Harold Simmons never intended to become a neighborhood legend (传奇). At 73, he was just a retired worker with too much time and an empty backyard. What started as a simple garden railroad project quickly became something extraordinary.
It began with a single circular track and an old steam engine he’d rescued from a sale. Each day, he would add tiny details — a tiny general store, a little church and some handcrafted trees. The neighborhood children would sometimes look over the fence, their eyes wide with wonder.
One particularly curious 10-year-old named Maya started visiting regularly after school. Her working parents appreciated that Harold didn’t mind her watching him work. He’d explain each tiny detail. Word spread. Neighbors who had previously just waved politely stopped to admire Harold’s growing landscape. Children brought their parents. Retired workers shared stories about the real trains and towns the models represented.
When the local elementary school heard about Harold’s project, they asked if he’d be willing to host a field trip. Harold was surprised. Suddenly, classrooms of children were learning history, engineering, and creativity through his tiny railroad.
Maya convinced her uncle to create a website showing Harold’s railroad. It went popular locally and then regionally. People started sending him miniature (微型的) pieces like a tiny water tower from Wisconsin. Soon the railroad became a living history museum, a classroom, and a gathering place.
On weekends, Harold would let children control the trains, their small hands carefully managing the controllers and their faces lit with pure joy. Some parents noticed their kids were learning patience, precision, and storytelling through this simple hobby.
By the time Harold turned 80, his backyard had become a community landmark. Local schools included visits into their curriculum (课程). retirement homes organized group trips. Artists and historians turned to him. The tiny tracks became something magical, showing how passion, creativity, and openness could build connections far bigger than anyone could imagine.
4. Why did Harold start building the garden railroad?
A. To kill his spare time. B. To host field trips.
C. To train local children. D. To become famous.
5. What was the neighbors’ attitude toward Harold’s project?
A. Critical. B. Negative. C. Appreciative. D. Uncertain.
6. Why did Harold’s project attract the local elementary school?
A. It included a new steam engine. B. It had an educative value.
C. It was praised on a website. D. It was a garden programme.
7. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. One is never too old to learn.
B. Many hands make light work.
C. Education knows no boundaries.
D. Small things make a big difference.

The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways. One group is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type of gut (肠道) bacteria known as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems to produce some really remarkable effects. Now, a Chinese team is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high altitudes. Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging environments.
Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet changes on their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went from being rare to very abundant in their guts.
In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab first and then simulated (模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day. The Blautia-treated mice showed milder response of altitude sickness. This opens the door into whether altitude sickness might be amenable to treatment through the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may also extend to the brain. “Its superpower comes from the connection between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty acids it makes are known to activate receptors (神经末梢) on nerves that connect the digestive system, heart and brain. This could help explain a surprising relationship that Klepac-Cerak reported last year: Kids are more likely to talk and laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts. “There’s lots of communication happening between our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us.” Klepac-Cerak notes.
Blautia’s apparent superpowers suggest to Kong it could serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first, Kong says, he wants to find out whether Blautia is a “solo” player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group of bacteria.
8. What’s the newly-found benefit of the study led by a Chinese team?
A. It gets public attention. B. It helps people do better at high altitudes.
C. It makes social media angry. D. It introduces an advanced new technology.
9. What do we know about the subjects (实验对象) in both experiments?
A. They experienced low-oxygen conditions.
B They received Blautia in their diet.
C. They moved to high-altitude regions.
D. They suffered severe altitude sickness.
10. What does the underlined word “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?”.
A. Careless B. Untreatable. C. Unchangeable D. Reactive.
11. How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s role in human health?
A. double-edged sword. B. A solo player.
C. An extremely effective solution. D. A partially-understood influence
B 9. A 10. D 11. D
根据第一段的句子“Now, a Chinese team is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high altitudes. Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging environments.(现在,一个中国团队看到了Blautia的另一个潜在好处:帮助人们适应高海拔地区。他们的研究结果表明,提供Blautia可以帮助登山者和其他人在这些具有挑战性的环境中表现得更好。)”可知,Blautia有助于人们在高海拔环境中表现更好。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters.(中国科学院遗传学家Qing-Peng Kong和他的团队招募了45名男性,让他们从海拔250米的家中搬到海拔约3700米的城镇)”和第三段的句子“In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab first and then simulated(模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day.(在第二个实验中,研究小组首先将小鼠暴露在实验室控制的低氧条件下,然后模拟海拔4000米的环境,同时每隔一天给一半的小鼠喂食Blautia。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段的句子“But first, Kong says, he wants to find out whether Blautia is a ‘solo’ player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group of bacteria.(但首先,Kong说他想弄清楚Blautia是否是“独奏者”,还是作为更大细菌群体的一部分才具有这些保护作用)”和第四段的句子“There’s lots of communication happening between our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us.(我们的大脑之间有很多交流;我们才刚刚开始发现细菌为我们做了什么。)”

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria (细菌) present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
12. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They absorb more CO2. B. They help turn CO2 into solids.
C. They release oxygen quickly. D. They live in harmony with bacteria.
13. What is the core challenge before applying the discovery globally?
A. Assessing the cost of the process. B. Understanding the impact on soil.
C. Quantifying the CO2 transformation. D. Collecting the data on biodiversity.
14. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The seriousness of climate change. B. The method of green development.
C. The prospect of scientific approaches. D. The role of nature in climate solutions.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A defensive Strategy in Nature B. A Recent Advance in CO2 Research
C. Kenyan Trees: A Natural Carbon Lock D. Tree Planting: A Key to Ecological Balance
B 13. C 14. D 15. C

