On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and supported, in an attempt to set the fastest ever time for a solo (独自的) crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles. Currently, the women’s record stands at 99 days and the men’s record at 52 days. The women’s record goes to the island of Oahu and the men’s record goes to the Big Island. Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or woman.
Ditton is a licensed captain and professional adventurer. The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. For the past several years, Ditton has been preparing herself and her boat, ready to take on the challenge of rowing 5,500 miles from Japan to San Francisco in spring, bidding to succeed where 19 other attempts have failed. She has completed several long training rows off the west coast of America, and most recently, a successful728-mile, 24-day training row from Ilwaco, Washington to San Francisco in September 2019.
But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Cafe, an area where great white sharks frequent.
“The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Cafe,” says Ditton.“It’s certainly not over, until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.”
4. What is Lia Ditton’s goal for the crossing?
A. To get the best annual award. B. To be the fastest solo rower.
C. To row for the longest days. D. To reach the farthest island.
5. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Ditton is trained every day. B. What Ditton claimed in the past.
C. Ditton’s readiness for the crossing. D. Ditton’s past experiences of rowing.
6. What can be known from Paragraph 3?
A. The journey ahead of Ditton is difficult. B. Ditton is worried about her future path.
C. Some other ships will keep her company. D. A sea disaster is there waiting for Ditton.
7. Which of the following can best describe Ditton?
A. Fearless yet knowledgeable. B. Strong-willed and positive.
C. Well-trained and intelligent. D. Self-confident but cautious.

Parents of teenagers often view their children’s friends with doubt, worrying that their children will be pushed by their peers (同龄人) into doing something silly or even dangerous. Their worries make sense. In a previous study, psychologist Laurence Steinberg found that a teenage driver with a same-age passenger in the car is at higher risk of traffic accidents than one driving alone or with an adult.
In the following years, Steinberg examined why teens were more likely to take risks in the company of other teenagers. In a later study, by scanning (扫描) the brains of 40 teens and adults, Steinberg found the brains of teenagers, but not adults, showed greater activity in two parts related to rewards (奖赏) when they were being watched by same-age peers. The reward systems of the brain start working whenever people experience something rewarding, like eating a nice-tasting food, which makes them feel good. In this case, rewards are greater for teens, which makes them want to seek higher-risk experiences.
But Steinberg thought peer pressure might also have its positive side. In the latest study, Steinberg’s team used a card game to research how peers influence the way young people gather and apply information. It included 101teenage boys who played either alone or with three peers. They chose cards from four decks (牌堆): two decks had “good” cards, and two “bad” ones. Players with peers were more willing to take risks, trying to figure out which decks could help them to win. The results showed that teens playing with their peers do more exploratory behavior, learn faster and achieve better performance on the task than those playing alone.
Now some experts are suggesting that we should take advantage of the teens’ strong sensitivity (敏感性) to the presence of friends to improve education. “Risk taking in an educational setting is a very important skill that enables progress and creativity,” wrote Sarah Jayne Blakemore, a professor at University College London.
8. What does the author want to say by mentioning Steinberg’s study?
A. Parents’ worries are reasonable. B. Teens drive more carelessly with peers.
C. Adults are better drivers than teens. D. Peer pressure only brings harm.
9. What is the reason behind teens’ dangerous behavior?
A. Inability to tell right from wrong. B. A sense of satisfaction.
C. eagerness to follow their friends. D. Lack of social experience.
10. How does risk-taking influence teens in the latest study?
A. It starts fights between them. B. It inspires them to question.
C. It weakens their independence. D. It helps them to learn better.
11. What does Blakemore think of involving peers in learning?
A. Helpful. B. Unnecessary. C. Risky. D. Challenging.
D
It is not science fiction or a prediction about the distant future. A new AI system that changes brain activity into text is here to revolutionize the way we think about communication, and has the potential to become one of the technological milestones of our era.
Many might remember Stephen Hawking, the British physicist, world-famous for his work on space and time, who used AI technology that helped him speak by detecting the tensions in his cheek muscles. Well, what’s coming next is even more complex.
Neuroscientists (神经学家) at the University of California, San Francisco, have developed a new AI system that can turn neural waves into written words. These findings were revealed in the Nature Neuroscience journal, one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journals, in March this year.
ScienceAlert, a source for the latest science news, discusses how the system uses brain implants (植入物) to track neural activity while someone is speaking. That data is then changed into numbers, which are then translated into words and sentences.
The algorithm (算法) has reached an accuracy (准确度) level of 97 percent, which presents fewer errors than the average human transcriber. The numbers show high levels of accuracy. This is the closest that technology has ever come to being able to “read someone’s mind”.
For now, the technology only works when someone is speaking aloud, but researchers believe that it could eventually be developed to be used for those individuals who, for some reason, are unable to speak or type. This discovery could potentially transform the lives of countless individuals for the better, greatly improving their ability to communicate with others.
While there are numerous challenges ahead, this new study combining neuroscience and machine learning using artificial intelligence, shows how fundamental technology is to improving people’s lives. If we try to put ourselves in the shoes of those who can’t speak for a moment, we will understand why this discovery has the potential (潜力) to be such an innovative one.
12. What does the story of Stephen Hawking indicate?
A. The new AI system is easy to develop. B. The new AI system can predict the future.
C. The AI can help recognize people’s voices. D. The AI technology has played a role in reality.
13. How does the new AI system help convey data according to ScienceAlert?
A. By turning brain signals into words.
B. By changing words into neural waves.
C. By improving the speaker’s thinking ability.
D. By changing the process of brain activities.
14. What does paragraph 5 mainly stress about the new AI system?
A. Its popularity. B. Its high efficiency. C. Its complexity. D. Its potentiality.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. We can completely read people’s mind by AI.
B. The brain implant can restore people’s voices.
C. The new AI system is a promising breakthrough in technology.
D. Technology is the only way to improve human beings’ lives.

The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers’ Mental Health
In today’s digital age, social media has become an important part of teenagers’ lives. 16 This essay argues that while social media has certain benefits, its negative impacts on teenagers’ psychological well-being outweigh the positives.
Firstly, social media fosters (助长) a culture of comparison and insecurity. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are filled with carefully selected images of “perfect” lives, leading many teenagers to feel inferior to them.Studies show that too much exposure to idealized lifestyles can cause anxiety, low self-esteem, and body image issues. For instance, a 2022 survey by the American Psychological Association revealed that 60% of teens feel pressured to meet unrealistic beauty standards online. 17
Secondly, social media addiction ruins real-life interactions and sleep patterns. Many teenagers spend hours going through feeds (推文), sacrificing face-to-face communication and physical activities. The dopamine (多巴胺) — driven design of apps like Snap-chat encourages addictive use, often resulting in loneliness and poor academic performance. 18 Lack of sleep, linked to platforms’ “always-on” culture, worsens mood instability and depression among adolescents.
19 Parents and schools should educate teenagers about digital awareness, emphasizing critical thinking and time management. Platforms themselves must prioritize user well-being by limiting addictive features and promoting authentic content.
In conclusion, while social media connects people globally, its risks to teenagers’ mental health cannot be ignored. 20
A. To reduce these harms, balanced usage is significant.
B. However, it is important to acknowledge social media’s positive aspects.
C. While it offers connection, its effects on mental health remain a heated topic.
D. Besides, late-night screen time affects sleep, which is crucial for mood control.
E. Moreover, teenagers can enhance their academic performance through social media.
F. This constant comparison creates a harmful cycle of self-doubt and emotional suffering.
G. By fostering awareness and encouraging mindful usage, society can help the young employing technology’s benefits without sacrificing their emotional well-being.
