FIRST HOLIDAYS WITH FRIENDS
Most of us want to go on holiday without our parents. We can choose where to go, what to do and who to go with. But are these holidays always fun? Read about Sophie, Fred and Chris.
Last summer, after our exams, I invited my friend Paula to go on holiday to Thailand with me. We flew to Bangkok and then took a taxi to Hua Hin. We were really tired when we got there, but we both wanted a swim, so we went to the beach. You can guess what happened! We lay on the beach and soon went to sleep. When we woke up TWO hours later, we were really hot and thirsty and red! Never again!
Sophie,16
My first holiday was a weekend in London with my friends Jim and Simon. We took a bus from my home. When we got there, I found my money wasn’t there! I think I lost it on the bus. Jim and Simon each gave me some money. We stayed at Jim’s aunt’s house and had a great weekend.
Fred, 13
My first trip was with my friend Tom. We went camping in a forest near our town. We didn’t want my parents to drive us, so we took a bus and then on foot. It was a long walk and it was raining! I put up the tent quickly, but all our things were wet. The next day, it was sunny. We dried our things and had a good time!

“Could I watch one show first?” I asked.
“No!” she answered angrily. “You watch TV all the time and never help out around the house! I can’t work all day and do housework all evening.”
“Well, I work all day at school, too! I’m just as tired as you are!” I shouted back.
Mom didn’t say anything and walked away quietly. For one week, she did no housework and I didn’t either. The floor became dirty, clothes were all over, and there were no clean dishes to use one morning, I couldn’t find a clean shirt for school and finally understood how hard my mom worked every day.
The next day, when Mom came home from work, she found the house clean and tidy. I had washed the dishes, swept the floor, and even walked the dog.

Seventeen-year-old James Dennehy has no arms. But he does not want anyone to feel sorry for him. He wants them to laugh! That is why he always tells jokes. He loves to make others happy. James lives a fulfilling (充实的) life. He says his strong toes (脚趾) help him. His sense of humor helps, too. In many ways, his life is like other teenagers’ lives.
James doesn’t need much help from his friends or parents. He can do many things without arms. He could use other parts of his body. So he uses his legs and feet. They work like arms and hands. He eats, writes, types, cooks, and brushes his teeth with his feet. He can even send text messages using his big toes. He has also learned how to drive a car. James is a good basketball player, too. One PE teacher liked his free throws so much that he made a video and showed it to his team.
James’ friends see him as just a friend. They do not think of him as disabled. They say he is a great boy with a great sense of humor. Once a little girl asked him why he has no arms. “I did not eat my vegetables when I was your age.” he joked. “So be sure to eat yours!”
James’ attitude (态度) is catching. He has lots of joy, and it passes on to others. His advice to other kids is: “Accept yourself. No one is the same as you. We are all special in our own ways. Be proud of your differences.”

Mothers are very special people. They not only give birth but they look after their children until they’re old enough to take care of themselves. Mothers don’t stop caring about their children even when they grow up. They want to know that they are healthy, happy and safe. Like humans, animals are doing the same. In some ways, they are like human mothers, but there are also some different ways they look after their offspring.
Does your mum drive you to school, your music lesson or sports practice? Can you imagine your mother carrying you and your brothers and sisters on her back all the time? That’s what a Surinam toad (苏里南蟾蜍) mum does. She carries as many as 100 babies on her back until they’re old enough to swim by themselves.
Does your mum tell you to tidy your room and make your bed? If you were an orange-utan (猩猩), your mum wouldn’t! Mother orang-utans from Indonesia are the only animal mothers who make a new bed for their babies every night. They collect fresh leaves and build their young beds high in the trees. Mums never let their babies out of their sight for the first two years. And after that, they keep them close until they’re six or seven years old. This is longer than any other animal.
The world can be a scary place when you’re young, even if you’re an alligator (短吻鳄). That’s why mother alligators carry their babies in their mouths when they move through water or other dangerous places. In the past, people thought the mother was eating her babies! But in fact, she was just keeping them safe.
These are just a few examples of animal mums. One thing is clear: without mums to care and protect their offspring, animals all over the world would be in danger!
12. What does the underlined word “offspring” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Mothers. B. Humans. C. Animals. D. Children.
13. What can we learn about mother orang-utans?
A. They tidy their baby rooms each night. B. They make new baby beds every day.
C. They build baby beds under big trees. D. They keep their babies close for ten years.
14. What do alligator mothers do to protect their babies?
A. Put their babies on their backs. B. Eat their enemies when in danger.
C. Keep their babies in their mouths. D. Avoid passing dangerous places.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Human babies. B. Special animals.
C. Animal mothers. D. Caring humans.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. C

【12题详解】

【13题详解】

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开篇先强调人类母亲的特殊性,随后通过“Like humans, animals are doing the same”过渡到动物母亲,接着具体介绍了苏里南蟾蜍、猩猩、短吻鳄三种动物妈妈照顾幼崽的方式,最后总结“without mums to care and protect their offspring, animals all over the world would be in danger”,核心围绕“动物母亲”展开。故选C。

James doesn’t need much help from his friends or parents. He can do many things without arms. He could use other parts of his body. So he uses his legs and feet. They work like arms and hands. He eats writes, types, cooks, and brushes his teeth with his feet. He can even send text messages using his big toes. He has also learned how to drive a car. James is a good basketball player, too.
