Libraries. They have that reassuring smell of well-read pages, are peaceful, have free Internet and, of course, abundant books.
But guess what? There’s a new kind of library sweeping the nation — a tool library — and it’s just as cool, but in all sorts of different ways.
It’s often said that the average electric drill is only used for 11 minutes in its entire lifetime. Granted, it doesn’t take that long to drill a hole, but still — that’s crazy. Yet the majority of households have one, even though DIY is actually a really infrequent activity for most people.
What if you could just borrow tools when you need them, and drop them back so that they can be used by someone else all the time you’re not DIY-ing? Well, in some parts of Scotland, you now can. Membership-based tool sharing services are popping up in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Linlithgow and Cumbernauld. They work just like a normal library but instead of books, you can borrow a massive range of tools and equipment when you need them, then drop them back when you’re done.
Zero Waste Scotland’s Andrew Pankhurst recently renovated (翻新) his house using the Stirling Tool Library. He said, “It’s amazing. It had all the tools I was looking for, and some I didn’t even realize I needed.”
And that’s the beauty of a tool library. Borrow a tool, use it for one afternoon at a small amount of cost of buying it and instead of it cluttering up your house gathering dust, it’s back off to a busy life all across town, week in and week out.
The tools available to borrow are mainly received as donations. The tool library will then repair them if needed and PAT test for safety ready to be borrowed and saved from going to landfill.
So next time you have a job to do around the house, why not borrow rather than buy?
28.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.The electric drill is worth buying.
B.People dislike to use out-of-date tools.
C.Most of the tools aren’t often used at home.
D.DIY is a really frequent activity for most people.
29.What does Andrew Pankhurst think of the tool library?
A.Familiar. B.Practical.
C.Essential. D.Disappointing.
30.What do the underlined words “cluttering up” probably mean?
A.Clearing up. B.Piling up. C.Throwing out. D.Breaking up.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Borrowing Is the New Buying
B.Please Make a Donation Today
C.When in Doubt, Go to the Library
D.Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader
【答案】28.C 29.B 30.B 31.A
根据第三段中“It’s often said that the average electric drill is only used for 11 minutes in its entire lifetime. (人们常说,普通的电钻在其整个使用寿命中只使用11分钟)”和“Yet the majority of households have one, even though DIY is actually a really infrequent activity for most people. (然而,大多数家庭都有一个,尽管DIY对大多数人来说实际上是一个频率很低的活动)”可知,此处通过普通电钻的实际使用寿命说明人们很少使用它,而且大多数人很少从事DIY活动。由此推知,多数工具在家里都不常用。故选C项。
29.推理判断题。根据第五段中Andrew Pankhurst所说的话“It’s amazing. It had all the tools I was looking for, and some I didn’t even realize I needed. (这是惊人的。它有我一直在寻找的所有工具,还有一些我甚至没有意识到我需要)”可知,Andrew Pankhurst表示这个工具图书馆为他提供了所有需要的工具。由此可知,他觉得它是实用的。故选B项。
30.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Borrow a tool, use it for one afternoon at a small amount of cost of buying it (借一个工具,用一个下午,用一个下午,花的钱只是买工具的一小部分)”和“instead of (而不是)”可知,此处描述的是与短暂地借用工具不同的情况,再结合下文“gathering dust (积灰)”可推知,此处指买了工具后,把它堆积在家里,在那里积灰。
There’s a new kind of library sweeping the nation — a tool library — and it’s just as cool, but in all sorts of different ways. (但你猜怎么着?有一种新的图书馆正在席卷全国——工具图书馆——它同样很酷,但方式各不相同)”和最后一段“So next time you have a job to do around the house, why not borrow rather than buy? 故选A项。

Hannah Huxford encountered the fry-stealing gull in Bridlington, a coastal town on the Yorkshire coast. Huxford snapped the well-timed photo on her iPhone in 2011; it went viral soon after. A decade later, the fry-stealing gull is appearing on billboards, as part of an advertising campaign for Google.
Researchers recently discovered that food may actually become more attractive to gulls when the birds observe humans handling it first, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
Because the birds seem to be attracted to food items that they’ve watched humans touch, another of the study’s authors, says that it’s even more important to properly throw food waste and snack wrappers in the trash. “Our findings suggest that gulls are more likely to approach food that they have seen people drop or put down, so they may associate areas where people are eating with an easy meal,” Dr. Laura Kelley said.
