What's the meaning of “dark horse”? It's someone who wins when no one expects it.
Han Xiaopeng took China's first gold medal on snow.He became an Olympic “dark horse” last Thursday by winning the gold medal in men's freestyle aerial skiing (自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score.Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone (更不用说) in the Olympics!
“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23yearold.“I feel like I'm in a dream.” It's China's second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important,Han's gold was the country's first ever in a snow sport. In 2002,China's Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City,US.
That Han's win was unexpected doesn't mean that he didn't work hard.
Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow,he used to be an acrobat (杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995,a coach found his talent. The coach,Yang Er'qi,said Han had the agility (灵活性) and courage to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12yearold to northern China, the boy couldn't swim, skate or ski.But he wasn't afraid of the high platform (跳台) and kept on training.
Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th.“I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly (坚强地) behind me,helping me through,” he recalled.
Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last.Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.

(2025·辽宁铁岭高一上模拟)Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do.Her name was Mrs.White.I don't remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot.And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes, but no red corrections.Instead, there would always be a star or even a “Good”!
During a parentteacher meeting,my mother asked Mrs.White why she never corrected my mistakes.Mrs.White explained that the children were just beginning to get excited about using words and forming sentences, and that she didn't want to make them sad with red ink(墨水).Spelling and grammar could wait, but the wonder of words wouldn't.
Looking back,I realize that if Mrs.White had been stricter with her red pen,I wouldn't be telling you about this now.Her restraint with the red pen allows the joy, wonder, and excitement of expression to bloom (绽放),even if imperfectly.Because to bloom is better than not to bloom.
I used to misspell “beautiful” often.I could never quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”.It drove my high school teacher crazy. She thought that if I was going to use the word so often,I should at least spell it correctly. Finally, the letters went into their right places without my conscious (有意识的) effort. And I'm glad that I didn't wait for them to line up perfectly.“Pretty” is easier to spell, but it doesn't always reach the depth of meaning.
Thanks to Mrs.White,I had no worry about writing what I meant even if I couldn't spell every word correctly.Life isn't pretty; it's beautiful.
[语篇解读] 本文是一篇记叙文。文章通过作者个人的回忆,讲述了自己幼儿园时期的学习经历,特别是与White老师之间关于写作和拼写的互动。
5.What did Mrs.White use to write on the author's writing?
A.Clear advice.
B.Red corrections.
C.Positive comments.
D.Detailed explanations.
解析 C 细节理解题。根据文章第一段“And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes but no red corrections.Instead, there would always be a star or even a “Good!”(我会把我写的东西带回来,她会看,虽然里面有很多错误,但她从不用红笔改正。相反,她总是会在上面画一个星星,甚至写上“好!”)”可知,White老师总是在作者的作品上画一个星星或写上“好!”,这是一种积极的评价。故选C。
6.What does the underlined word “restraint” meaning paragraph 3?
A.Traditional views.
B.Great love.
C.Selfcontrol.
D.Requirement.
解析 C 词句猜测题。根据画线单词上文“Looking back,I realize that if Mrs.White had been stricter with her red pen,I wouldn't be telling you about this now.(回想起来,我意识到如果White老师用红笔对我更严格一些,我现在就不会告诉你这些了。)”以及下文“allows the joy, wonder, and excitement of expression to bloom (绽放),even if imperfectly.(允许表达的喜悦、惊奇和兴奋绽放,即使不完美。)”可推知,White老师自己控制红笔的批改,不在学生的作品上用红笔改正错误,允许表达的喜悦、惊奇和兴奋绽放,即使不完美。由此可知,画线词与C“Selfcontrol(自我控制)”意思一致。故选C。
7.How did the high school teacher feel about the author's misspelling of the word “beautiful”?
A.Confused. B.Annoyed.
C.Surprised. D.Patient.
解析 B 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“I used to misspell ‘beautiful’ often.I could never quite remember that the ‘e’ went before the ‘a’.It drove my high school teacher crazy. She thought that if I was going to use the word so often,I should at least spell it correctly.(我以前经常把‘beautiful’拼错。我总是记不住‘e’应该在‘a’前面。这让我的高中老师很抓狂。她认为,既然我要经常使用这个词,至少应该把它拼对)”可知,高中老师对作者拼错“beautiful”这个词感到恼怒。故选B。
8.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The influence of Mrs.White's teaching method.
B.The importance of using red corrections in teaching.
C.The challenges of spelling and grammar in early education.
D.The difference between the meaning of “pretty” and “beautiful”.
解析 A 主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Thanks to Mrs.White,I had no worry about writing what I meant even if I couldn't spell every word correctly.Life isn't pretty; it's beautiful.(多亏了White老师,即使我不能把每个单词都拼对,我也不用担心写出我想表达的意思。生活并不美好;它是美丽的)”以及全文内容可知,文章通过回忆作者与幼儿园老师White老师的互动,特别是White老师对于作者写作时错误的处理方式,来展开叙述。White老师选择不在学生的作品上用红笔改正错误,而是给予积极的评价,以鼓励学生继续表达。由此可知,文章主要讲述了White老师的教学方法对作者的影响,即让作者敢于表达自己的想法,即使拼写不完美也无妨。故选A。

(2024·广东佛山阶段练习)Born in London on 28 November 1772,Luke Howard was interested in the weather from an early age. 1 He was instead easily distracted (分心) by the clouds he could see through the window. He started his career as a pharmacist, producing and sending out medicines for people. 2 He soon became an amateur meteorologist (业余气象学者).
In 1802,Howard presented his research in a lecture to the Askesian Society,a club for people who were interested in science. At this point, meteorology hadn't progressed as much as other sciences, because it was difficult to take observations when the weather was always changing. To take his observations,Howard did sketches (草图) of the clouds as they moved and changed in the sky. 3
Howard suggested that although the shapes of clouds were changing, there were three basic types of clouds in the sky,to which he gave Latin names. 4 .The second was“cumulus”,meaning heap (一堆) or pile. And the third was “stratus”,meaning layer or sheet. He also introduced four other cloud types to recognize the changing clouds when they are joining together or breaking apart. In 1803,he published his research in a paper called “On the Modifications of Clouds”.
After the publication of Howard's research, the field of meteorology continued to develop.Scientists now have a much greater understanding of weather patterns (模式) all around the world. 5 Professor Liz Bentley,Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, said,“His scientific work helped us understand our climate.”
A.There are now 10 types of clouds.
B.But his true passion was meteorology.
C.But it was Howard's work that started it all.
D.He couldn't stay focused when he was at school.
E.This helped him to recognize the forms we know today.

4.解析 G 根据下文“The second was‘cumulus’,meaning heap (一堆) or pile.(第二个是‘积云’,意思是一堆或大量。)”可知,选项与下文为并列关系,说明的是第一种类型的云。故G选项“第一种叫做‘卷云’,在拉丁语中是卷须或毛发的意思”切题。故选G。
5.解析 C 根据上文“After the publication of Howard's research, the field of meteorology continued to develop.Scientists now have a much greater understanding of weather patterns (模式) all around the world.(霍华德的研究发表后,气象学领域继续发展。科学家们现在对世界各地的天气模式有了更深入的了解。)”可知,选项承接上文说明科学家们现在对世界各地的天气模式有了更深入的了解的原因。故C选项“但这一切都是从霍华德的工作开始的”切题。故选C。
