On a clear sunny day on the Georgia coast, ecotour guide Rene Heidt leads her guests on her boat through a narrow waterway. Unbroken grasses reach overhead, and there’s no building, power line, or cell tower in sight. It’s a perfect location for visitors to view a nearby mudflat (泥滩), where roughly300,000 shorebirds, including the roseate spoonbill and the whimbrel, come to eat, rest, and nest every year.
Heidt has had a 15-year career as an ecotour guide and much of what she shares on the tours comes from her experiences. But more recently, the University of Georgia’s Coastal Awareness and Responsible Ecotourism (CARE) certification (认证) program has been designed to support ecotour guides like Heidt, helping improve the information they share with tourists. The program offers up-to-date educational material and training to ecotour guides and provides certification that confirms their devotion to preserving the habitats.
While providing knowledge about Georgia’s natural resources, the CARE program also discusses how to visit some sensitive areas responsibly. Now, when Heidt gives boating tours, she rows with a light touch, moving almost silently across the water. When she shares facts about wildlife with her guests, she doesn’t speak louder than whispers. Actually, it’s a skill Heidt must have perfected in her previous career. “The program changes the way I give tours. It helps me to be more mindful of a boat’s influence on the very thing we are trying to teach people about,” she recalled.
Getting trained through the CARE program also benefits Heidt’s business. According to Heidt, the program allows her to learn more about this environment. And that’s knowledge she passes along to her guests. “It’s a fantastic coast,” she says. “And it’s important to share its beauty with others to help them realize that it is worth protecting.”
4. Why was the CARE program launched?
A. To offer the latest tour news. B. To qualify and recognize ecotour guides.
C. To give aid to local education. D. To share and publicize travel experience.
5. What may be the suggestion from the CARE program for visiting sensitive areas?
A. Reasonably arrange travel routes. B. Save as much wildlife as possible.
C. Leave as little impact as possible. D. Fully respect local cultural customs.
6. What is Heidt’s attitude towards the CARE program?
A. Doubtful. B. Tolerant. C. Uncertain. D. Favorable.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Tending to Sensitive Coastal Areas B. Reaching out to Ecotourism Supporters
C. Backing up Ecotourism in Georgia D. Initiating a CARE Certification Journey