The scientists approached 74 herring gulls in coastal towns in Cornwall, tempting them with weighted bags of fried potatoes. Only 19 gulls were curious or hungry enough to linger (逗留), allowing the scientists to place the bag on the ground and retreat a short distance away, waiting in a crouched (蹲下) position to see if a gull would approach.
Their experiments demonstrated that gulls were more cautious about approaching a tempting treat if there was a person nearby who was watching them closely. However, the scientists also found that far fewer of the birds than expected showed interest in investigating the food at all when being stared at.
In fact, people may be able to protect their lunches from gulls by avoiding areas where the birds tend to gather and keeping a closer eye on their meals, she added. “Gulls have a bad reputation but, like all animals, they are just trying to survive,” Goumas said. “We can try to alleviate the conflict we have with them by making changes in our own behavior.”
32.Why does the author mention “the fry-stealing gull photo” in Paragraph 1?
A.To open up the topic. B.To kid about the gull.
C.To tell us an episode. D.To introduce the background.
33.What can we know about gulls from the scientists’ experiments?
A.They don’t like the food left over by humans.
B.They approach the treat when they are hungry.
C.They are interested in eating food with humans.
D.They probably won’t eat the treat when being watched.
34.What’s Goumas’s attitude to the action of the fry-stealing gull?
A.Conservative. B.Sympathetic.
C.Skeptical. D.Indifferent.
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.B
根据第一段中“Hannah Huxford encountered the fry-stealing gull in Bridlington, a coastal town on the Yorkshire coast. Huxford snapped the well-timed photo on her iPhone in 2011; it went viral soon after. (汉娜·赫克斯福德在约克郡海岸的海滨小镇布莱德灵顿遇到了这只偷吃薯条的海鸥。赫克斯福德在2011年用她的iPhone拍下了这张照片;这张照片很快就在网上疯传)”以及第二段“Researchers recently discovered that food may actually become more attractive to gulls when the birds observe humans handling it first, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science. (根据2020年发表在《皇家学会开放科学》杂志上的一项研究,研究人员最近发现,当鸟类看到人类先吃食物时,食物对海鸥来说可能会变得更有吸引力)”可推知,作者在第一段提到“偷薯条的海鸥照片”是为了引出话题,介绍海鸥偷吃人类食物的行为。故选A项。
根据第五段“Their experiments demonstrated that gulls were more cautious about approaching a tempting treat if there was a person nearby who was watching them closely. However, the scientists also found that far fewer of the birds than expected showed interest in investigating the food at all when being stared at.(他们的实验表明,如果附近有人密切注视着海鸥,它们会更加谨慎地接近诱人的食物。然而,科学家们也发现,当被盯着看时,对食物表现出兴趣的鸟类比预期的要少得多)”可知,在被密切注视时,海鸥会更加谨慎,由此可推知海鸥可能不会在被注视的时候吃这种食物。故选D项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Goumas said. “We can try to alleviate the conflict we have with them by making changes in our own behavior.
What’s Your preferred playback Speed?
Glen Powell, a Hollywood idol, likes 1x listening speed: “I want to hear people talk at a normal human rate.” Bowen Yang, an American comedian, prefers his narration fast and loose. “You can round up to 2x”, though he considers 1.8x the perfect pace. Both men appeared in an advertisement by Audible, an audiobook platform, which featured various celebrities talking about the speed at which they listen to their chosen titles. 35 “I listened to your judgmental ad on 2x speed,” one TikTok user said. Some claimed to feel “shamed” by the advertisement and threatened to cancel their subscriptions.
36 . A recent survey found that 31% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 listen to audio at playback speeds faster than 1x. The time-saving benefits can be enormous. 37 If you had a ten-hour journey, you could listen to “Persuasion” in eight hours and 13 minutes at 1x speed. But, if you clicked 1.5x, you’d hear all about Anne Elliott’s exploits in five and a half hours, leaving space for “Animal Farm” and “The Little Prince”, with time to spare.
38 . The average person speaks at a rate of about 150 words per minute, but most brains are capable of processing information faster than that, says Marcus Pearce, a cognitive scientist. Researchers looked at the test scores of students who had watched lectures back at varying speeds and found that up to 1.5x there was not much of a difference in performance, although scores started to decrease noticeably as playback speeds approached or exceeded 2x.
