and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.

My family had never done anything different before. So when Aunt Jenny invited us to her yearly spring farm 1 , I was really excited. I decided to make the day special, so I baked cupcakes for the party and decorated them to look like soft sheep by using some candies.
Soon, my sister Ann and my brother Tex 2 me. They added so many candies that their cupcakes looked more like strange animals than my sheep.
“Time to go now,” Dad announced (宣布).
But things didn’t go 3 as usual. First, Tex couldn’t find his shoes. Then Mom realized she’d left her wallet at home. Halfway to Aunt Jenny’s, Ann suddenly needed a bathroom. We had to take a long way to find one. Dad then 4 a new back road, but it only led us farther away. As we were in the middle of nowhere, our car started making a strange noise and stopped.
“Help won’t come for at least an hour,” Mom said, sounding 5 .
“Now we’ll 6 the whole party!” Tex complained.
Dad smiled and pointed to a field full of colorful flowers. “Why not have our own picnic here?” At first, we weren’t excited about it, but as we spread out the blanket and started eating, something amazing happened.
A huge butterfly gently landed on Ann’s knee. Nearby, two small rabbits jumped across the grass, happily eating. Suddenly, we heard a loud rustling (沙沙声), and hundreds of birds shot up from the trees, flying into the sky in huge circles above us.
“Wow!” I cried. “It’s a 7 !”
“Migration (迁徙) season,” Dad said. “These birds travel through California every spring—millions of them!”
We never made it to Aunt Jenny’s farm, but that didn’t matter. Sitting in that field, enjoying my cupcakes under the open sky, I understood something important that when things don’t work out, disappointments may 8 unexpected surprises. Keep your eyes open, and you might find joy right under your nose!

At four o’clock, Polly left work and stepped out into the fog (大雾). She wondered if the buses would still be running. Once out in the street, she walked quickly towards her usual bus stop.

A Faithful (忠诚的) Father
My husband kissed the baby’s cheek, and hugged me goodbye, then rushed out of the door, into his busy day.
I stayed seated, thinking, with the baby in my arms. The thoughts ran into memories of the mornings with my husband rushing out of the door to meet the responsibility of life. It was only a small jump to thoughts of my own 1 .
My father 2 me up alone. As I looked 3 I could see how much of the family man my dad was. He went to work every morning and returned home every evening. He provided food, clothing, warmth, and protection. He was a faithful father.
Setting the baby down, I telephoned my father. I had just 4 the importance of my father in the daily life going on around us, and that it needed to be recognized.
“Hi, Dad.” I said, 5 back tears.
“Hey, Bud. How are you?” worry was in his 6 .
“Fine, I’m just calling to say…thank you.” I got it out before I cried.
“What for?”
“For getting up and going to work every morning of my life. Now that I have my own child and I see my husband doing the same, I just want to thank you for being faithful.”
There was silence for a moment, and with a small tremble (颤抖) in his voice, he said, “You’re welcome, Bud.”

One lunch break, I was working on my robot programming when suddenly it fell off the desk and broke into pieces. Just then, two boys passed by. “Oh, a GIRL programmer!” One sneered (讥讽). “More like a girl breaker,” the other laughed. More 1 words followed and left my heart burning with anger.
Then Gab walked over asking me to watch his football final after school. “Not interested in your boys’ stuff!” I refused, 2 the pieces into my bag. But Gab kept asking, “Please come. I need you to be there.” Something in his voice 3 a yes from me.
