You’re walking down the street, thinking about your own business when a stranger passes by. He doesn’t say anything at all, but he gives you a smile. In a moment and almost unwillingly, you do the same thing. You just can’t help it and you catch his smile. For some unknown reason, when we see someone smile, we just can’t stop ourselves doing the same thing.
In honor of World Smile Day (the first Friday in October), it’s time we got real answers to this matter. Is smiling contagious (感染性的)?
Well, a study in the Trends in Cognitive Sciences journal gives the answer “yes”. As part of the research, social psychologists (心理学家) looked into why we often copy (模仿) people’s facial expressions when we talk to them.
Interestingly, one of the conclusions (结论) was that we “try on” the emotions (感情) of others when we are talking with them. So, for example, when a friend tells us some good news happily, we may unconsciously (无意识地) show the same emotion through our smile. In doing so, we are feeling and understanding their joy.
So the reason we smile back when someone smiles at us is that we want to feel the same way as that person. However, not everyone can do this. During the research, the psychologists find people with some diseases can’t copy others’ facial expressions. They know someone is smiling but they cannot smile back.
1.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?

C.The result of smiling back. D.An example of smiling back.

A.Because we want to talk with the person.
B.Because we are feeling the person’s joy.
C.Because we want the person to understand us.
D.Because we want to show we are clever.
3.What problem do people with some diseases have?
A.They can’t copy others’ smiles.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech (演讲) in front of class? Do you get really shy?
Shyness means feeling nervous or scared around others. Over 80% of middle school students feel afraid to be the centre of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.
It’s OK if it takes you some time to feel like yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes.
Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay the bill. Some fear to meet new people, so they seldom (极少) go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing anything you want to do, being shy isn’t a big problem. Some experts say shy people are quieter and cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.
You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to let good chances pass by just because of it! If you have to practice your spoken English, just do it. Don’t be afraid.

Sometimes we all get angry. Did you ever get so angry that you thought you were going to do anything terrible? Sometimes I get very angry with someone. It might be my little sister or my big brother, or even my pet dog or cat!
Last Friday, I helped my parents sweep the floor. When I was ready to have a rest, my little brother Tim threw some pieces of paper on the floor. What a mess! However, he thought it was funny. He even made a funny face. I became so angry and threw his favorite cup onto the floor, although I knew it was a terrible thing.
Tim began to cry. My mom let me sit down and said to me, “Nick, breaking things in anger is never a right way to solve a problem.” When Dad came home from work, he told me that I would have to use the money I got for my birthday to buy a new cup for Tim. How upset I was! Then Dad said to me, “Using words is always better than hitting or throwing. If you are angry with Tim, why don’t you tell him about your feelings? When you do bad things out of anger, you will always feel regretful for them. Then you will have to do something to make things right again. It also takes money and time. So think before you act!”

“It’s finally summer vacation!” Michael said, dropping the heavy bag on his bed. He was so excited because in one month, he would be spending a week at The Cottage (小屋). That’s what he always called his grandparents’ cottage — like it was the title of a story.
Michael lay on his bed and closed his eyes. He could almost smell the flowers in the forest and the trees near the lake. He could feel the cool wind coming off the water. He could even taste Grandma’s delicious cakes and play with Grandpa in the field. Oh, how he wished he were there right now!
Michael sat up and looked through his bag. Books and papers fell out onto the bed. Finally, he pulled out his drawing book. Then he searched his drawer and found his drawing pencils and an eraser. He smiled to himself. His parents never really understood his attachment to his grandparents’ cottage.

Just then, the phone rang. Michael heard his mum saying something on the phone. A few minutes later, Mum came into his room. “Grandma called,” she said.
Michael’s heart sank. “Oh no!” he thought. “Is anything going to stop my summer trip?”

