When Dr. Daniel Olaiya isn’t presenting Operation Ouch! on CBBC, he is working as a National Health Service doctor, specializing in anesthesiology (麻醉学). He is also a flight doctor, which means he works on air ambulances.
Olaiya’s interest in science didn’t start with school lessons. Instead, it grew from his love of science fiction. He was a big fan of superheroes, in particular the X-Men comics. His favourite character was Havok, who can release powerful energy, which Olaiya thought was really cool. Another hero that he admired was the film character Indiana Jones, an adventurous archaeologist and professor at a university. He used to dream of becoming “Indiana Jones” in his own way.
Becoming a doctor wasn’t always Olaiya’s dream, but by the end of secondary school, he viewed it as a career where he would deal with people, go on adventures and use his scientific knowledge, which was both enjoyable and challenging. Pre-medical studies were really difficult because there was a lot to study. He struggled with it, but when he started his degree at the University of Exeter, he says, “That was when the fun began.” He loved outdoor adventures and activities while he was studying there.
In 2016, Olaiya joined FameLab, a global science communication competition, to share scientific ideas with audience. He delivered a creative three-minute talk on the science of happiness. The next year, he participated again, despite arriving an hour late due to heavy traffic. The talk ended up being a success and Olaiya made it through to FameLab’s national final.
Science communication is still an important part of Olaiya’s job — he is now one of the presenters on Operation Ouch! on CBBC. His most important advice for any young doctor is to work really hard at school and “dive as deep as you can into the science and the human aspect, because you can’t have one without the other in medicine.”
24. What initially sparked Olaiya’s scientific interest?
A. Characters in science fiction. B. A global speech competition.
C. Formal classroom education. D. Medical training in university.
25. Why did Olaiya take part in FameLab?
A. To win its final prize. B. To better spread science.
C. To be a TV presenter. D. To show his medical skills.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Olaiya?
A. Reserved and talented. B. Independent and ambitious.
C. Warm-hearted and creative. D. Adventurous and determined.
27. What does Olaiya’s advice highlight?
A. All efforts will pay off one day. B. It is never too late to learn science.
C. Medicine needs humanity and science. D. Caring for patients overweighs skills.

Nearly a third of the Earth’s land area is covered by forests and they play an essential role in sustaining life on the planet. Home to more than 80% of the world’s land-based species, forests also protect our planet by slowing down climate change — but scientists aren’t sure by how much. Recently, a new space mission has been carried out to find out how much carbon is stored by Earth’s trees and how this is changing as forests are cut down.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store it in their trunks, roots and leaves. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps the sun’s heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, pushing up temperatures. Exactly how much carbon is taken out of the air is very hard to measure — but now, researchers believe that space-based observations could provide a solution to precisely measure these carbon stocks (储量) on a global scale.
The mission involves a space probe (探测器), which is a device without a pilot, called Biomass. The probe carried a radar — a piece of equipment that can scan through the top of the forest down to the floor. This state-of-the-art radar had never been sent to space before, but its design means it even can measure the trunks, branches and stems of trees in the world’s thickest and most remote rainforests.
The scans it makes will then be used to create detailed 3D maps of areas in Africa, Asia and South America. Professor Shaun Quegan from the University of Sheffield in England, the lead scientist, explained that the scans would allow researchers to weigh the carbon content of the world’s tropical forests from space and, crucially, work out how much these are changing over time.
Biomass was launched from French Guiana in South America. It is expected to fly 414 miles up and orbit the Earth for the next five years. The data gathered by the Biomass mission will contribute positively to global forest health.
28. Why is the forests’ role mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To appeal to people to protect rainforests.
B. To compare forests with other ecosystems.
C. To list the convenience provided by forests.
D. To show the motivation for the Biomass mission.
29. What is the Biomass space mission intended for?
A. Detecting forests’ carbon stocks. B. Mapping all continents on Earth.
C. Studying the greenhouse effect. D. Exploring new rainforest species.
30. What can we know about the Biomass probe?
A. It requires a pilot to operate. B. It can identify the number of trees.
C. It is fitted with advanced equipment. D. It can reach every corner of the world.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Global Forest Health Improved by Space Data.
B. New Radar Technology to Explore Forest Climate.
C. The Tropical Rainforests: The Defender of Earth’s Life.
D. The Biomass Space Device: A New Eye on Forest Carbon.

