18. How did the speaker’s grandfather die?
A. Due to a disease. B. During a charity event. C. Because of a plane crash.
19. Why did the speaker decide to skydive?
A. To help some patients.
B. To have fun with friends.
C. To overcome a fear of heights.
20. What does the speaker think was the best aspect about the skydive?
A. Falling from 2,000 meters.
B. Hearing stories about Alzheimer’s.
C. Raising a large amount of money.
A 19. A 20. B
M: If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be jumping out of a plane, I’d have laughed. I hated heights. It’s not the kind of thing I enjoy doing with friends! But something changed after my grandad passed away from Alzheimer’s. I wanted to do something meaningful that could help others affected by the same disease. So, I signed up for a charity skydive. I’d never even done a bake sale before!
We watched a safety video and we jumped from 4,000 meters. The free fall lasted for one minute, and we dropped at 200 kilometers per hour. I worked out that meant I fell roughly 3,300 meters before the parachute opened.
It was peaceful. You’d expect panic, but instead I felt calm. Everything looked so small, and yet I felt part of something huge.
The great part? We raised £8,452 — the highest amount anyone in our area has ever raised for Alzheimer’s. But even better than the total was hearing people talk about their experience with this illness. So many had been through the same as my grandad.
I still don’t love heights, so I’ve not overcome that fear. But I’ve learned that sometimes, doing something scary opens doors — and hearts.

In the mid-20th century, maps of the world showed continents surrounded by vast, featureless oceans. Beneath the waves, the ocean floor was largely unknown. That all changed thanks to the work of Marie Tharp, a pioneering cartographer and geologist.
In the 1940s, few women were accepted in science. Tharp, however, was determined to make her mark. She partnered with oceanographer Bruce Heezen, who collected sonar (声呐) data from ships that crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The data was just a string of numbers and graphs — without someone to translate it into a visual format, it was difficult to interpret. That was where Tharp came in. She began plotting thousands of data points, a painstaking process that required a mix of mathematical skill and artistic intuition.
In the process of her mapping, Tharp discovered the central valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a place where the ocean floor was pulling apart. This was exactly the kind of evidence that could support the controversial (争议的) theory of continental drift, which was largely dismissed by the scientific community at the time.
Convincing the scientific community would prove difficult, since many geologists had long believed that the ocean floor was flat and featureless. Tharp and Heezen turned to art to create visual representations of the ocean floor. This produced stunning maps that brought Tharp’s findings to life in a way that no scientific paper could. The beauty of these maps captured the imaginations of scientists and the public alike. Tharp’s maps, and the evidence they provided, became a cornerstone of the modern understanding of geology. Her work proved that the ocean floor was not static (静态的) but a dynamic, changing landscape.
For many years, Tharp’s contributions were overshadowed by her male colleagues — it was Bruce Heezen’s name that often appeared on scientific papers. Tharp worked behind the scenes, receiving little recognition for her groundbreaking work.
Today, satellite and sonar technology enable us to map the ocean floor with incredible precision, but none of this would have been possible without Tharp’s pioneering efforts.
24. What underlying reason motivated Tharp’s commitment to science?
A. A request from Heezen. B. A need to store sonar data.
C. A belief in continental drift. D. A desire to establish herself.
25. Why was Tharp’s discovery of the central valley significant?
A. It backed a then-dismissed theory.
B. It showed sonar data was unreliable.
C. It confirmed the ocean floor was flat.
D. It questioned a once-popular technology.
26. How did Tharp and Heezen make Tharp’s findings widely accepted?
A. By giving public lectures.
B. By visualizing data points.
C. By consulting geology experts.
D By publishing scientific papers.
