A beach cleanup brings people together to remove trash from a beach.Various organizations organize
the cleanups. They often work with local governments to properly deal with any trash that is collected.
My husband and I go to as many beach cleanups as we can.It is one of our favorite voluntary activities.
You might not think that picking up.trash sounds like fun.But cleaning up a beach, especially that
with lots of trash,is very rewarding.A beach cleanup is a good way to help the environment, get exercise
and meet new people. To clean so much trash might seem impossible on some beaches. But you can
accomplish a lot in just a few hours with other volunteers.By the time you are done, you will be
encouraged by the results.
My first time joining a beach cleanup was in Costa Rica. Our group walked 30 minutes to a small
beach called "Playa Basura",meaning "trash beach"in Spanish.A lot of trash washes up on the beach
there. The beach often iooks like it is covered with colorful rocks. But the rocks are just small pieces of
plastic. Most of the trash comes from other areas. It washes down rivers and into the ocean. Then the
waves carry the trash to Playa Basura.
Our group worked hard for about two hours and filled over 100 trash bags. The difference was
amazing. But every year the rainy season brings more trash to Playa Basura. So,it is fortunate that there
is a yearly cleanup at Playa Basura.Trash on other similar beaches won't end until people stop trash from
getting into the oceans. But every beach cleanup helps.
24.How does the author feel about a beach cleanup?

B.To call on more people to join beach cleanup.
C.To show her concern about the beach pollution.
D.To report on people's efforts in beach cleaning.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Beach Trash Cleanup
B.The Government's Fight with Trash
C.The Challenges from Ocean Trash
D.The Benefits of Beach Trash Cleanup

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely
contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is
the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules
require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in
contact (with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an
attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg,an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State
University in Salem,Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says,According to most calculations, race
walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories()per hour, which is
approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would
probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does,Dr.Norberg says.
According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step,
while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each
step.
As a result,she says,some of the injuries associated with running,such as runner's knee,are
uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles
and hips,so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact,
anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn
proper technique, she says.It takes some practice.
28.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A.They must run long distances.
B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules.
D.They are good at swinging their legs.
29.What advantage does race walking have over running?
A.It's more popular at the Olympics.
B.It's less challenging physically.
C.It's more effective in body building.
D.It's less likely to cause knee injuries.
30.What is Dr.Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A.Getting experts'opinions.
B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach.
D.Doing regular exercises.
31.Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking?
A.Favorable.
B.Objective.
C.Tolerant.
D.Concerned.
D
First impressions can be powerful. In less than a second,we make judgments about someone's
trustworthiness,attractiveness,and personality.
"The appearance of individuals generally leads to certain common assumptions ()We also
know that these assumptions can influence real-life behaviors.Physically attractive people generally
receive more positive treatment than less attractive individuals,"Marine Rougier,a researcher in Belgium,
said.In scientific circles, this is known as the "halo effect",and it shows that people rate attractive
individuals more favorably for personality and characteristics.
But in today's digital age, first impressions are often formed online, where photos can be changed
using digital tools like filters ()So,can we still trust our first impressions when images can be so
easily changed?
In a recent study,Rougier and her colleague,Jan De Houwer, showed participants photos of people
with different levels of attractiveness.Participants formed first impressions, but then were told that the
photos might have been edited to make the people look more or less attractive.Surprisingly, even after
learning this,many participants stuck to their first impressions.But in a follow-up experiment,when
participants were shown how easy it is to manage photos, they were much more likely to change their
minds.
4
This "halo-update effect"shows that first impressions are malleable. For example,if someone is at
first seen as confident and social due to their attractiveness, they may be reconsidered as less confident
once it comes to light that their photo was edited.
What does this mean for us?It suggests that we can challenge first impressions with new information.
So,if you've ever worried about leaving a bad first impression, don't stress too much-people's opinions
can change.Just be careful with editing your photos too much,as it could lead others to form an overly
positive view of your personal or professional image.
This research is a reminder that looks aren't everything, and people's understanding of us can keep
changing over time.Whether online or in person, the chance to change someone's first impression is
always there.
32.What does the "halo effect"feature?
A.Judging easily by appearances.
B.Benefiting from favorable comments.
C.Seeking opinions from attractive people.D.Applying common beliefs to individuals.
33.Which was key to the viewers'change in the judgement in the study?
A.Extra advice on photography.
B.A wide selection of digital tools.
C.The use of popular social media sites.
D.The clear example of image improvement.
34.What does the underlined word"malleable"in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Foolish.
B.Reliable.
C.Changeable.
D.Meaningful.
35.What advice on online image management does the author offer?
A.Avoid unrealistic processing.
B.Show more professional photos.
C.Take traditional views on beauty.
D.Add detailed comments on images.
第二节(5小题;每:小题2.5分,分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项小选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Cheer Someone Up
Everybody gets sad from time to time.36 Here are simple steps to help them heal and find
happiness.
Listen to them.Half of the time, sad or stressed people aren't really looking for an answer;they just
want to be heard and have a chance to vent ()Do you know why they're sad?Do they seem like
sharing their feelings with you?37 Give advice if it will be useful, but the main thing is that you
are letting them outlet to you.
Get face to face. For as great and easy technology makes life,it can also make everything a bit more
difficult. It's tempting to want to send your friend a nice message via text, but that probably won't do it.
38 Since so much of life is spent behind a screen now, paying a face-to-face visit really means
something.
Give them a gift. Can you remember a time when someone gave you a gift without an obligation
to do so?39 Giving a gift to someone can brighten their whole day, helping them understand
that the gesture of the gift is more important than the gift itself.
40 There are some people in the world who will benefit more from a day of sadness than
others. To those,it offers time for reflection,self-analysis,and refueling.Your friend may just need a bit
to gather their woes (and get back at it.If he or she requests this, respect it.It's not your duty to fix
them.In time,they'll fix themselves.
A.Throw them a beautiful card in the mail.
B.It's best to show you really care in person.
C.Know that sometimes people need to be sad.
D.However, cheering someone up is not difficult
E.How warm did you feel inside when it happened?
F.Pull up a chair and give them a shoulder to cry on.
G.In fact, offering your support might be more helpful.
