Josh and his mom were on a road trip. There was a sudden shake as the van (面包车) hit a deep hole in the dirt road. “Oof!” Josh said. “Five minutes.” Josh’s mom smiled. “It’ll be worth the rough ride to swim in a cenote (天然井).” Josh nodded.
The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico was the best vacation place ever. But right now, Josh felt left out. He couldn’t understand what the other tourists in the van, two families from Mexico City, were saying.
“El serpiente grande!” a boy Josh’s age shouted. The boy’s brother and dad looked out the window. Another young boy, sitting with his parents and grandparents, chatted excitedly in Spanish. Josh shrugged at his mom. “‘Grande’ means ‘big’, but I’m not sure I know what ‘serpiente’ means,” she said.
Josh peered out the window too. Maybe ‘serpiente’ meant “snake”. He’d done a research report on snakes and knew there were some big ones in Mexico. Seeing a snake in its native habitat would be cool.
Soon they arrived. The cenote looked like a large pond with a sharp rock face surrounding half of it. A jungle enveloped the rest. Josh dipped a toe in. It felt like the springtime lake water back home in Wisconsin. Josh and his mom slowly got into the clear water. Fish of varying sizes swam lazily among the rocks, their fins (鰭) barely moving.
After a little while, Josh heard a splash. The boys from the van were jumping into an open area roped off by floating objects. “Looks fun,” Josh’s mom said, “Why don’t you join them?” “But I don’t speak Spanish,” said Josh. “I don’t think you need to,” his mom said. “Maybe not.” Josh moved toward the edge and stepped out.
The sun was soon cooking his back, so Josh sat on a bench in the shade while trying to get up the courage to join the boys. Away from the water, it was quiet. Then Josh heard a rustling (沙沙声) in the brush.

Josh and his mom were on a road trip in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. On the way to swim in a cenote, Josh felt left out because he couldn’t understand Spanish spoken by the other tourists from Mexico City in the van. After arriving at the cenote, his mom encouraged him to join the Mexican boys' activities, but he hesitated due to the language barrier. When Josh was gathering courage in the shade, he heard a rustling in the bushes. Upon checking, he found a small python. This discovery attracted the Mexican boys. With his professional knowledge from a snake research report, Josh introduced the snake to the boys using simple words and gestures, successfully breaking the language barrier, making friends with them and achieving self-breakthrough.

He didn’t think he could join the boys because he couldn’t speak Spanish. / Josh wondered what the word “serpiente” meant when he heard the boy shout.
A jungle enveloped the rest, making the cenote look more mysterious. / Sitting on a bench in the shade, Josh tried to gather the courage to join the boys.
What a beautiful and clear cenote it is! / How exciting it is to see a python in its natural habitat!
Josh, a boy who had done a research report on snakes, recognized the small python immediately.
Among the rocks swam fish of varying sizes, their fins barely moving.
The clear water of the cenote was like a huge crystal, showing every detail of the underwater rocks.
The sun was so hot that it felt like his back was being cooked on a grill.
第一段提示句:His heart beat faster.
Looking excited, the other boys climbed out of the water and raced toward Josh.
第一段:His heart beat faster.请按 “紧张反应→探寻声源→发现真相” 的逻辑,梳理第一段写作思路,并完成英文续写:思路:→①Josh 因沙沙声产生的紧张表现(屏住呼吸、缓慢起身)→②Josh 小心翼翼探寻声音来源的动作(轻步靠近、拨开灌木)→③发现声源的具体事物(小蟒蛇)及 Josh 的情绪转变(紧张转兴奋,调动专业知识);
His heart beat faster. He held his breath, slowly standing up and inching toward the bush. With a trembling hand, he gently pushed aside the leaves. There, coiled on a root, was a small python—its scales glistened in the sun, and it looked harmless. Josh’s fear faded at once. Recalling his research, he knew it was a non-venomous local species. He squatted down quietly, not daring to disturb it, watching as it slithered slowly toward the shade.
第二段:Looking excited, the other boys climbed out of the water and raced toward Josh.请按 “男孩靠近→沟通尝试→互动升温” 的逻辑,梳理第二段写作思路,并完成英文续写:思路:→④男孩们靠近时的状态及提问(指着蟒蛇喊 “serpiente”,用手势询问)→⑤Josh 利用蛇类知识回应(用 “safe”“small” 等简单词,搭配手势讲解)→⑥双方互动升级(男孩们邀请 Josh 跳水,用简单英文交流);
Looking excited, the other boys climbed out of the water and raced toward Josh. “Serpiente! ¿Es peligroso?” one shouted, pointing at the python. Josh shook his head and smiled: “Safe. Small python.” He used his hands to mimic its slithering and said, “I did a report on snakes.” The boys’ eyes lit up. They gestured for him to join their game, and this time Josh nodded eagerly. Later, they played in the water, using simple words and gestures to communicate. Language didn’t matter anymore—curiosity and friendship connected them.