Expecting pleasure or pain before tasting hot sauce (酱料) appears to influence how the brain responds to the spicy (辣的) flavour. Brain scans of people tasting drops of hot sauce have revealed how positive and negative expectations can influence brain activity patterns for pleasure and pain.
Yi Luo at East China Normal University and her colleagues employed 47 volunteers — roughly half liked spicy foods and half didn’t — to receive drops of both mild and strong hot sauce in their mouths while lying inside a brain imaging scanner. Computer controlled the liquids sent out not-so-spicy and very spicy sauce, as well as water to clean their mouths, through a bunch of three really long tubes that went right into the participants’ mouths. The researchers conducted one round of experiments without setting expectations. But in the second run, they signaled to participants what intensity hot sauce they would get using different-coloured shapes. An image of two red peppers, for example, signaled the hottest sauce, while one red and one blue pepper signaled the mildest.
The brain scans showed that, for hot haters, the negative expectation of receiving a spicy sample enlarged activity in brain regions that process pain. This provides a “critical warning” for how medical patients’ negative expectations could increase pain, says Luana Colloca at the University of Maryland. By comparison, the positive expectation of receiving a spicy treat boosted a pleasure signature in the brain of hot sauce lovers, but only for the mild version. This represents “parallel subjective realities”, a theory on how expectations shape subjective experiences and perceptions of reality.
“Future studies could investigate how strongly such brain patterns track subjective experiences of pain or pleasure,” says Tor Wager at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. “The broader implications are beyond spicy food,” says Yi Luo. “Understanding how positive and negative expectations influence understanding can inform approaches in medicine. ”
8. What is the research mainly about?
A. How the brain reacts to food. B. How expectations affect feelings.
C. How spicy flavour influences the brain. D. How the brain activity patterns are formed.
9. What can we learn about the experiments in paragraph 2?
A. Participants received three tubes of spicy liquid each time.
B. The second run was conducted without setting expectations.
C. Participants’ brain activities were monitored during the trials.
D. Different images were used to confuse participants’ expectations.
10. What can be concluded from the result of the experiment?
A. Hot haters raise their negative expectations.
B. Participants’ expectations influence their experiences.
C. Hot lovers’ expectations have little impact on the result.
D. Patients’ increasing pain results in their negative expectations.
11. According to the text, which area will the research probably be applied to?
A. Clinical research. B. Psychological test.
C. Medical insurance. D. Restaurant industry.
D
In a recent study in the U.S. and U.K., Van Tilburg and his team asked people through online surveys to describe the characteristics of a boring person according to someone they knew. Being dull and quiet, having no interests, no opinions and lacking a sense of humour are often mentioned.
The researchers then followed up with additional surveys. The results clearly suggest that being considered boring is a negative personality characteristic, and is often tied to introversion (内向).
So why are introverts sometimes seen as boring? Maybe because quiet people value their privacy and avoid sharing their everyday life. Their behavior is the opposite of the preference in a culture towards extroversion (外向). This preference leads to a fixed idea that “quiet” means “boring”, and it reflects a push toward uncontrolled extroversion — just think about people crazily posting nearly everything on social media of their life and activities to attract attention.
Another research argued that it might be problematic to overvalue extroversion as more socially preferred than introversion. This wrong idea might start from teenage years when we think having the most friends and being the best-liked means being popular. This type of everyone-agreed popularity may make quiet people see their lack of extroversion as a deficit.
In fact, introverts tend to have the “quiet ego (自我)”, which allows them to have the ability to put themselves in other people’s shoes and understand situations from a bigger picture. According to researchers Bauer and Wayment, the quiet ego is a way of explaining the self that goes beyond being “self-centered” by considering both self and others. The quiet ego helps introverts to balance self-focused values, like power and achievement, and other-focused values, such as kindness and care for others. Balancing both values can lead to psychological well-being and life satisfaction.
Generalizing introverted people with negative characteristics is false and harmful because introversion can carry positive influences. In fact, an introverted style can be a strength. This is because introverts are likely to be truer to themselves than extroverts. Moreover, accepting their introversion as a benefit would in turn improve the sense of happiness. There can be a joy to being “boring” that can go along with a quiet, introverted personality.
12. Why are introverted people often seen as boring?
A. They have no interest in pleasing others.
B. They refused to express their ideas in public.
C. Their behaviour goes against cultural preference.
D. Their sense of humor is often difficult to understand.
13. What does the underlined word deficit in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Dangerous. B. Weakness. C. Symbol. D. Style.
14. Which of the following would the author probably agree with?
A. Extroversion is more socially beneficial.
B. Introversion usually leads to unhappiness.
C. Being extroverted makes people truer to others.
D. Introverted people are likely to get life satisfaction.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A To discuss different causes of introversion.
B. To explain why introverted people are quieter.
C. To correct a misunderstanding about introversion.
D. To compare self-focused and other-focused values.

I was moving as fast as I could, stepping cautiously from rock to rock along the uneven jetty (栈桥). Far ahead, I could see the back of my brother’s sandy hair and the bright orange of his shorts.
“Too slow, sister!” I heard Sam yell as he hopped with ease.
“I’ll show him,” I thought, and attempted a double jump. What a mistake! My left foot came down hard between the edges of two gray rocks, scraping my ankle. “Ouch!” I yelled. I tried to wiggle (扭动) my foot out, but my shoe was stuck. I bent closer to the rock and that’s when I saw it: a shiny, square shaped stone the color of water, attached to a glittery gold chain. It was just lying there on the wet sand, and a few seconds later it was in my pocket.
Sam squinted (眯着眼睛看) in the sun. Could he tell I was hiding the most perfect discovery of the summer? I kept turning the treasure around in my pocket, pushing each corner of the square stone into my finger. I was dizzy, but I didn’t want Sam to notice. He liked to tell everybody my business.
“Ryan saved the mini cola bottle from the carnival. It happened to be perfect for sand art!”
“Ryan wasted her allowance on salt and pepper shakers from the yard sale!” They were antique little pigs and cost only 50 cents.
My family calls me their “little collector. Some mean kids at school call me “trash girl”.
Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the candy shop, I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Very special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster. The necklace looked different from the one I clutched in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago. We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I thought.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Once home, I placed the necklace in my special spot for special things, lost in thought.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting across from Chrissy in the candy shop.

