Mary’s uncle Ted was an engineer. He told her great stories about the rockets he helped design, and he often brought Mary science books. He also taught her some knowledge about space. Mary loved technology and science, and she was also adventurous (爱冒险的). For those reasons, Mary’s family kept telling her she should be an astronaut when she grew up, but she just wasn’t sure.
One Saturday, Mary and Uncle Ted went to visit the Science Museum. They watched a show on space travel. Uncle Ted told her something interesting about spaceships and space suits. But she was most interested in two model robot arms and tried operating (操作) them. She stayed there all day and felt very excited.
By the time they got on the bus to return home, Mary was very tired. Closing her eyes, she was thinking about what it would be like to fly into space. As she nearly fell asleep, Mary started to feel the weightlessness that astronauts must feel when they are in zero gravity (重力). The next thing she knew, she was looking out the window not of a bus but of a spaceship. Mary was operating a huge robot arm outside the spaceship. She felt nervous. But she kept at it. Soon she succeeded. She felt proud of herself.
Just then, Mary heard Uncle Ted’s voice. “Wake up, my dear! We’re back home now.” When she opened her eyes, she realized she had been dreaming, but she knew this for sure—she wanted to be an astronaut one day and couldn’t wait for her first trip into space.

Why is the sea salty? Long before we discovered scientific ways of thinking about it, we explained it in a story. Even though the answer isn’t scientific, it holds some other truth in it — especially about the human nature.
Long ago, a poor old couple lived on the coast. One day, an old storyteller came to their village. The old couple gave him a meal. In return, he gave them a coffee mill (磨粉机) and said, “Say, ‘Mill, please grind (磨粉) ’, and it’ll make whatever you want, to stop it, say ‘Mill, please cease (停止) grinding’.”
Soon the old couple had a much better life. They’d been happy people, and they didn’t need much more. But the young couple next door were never satisfied. When they saw the old couple wearing good clothes and buying good food, they burnt with envy (羡慕) . So one day, the young husband went to the old couple’s house secretly and heard, “Mill, please grind hot chocolate!” He was surprised to see it coming out.
Then the young couple stole the mill from the old couple. With it, they rode a horse and set off down the coast, where no one would know them. Along the way, the husband showed proudly and asked, “What do you want it to make?” “Oh. I don’t know. Why not salt?” the wife said. “Mill, please grind salt!” he said. “It works!” the wife shouted. But then they noticed the salt went everywhere. “Make it stop,” the wife said. But the husband didn’t know how. “Mill, please stop grinding! Please, no more!” His words didn’t work. Recently, I attended the anniversary celebration of Confucius’ birth in Quzhou, Zhejiang. This event, which holds deep cultural and philosophical value, was an eye-opening experience into the heart of Chinese tradition and the enduring heritage of Confucianism (儒学).
The city is home to the descendants (后代) of Confucius, with the 76th of his descendants taking part in the ancient procession (游行). The city plays a special role in keeping Confucius’ teachings alive, making it the perfect place for such a celebration. As I entered the beautifully protected temples, I was surprised at the worship with which this ancient person is still celebrated today.
The air was filled with a sense of respect and ceremony. Many local experts and descendants of Confucius were dressed in traditional Chinese robes, showing the sense of continuity between past and present. A lot of ritual (仪式) performances and prayers were offered, connecting modern society with the ideals Confucius came up with over two thousand years ago.
Beyond the ritual, there were many discussions by Confucian experts on how these ancient teachings are explained in the context of today’s society. I realized that Confucianism isn’t just a relic (遗物) of the past but remains a living philosophy, offering guidance on how to deal with the difficulties of modern life.
What touched me most was how the old traditions connect with modernity in China. While the country is rapidly developing in technology and global influence, it still places great value on its historical roots. The Confucius anniversary celebrations were not just about honoring the past but also about protecting a philosophy that continues to enrich the present.
My time in Quzhou reminded me that ▲ , traditions like Confucianism offer a sense of continuity and grounding. This experience was a deep reminder of the cultural depth of China, and how its people try to protect their rich cultural heritage while getting used to the fast-paced, modern world.

