Typhoons(台风) are terrible natural disasters. They start as big storms over the ocean.
Strong winds lift the moisture(水分) up from the ocean into the storm. Inside the storm, the moisture turns into heat. This heat makes more air move toward the middle of the storm. As more heat and air come together in the middle of the storm, a typhoon is “born”.
The super typhoon Behinca hit Shanghai on Sept. 16, 2024. It had been the strongest
typhoon that hit Shanghai since 1949. The typhoon brought a lot of rain and strong winds
to the city, and also caused a lot of damage(损失) to the city. But do you know Behinca
is actually a kind of milk pudding? So why is a typhoon named like this?
Typhoon names come from the World Meteorological Organization(WMO, 世界气象组织). For the Asia-Pacific Region(亚太地区), the WMO asked each of the 14 member
countries in the region to give a list of 10 names. They can be animals, plants, places and even food of each country. Usually, scientists can use a name many times. For example, this is the third Bebinca in history. But they will stop using a name if the typhoon causes great damage.
So what should we do if we meet a typhoon? Here are some tips for you.
• Do not get close to floods.
• Drink bottled water.
• Watch out for broken electric wires(电线) and fallen trees.

Fire is useful and important to us. You use it to cook meals every day. But if you are not careful, the fire may be dangerous anytime. Many people get hurt or die in fires. So
knowing how to protect yourself in the fire is very important.
When the fire happens, the first thing you must do is to find safe routes(路线) to get
away quickly. If you are on the taller floors of the building, you can’t use the lift. You
should run out along the stairs. From the lower floors of the building, you can jump out
through the window if it is necessary.
If you can’t get out of the room, you must be careful of the smoke. In fact, most of
the people in fires die from the heavy smoke. Find something wet to cover your nose and mouth. Keep low to the ground, and you will take in less smoke. And you can also open
the window, keep your head outside to get fresh air and shout for help.
Remember: Nothing is more important than your life. You must leave everything behind—your money, your pets and so on. After you’re out, don’t go back for anything.
Follow these ways, and you can keep safe in the fire.
19. What do you have to do first when the fire happens?
