Passage 1
(25-26八上·湖北黄石·月考)Jane was not a confident (自信的) girl before, because she was fat, and others often laughed at her heavy body. As a result, Jane became very shy. She was afraid to ask questions and speak loudly in front of others. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.
But one day, her friend Paul’s words changed her mind. He encouraged Jane to make a change to be better. He said, “If you give it a try, you’ll have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Jane was touched by what Paul said. She decided to change herself.
The first thing Jane did was losing weight. She had a balanced diet and did exercise every day. After 6 months, she lost 90 pounds. This taught her that she could change herself.

We had a terrible school trip last weekend. Some students were late. Then we waited half an hour for the school bus, but it didn’t arrive. Finally, our teacher took us to take the subway. It took us about an hour. After we got off the subway, we walked and got lost. When we finally arrived at the zoo, we were tired and hungry. We wanted to see dolphins, but there weren’t any. There were some really smart seals, but we didn’t see the show because we arrived too late. We left our camera at school, so we didn’t take any photos. Then it started to rain, and no one had an umbrella. So we went for lunch. My friends had some ice cream. But I didn’t have any, because I don’t like it. We didn’t see many animals because of the rain. Finally we went back to school. We were wet, tired and stressed out (心力交瘁). I didn’t enjoy my school trip at all.

“Do you want to grow your own vegetables?” Mom asked. “Yes!” My eyes got big. I was so excited. Mom smiled at my excitement. She gave me a book on gardening, and I carefully planted some seeds (种子) in the backyard.
After supper, I rushed to see how much they might grow. Nothing! My mouth dropped. “Someone stole (偷) my seeds!” Mom laughed from ear to ear. She said, “Johnny, go and check the book.” I read the book and I knew something needed to be done.
Early the next morning, I ran to the backyard. Everything looked the same but I wasn’t that disappointed (失望的). As the book said, I slowly watered my seeds and put my finger in the soil (泥土) to make sure it wasn’t too dry. That evening, I couldn’t help going to check my garden again. No sign of anything green. Just dirt.
The next morning I raced to the garden again. No changes. “Why is it taking so long for the seeds to grow?” I asked. “Grow up!” I shouted. “Please, just grow,” I almost cried. Mom was too busy with housework to help. “Read the book, and wait patiently (耐心地).” So I read again. I removed (除去) the grass from the soil and watered the seeds.
Then one morning, I walked out to my garden. I wasn’t expecting to see anything yet. To my surprise, a little bit of green came into my eyes. I got down on my knees for a closer look. “They grew!” I shouted. I could see little green leaves growing everywhere! “They finally grew! The book is right. (24-25八上·湖北洪湖·期末)
Please mind your shoes!
Crocs, a type of shoe, have become popular among young people in China. You can see these “special” shoes almost everywhere in the street.
Crocs are very comfortable. They are easy to put on. And you don’t need to find clothes to match with them. These shoes go with anything. Crocs come in different colors and styles. You can put all kinds of decorations (饰品) on the shoes. It has become a way to show lifestyles. Maybe they are the reasons why Crocs are so popular.
However, some people believe that Crocs can be dangerous. Soft shoes make people feel comfortable when they are just put on, but they can cause problems. Crocs are not good at helping people keep balance (平衡). So it’s fine to wear Crocs sometimes. When you do sports like running, long walks, or hiking, you’d better not wear Crocs. How do you choose the right hobby? Start with what you enjoyed in the past. Did you once play football? Take it up again or start something else. If you find it isn’t for you now, stop and turn to something new. Maybe joining a class or team will give you a chance to meet other people.
What relaxing activities are good for physical health? It’s clear that exercise is going to be good for your body, such as walking. Dancing is wonderful exercise. The results from 94 studies found that dancing three times a week could help older people to be healthier. Getting out in nature is helpful, whether you’re hiking or doing something less active.

We all know doing exercise makes us healthy. But many of us don’t know which is better, to exercise in the day or at night. Dr. Yang, a famous sleep doctor, advises people to do outdoor (户外) exercise for at least 30 minutes a day in the daytime.
Dr. Yang has been doing research on sports and sleep for years. He finds out that those who exercise in natural light for half an hour every day have better sleep and more energy (能量). Dr. Yang himself gets up at 6:30 a.m. Then he usually takes a walk outside. Sometimes, he walks his two dogs in the park in the afternoon and enjoy the sunlight.