空格前文提出问题“What if the key to a more fulfilling life isn’t about doing more, but about doing differently?(倘若通往更充实生活的关键并非在于做更多的事情,而是在于采取不同的方式呢?)”
根据上文“Pleasing activities are low-effort, high-reward. You don’t need to plan them far in advance or clear out a full afternoon. It might be a walk in nature, listening to your favorite playlist, or calling a friend just to say hello.(令人愉悦的活动往往不需要花费太多精力,却能带来丰厚的回报。你无需提前精心规划,也不需要占用整个下午的时间。这可以是一次在大自然中的漫步,听听你最喜欢的音乐,或者只是给朋友打个电话问候一下)”以及后文“One of the biggest misconceptions about fun is that it has to be some grand event. In truth, the most restorative moments often come from these smaller, everyday pleasures.(关于“乐趣”的最大误解在于,人们认为乐趣必须是某种重大的活动。但事实上,最能让人恢复精力的时刻往往来自于那些平凡的、日常的小享受之中)”可知,上文对令人愉悦的活动进行了说明,空格后文则是在总结这类活动的特点,G选项中的“These”指代前文的例子。故G选项“这些是简单而纯粹的快乐,不需要太多投入,却能带来实实在在的满足感”符合语境。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据后文“They might feel challenging at first, but they match with your values and leave you with a real sense of meaning. It could be learning a new skill that pushes you out of your comfort zone. These types of experiences take more effort than Pleasing activities, but they often help us feel more alive.(起初可能会觉得有些困难,但它们与你的价值观相符,能给你带来真正的意义感。这可能是学习一项新技能,它能让你走出舒适区。这类经历比那些让人愉悦的活动需要付出更多的努力,但它们往往能让我们感觉更加充满活力)”可知,本段论述的主要是成长型的活动。B选项“成长活动是那些让你延伸自我的活动”是对这类活动的定义,与后文内容相符。故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Yielding activities are activities that require little effort but offer little satisfaction.(“消耗性活动”指的是那些所需付出的精力较少,但带来的满足感却很少的活动)”可知,空格前文定义“Yielding activities”并指出其特点。

故填where。
line with“沿着……排列”,固定短语,此处表示现在所处的状态,句子用一般现在时态,主语The former concession areas是复数,所以be动词用are。故填are lined。

The date had been circled on my calendar for months — Friday 30 December. Mum was coming to pick me up from university and bring me home for the New Year celebrations. I loved every second of university life, but I couldn’t wait to go home. There was nothing that made me happier than the thought of the celebrations with my family.
Our small celebrations were the same every year. Mum, Dad, my younger brother Ollie and I all dressed up and created a special meal. Then we sat down to dinner and enjoyed it together, chatting happily. After that, we sat in front of the TV until bedtime.
The call came at 10 am that Friday. I was dressed and packed. “We’re not going to make it,” my mum said, sounding upset on the phone. “Kent has been blanketed overnight, with up to 20cm falling in three hours. We’ve crawled (缓行)as far as Detling, but they’ve closed the motorway. It’s already taken us two hours. There’s no way we can get to you.”
“What am I going to do?” I was hopeless and sick with anxiety. My life was different from that of other students. Being disabled means everything has to be organized ahead of time — a sudden change of plan isn’t an option. Even though I had my carer to help me cook, wash and get into bed, I still missed the joy of our celebrations.
Alone in my student bedroom, I was a bit frustrated. Suddenly a picture on the wall caught my attention. It was a picture of a family reunion filled with laughter, hugs, and delicious food. It reminded me of the power of connection and the importance of cherishing these moments. I decided to push aside my fears about how I would ever get home.
Although I’d travelled with my family three times in my life, travelling independently using a wheelchair came with many challenges for me. I could imagine the difficulty of booking assistance at every train station, getting on and off the train... So I worked out a detailed plan, hoping everything would be fine.
Paragraph 1: Not long after that, a taxi took me to the railway station.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: A taxi, three trains, five hours and 140 miles later, I was finally home.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Not long after that, a taxi took me to the railway station. I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety as I navigated the familiar route. My heart raced at the thought of taking this journey on my own, but I reminded myself of the warmth and joy waiting for me at home. Upon arriving, I quickly located the assistance desk and explained my needs. The staff were incredibly helpful, guiding me to the platform and ensuring I was comfortable. The train ride was smooth, and I found a window seat to enjoy the snowy landscape flashing by.
A taxi, three trains, five hours and 140 miles later, I was finally home. The moment I stepped through the door, I was enveloped in a wave of warmth and love. My family rushed to greet me, their faces lighting up with joy. We shared hugs and laughter, and I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. We quickly gathered in the kitchen to prepare our traditional meal together, the familiar scents filling the air. As we sat down to dinner, I realized that despite the challenges, I had made it home for New Year celebrations.

B. They received Blautia in their diet.
C. They moved to high-altitude regions.
D. They suffered severe altitude sickness.
10. What does the underlined word “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean?”.
A. Careless B. Untreatable. C. Unchangeable D. Reactive.
11. How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s role in human health?
A. double-edged sword. B. A solo player.
C An extremely effective solution. D. A partially-understood influence
D
