With more than 30 years of tireless effort, China finally made history in an international chess competition this year.

Matt and his mum lived in the country next to a huge forest. There were trees and birds everywhere. They went walking in the forest every weekend. They looked for birds, found feathers and picked berries. Matt thought he lived in the best place in the whole world.
But at the start of spring, everything changed. His family moved to the city as his mum found a new job. There was no forest in the neighbourhood, and that made Matt sad.
Mrs. Potter, Matt’s new neighbour, was an old lady who lived alone. One day, Matt saw her carrying a pot into the building. It seemed a bit heavy, so Matt helped carry it to her home.
Once Mrs. Potter opened the door, Matt was amazed at the view in front of him. It was a forest, but it wasn’t like any forest he had seen before. There were many trees—real ones. But each one was in a pot. They were everywhere in the room. Matt felt as if he was in a fairy land.
“I see you like indoor forest,” said Mrs. Potter. “They are beautiful,” said Matt.
“Would you like to take some trees home? Thank you so much for helping me today,” said Mrs. Potter.
“Yes, please!” said Matt, excitedly.
Mrs. Potter gave Matt two potted (盆栽的) trees. She showed him how to care for the trees. Matt kept them on his balcony (阳台).

I took up baking(烘焙) when I was twelve. At that time I was working on my school bakery project with my classmates. I tried a few times, but I wasn’t very successful. My parents advised I learn from my grandmother, who later gave me her recipe (食谱) and instruction as well. After two years’ practice, I was able to make delicious bread. I have come to realize making bread means a lot to me although it takes a long time.
To make bread, others usually use quick-rise yeast (酵母), but I don’t. Every Saturday morning, after mixing proper amount of water with flour, sugar etc, I take time to wait for the dough to rise. This is my way to slow down and smell the roses.
Baking does require great patience. In my hands, the dough is slowly growing. It’s becoming softer. I can feel the change, which connects me to something quite different from the modern way of living. To me, making bread is a push against our culture of convenience. It certainly takes more time than buying bread from a store, but I enjoy it.
I’ve stuck with my grandmother’s recipe without making any change. Now this tradition has continued for years. Sometimes, in order to fit it in, I have to change my schedule. But I have never considered giving it up.
By the time my children get home from school, the bread has been baked and cooled. They step into the house and the first thing they do is to take a deep breath of the warm, honeyed air. My bread-baking has also helped them to slow down and understand the value of taking their time and leading an unhurried life.

Wan Shiyu is a student at Wuhan University of Technology. She loves helping others through volunteer work. She thinks that it is necessary for young people to support society and care for others.
From December 1st to 3rd, 2024, Wan joined thousands of students from all over China. Her project, called “Xingxinxiangyin”, helps children with autism (自闭症). Unlike other short-term services, Wan’s project offers long-term help that meets each child’s needs. It connects families with experts, has fascinating and fun activities for families, teaches people about autism, and provides an online platform (平台) for parents to communicate.

Have you ever wondered what makes a good Chinese essay (文章)? Zhang Xiaoran, a ninth-grade student from Hangzhou, provided us with a perfect answer. In March this year, Zhang’s touching essay, Returning Home on the Old Tracks, got a lot of attention online after her Chinese teacher Mr. Wang shared a video of her reading it aloud in class.
The essay beautifully described Zhang’s childhood memories of traveling with her grandparents on a slow train from Hangzhou to her hometown in Inner Mongolia. She compared this experience with the faster but less enjoyable plane trip she took after the green train stopped running. When the train service resumed early this year, Zhang took it again and wrote about the experience with excitement.
What made Zhang’s essay stand out? Well, she didn’t try to use big words or make up a story. Instead, she started from her personal experience and wrote about something simple—a train ride. It described an ordinary (普通的) day, full of warmth and happiness. Through her words, she shared deep feelings about her family, hometown, and the important memories that came with the journey.
Mr. Wang encouraged his students to bring this honesty to their writing—to be brave and express their thoughts instead of copying others or making up stories. Good writing isn't just about techniques (技巧). It’s about being honest and writing about what truly matters. By writing from the heart, Zhang has shown us the power (力量) of language.

Zach Smith, an 18-year-old senior at Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey, had a problem. “I was not happy with my school’s learning system (系统), and so were my friends,” Zach said. “So I thought I could design an app (应用程序) that would bring together your homework and everything you need all in one place to make it easy for students to stay organized.”
That idea of creating My DE+ put Zach on a journey that would find him learning the finer points of UX design, working with coding platforms (编程平台), and importantly, getting the confidence and trust of the teachers at the school.
“I started with Figma, just prototyping (制作原型) what the app would look like. I met with my head teacher at school and showed him the design. He was like, ‘Whoa, that looks very cool! How do we get this in our school?’ And I don’t think he realized it was just a design. So now I had to get to work building the app,” Zach said.
At first, Zach was considering teaching himself how to code. That’s when he discovered Adalo. Zach was able to create a working prototype. The next question was how to get it on the phones of 500 students in the school. Zach used a business platform called Make. And he changed it and sent everyone a message. “I met with every grade at the school and showed them how to get the app. After a month, I had 500 users on the app, which is almost my whole school,” Zach explained.
Zach has now been talking with other heads of technology of schools in New York City and adding all kinds of new functions (功能) like community pages. “In terms of what comes next, I really hope my app can be used in other schools. Two weeks before the Christmas holiday, I hadn’t sent out our holiday cards yet. Each year, we get lots of cards from friends-some with family photos, some with bright holiday wishes. This year, I wanted to send out cards with nice family pictures.
After taking my two sons to school, I called a local photographer. He said he could come on Sunday morning. He told us all to wear white shirts. I thought it would be perfect.
But I had so much to do-shopping, cooking, and taking care of everyone. On top of that, I had to find white shirts for the whole family. I finally bought white polo shirts for all of us. I felt proud and excited. Everything was ready!

When I was a little girl, my parents were busy working, so I was always staying with my grandmother. She was a fan of Qinqiang Opera and would often hum the opera while cooking dinner. The sound of her voice, rich and filled with feelings, attracted me a lot. I would follow her, standing on a small chair in the kitchen. My voice filled the rooms, even though I seldom understood the lyrics.
One day, my grandmother noticed my interest and decided to teach me the basic singing skills. She showed me how to project my voice, how to move my hands and eyes to express feelings. At first, I had a hard time keeping up, but with her patience and encouragement, I performed well gradually.
As I grew older, my grandmother introduced me to more skills about performing Qinqiang Opera, including facial expressions and costume designs. She also told me that the performer’s feelings built the character, so I learned to put them into my performances, making each character come alive on stage (舞台).
Years passed, and I became more confident in my abilities. I started performing at local events, where my grandmother would proudly watch. Her smile of support filled me with joy and energy.
Today, Qinqiang Opera is not just a hobby for me but a lifelong journey of learning and growth. It has taught me the importance of hard work, the power of expression, and the beauty of cultural tradition. Every time I step onto the stage, I am reminded of my grandmother’s love and guidance, and I am thankful for the chance to carry on her legacy (遗产) through the art of Qinqiang Opera.

A.Relaxing. B.Exciting. C.Fast. D.Happy.

I just love it when I can see an idea in my head, and follow it through from start to finish.”

After taking my two sons to school, I called a local photographer. He said he could come on Sunday morning. He told us all to wear white shirts. I thought it would be perfect.
