Parents with high expectations of their children are nothing new to Chinese kids. However, people often dont realize that children also have expectations of their parents. What expectations do Chinese children have for parent⁃child relationships?
China Youth & Children Research Center did a survey on this topic in the United States, Japan, South Korea and China. It showed that 83.8% of Chinese children want to be friends with their parents. But the fact is different. Traditional Chinese values might be a reason. Respecting ones elders and the concept of hierarchy (等级观念) are preventing parents from becoming friends with their children.
Both parents and children should make efforts to create a good relationship in the family. As children, what can you do to create a pleasant environment at home and make friends with your parents? Here are some suggestions for you.
●Act like an adult. If you want your parents to render you more freedom, you should show them youre not a child. For example, learn to use self⁃control. Show them that you can manage your time well. Then you may get more freedom from your parents.
●Open your heart. An American psychologist (心理学家) Carl E. Pickhardt wrote in Psychology Today that sharing feelings with parents can lead to good changes, while not sharing them can cause misunderstandings.
●Care for your parents. Do something nice or helpful for your parents. For example, help them with some home chores, make gifts for them or teach them some computer skills. Their trust in you will grow.

There are far too many mysteries in this world that we have yet to discover. Some of them are hidden in the most unlikely places. 6. C
In a small town of Gryfino in Poland lies one of the worlds mysteries that have been known — a small group of pine trees.7. B From the bottom, these trees grow with a 90⁃degree bend northwards, but then go back to grow straight up into the sky.
According to the scientists, the pine trees there were planted around 1930.Though they are strange in shape, these trees are generally healthy.8. A Some even grow nearly 15.24 meters. Thats about the height of a five⁃story building.
9. E Some suppose that the special gravity (重力) in this area has caused the trees to bend northwards. But it seems that this guess isnt proper, because gravity only pulls things downwards and doesnt make them bend. Others guess that the heavy snowfall in the area weighed down the trees as they were small. However, if that is the case, how would they explain that the other trees are different in this area?
The most possible explanation is that local farmers shaped the trees when planting them then. During those times, it was common for farmers to shape their plants for special purposes.10. D The secret behind the tree is still waiting for us to discover.
A.Most of them are very tall.
B.These trees look strange in shape.

Dear David,
How is everything going? You asked me about Chinese family rules and values in your last letter. In my opinion, they are common beliefs 1. that/which family members should follow.
From a very young age, my parents told me to respect 2. the old and care for the young. Many traditional stories also told us how to be honest 3. and keep our promises. When people are in trouble, be there and help them. I enjoyed reading those stories and I was influenced by 4. what I read and heard. As I grew older, I came to understand the importance of family rules and values. I think we teenagers need to pass them on. 5. Are there any family rules and values like ours in your country? Please write to me soon.
Best wishes!