27. How was Tharp’s work treated by her contemporaries?
A. It was credited to others.
B. It was viewed as accidental.
C. It was briefly acknowledged.
D. It was ignored as lacking evidence.
D 25. A 26. B 27. A
根据第二段中“In the 1940s, few women were accepted in science. Tharp, however, was determined to make her mark. (在20世纪40年代,很少有女性被科学界接受。然而, Tharp决心要留下自己的印记)”可知,想要确立自身地位的愿望促使Tharp投身于科学事业。故选D。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In the process of her mapping, Tharp discovered the central valley of the Mid-AtlanticRidge, a place where the ocean floor was pulling apart. This was exactly the kind of evidence that could support the controversial (争议的) theory of continental drift, which was largely dismissed by the scientific community at the time.(在绘制地图的过程中,萨普发现了大西洋中脊的中央山谷,在那里海底正在分裂。这正是能支持有争议的大陆漂移理论的证据,该理论在当时基本上被科学界所忽视)”可知,Tharp关于中央山谷的发现之所以重要是因为它为一个争议的理论提供了证据。故选A。
根据第四段中“Tharp and Heezen turned to art to create visual representations of the ocean floor. This produced stunning maps that brought Tharp’s findings to life in a way that no scientific paper could. The beauty of these maps captured the imaginations of scientists and the public alike. Tharp’s maps, and the evidence they provided, became a cornerstone of the modern understanding of geology.(Tharp和Heezen转向艺术来创造海底的视觉表现。这产生了令人惊叹的地图,以一种任何科学论文都无法做到的方式,使萨普的发现栩栩如生。这些地图的美丽俘获了科学家和公众的想象力。萨普的地图和它们提供的证据,成为现代地质学理解的基石)”可知,Tharp and Heezen通过让数据可视化,使得Tharp的发现被广泛接受。故选B。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“For many years, Tharp’s contributions were overshadowed by her male colleagues — it was Bruce Heezen’s name that often appeared on scientific papers. C
Seed libraries emerged as a revolutionary concept nearly a generation ago. The earliest example is BASIL, the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library. In 2000, University of CaliforniaBerkeley closed its campus farm to make room for research into genetically modified corn. This left the farm's collection of seeds homeless. Activists persuaded the Berkeley EcologyCenter to sponsor a lending library that would make the seeds available to local gardeners, who in turn would harvest and return seeds from the crops they grew to make possible the next year’s distribution.
From there, the seed library concept took off, spreading throughout all 50 states. Not only do seed libraries offer customers a free start in gardening, they can also make available seeds adapted to local growing conditions. Garden retailers (零售商) tend to stock nationally distributed lines of best-selling seeds that are chosen for their ability to grow over a broad area. A seed library, which isn’t driven by the need for profit, can focus on what performs best in the local soils and climate.
Besides distributing seeds, seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. This is why the vegetable, fruit and flower varieties that seed libraries distribute are typically open pollinated(授粉). That is, when pollinated naturally by insects, birds, or wind, the plants bear seeds that produce a new generation closely resembling the parents. Hybrids, the mainstay of conventional seed producers, do not “come true” in this fashion, and so they’re avoided by most seed libraries.
This has a couple of significant impacts. First, seed libraries tend to emphasize old-fashioned, heirloom (原种) plant varieties that originated before the modern emphasis on hybrid fruits and vegetables. In this way, seed libraries play a significant part in helping to keep such heirlooms available to gardeners. Then, because gardeners typically save seed from the stronger and more fruitful samples, they tend to preserve and reproduce the best adapted individuals. This practice encourages the gradual evolution of an ever-more locally adapted species. In this way, seed libraries are becoming ever more relevant to the needs of gardeners.
28. What distinguishes seed libraries from garden retailers?
A. They focus on locally adapted seeds. B. They offer seeds at a lower price.
C. They prioritize profit over sustainability. D. They distribute best-selling seeds.
29. What is stressed about open-pollinated plants in paragraph 3?
A. Their high output. B. Their distinct appearance.
C. Their rich varieties. D. Their biological advantages.
30. What is one important role of seed libraries?
A. Promoting the study of hybrid fruits and vegetables.
B. Ensuring the availability of heirloom plant varieties.
C. Making efforts to develop entirely new plant species.
D. Encouraging gardeners to change traditional methods.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Gardeners Starve for Best Seeds B. The Rise and Fall of Seed Libraries
C. Seed Libraries Help Gardening Grow D. The Future of Hybrid-plant Gardening
A 29. D 30. B 31. C
根据第二段“Not only do seed libraries offer customers a free start in gardening, they can also make available seeds adapted to local growing conditions. Garden retailers (零售商) tend to stock nationally distributed lines of best-selling seeds that are chosen for their ability to grow over a broad area. A seed library, which isn’t driven by the need for profit, can focus on what performs best in the local soils and climate.(种子图书馆不仅为顾客提供免费的园艺入门机会,还能提供适合当地生长条件的种子。园艺零售商往往会储备在全国范围内销售的畅销种子系列,这些种子是因其在广泛地区生长的能力而被挑选出来的。种子图书馆不受利润需求的驱动,能够专注于在当地土壤和气候条件下表现最佳的种子。)”可知,种子图书馆与园艺零售商的区别在于种子图书馆专注于当地适应的种子。故选A。
根据第三段“Besides distributing seeds, seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season. This is why the vegetable, fruit and flower varieties that seed libraries distribute are typically open pollinated (授粉). That is, when pollinated naturally by insects, birds, or wind, the plants bear seeds that produce a new generation closely resembling the parents. Hybrids, the mainstay of conventional seed producers, do not “come true” in this fashion, and so they’re avoided by most seed libraries.(除了分发种子,种子图书馆还鼓励顾客保存种子,以便在生长季节结束时能够归还种子。
根据第四段“First, seed libraries tend to emphasize old-fashioned, heirloom (原种) plant varieties that originated before the modern emphasis on hybrid fruits and vegetables. In this way, seed libraries play a significant part in helping to keep such heirlooms available to gardeners.(首先,种子图书馆倾向于强调那些在现代重视杂交水果和蔬菜之前就存在的老式原种植物品种。
D
Distraction is often said to be the major cognitive (认知的) crisis of our time. In a recent article in The Atlantic, Rose Horowitch noted that “university students have trouble staying focused on even a poem”, and many American middle and high schools have shifted from literary texts to shorter passages.