In some schools, students even formed outdoor running clubs. After some time, most students said they benefited (受益) a lot from outdoor exercise. 主题03 人与自我——方法与哲理
Passage 1
(24-25八上·湖北安陆·期末)
Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last (持续) long. To have a good friend, you must learn to treat (对待) your friend in the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest (诚实的), be generous (慷慨的) and be understanding.
Being honest is the start of a good friendship. Friends must trust each other. If a friend finds out that you are not honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.
Generosity (n.慷慨) means sharing. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes to your friend, but you can share the things you enjoy—like your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be meaningful to a friend. They show your friend what is important to you. Your friend can know you better by sharing.
Everyone needs to help with a problem. Talking about the problem to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are the same. But all true friendships have these three things. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice being honest, generous and understanding.

Passage 2
(24-25八上·湖北黄石阳新县·期末)
To plan or not to plan when travelling
People travel in different ways. Some plan the travel carefully before they set out, while others just like to go and see where the wind takes them. Now let’s look at both sides of the coin!
To plan
Planning can help you save money. By planning in advance, you have the time to find the cheapest tickets or hotels. Planning can also help you save time. You can plan your routes and make the most of your time. Planning can make sure you see all the attractions. Before you go travelling, you usually make a list of places that you would like to see! Some attractions might only be open on certain days or certain hours. Some might need a booking. With a plan, you will not miss any of them.
Not to plan
Without any plans, you have much freedom (自由). You can change your routes at once! You can do anything what you want to and go anywhere with anyone you want at any time! You will be happy when you get surprises during your trip. Without any plans, nothing can go wrong. So you don’t have to worry when a bus doesn’t come on time, or when you get on the wrong train. Just relax and go with the flow (顺其自然).
There is no right or wrong way to travel with a plan or not. I think the more important is to find the right balance between the two and finding out which one works better for you.

(24-25八上·湖北荆楚联盟·期中)When I was a child, my hero was the Australian reporter Steve Irwin. I wrote a three-page article about his work with animals. His films were amazing, and made me choose a job like his.
When I said I wanted to study Earth Science at university, people said, “What will you do with your life after studying that?” Actually, I’m already using it, and I haven’t even finished studying yet! I make films and write about science and nature.
Lots of people follow me online. I write about things I want to find out about. I always say if I’m not sure about something. And I often write, “I’m finding out new stuff, just like you guys!”
People often ask about simple ways to help nature. Some things should be easy, but they aren’t. For example, I hate plastic, because it’s dangerous for animals. But my local supermarket only sells fruit in plastic bags. I’d love to buy it without these, but I can’t.
Schools now spend more time telling pupils about wildlife, which I’m happy about. Kids already know what’s dangerous for animals, like pollution and rubbish. (25-26八上·湖北十堰教联体·月考)Have you heard about “survival (生存) holidays”? It is for children to go into the lonely (荒凉的) place for exciting activities, and their parents don’t go with them. During the activities, other grown-ups are not around them either.
Many parents like “survival holidays” because they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend most time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival holidays” can make a big difference to their life.
Is “survival holidays” a great idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. And they need to be on their own. Parents like to see their children join in activities, but they think the activities should be controlled (被控制) by grown-ups. Children don’t know what to do when they meet difficulty. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard thing. Children usually don’t know what to do in face of danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
The survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they learnt. Some learnt to keep their head clear in dangerous times. Some learnt how to stay away from danger. Others learnt how to work in a team. All these will help them a lot in their life.

Yunnan’s migrating (迁徙) elephant herd (象群) headed back home. Since last year, the herd has got attention worldwide for its unusual migration. On March 15th, 2020, the herd began to move north from its home in Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province.
On the travel, the herd visited villages and towns and welcomed two new babies into the family. After a 17-month long walk, the herd finally decided, “East or west, home is best.”
During the travel, the government offered them food and followed them with flying drones (无人机). With the help of the police, more than 150,000 people moved away from the herd. Even as the herd took up many communities (社区) along the way, they left zero injuries (受伤) because the government and people worked together to make sure of the safety (安全) of both animals and humans.
