A
Don’t call Madison Stewart an environmentalist. She sees herself simply as an individual taking action in defence of something she loves that’s in need of protection.
Despite her youth, the 24-year-old is an undersea veteran (老手). She grew up sailing around the Great Barrier Reef on her parents’ boat and spent her early life free diving while patiently waiting for the day when she could get her scuba diving (水肺潜水) certification, aged 12. Already impressed by sharks, Madison was pleased to be able to observe them in their own world. “I got to know the sharks…I could recognize them by sight,” Madison says. “Other people had dogs around them growing up. I had sharks.”
But within a couple of years, she saw a great reduction in shark numbers on the reef. “One day I went in the water and couldn’t find my sharks anywhere, sharks I’d spent my childhood with,” she says. “They’d been caught and killed.” It was a great moment for Madison.
She left school at 14 to be homeschooled so she could spend more time in the ocean. She taught herself to shoot underwater videos to document sharks in their own world and shared her sense of wonder with others. She launched a YouTube channel and built a huge following for her documentaries where she focuses on issues like inadequate protection for some shark species and the global shark fin (鳍) industry.
In 2014 Madison was the subject of the encouraging documentary Shark Girl, which introduced her to a global audience. In 2017 she appeared as an “Ocean Guardian” in the documentary Blue that explored a lot of threats to the world’s marine environments, including the damaging effect of the global shark fishery. The film encourages viewers to get involved and includes practical steps to guide them to do so. It shows Madison’s philosophy that the power of the individual to make a difference by their own direct action should never be underestimated.

For the first time, United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty (协议) to protect biodiversity on the high seas, representing a turning point for vast stretches of the planet where conservation has previously been held back by a confusing patchwork (拼凑) of laws.
The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into force in 1994, before marine biodiversity was a well-established concept. An updated framework to protect marine life in the regions outside national boundary waters, known as the high seas, had been in discussions for more than 20 years, but previous efforts to reach an agreement had repeatedly failed. The unified treaty, which applies to nearly half the planet’s surface, was reached late on Saturday.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the finalization of the text of the United Nations Ocean Treaty, his spokesman said on Saturday. “This breakthrough, which covers nearly two-thirds of the ocean, marks the culmination of nearly two decades of work and builds on the legacy (遗产) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” a statement said.
Nichola Clark, an ocean expert at the Pew Charitable Trusts called the long-awaited treaty text “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect the oceans—a major win for biodiversity”. The treaty will create a new body to manage the conservation of ocean life and establish marine-protected areas on the high seas. Clark said that’s critical to achieving the UN Biodiversity Conference’s recent promise to protect 30 percent of the planet’s waters, for conservation. The treaty also establishes ground rules for conducting environmental impact assessments for commercial activities in the oceans.
Treaty negotiations were initially expected to conclude on Friday, but stretched through the night into Saturday. The making of the treaty represents “a historic and overwhelming success for international marine protection”, said Steffi Lemke, Germany’s environment minister.
( )5.What can we learn about the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea?
A.It is the basis of the UN Ocean Treaty.
B.It leads to a lot of controversy.
C.It has been discussed for over 20 years.
D.It is a complete failure.
( )6.Which of the following could replace the underlined word “culmination” in Paragraph 3?
A.Beginning. B.Impact. C.End. D.Break.
( )7.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Commercial ocean activities will be monitored.
B.Preservation of 30% of the planet will be ensured.
C.Protected areas on the high seas will be expanded.
D.An existing department will manage the conservation.
( )8.Why is the making of the UN Ocean Treaty recognized as a historic success?
A.It takes tough and long negotiations.
B.The high seas are stressed for the first time.
C.Unity in protecting the high seas is achieved.
D.The concept of marine biodiversity is established.

There has been a very serious decline in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. 1.
Conservation measures will have to be put in place if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent. 2. Many species could disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.
The problem is emphasized by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. 3. The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of particular concern, as large fish tend to produce more offspring than small ones.
4. The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardines and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.
The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. 5. Measures must be taken to not only conserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.
A.Billions of people rely on fish for protein.
B.Many people now choose not to eat deep-sea fish.
C.Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low.
D.This puts them in the category of “critically endangered”.
E.None of these facts has been taken into account by the fishing industry.
F.Overfishing is a major cause of decline in populations of ocean wildlife.
G.This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.

In late February, my dad asked me if I wanted to go fishing with him. I said yes. My whole family, minus one of my sisters, would be going.
On the day we left I was excited to go on the trip. As soon as we got there, I unpacked all the things I had in the bedroom. My bedroom was small and had two bunk beds on either side of the room. The room made me feel like I was in someone’s grandma’s house. It was late by the time we got to the house, so I went to bed quickly.
The next morning I got up and my dad said that we would board the boat for just something to do. As we were in the car, I noticed that it was raining pretty hard outside.
Just then another boat approached us. A man with heavy beard shouted at us, claiming that it was not a good day for boating. He warned us to go back, but we thought nothing of it. The boat was pretty nice. It had a covering over the front side of the boat and seats in the back.
We got out to the water, and the waves started to pick up a little. As we got out to the water a little farther I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be funny if the boat starts sinking?”
Apparently, my thought was starting to come into reality, as the waves started picking up even more. I looked at my sister with a worried look on my face. She also looked worried.
The boat started tipping more as the waves spilled into the boat. My sister and I started screaming. I looked at my dad and he had a worried look on his face too. That was how I knew that things were getting worse.
My dad usually never gets worried about these sorts of things. The water was about knee-high on my sister and me. The boat kept rocking from side to side.
Paragraph 1:
My sister was crying and my mum was yelling at us to put our life jackets on.
Paragraph 2:
I thought I was going to die.

根据第二段中的“The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea came into force in 1994, before marine biodiversity was a well-established concept. An updated framework to protect marine life in the regions outside national boundary waters, known as the high seas, had been in discussions for more than 20 years, but previous efforts to reach an agreement had repeatedly failed.”[《联合国海洋法公约》于1994年生效,当时海洋生物多样性还没有成为一个公认的概念。 以及第三段中“…builds on the legacy(遗产) of the…” 故选A项。
根据第一段中的“For the first time, United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty (协议) to protect biodiversity on the high seas…”(联合国成员国首次就保护公海生物多样性的统一条约达成一致……) 根据画线词前文及画线词后的“…nearly two decades of work and builds on the legacy (遗产) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea…”(……
根据第四段中的“The treaty also establishes ground rules for conducting environmental impact assessments for commercial activities in the oceans.”(该条约还确立了对海洋商业活动进行环境影响评估的基本规则。) 故选A项。
根据首段“For the first time, United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty (协议) to protect biodiversity on the high seas, representing a turning point for vast stretches of the planet where conservation has previously been held back by a confusing patchwork (拼凑) of laws.”(联合国成员国首次就保护公海生物多样性的统一条约达成一致,这代表了地球上大片地区的一个转折点,这些地区的保护工作以前一直受到混乱的拼凑的法律的阻碍。)

2.D 根据上文“Research on five such species shows that numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent.”(对五种这样的物种的研究表明,数量下降了87%到98%。) 切题,this指代上文提到的“…numbers have declined by between 87 percent and 98 percent.”。故选D项。
3.C 根据上文“Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years.”(深海鱼类需要很长时间繁殖,通常可以活很多年。)和下文“The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of particular concern, as large fish tend to produce more offspring than small ones.”(这些鱼的平均尺寸也在下降,其中一个物种的平均尺寸下降了57%。
4.E 根据下文“The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding (快速繁殖) fish like sardines and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.”