Actually, accusations of declining attention are nothing new in modernity. Even in the early 20th century, Ezra Pound observed a shift from poetry to prose (散文), explaining it as a result of readers’ inability to engage with the linguistic complexity of poetry. Over the decades, similar complaints about attention have continued.
Yet, Horowitch suggests that rather than a loss of reading ability, we may be witnessing a shift in consumption habits. Students now view reading books much like listening to old record albums — outdated. Meanwhile, the popularity of audiobooks continues to grow. This suggests that the issue is not an inability to read long novels but rather a shift in what people value. “Students can still read books,” Horowitch wrote. “They’re just choosing not to.”
This raises a deeper question: What kind of attention do we truly need, and why? Psychologists distinguish between focused attention and broader attention. In the famous Invisible Gorilla Experiment, participants counting basketball passes failed to notice a person in a gorilla suit dancing in the background. A wider focus, in contrast, may engage different cognitive skills and offer unique benefits.
Could the younger generation be developing valuable attention modes we fail to recognize? What of the rapid, quick-fire, written exchanges of instant messaging? The art of making short and clever statements in 140 or 280 characters? What about the skills and quick reactions needed in video games? These new ways of engaging with content challenge us to rethink — with history as our guide — how we might approach long-form culture in fresh and flexible ways.
32. What does the underlined word “accusations” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Criticisms. B. Origins. C. Trends. D. Indicators.
33. What does the increase of audiobook listeners imply according to Horowitch?
A. Printed books are less accessible. B. Reading preferences have changed.
C. Digital reading devices are more popular. D. Modern people have limited reading time.
34. Why does the author mention the Invisible Gorilla Experiment in paragraph 4?
A. To display the difficulty of multitasking.
B. To illustrate the limitation of focused attention.
C. To prove the wide presence of distraction in daily life.
D. To stress the importance of cognitive flexibility in sports.
35. What will probably be discussed next?
A. More valuable lessons taught by history. B. Challenges facing the young generation.
C. The impact of technology on literacy skills. D. Strategies for book reading in the digital age.
A 33. B 34. B 35. D
故选A项。
根据第三段“Yet, Horowitch suggests that rather than a loss of reading ability, we may be witnessing a shift in consumption habits. Students now view reading books much like listening to old record albums — outdated. Meanwhile, the popularity of audiobooks continues to grow. This suggests that the issue is not an inability to read long novels but rather a shift in what people value. “Students can still read books,” Horowitch wrote. “They’re just choosing not to.”(然而,霍洛维奇认为,我们可能正在目睹消费习惯的转变,而不是阅读能力的丧失。现在的学生认为读书就像听老唱片一样——过时了。与此同时,有声书的受欢迎程度也在持续增长。这表明,问题不在于无法阅读长篇小说,而在于人们的价值观发生了转变。“学生们仍然可以读书,”霍洛维奇写道。“他们只是选择不这么做。”)”可知,有声书听众的增加意味着阅读偏好已经改变。故选B项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This raises a deeper question: What kind of attention do we truly need, and why? Psychologists distinguish between focused attention and broader attention. In the famous Invisible Gorilla Experiment, participants counting basketball passes failed to notice a person in a gorilla suit dancing in the background. A wider focus, in contrast, may engage different cognitive skills and offer unique benefits.(这就提出了一个更深层次的问题:我们真正需要什么样的关注,为什么?心理学家区分了集中注意力和广泛注意力。在著名的“看不见的大猩猩实验”中,计算篮球传球次数的参与者没有注意到背景中有一个穿着大猩猩服装的人在跳舞。相比之下,更广泛的关注可能涉及不同的认知技能,并提供独特的好处)”可知,本段提到隐形大猩猩实验是为了说明专注注意力的局限性,即过于集中注意力可能导致忽略其他重要信息。故选B项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Could the younger generation be developing valuable attention modes we fail to recognize? What of the rapid, quick-fire, written exchanges of instant messaging? The art of making short and clever statements in 140 or 280 characters? What about the skills and quick reactions needed in video games? These new ways of engaging with content challenge us to rethink—with history as our guide—how we might approach long-form culture in fresh and flexible ways.(年轻一代是否正在发展有价值的注意力模式,而我们却没有意识到?