The words “house” and “home” don’t mean the same in English. A house is a building with four walls and a roof. In most houses there are rooms for different activities. People can eat in the kitchen, sleep in the bedroom, wash in the bathroom and relax in the living room.
But a home is a house full of people with their favourite rooms. For example, my favourite room is my bedroom. It has all of my things in it. My mum likes reading in the comfortable armchair in the living room. Jasper, the cat, lies under her feet. My sister Sally spends a lot of time in the garden! It’s her favorite place. And my dad can cook really well so he’s usually in the kitchen.
When I am away from home, I sometimes feel homesick. I miss all my things, and everyday family activities. Our house is noisy in the morning before work or school. Then, when I get back in the evening, Jasper jumps on me with his dirty feet and there is a fantastic smell of my dad’s cooking.
So home is the people and animals living in a house, and the things in the room that are special to us. It’s the activities we do, our feelings and the relaxing environment. Confidence is very important in daily life. It can help you to develop a healthy attitude (态度). A study shows that the people who are more confident are much happier. They can have more chances to make themselves successful. Here are some suggestions about how to be more confident.
Speak loud. When you are not confident, you can’t do well in what you want to do. You speak in a voice so low that other people can hardly hear you. Try to speak loud enough so that people can hear you clearly. The high voice can help you become more confident.
Play sports. Physical exercise makes you tired but really relaxed. A strong body helps you be full of confidence.
Encourage yourself. Write down a list of things you did during the day to see how many things you have done well. Did you finish your homework? Did you tell a joke that made everybody laugh? Give yourself praise for the good things you’ve done.

On a cold evening in January, little Philip went upstairs and found the door closed. Outside the door of his mother’s bedroom, he stopped and listened. Although no one told him not to go in, he had a feeling that it would be wrong to do so. He was a little afraid with his heart beating fast, but at the same time, something told him to open the door. He opened it quietly and slowly. He stood for some time before going in. He was not afraid now, but he felt strange. Then, the little boy closed the door behind him.
________ Looking around it, the little boy went in the room gently and slowly. On the dressing table, Philip saw Mrs. Carey’s brushes and the hand mirror. There was a photo of him and also a photo of his father on the wall. He had often been in the room when his mother was not in it, but now it seemed different. There was something different in the chairs. The bed was made just like someone would sleep in it that night.
Philip opened a large cupboard (壁橱) full of dresses and then he went in. He took as many of them as he could in his arms and put his face in them. Then he opened the drawers (抽屉) filled with his mother’s things, and looked at them. Their smell was fresh and warm. The difference of the room left it, and it seemed to him that his mother had just gone out for a walk. She would be in any minute and would come upstairs to have a small cup of tea with him. And it seemed that he felt her kiss on his face. He just couldn’t believe it! He kept telling himself it was not true that he would never see her again. Feeling hopeless, he looked around the room again. However, it was true!
Finally, he climbed up on the bed and put his head on the pillow (枕头). He lay there warmly and quietly, full of sadness.

A.The reason for smiling back. B.Advice on smiling back.
C.The result of smiling back. D.An example of smiling back.
2.Why do we smile back when we see someone else smile?
A.Because we want to talk with the person.
B.Because we are feeling the person’s joy.
C.Because we want the person to understand us.
D.Because we want to show we are clever.
3.What problem do people with some diseases have?
A.They can’t copy others’ smiles.
B.They smile too much and can’t stop it.
C.They never smile and they are unhappy.
D.They can’t feel happy when others smile at them.
4.Which could be the best title for this passage?
A.Why is smiling contagious? B.What’s World Smile Day?
C.Why should we smile? D.Do you know how to smile?

But home is also the community. I often help neighbors and they look after Jasper when we are away. And sometimes there’s a big party with all the neighbors. That’s what is home for me.

Pick up a hobby. If you like singing, sing as much as you can. In some ways, a hobby can make you outstanding. And it will make you happy and confident.

Finally, he climbed up on the bed and put his head on the pillow (枕头). He lay there warmly and quietly, full of sadness.
