Steve Wells is a British man who loves looking at trees. He spends most of his weekends doing so, plus evenings sometimes, alongside his day job. “I like giving my time to something worthwhile,” he says. “If I can help to protect our beautiful trees and woodlands, then I have spent my time well.”
In spring 2024, Steve joined Observatree, which is a non-profit project between several organisations and charities. It is run with 200 volunteers who have been trained to recognise new diseases and pest threats to UK trees.
He visits trees, whether individually in woodlands or in parks, to look for symptoms (症状) affecting their health. Also, he keeps reports on his findings and hands them in to the Woodland Trust where the information is added to a database for the use of professional researchers. “One of the good things about this project is that it is really flexible,” he explains. “The minimum contribution required is 12 surveys a year but it is easily achievable. Last year, I actually handed in 40 reports.”
Sometimes his work involves more than just looking at trees, with reports followed up with the collection of samples (样本), which are sent to Forest Research for testing. “There are 22 main pests and diseases that need special attention, including ash dieback, sweet chestnut blight and the oak processionary moth,” explains Steve.
The Woodland Trust recently asked him to become a lead volunteer to help and support other volunteers, and he is excited about what his second year of surveying (勘查) will bring. “If the trees could talk, I imagine the stories they could tell me about what has happened around them over the years. I really like surveying at places of historic interest for that reason, where some of the trees have been around for hundreds of years,” says Steve.
24. What makes Steve Wells think his time is “well-spent”?
A. He learns about tree-planting skills.
B. He helps protect trees and woodlands.
C. He earns extra money from volunteering.
D. He gets a chance to travel to different parks.
25. What extra work does Steve Wells sometimes do besides looking at trees?
A. Selling tree samples to Forest Research.
B. Managing the Woodland Trust’s database.
C. Providing follow-up reports and tree samples.
D. Teaching local people how to prevent tree diseases.
26. Why does Steve like surveying trees at historic sites?
A. Better working conditions.
B. Need for site protection.
C. More rewards for surveying.
D. Curiosity about old trees’ stories.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Steve Wells?
A. Determined and brave. B. Talented and patient.
C Warm-hearted and devoted. D. Hard-working and traditional.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. D 27. C

【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“If the trees could talk, I imagine the stories they could tell me about what has happened around them over the years. I really like surveying at places of historic interest for that reason.(如果树木会说话,我能想象出它们会告诉我这些年来周围发生的故事。正因如此,我非常喜欢在历史遗迹处进行勘查)”可知,Steve喜欢在历史遗迹勘查树木,是出于对古树背后故事的好奇。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“He spends most of his weekends doing so, plus evenings sometimes, alongside his day job. Have you ever wished you could turn back time and do something differently? Maybe you’ve said something hurtful or failed a test. Everyone makes mistakes; the important thing is not to panic. Remember that messing up from time to time is part of being human.
When you mess something up, it’s easy to feel annoyed and frustrated with yourself. However, mistakes give your brain a chance to adjust what it’s doing and learn, so you get things right in future. In fact, they are such an important part of being human that your body often knows that you have made them before you do. Scientists say when you make a mistake, like falling off a bike, your brain creates electrical activity. This sends a signal (信号) to the rest of your brain before you even hit the ground. Studies show these signals teach you to be more careful next time.
Making mistakes teaches you resilience, which means being able to bounce (弹回) back from disappointments or challenges. England footballer Lauren Hemp, who won the women’s Euros with the Lionesses this summer, says sometimes the team makes “mistake after mistake” in matches, but this just makes them more determined to play better. “Even when things aren’t going our way, we can still try to turn it around,” she says. What seems like a disaster (灾难) at the time can sometimes be funny afterwards. So if you cringe about saying the wrong thing in class, you could be sharing a joke about it soon.
“Trying to feel comfortable when things go wrong may seem strange but is a more positive way forward. So the best way to learn from your mistakes is to deal with them in a direct manner”, says Professor Pragya. This is because you often feel embarrassed by your mistakes, so you try to hide them from others, which makes you more likely to repeat them. When you’re not being hard on yourself, it’s easier to learn and this helps you do things differently next time, she explains.
28. Why does the author mention “falling off a bike” in Paragraph 2?
A. To prove that everyone makes silly mistakes.
B. To argue that making mistakes is dangerous.
C. To show how the brain responds to mistakes.
D. To illustrate how mistakes can cause physical harm.
29. What does the underlined word “cringe” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

D
The state of New Mexico is set to become the first in the nation to offer free child care to families of all income (收入) levels. Child care refers to care provided while parents are working, before children are old enough to attend school.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, announced that all families in New Mexico will be qualified for free child care starting on November 1. The announcement fulfills a promise made by the governor and the state legislature in 2019. Low-income families have already had access to free child care, and now the program will expand (扩大) to cover families of all income levels. To meet the increased need, the state said it plans to set up more than 50 new child care centers and about 1,000 homes to serve as smaller child care operations. The program will be paid for in part through taxes collected from oil and gas industries.
In surveys, most Americans see finding affordable and quality child care as a major concern. Child care costs the average US family about $13,000 per child per year. Politicians have debated the idea of universal child care for many years, and New Mexico is the first state to carry it out. Officials said that about 12,000 more children could be qualified for the program.
“Child care is important to family stability, workforce participation, and New Mexico’s future prosperity,” Lujan Grisham said, adding that free care is life-changing because the money saved on child care can go toward other major expenses, like groceries. Other elected officials, including Rebecca Dow, a Republican state lawmaker, argued that not considering the income requirement is a mistake and will help upper-income families who don’t need it.
Lujan Grisham has asked the state to provide $120 million in annual funding to cover the costs of the program. The state plans to launch a campaign to hire more child care providers, and loans will be made available to encourage the opening of new child care centers. Other states and cities could also follow suit.
32. What does New Mexico plan to do to meet more child care need?
A. Build new child care centers and homes.
B. Raise taxes to open more child care centers.
C. Let teachers help with child care after school.
D. Close old child care centers and rebuild them.
33. What can we know about child care in the US in Paragraph 3?
A. All families can afford it easily.
B. The government pays for the costs.
C. The costs are very low for most families.
D. Average families spend a lot on it yearly.
34. What is Rebecca Dow’s attitude toward the new program?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Uninterested.
35. What would be the best title for the text?

C. Warm-hearted and devoted. D. Hard-working and traditional.

A. Feel proud. B. Feel awkward.
C. Get excited. D. Get curious.
30. According to Professor Pragya, what is the best way to learn from mistakes?
A. To hide mistakes from others. B. To keep repeating mistakes.
C. To face up to mistakes directly. D. To ignore mistakes and move on.
31. Which proverb best matches the message conveyed in the passage?
A. Better safe than sorry. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
34 What is Rebecca Dow’s attitude toward the new program?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Uninterested.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. New Mexico Offers Free Child Care for All.
B. Free Child Care Plan Starts National Debates.
C. Governor Promises Free Child Care for All Families.
D. The First State Spends $120 Million on Child Education.
