After getting her pilot license (执照) in June at just 15 years and five months — making her the youngest female pilot in Australia — Jennifer Hunt has her sights set on a new record. The teenager and her little dog will set off on Saturday to take off on a month-long journey around Australia’s coastline, in an adventurous effort that would make her the youngest pilot to fly around the country.
Her parents, who have been flying for about 26 years, will complete the same journey in a separate plane. Jennifer said many of these places may only be short stops to refuel (加油), while others may include overnight stays. The two will fly in a seven-year-old plane that Jennifer has flown for about two months. It can also go on the land and the water.
Before her journey, the teenager has put some personal touches on the plane. Close to the front, near the door, many names — like parents and instructors (教练) — are shown. “They’re all the people that have helped to get this trip to come along,” she said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here.”
Jennifer, who is not yet old enough to drive a car, has previously flown in a “Foxbat” airplane. She wasn’t worried about her little dog, Bella, causing trouble on the flight, but she still packed many dog pads (软垫) just in case. Jennifer said Bella didn’t have much flying experience and had only been on two flights. To keep Bella from jumping around and make sure it’s safe to fly, she will be in a wooden box during the flight.
As for her record-breaking achievements, Jennifer said that becoming Australia’s youngest female pilot was far from her first goal — beating her 26-year-old brother to a pilot’s license. “Until one day, when I Googled ‘Who’s the youngest female pilot in Australia?’, it turns out that it was me,” she said.
4. What do we know about Jennifer’s family?
A. They all work as pilots. B. They share a love for flying.
C. Her parents bought her a plane. D. Her parents doubted her ability to fly.
5. Why did Jennifer put some names on the plane?
A. To follow a traditional custom. B. To praise her family members.
C. To remember her flight instructors. D. To thank those supporting her trip.
6. Why will Bella be put in a wooden box during the flight?
A. She is too noisy for the flight. B. She gets nervous easily during long flights.
C. She might influence the flight safety. D. She needs a comfortable place to sleep.
7. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. A teen achieved her goal to get a pilot license B. A teen’s journey to be the youngest female pilot
C. Teen pilot enjoys her dog’s company during flights D. Teen pilot plans record-breaking flight with her dog
C
Many people wonder when the best time to exercise is. Experts have different opinions about morning, evening and afternoon workouts (锻炼). To explore these differences further, let’s look at the benefits of exercising at different times of the day.
Dr. Jagim from Mayo Clinic Health System says, “Morning workouts make you feel like you do something good and start the day on a happy note.” After a morning workout, people feel good because of endorphins (内啡肽). Also, mornings are usually free from other things to do, allowing people to enjoy their afternoons and evenings without worrying about exercise. For morning workouts, Dr. Jagim says, “Eating a varied breakfast with carbohydrates (淀粉质食物), protein, and healthy fats is important. This gives energy for the workout.”
“However, for some people, waking up early to exercise is the last thing they feel like doing, and therefore, the case for evening workouts is more attractive. Your body works best in the early evening,” says Jake Erickson, a sports medicine expert. “This is a good time to exercise. During this time, your body has time to wake up a bit by moving around throughout the day. Also, your body uses oxygen better in the evening. This helps you use your energy more efficiently (高效地) when you exercise.”
A study with over 90,000 people found that exercising in the afternoon is better for your heart and helps you live longer than exercising in the morning or evening. This is especially true for older people. Dr. Gende at Mayo Clinic Health System says that morning workouts might not be good for people who work late shifts or stay up late. For them, it’s better to sleep more in the morning and then do a workout in the middle of the day or early afternoon before their next shift.
While science gives ideas, experts agree the best time matches personal plans and energy. Keeping exercising is more important than timing.
8. What does Dr. Jagim suggest for morning workouts?
A. Taking in more fats. B. Drinking enough water.
C. Having a healthy breakfast. D. Avoiding staying up late.
9. What might Jake Erickson agree with?
A. Evening workouts suit late risers better. B. The later night exercisers wake up, the better.
C. Morning workouts benefit night workers a lot. D. All people’s bodies work best in the late evening.
10. Which group benefits most from afternoon workouts according to paragraph 4?
A. Older people. B. Teenagers. C. Children. D. Young women.
11 Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A. A cook book. B. A health magazine. C. A sportsman’s diary. D. An education news.
D
Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in US to pass a districtwide cellphone ban (禁止). For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn with concentration and worried about losing the easy communication to which they’ve grown used.
Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to exploring the unknown or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media showed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of messages lighting up screens and breaking in class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The study also makes it obviously clear that students have difficulty in controlling their smartphone use, which seriously influences their focus and mental (心理上的) health.
Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut communication between them and their children-not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in case of a sudden serious situation.
Schools have managed to operate well without smartphones for centuries. For worried parents, providing their children with non-smartphones might be the best choice; schools might consider whether selective (选择性的) phone bans that allow such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary.
The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular choice is requiring the use of magnetic bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in case of dangerous situations.
When smartphone bans are done right, they can be helpful to both schools and students. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N. Y., for example, students’ grades have improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are more focused on studies. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.
12. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1?
A. Supported by both. B. Concerned about the future.
C. Not knowing what to do. D. Not good at everything.
13. What does the author mainly want to express in paragraph 2?
A. Parents should help their teens control screen time.
B. Heavy usage of smartphones badly influences students.
C. Texting is a main method of communication for teens.
D. It’s important for students to learn Shakespeare’s poems.
14. What can schools do for worried parents according to paragraph 4?
A. Allow students to carry non-smartphones. B. Provide old-fashioned phones for them.
C. Encourage them to visit the school’s office. D. Set up public phone stations at school for teens.
15. Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To present the school’s teaching achievements. B. To stress the key to improving students’ studies.
C. To explain why parents accept smartphone bans. D. To show smartphone bans can make a difference.

Although he had tried to exchange ideas with his classmates, he was afraid of being laughed at. Shy and reserved (内向的), Jack had always felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Fortunately, Mary, Jack’s science teacher in the new school, immediately noticed Jack and made up her mind to lend a hand. She used different methods to help Jack. Whenever Jack got into trouble in his speech, the warm-hearted and caring woman would wait patiently and smile at him encouragingly. Whenever possible, she was ready to praise his efforts and said to him, “You are so great!” The teacher hoped that such encouragement would make Jack feel more confident in overcoming his speech problem.
Few days later, Mary announced that each student should present (展示) their answer to a problem in front of the class, in their unique way. Jack’s heart sank and the familiar fear and anxiety came back again. He kept thinking how he could possibly stand before his classmates to explain his answer clearly and whether his classmates would laugh at his speech problem again. He sat there, watching his classmates walk up to the front one by one. Most of them went through their presentation smoothly and went back to their seats with big smiles. However, Jack felt anxious while waiting for his turn.

11. Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A. A cook book. B. A health magazine. C. A sportsman’s diary. D. An education news.

A popular choice is requiring the use of magnetic bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings or in case of dangerous situations.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack, who had just moved with his parents to a new town, was new to Emerson School. But he was very worried about his speech problem that had often brought about laughter from his former classmates.
注意:1.续写词数应150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, he heard Mary call his name and was invited to the front.

When Jack finished his presentation, everyone smiled and cheered for him.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Finally, he heard Mary call his name and was invited to the front. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Mary was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, everyone smiled and cheered for him. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Mary’s, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by being shy and reserved, Jack felt a sense of belonging. Where once his shyness had cast a shadow over his identity, it was now just another detail of who he was-a young man with the heart of a lion, fearless of the roar of his challenges.