根据上文“Navigating life transitions (过渡) can be both thrilling and overwhelming. Whether it’s starting a new job, or moving to a new city, setting goals and planning effectively can make these transitions smoother.(应对人生过渡期既可能令人兴奋,也可能让人不知所措。无论是开始一份新工作,还是搬到一个新城市,设定目标和有效规划都能让这些过渡更顺利。)”以及下文“This involves not just identifying what you want to achieve, but also understanding why these goals are important to you.(这不仅包括明确你想要实现什么,还包括理解为什么这些目标对你很重要。)” B选项“The first step to making this happen is to clearly define your goals.(实现这一点的第一步是清晰地定义你的目标。)”
根据上文“Once your goals are defined, the next step is to break them down into smaller, actionable steps.(一旦你的目标确定了,下一步就是把它们分解成更小的、可执行的步骤。)”以及下文“For instance, if your goal is to excel in a new job, you might start by setting smaller objectives such as learning the company culture, building relationships with colleagues, and mastering the specific skills required for your role. By focusing on these smaller tasks, you can build up steam and gradually work towards your larger goal.(例如,如果你的目标是在新工作中表现出色,你可以从设定更小的目标开始,比如了解公司文化、与同事建立关系、掌握工作所需的特定技能。通过专注于这些更小的任务,你可以逐步积累动力,朝着更大的目标前进。)”可知,此空需解释“将目标分解为小步骤”的作用,衔接上文做法与下文举例。D选项“This can make the process feel less overwhelming and more achievable.(这能让这个过程感觉不那么令人不知所措,也更易实现。)”
根据下文“Life is unpredictable, and even the best-laid plans can encounter unexpected obstacles. By being adaptable and open to change, you can navigate these challenges more effectively. This might involve revisiting and adjusting your goals as needed, or finding alternative ways to achieve them.(生活是不可预测的,即使是最周密的计划也可能遇到意想不到的障碍。通过保持适应性和对变化的开放态度,你可以更有效地应对这些挑战。这可能包括根据需要重新审视和调整目标,或者寻找实现目标的其他方法。)”可知,本段围绕“调整计划以应对变化”展开,此空应作为段落开头,点明核心观点,与前文“设定目标、分解目标”的步骤形成补充。A选项“Being able to adapt your plans matters just as much, though.(不过,能够调整你的计划也同样重要。)” 故选A项。
根据上文“Another important aspect of goal setting and planning is to regularly review and reflect on your progress.(目标设定和规划的另一个重要方面是定期回顾和反思你的进展。)”以及下文“By taking the time to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, you can build confidence and maintain a positive outlook. Additionally, reflecting on your experiences can provide valuable insights and lessons that can inform your future goals and plans.(通过花时间庆祝你的成就,无论大小,你都能建立信心,保持积极的心态。此外,反思你的经历可以提供有价值的见解和经验,为你未来的目标和计划提供参考。)”可知,此空需概括“定期回顾反思”的作用,衔接上文做法与下文具体好处。E选项“This helps you stay focused, motivated, and aware of adjustments needed.(这有助于你保持专注和动力,并意识到需要做出的调整。)”
根据上文“It’s also essential to seek support from others during times of transition. Whether it’s friends, family, or professional networks, having a strong support system can provide encouragement, advice, and a sense of community. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help when you need it.(在过渡期寻求他人的支持也很重要。无论是朋友、家人还是专业人脉,强大的支持系统都能提供鼓励、建议和社群归属感。当你需要帮助时,不要害怕伸出援手。)”可知,此空需进一步说明“寻求他人支持”的具体意义,尤其是“分享目标计划”与“获得支持”的关联。G选项“Sharing your goals and plans with others creates accountability that keeps you motivated.(与他人分享你的目标和计划会产生责任感,让你保持动力。)”

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!" Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up. More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.

D. By publishing scientific papers.
27. How was Tharp’s work treated by her contemporaries?
A. It was credited to others.
B. It was viewed as accidental.
C. It was briefly acknowledged.
D. It was ignored as lacking evidence.

Besides distributing seeds seed libraries also encourage seed saving among their customers, so that the loans can be repaid at the end of the growing season.
D Encouraging gardeners to change traditional methods.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Gardeners Starve for Best Seeds B. The Rise and Fall of Seed Libraries
C. Seed Libraries Help Gardening Grow D. The Future of Hybrid-plant Gardening

35 What will probably be discussed next?
A. More valuable lessons taught by history. B. Challenges facing the young generation.
