When summer came along, my friend Neil suggested we ride our bicycles 80 miles from Saskatoon to Lake Diefenbaker for the official opening of the Gardiner Dam. He called this adventure our “Big Project”. It took some effort to get our parents’ approval. But after promising to be careful and make calls home from every town we passed through, we finally got their permission. Back then Neil was 13 and I was 12.
We set off for our big adventure. I had a borrowed three-speed bicycle, 5 dollars in my pocket, a large water bottle, and a cotton sleeping bag tied to a simple carrier. A few hours into the trip, excitement rushed over us as we sped down a mile-long hill at the end of the newly built Blackstrap Lake. We held on tightly, going faster on two wheels than we ever thought possible. It was a lot less fun when we had to climb up the other side of the valley. We learned the simple truth of the prairies (大草原): “what goes down must come up”!
Hours later we were in the middle of nowhere. Our water was gone, my front tire (轮胎) was flat, and we were walking under the huge prairie sky. The highway stretched on in front of us. We had been walking for what seemed like hours when a huge yellow Department of Highways truck pulled up.
“You boys need a ride?” the driver asked.
“Yes, we do,” we replied.
Seconds later, two workers threw our bikes up into the truck and we were off — five people squeezed (挤入) onto a bench designed for three. We told the men our story and they thought it quite amusing. Ten minutes later, we were dropped off at the Kenaston garage, where I got my tire fixed for 50 cents. Soon enough, we were back on the road!
The sun was setting as we approached the small town of Hawarden. Night was coming and we cycled the town looking for a place to sleep under the stars.

英文:My 13-year-old friend Neil and I, who was 12, proposed a "Big Project" — riding bicycles 80 miles from Saskatoon to Lake Diefenbaker for the official opening of the Gardiner Dam. They got their parents' approval after promising to be safe and set off with simple equipment. During the trip, they experienced the excitement of speeding down a hill, the difficulty of climbing up, and fell into trouble of running out of water and having a flat front tire in the depths of the prairie. Fortunately, they got a ride from a highway truck driver and workers. After spending 50 cents fixing the tire at the Kenaston garage, they continued their journey. They arrived at the small town of Hawarden at sunset and looked for a campsite, ready to enter the subsequent adventure.
