Chinatown in San Francisco****
The Chinatown in San Francisco is the biggest in America, and also the oldest. In 1848, gold was found and it attracted many Chinese immigrants. To earn a living, some opened up shops and restaurants or did other jobs in a small area for Chinese immigrants . It gradually turned into a center for Chinese culture--Chinatown.
Chinatowns keep Chinese customs and people there speak Mandarin/ˈmændərɪn/ (普通话) or Cantonese (粤语). There are Chinese stores, schools, newspaper offices, Chinese communities, and Chinese temples /ˈtemp(ə)l/(寺庙 )and so on. All kinds of traditional festivals and customs have been kept in Chinatown for generations.
In the eyes of foreigners, Chinatown is "little China", where they can get to know Chinese culture. With its multicultural /ˌmʌltiˈkʌltʃərəl/ (多元文化的) beauty, Chinatown has attracted millions of visitors and the government hopes the Chinatown will continue to play an important role in the local tourism.
