Have you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You probably say that they go to learn their own language and English, mathematics, geography (地理), history, science and all the other subjects.
We send our children to school to prepare them for the time when they grow up and have to work for themselves. They learn their own language so that they know and understand what others tell them. They learn English in order to be able to benefit from what people in western countries have written and said, and in order to make people from other countries understand what they themselves mean. They learn mathematics in order to be able to measure and count things in their daily life, geography in order to know something about the world around them, and history to know something about the human beings they meet every day. Nearly everything they study at school has some practical use in their life, but is that the only reason why they go to school?
No. There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school above all to learn how to learn so that we can continue to learn when we have left school. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever he has to do it he does it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, either is unable to do something new or does it badly. The purpose of school, therefore, is not just to teach languages, mathematics, geography, etc., but to teach students the way to learn.
24. In order to make other people from foreign countries understand you, you should learn ________.
A. modern science B. foreign languages
C. geography D. history
25. Nearly all the subjects they learn at school have ________.
A. no use in their future life B. little use in their future life
C. nothing to do with their daily life D. some practical use in their life
26. A person will surely be successful if he really knows ________.
A. how to learn B. some foreign languages
C. something new D. several subjects
27. On the whole, children go to school ________.
A. to learn science and languages B. to learn how to be good students
C. to get ready for their future D. to make new friends
B 25. D 26. A 27. C

On October 18, 2025, the world lost a great physicist when Yang Zhenning passed away in Beijing at the age of 103. Tsinghua University, where he had worked for many years, issued an obituary calling him “one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century” and emphasizing his outstanding contributions to modern physics.
Yang Zhenning’s academic career was filled with groundbreaking achievements. In 1954, he and his collaborator Robert Mills put forward the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory. This theory is so important that it is compared with Einstein’s general theory of relativity and Maxwell’s equations, and it laid the foundation for the later Standard Model of particle physics. Another famous contribution was his work on parity non-conservation in weak interactions, which he developed with Li Zhengdao. This revolutionary idea changed people’s understanding of symmetry in physics and earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957.
Beyond his scientific work, Yang Zhenning had a deep affection for his motherland. As early as 1971, when Sino-US relations were beginning to improve, he returned to China for a visit. This trip had a huge impact and encouraged many Chinese scholars living abroad to come back and serve the country. In 1999, he officially became a professor at Tsinghua University and later served as the honorary director of the university’s Institute for Advanced Study. Even in his 80s, he still taught undergraduate courses and worked hard to cultivate young physics talents.
In 2021, Yang Zhenning donated more than 2,000 pieces of his collection, including books, manuscripts and images, to Tsinghua University, which set up a special “Yang Zhenning Resource Room” to preserve these precious materials.
32. Why did Yang Zhenning and Li Zhengdao win the Nobel Prize in Physics?

根据上文“Meanwhile, select, wash and prepare some vegetables. (同时,挑选、清洗并准备一些蔬菜。)”以及下文“Mushrooms of all kinds are also common to Chinese hot pot preparations. (各种蘑菇也是中式火锅中常见的准备食材。)”可知,此空需列举适合火锅的常见蔬菜种类,衔接上下文。D选项“Popular choices include: cabbage, pea leaves, winter melon, and tomato. (在家中,根据锅的大小,一个火锅最多可容纳4到8人。确保每个人都围坐成一圈,能轻松拿到桌上的所有东西。)”可知,本段围绕“安排火锅座位”展开,此空需作为段落开头,点明主题,且符合前文“Firstly”,“Then”的步骤顺序。B选项“Finally, arrange the seating reasonable. (最后,合理安排座位。)”中的“Finally”体现步骤递进,“安排座位”直接概括本段内容,符合语境。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Prepare a separate small dish for each guest to mix their seasonings. (为每位客人准备一个单独的小碟子,用于调配调味品。)”可知,前文已介绍完制作火锅的所有准备步骤,此空需作为结尾,引出“开始享用火锅”的环节。A选项“Now comes the turn to enjoy your hot pot! (现在就到了享用你的火锅的时候了!)”承接所有准备工作,自然过渡到用餐环节,符合语境。故选A项。

I was a volunteer for an organization at the beginning of this year. The organization is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and program funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organization, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today.”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about seven years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why we’re collecting money for it.”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help,” Lisa said, and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not much.”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one-dollar and five-dollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The boy happily ran to us, holding something tightly in his hand.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The boy happily ran to us, holding something tightly in his hand. Out of breath, he asked, “Would you take a donation from children?” In his hands, he clutched a few crumpled dollar bills. Lisa and I were greatly astonished that a little boy actually cared, so we asked why he wanted to donate the little money he had. The boy replied in an innocent tone, saying that he thought it was the right thing to do and that he wanted to give the money to those who needed it more. Since he couldn’t do this himself, he was grateful that we could reach out to people in need and deliver the money on his behalf.
Both Lisa and I were deeply touched. Many people were so obsessed with themselves that they became insensitive to the suffering of others. However, the little boy, young as he was, acted out of a genuine instinct of goodwill and was able to reach out without hesitation. What the boy did again evoked in me a belief in the noble quality of human empathy. Thanks to him, I reaffirmed the value of the voluntary work I was doing — to serve as a bridge, through which goodwill would be communicated and good deeds be performed.

A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful because whenever he has to do it he does it in the best way.

Onceupon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the sea to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he waswalking along the shore. As he looked down at the beach, he saw a human figuremoving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone woulddance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he wasreaching down to the shore, picking up something and throwing itinto the ocean. “I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfishes in the ocean?”
“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in, they’ll die”
“But, young man, don’t you realize thatthere are miles and miles of beach and starfishes all along it. You can’tpossibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, and said, “It made a difference for that one.” There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all beengifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can know that gift, we will gain through the strength of our vision the power(力量) to shape the future.

A. For developing the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory.
B. For proposing the idea of parity non-conservation.
C. For establishing the Standard Model of particle physics.
D. For donating precious materials to Tsinghua University.
33. What is the significance of the Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theory?
A. It won Yang Zhenning the Nobel Prize alone.
B. It laid the foundation for the Standard Model of particle physics.
C. It changed people’s understanding of gravity.
D. It was developed when Yang Zhenning worked at Tsinghua University.
34. What did Yang Zhenning do after 1999?
A. He first returned to China for a visit.
B. He put forward the Yang-Baxter Equation.
C. He taught at Tsinghua University and cultivated talents.
D. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
35. When did Yang Zhenning donate his collection to Tsinghua University?
A. In 1957. B. In 1999.
C. In 2021. D. In 2025.