For audio and video platforms, there is no downside to offering different playback options. The more books or episodes a subscriber gets through, the better the advertising and sales revenues. But for listeners, the experience differs greatly between 1x and 2x. audiobook narrators hold that there’s an art of pacing, tone and suspension to reading aloud. 39 Rhetoric (修辞) often relies on rhythm and pauses for emphasis and meaning: few actors race through the soliloquies in “Hamlet”, for instance. Yet for many, to speed or not to speed is no longer a question.
A.A faster pace does not seem to affect listeners’ ability to concentrate.
B.If listeners speed that up too much, they’re losing that part of the performance.
C.It triggered fierce debate online for implying that those who make haste are weird.
D.YouTube claims that its viewers collectively save more than 900 years per day thanks to its fast-playback feature.
E.The online argument points to the changing way in which audiences, particularly young ones, engage with digital media.
F.Thus, while younger adults can watch videos at faster speeds without significant consequences, we advise against older adults doing so
G.This may be especially important as age-related changes in cognition may necessitate adjustments to instructional videos to optimize learning.
【答案】35.C 36.E 37.D 38.A 39.B
35.上文“Both men appeared in an advertisement by Audible, an audiobook platform, which featured various celebrities talking about the speed at which they listen to their chosen titles.(两人都出现在有声书平台 Audible 的一则广告中,这则广告展示了多位名人谈论他们听所选作品时的播放速度)”介绍了Audible的广告内容,下文““I listened to your judgmental ad on 2x speed,” one TikTok user said. Some claimed to feel “shamed” by the advertisement and threatened to cancel their subscriptions.(“我用两倍速听完了你们这条带有评判意味的广告,” 一位抖音用户表示。一些人声称被这则广告 “羞辱”,并威胁要取消订阅)”提到TikTok用户对广告的负面反馈,因此空格处需体现广告引发的争议,选项C“它因暗示 “做事匆忙的人很怪异”,在网上引发了激烈争论。。”符合题意,选项中的it指代广告,triggered fierce debate online引出下文用户的负面反馈。故选C。
36.下文“A recent survey found that 31% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 listen to audio at playback speeds faster than 1x.
38.下文“The average person speaks at a rate of about 150 words per minute, but most brains are capable of processing information faster than that, says Marcus Pearce, a cognitive scientist. Researchers looked at the test scores of students who had watched lectures back at varying speeds and found that up to 1.5x there was not much of a difference in performance, although scores started to decrease noticeably as playback speeds approached or exceeded 2x.(认知科学家马库斯·皮尔斯说,人的平均说话速度约为每分钟150个单词,但大多数人的大脑处理信息的速度都比这快。研究人员观察了以不同速度观看讲座的学生的考试成绩,发现当播放速度达到1.5倍时,他们的表现并没有太大差异,尽管当播放速度接近或超过2倍时,分数开始明显下降)”说明大脑能快速处理信息,1.5倍速内不影响表现,空格处需概括 “快放不影响注意力或表现总起下文内容。选项A“更快的速度似乎并不影响听众的专注能力。”符合题意。故选A
39.上文“But for listeners, the experience differs greatly between 1x and 2x. audiobook narrators hold that there’s an art of pacing, tone and suspension to reading aloud.(但对于听众来说,1 倍速和 2 倍速下的收听体验差异巨大。
A Sea Story
About three years ago, something terrible happened to me. That was the day when it took only six hours to break my body and soul. You think I am a very old man—but I am not. It took less than a single day to change my hair from black to white.
One day, my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going and got more fish than others. All at once, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. A hug wave covered our boat and my younger brother fell into the sea. My elder brother put his mouth close to my ear and cried out “Moskoe-strom!” The moment I heard the word I became very frightened. I knew what he meant by that one word well enough.
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool. We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed, I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool—trees and barrels. After a while, I became curious about the whirlpool itself. I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel to help me float. I tried to make my brother understand, but he was too frightened and stayed in the heavy boat. Without waiting, I jumped into the sea to try and escape.
Some time after I left the boat, with my brother in it, it was pulled into the bottom of the whirlpool. Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild. Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the moon was shining. I was still tied to the barrel and the waves soon carried me to an area where the other fishermen were. In the end, a boat picked me up. I was very tired. The fishermen were my old friends, but they were unable to recognize me. (adapted from Lesson 1, 480 words)
40.What were the three observations the storyteller made?