Exercising has many health benefits. Soon, it could help lower your electricity bill! Instead of spending hours charging your wearable devices, scientists from the United Kingdom have developed a nano device that generates electricity from running energy.
The flexible nanogenerator (纳米发电机), which turns some mechanical energy into electricity, could become as useful in creating clean energy as solar cells. A study published in Nano Energy showed it produces 1,000 milliwatts of power — a 140-fold increase over traditional 10-milliwatt nanogenerators.
“What’s really exciting is that our little device with high energy harvesting efficiency could one day rival the power of solar panels and could be used to run anything from self-powered sensors to smart home systems that run without ever needing a battery change,” explains Md Delowar Hussain, a researcher at the University of Surrey and lead author of the study.
Researchers have created a new nanogenerator that collects and turns the energy from everyday movements into electricity. It uses materials that become electrically charged when in contact. Think of how rubbing a balloon on someone’s hair makes it stick to each other because of static electricity (静电). Instead of one electrode (电极) passing energy by itself, the new device has a relay of workers who shift mechanical energy, like running, into electricity. Each electrode collects a charge and then passes it on to the next electrode. The accumulating charge creates more energy in a process known as the charge regeneration effect.
Hussain says the ultimate goal is to use these nanogenerators to capture and use energy from everyday movements, like your morning run, mechanical vibrations, ocean waves, or opening a door. “The key innovation with our nanogenerator is that we’ve enhanced the technology with 34 tiny energy collectors using a laser technique that can be scaled up for manufacture to increase energy efficiency further.” Hussain says.
For now, the researchers are working on launching a company that uses nanogenerators like the one in the study to create self-powered, harmless healthcare sensors. These devices could then expand to other sections of health technology.
32. What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Absorb. B. Balance. C. Reflect. D. Match.
33. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How the nanogenerator works. B. Why the device needs electrodes.
C. When static electricity works in balloons. D. What the charge regeneration effect is.
34. What’s the feature of nanogenerator?
A. It requires daily battery replacement. B. It mainly captures energy from sports.
C. It adopts efficiency-boosting technology. D. It is too expensive for mass production.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise a fitness product. B. To introduce a novel generator.
C. To show how to generate electricity. D. To explain the benefits of exercise.

“You’ve become quite an independent girl,” her father said tenderly. “Twelve years old today… Just remember the greatest gift you can give yourself is to feel love from those around you. I love you so much, Amelia. Happy birthday!” Amelia held back tears. “I love you too. Bye.” she said as she hung up.
Less than an hour before the scheduled meeting, Amelia was dressed in her uniform. She had been told not to eat before the meeting as her club members would bring snacks for the study session. Amelia would have preferred going to the dining hall, where she could have celebrated her birthday with dessert, but as a first-year student, she didn’t want to disappoint the upperclassmen. She walked alone across the bridge towards the library. The campus seemed empty of people she knew. After receiving messages from friends already waiting, she hurried to the library.
Inside, she found the study room. To her surprise, every club member and all her friends were there. The study session began differently. It was transformed into a game hosted by Jordan. He announced points for giving correct answers to various questions on the digital board and a mysterious prize for the winner. Turn after turn, the room was filled with excitement as the game progressed. Laughter erupted when Kite was required to “return to zero” as she was found cheating.
After about an hour, then came the last question of the night. “What planet holds the capital of the United Galaxy Union?” Amelia got the chance to answer. Staring at her notes, she desperately guessed, “Nexus?” A long pause followed. Jordan dramatically announced, “You are correct! Everyone, add up your points.” Amelia cheered. As she calculated her score, she noticed almost everyone had disappeared. Only Lucas, Leo, Angel, Mia, and Jordan remained. “Where is everyone?” Amelia asked, confused. Just then, Jordan signaled her to sit in a chair facing away from the door.

【67题答案】
【答案】
Hesitantly, she sat down, and lively sounds of a crowd erupted from behind her. As she turned, her eyes widened at the sight of her friends gathering around a birthday cake with twelve candles on it. Their chorus of “Happy Birthday” immediately brought tears to her eyes. When the song ended, she closed her tearful eyes, made a silent wish for more moments like this, and blew out all the candles in one breath. The room exploded in cheers. Jordan gently placed a paper crown on her head while Mia handed her the first slice of cake, their gestures filled with genuine affection.
With laughter and cheers around, her father’s words rang in her ears. “The greatest gift you can give yourself is to feel love from those around you,” he said. Now, surrounded by her friends’ beaming faces and joyful voices, Amelia finally understood what he meant. She realized that growing up wasn’t just about being independent — it was about opening your heart to receive others’ love. She felt a deep sense of gratitude for the wonderful people who gathered to celebrate this day with her, and knew that this was the most valuable birthday gift she could ever receive.