A. To discuss different causes of introversion.
B. To explain why introverted people are quieter.
C. To correct a misunderstanding about introversion.
D. To compare self-focused and other-focused values.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. C

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“So why are introverts sometimes seen as boring? Maybe because quiet people value their privacy and avoid sharing their everyday life. Their behavior is the opposite of the preference in a culture towards extroversion (外向).(那么,为什么内向的人有时会被视为无聊呢?也许是因为安静的人重视他们的隐私,避免分享他们的日常生活。他们的行为与文化中对外向的偏好相反)”可知,内向者被认为无趣是因为其行为违背了文化偏好。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Another research argued that it might be problematic to overvalue extroversion as more socially preferred than introversion. This wrong idea might start from teenage years when we think having the most friends and being the best-liked means being popular. This type of everyone-agreed popularity may make quiet people see their lack of extroversion as a deficit.(另一项研究认为,将外向性高估为比内向性更受社会青睐可能是有问题的。这种错误的想法可能始于青少年时期,当时我们认为拥有最多的朋友和最受欢迎意味着受欢迎。这种大家都同意的受欢迎程度可能会让安静的人认为他们缺乏外向性是一种deficit)”可知,在这种观念影响下,安静的人会将自身缺乏外向的特质视为不足,推测划线单词deficit意为“弱点”,与Weakness意义相近。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“the quiet ego helps introverts to balance self-focused values, like power and achievement, and other-focused values, such as kindness and care for others. Balancing both values can lead to psychological well-being and life satisfaction. (安静的自我有助于内向的人平衡以自我为中心的价值观,如权力和成就,以及其他以他人为中心的价值观,如善良和关心他人。平衡这两种价值观可以带来心理健康和生活满足感)”可推知,作者可能认同内向者容易获得生活满足感的观点。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Generalizing introverted people with negative characteristics is false and harmful because introversion can carry positive influences. In fact, an introverted style can be a strength. This is because introverts are likely to be truer to themselves than extroverts. Moreover, accepting their introversion as a benefit would in turn improve the sense of happiness. There can be a joy to being “boring” that can go along with a quiet, introverted personality.(将具有负面特征的内向者泛化是错误和有害的,因为内向可以带来积极的影响。事实上,内向的风格可能是一种优势。这是因为内向的人可能比外向的人更真实。此外,接受他们的内向是一种好处,反过来会提高幸福感。“无聊”可以带来一种快乐,这与安静、内向的性格是相辅相成的)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了内向的人常被视为无聊的原因,并指出这种看法是错误且有害的,因为内向可以带来积极的影响,如心理健康和生活满意度。因此,文章的主要目的是纠正对内向的误解。故选C项。

I’m thrilled to hear of your interest in our Campus Labor Festival! You’re warmly welcome to visit our school during the event next Friday Let me briefly introduce it.
First, students participate in a thorough campus clean-up, such as tidying classrooms and planting colorful flowers and trees around the school to create an inviting atmosphere. Moreover, we organize a handicraft fair where handmade items like recycled art are sold to raise funds for rural schools. Additionally, cooking competitions are held in the cafeteria, allowing us to showcase cooking skills using homegrown vegetables from our school garden. Through this festival we students not only cultivate responsibility, teamwork, and creativity through hands-on labor, but also strengthen our connectivity by combining practical work with charitable causes.
Looking forward to your visit for a memorable experience! Feel free to ask if you need further details!
Yours,
Li Hu

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Once home, I placed the necklace in my special spot for special things, lost in thought. My mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. The necklace, with its shimmering stone and golden chain, was undeniably beautiful, but the guilt of keeping something that wasn’t mine weighed heavily on me. I imagined Chrissy’s disappointment and the sadness she must have felt when she lost it. I knew I had to do the right thing, even if it meant parting with my newfound treasure. With a deep breath, I decided to return the necklace to its rightful owner.
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting across from Chrissy in the candy shop. My heart was pounding as I carefully pulled the necklace out of my pocket and placed it on the table between us. “I think this might be yours,” I said softly, my voice trembling slightly. Chrissy’s eyes filled with tears of joy as she recognized her lost necklace. She thanked me repeatedly, her gratitude overwhelming. As we talked, I realized that returning the necklace not only made Chrissy happy but also gave me a sense of peace and pride. I had done the right thing, and that was more valuable than any treasure I could have kept.