41.Why did the storyteller survive while his elder brother didn’t?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The other fishermen couldn’t recognize me because my appearance had greatly changed after I struggled and survived a whirlpool.
43.What lessons have you learnt from the story? Give your reasons. (about 40 words)
40.The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. 41.The storyteller found a way to escape and told his brother, but the brother was too scared and unwilling to follow the author, so the storyteller survived, while the brother did not. 42.The other fishermen couldn’t recognize me because my appearance had greatly changed after I struggled and survived a whirlpool. The other fishermen couldn’t recognize me because my hair changed from black to white after I struggled and survived a whirlpool. 43.From the article, it can be seen that when the author is in danger, he can still remain calm and analyze the situation at that time, boldly make reasonable conclusions and take action to save his own life.
根据第四段“I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. (然后我得出了三个重要的观察。首先,物体越大,坠落的速度就越快;第二,在同等程度的两个物体之间,圆形物体下落的速度较慢;第三,在两个相同大小的物体之间,形状像管子的物体下落得更慢。)”可知,作者得出的三个重要的观察是:首先,物体越大,坠落的速度就越快;第二,在同等程度的两个物体之间,圆形物体下落的速度较慢;第三个,在两个相同大小的物体之间,形状像管子的物体下落得更慢。故答案为The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly.
根据第四段“I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell; the second, between two objects of equal extent, round objects fell down less rapidly; and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. The storyteller found a way to escape and told his brother, but the brother was too scared and unwilling to follow the author, so the storyteller survived, while the brother did not.
根据第一段“That was the day when it took only six hours to break my body and soul. You think I am a very old man—but I am not. It took less than a single day to change my hair from black to white. (那一天,我只用了六个小时就伤透了身体和灵魂。你认为我是一个很老的人,但我不是。我只用了不到一天的时间就把头发从黑色变成了白色。)”可知,作者的朋友认不出他应该是因为他的头发从黑色变成了白色,所以他们只是觉得他是位老人。故答案为The other fishermen couldn’t recognize me because my appearance had greatly changed after I struggled and survived a whirlpool. The other fishermen couldn’t recognize me because my hair changed from black to white after I struggled and survived a whirlpool.
根据第四段“The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed, I saw clearly that there were other objects in the whirlpool—trees and barrels. From the article, it can be seen that when the author is in danger, he can still remain calm and analyze the situation at that time, boldly make reasonable conclusions and take action to save his own life.

When I was in my primary school, I had an opportunity to attend a musical contest held in my school. That was the first time I watched a live musical performance. The fantastic players touched me deeply.
I asked my parents allowing me to take up a piano lesson for beginner. In the beginning, it was quite difficult to read the notes on the stave. However, it did not demoralize me. I spent most of my leisure hours to practice piano. Although my fingers were painful after few hours practice, I felt satisfied if I could play a music piece completely.
Even though I will not pursue as my life career, I will still continue learning and playing piano as my hobby. It is simply because music is the best medication for my soul.

A nine-year-old boy has set a new 5km parkrun world record for his age group. Louis Robinett, a member of the Poole Runners junior athletics club, shaved 13 seconds off the previous world record, which was set in California in 2017, after he crossed the line in 17 minutes and 40 seconds.
Louis, who broke the record at the Poole parkrun in Dorset on Saturday, said, “I’m on top of the world right now. It’s a huge deal to break a world record. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and the team at Poole Runners.”
Louis was accompanied on the parkrun by Dion Garner, a member of his athletics club, as all under-11s in the 5km event must run within arm’s length of an adult. Garner said of Louis’s achievement, “His natural talent, combined with his dedication and spirit, is mind-blowing. He loves the sports and has really practiced a lot.” A spokesman for Poole Runners said, “With his new world record, Louis has raised the bar for young athletes everywhere. This isn’t just a win for Louis, it’s a new benchmark (标准) for youth sports, inspiring children all over the world to aim higher.”
Parkrun was started by 13 friends as a weekly event in Bushy Park, southwest London, in 2004. By 2015 more than 80,000 people were gathering in parks around the world each Saturday to participate in a parkrun. Only three years later about a quarter of a million people were taking part in parkruns each week, in 1,500 events spread across 20 countries.

B.Please Make a Donation Today
C.When in Doubt, Go to the Library