1.Why was the anniversary celebration held in Quzhou?
A.Because Confucius was born there. B.Because Confucius once lived there.
C.Because many people respect Confucius there. D.Because many of Confucius’ descendants live there.
2.Which question can help readers know the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.How did Confucius come up with his ideas? B.What did they do to celebrate the anniversary?
C.Who took part in the anniversary celebration? D.When did the anniversary celebration take place?
3.According to Paragraph 4, the writer agrees that Confucianism is ________.
A.helpful but difficult B.ancient but helpful C.ordinary and ancient D.living and interesting
4.Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A.while change is certain B.unless the celebration is held
C.if we follow Confucius’ ideas D.although Confucianism is meaningful
5.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce his journey into tradition. B.To share some information about Quzhou.
C.To show the development of Chinese culture. D.To advise people to follow ancient teachings.

The Johnson family lives in Beijing. They love traveling. Though they usually plan carefully, unexpected things still happen. Last summer, while flying from Vancouver to Beijing, they experienced an unforgettable journey.
After passing through different security (安检) lines, the family cheerfully headed to their gate, discussing their first hotpot meal back home. Sitting down in the waiting area, Mrs. Johnson said, “Let’s get our jackets-the flight will be freezing!” She suddenly remembered their red suitcase. But when they looked around, the suitcase was gone.
For a moment, they froze. Then, they started laughing. “We left it at security checkpoint! ” cried 12-year-old Tom. Rushing back, they found the airport workers smiling. After thanking them, they took the suitcase and hurried off, because their names were being called over the loudspeaker.
On the plane, Mr. Johnson joked, “We should thank Mom! If we’d lost the suitcase, we’d just collect it next trip!” The family laughed again, turning worry into joy.
Some called the Johnsons “careless”, but their relaxed attitude (态度) prevented blame (责备). Tom recalled learning chess with his dad years ago. Instead of complicated (复杂的) rules, his father taught him to stay calm. “If you keep worrying about doing everything perfectly, ” Dad had said, “one mistake will make you feel terrible. It’s OK to lose a game, but never let yourself give up.”

On March 21, 2025, a 10-year-old boy from Chiling Village, Lingshui, Hainan, went fishing alone in a small boat. He didn’t know that this trip would turn into a dangerous experience.
After hours in the warm sun, he fell asleep on his small boat. When he woke up, the sky was dark. Suddenly, the wind changed direction, and strong ocean currents (洋流) pushed his boat far from the coast. The boy tried to row back, but the waves were too powerful. His boat drifted (漂流) farther and farther into the open sea. Remembering survival (生存) tips, he followed ocean currents and used stars as guides.

I am often asked what I miss most about living in China. The answer is food, especially food from Din Tai Fung (DTF). Every Friday, I visited the restaurant while living in Hangzhou a few years ago.
One good thing about DTF is that it’s a global chain (连锁店). Last month, when I flew back home to Los Angeles from Brussels. I went to a local branch (分店) with my parents. My mother’s favorite dish there was the sweet and sour ribs. Ribs aren’t her cup of tea, but she just couldn’t say no to the ones at DTE. My father loved the hot and sour soup. “Now I’ve found my joy of life,” he said with a big smile. We had a really big meal that night, chatting happily over our favorite dishes.
When I was in China, I learnt that Yang Bingyi, a man from Shanxi, opened DTF as a cooking oil shop in Taipei in 1958. But in the 1970s, his business went under. To turn things around, Yang decided to turn half of his shop into a restaurant. Soon the xiaolongbao in that half attracted crowds of hungry customers, making it well known.
Today, the xiaolongbao is still the star of the show at DTE. Everyone has their own way of eating it. I love it too, but the must-eat dish for me is always the spicy shrimp wontons. It’s not my problem, is it? After all, different strokes for different folks.

The mill kept grinding. Finally, the young husband threw the mill into the sea as far as he could.

As I left Quzhou, I carried with me a deeper understanding of Confucius’ lasting importance, not just for China, but for anyone looking for wisdom in a changing world.
1.Why was the anniversary celebration held in Quzhou?

3.According to Paragraph 4, the writer agrees that Confucianism is ________.
A.helpful but difficult B.ancient but helpful C.ordinary and ancient D.living and interesting

To turn things around, Yang decided to turn half of his shop into a restaurant. Soon the xiaolongbao in that half attracted crowds of hungry customers, making it well known.
