“Thanksgiving?” Nora guessed.
“Try again,” I said.
“Apple pie?” Nora said.
“No!” I laughed.
“I don’t know,” Nora said.
“I’m thinking of forks,” I told her.
“Why forks?” Nora asked.
“Because I’m thankful for them,” I said. “Without forks, it would be hard to eat food.”
“But we should be thankful for the big things, such as my friends and my family,” Nora said.
“I’m thankful for all those things,” I said. “I’m just saying that the little things matter too.”
“Let’s ask Grandma what she thinks. She’s in the dining room,” I said.
“Grandma?” Nora said. “What are you most thankful for?”
“I’m so thankful for my family,” she said, putting us into her arms.
I just smiled. “Me too!” Then I added, “And I’m thankful for forks.”
Grandma laughed as she picked up a dish. “Oh, yes, forks make eating easier! I’m also thankful for my new glasses. Now you aren’t fuzzy (模糊的) when I look at you.” We all laughed.
We found Aunt Gina in the family room. She lowered herself into a big comfortable chair. Her belly (腹部) was huge because she was going to have her first baby soon.

Aunt Gina touched her belly and smiled. “New adventures,” she said easily.

I laughed. Aunt Gina was thankful for the little things too. “What about forks?” I asked.

“I’m loving all this gratitude (感激),” Dad said as he came into the room.
“Dad, what are you thankful for?” I asked.
“I’m thankful I’ve got two helpers to tell everyone the food is ready,” he said.
Nora and I looked at each other. “The food is ready!” We were excited to tell everyone.
Before we eat, our family always say what they’re thankful for. This time, I talked about my family.
Then I proudly held up my fork and said, “I am also thankful for forks.”
At last, it was Nora’s turn. I was worried about her answers.

Are flying cars running through the air? If they are, that future is almost here. “I think it’s going to happen and hopefully much, much faster,” said Sebastian Thrun in 2021. At that time, his company Kitty Hawk Corporation was working on developing a flying car. Its name is eVTOL, or Electronic Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle.
Unluckily, Kitty Hawk Corporation was closed in 2022. But some other companies are still working on eVTOLs. Most of the flying cars look like drones (无人机). For example, the company Aska has built one called A5. The A5 still has to go through many tests, but some people are ordering (订购) one for $789,000. That’s more than twice the cost of a house in the United States.
“Flying to work sounds unbelievable. However, if it comes true, there will never be traffic jam (交通堵塞) again, because the sky is very large,” says Thrun. He also thinks eVTOLs could be greener than ordinary cars. “We go much faster, so we depend on less energy,” he says.
First of all, they are too expensive to buy. Some companies are developing them as air taxis so that people could pay to ride from time to time.
Another problem with flying cars is safety. Accidents (事故) in the air are dangerous to anyone in the air and on the ground. To make eVTOLs safer, many developers are trying their best to make them self-flying—no drivers needed. What’s worse, flying cars need more space to lift up and down like planes. Finding places to put these flying cars could be difficult in cities. But maybe some could go to the top of buildings.
Finally, no one wants to live beside the space because of the noise. Moreover, people may not want eVTOLs to cover their view of the sky. Some people think that eVTOLs run mainly on batteries (电池), so they are much quieter.
34. Why does the writer talk about Thrun’s company at the beginning of the passage?
A. To give an example of successful flying cars.
B. To show developing flying cars isn’t smooth.
C. To tell the story of the development of the company.
D. To tell how much buyers will spend on flying cars.
35. According to Thrun, which of the following is the good point about flying cars?
A. They can carry more people than buses. B. They run on batteries and are quieter.
C. They need no drivers and less space. D. They can make use of the large sky.
36. What may many developers suggest doing to make eVTOLs safer?
A. Using less energy. B. Developing them as air taxis.
C. Making them self-flying. D. Placing them on top of the buildings.
37. The following sentence can best be put at the beginning of ________.
Today, there are still many problems about flying cars to deal with.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5

Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. When she was a little girl, she loved animals very much. Once, she even stayed in a henhouse for hours just to watch how a hen laid (下蛋) an egg. Her parents were happy to see her love for nature and gave her a toy chimpanzee (黑猩猩) named Jubilee. This toy made Jane dream of working with animals one day.
When Jane grew up, she went to Africa (非洲) to study chimpanzees. At first, the chimpanzees were scared of her. They ran away when they saw her. But Jane didn’t give up. She sat quietly in the forest every day, watching them from far away. Slowly, the chimpanzees came close to her. She even gave them names like David and Goliath.
Jane found many amazing things about chimpanzees. She saw that they used sticks to get insects to eat. Before that, people thought only humans could use tools. She also saw that chimpanzees loved their families. Mothers took good care of their babies, and chimpanzees played together like children.
Later, Jane wanted to tell the world about chimpanzees. She wrote books and gave talks. She wanted people to know that chimpanzees are smart and need our help. Many forests where chimpanzees lived were cut down. Jane started groups to protect these forests and chimpanzees.
Even when Jane was over 90 years old, she still worked hard for animals. She traveled around the world, telling kids to love nature. She said, “Every individual (个体) matters. Every individual has a role to play.” Jane Goodall’s love for animals teaches us to care for our planet.

Paragraph 5
【答案】34. B 35. D 36. C 37. C
