years of age.My younger brother is the exact opposite-there's always food left
over The feel of warm water and the smooth feeling of dish soap on dinner plates are
my quiet and safe place at the end of the day.>
About a year ago,our family dishwasher broke. My dad had just left for a work
trip,se I offered to do the dishes by hand to help my mom out who was always very
busy.
At first, doing the dishes greatly annoyed me.I was in a rush to get them done
since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student with many
difficult classes. However,as silly as it might sound, the task of washing food
leftovers off plates and pots soon caused a change in me.And when we did finally get
the new dishwasher set up,I still continued to wash the dishes by hand after dinner,
confusing my mother greatly.
I always start with the dinner plates.I have learned to turn them over and wash
the bottom which,at times, will have dried-up food. Then I move to any bowls that
have been used.I have learned to recognize the one slightly different bowl in our set.

Studying a subject that you feel is pointless is never a fun or easy task.If you're
studying history, asking yourself"Why is history important?"is a very good first step.
You will find something here that catches your interest and gets you thinking about
the value of history.
History helps us know our roots.History is an important and interesting field of
study.Learning the history of our home country can give us a deeper, more
meaningful look into our pasts, and show us how we got to where we are today. Many
people feel like they need a sense of cultural belonging and studying history can
provide this.
History makes us wiser.Reading history is valuable because it allows us to think
about how people lived long ago.Experts say that the basic problems people faced in
the past and now are often similar.Knowing how our ancestors dealt with their
problems can help us better handle our own life challenges.
History helps us understand others.Studying history allows us to see why our
culture has certain customs. It also builds empathy (the ability to understand and share
the feelings of others)between different cultures.Fear of others often comes from not
knowing enough about them.By offering a look into different worlds, history can
help break down this fear.
History can inspire us to learn more. The great thing about history is how it opens
our minds. When you learn about one historical event, you will naturally start asking
questions about things connected to it.For example,if you study 19th-century
England, you might come across Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist. Then, you
might become interested in who Charles Dickens was and what "realism"means.
From there, you might even discover the romantic poets of England.History can take
you on a journey in many directions, and everyone can find a part of it that they
enjoy.
As we can see, history offers us valuable guidance. We don't have to live in the
past, but we can definitely do better by learning from it and using the lessons learnt to
lead more meaningful lives.

An experiment which saw salad seeds sent into space has given hope for the
future of growing food on another planet, according to a recently-published study
The findings have appeared after two kilograms of seeds spent six months on
board the International Space Station (ISS)with the astronaut,Tim Peake,as part of
his Principia mission(普林西比任务).
There, the seeds could have taken in up to 100 times more radiation (than
on Earth while being influenced by the violent shaking from the stresses of space
travel.
When the seeds returned to Earth in 2016,600,000 children from schools across
Britain took part in an experiment, supported by the UK Space Agency,to plant them
and monitor their growth, comparing it to that of seeds that had remained on Earth.
The results showed that, though the space seeds grew more slowly and had a
shorter lifespan, they were still able to survive.
Peake said,"When humans travel to Mars, they will need to find ways to feed
themselves, and this research helps us understand some of the biology of seed storage
and germination (which will be important for future space missions."
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS)tasked 8,600 schools and groups across

Britain with taking part in the controlled study and recording their results as a scientist
would.
It was part of a project called Rocket Science, led by the RHS Campaign for
School Gardening,in partnership with the UK Space Agency.
RHS manager Alana Cama said,"The Rocket Science experiment opened a
window into space biology and allowed young people to be at the forefront of creative
research.”
“This research project did more than just inspire(激励);it furthered our
understanding of the challenges around growing plants in unusual environments and
the possibility of growing food on long-term space missions in the future.Inspiring a
new generation of botanists and biologists will remain our goal to make life richer for
everyone through plants."
37.What do the findings of the experiment show?
A.The future of growing plants in space looks bright.
B.Astronauts successfully grew salad seeds on Mars
C.Salad seeds sent into space turned out to be a failure.
D.The radiation makes it impossible for plants to survive.

When traveling, many find themselves in places where they can't understand the

translation apps. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and receive spoken
translations almost at once, effectively overcoming language barriers.
42.
Google Translate,a well-known tool,often makes mistakes.For
example, translating“my wife is gluten-free(不能吃面筋)”into French or Italian as
"my wife is without gluten"fails to express the intended meaning. However, other
companies offer better choices.43.It offers no direct translations, but
follows how a native speaker talks.
While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they reduce the interest in
language learning.Douglas Hofstadter,a language expert, argues that depending on
machines for communication robs people of the meaningful experiences and a sense
of achievement it can bring. However, others believe most people don't need to speak
the language perfectly for ordinary travel.44.
As AI translation becomes more popular, people may divide into two groups:
those willing to learn languages for cultural experience and mental exercise, and those
who see it as a waste of effort. This issue is especially important for English speakers,
as many schools in English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs.
45.
Direct communication, even if imperfect, creates deeper connections
than depending on technology.
A However, these tools are not perfect.
B.And they like the convenience that AI brings.
C.However, the social importance of language remains.
D.This leads them to depend on gestures, patience,or technology.
