On April 27, seven La Salle students traveled to Oregon Episcopal School (OES) to attend the annual Oregon Girls Sports Leadership Summit (OGSLS), aiming to educate participants on leadership and prepare them to be leaders in their own communities. About 200 students were in attendance, coming from schools all over Oregon to spend a day at OES.
For freshman Ella Manson, the experiences OGSLS’s major speaker, Chantel Tremitiere, a former Women’s National Basketball Association(WNBA) athlete shared were the most impactful part of the event. She shared her views after years of playing professional basketball and the struggles she pushed through on her path to success. “She faced so many challenges in her life,” Manson said. “But she overcame them all and came out stronger.”
Following Tremitiere’s speech, students were dismissed into “breakout sessions”, where they engaged in an activity called “compass (指南针) points”. The results of the quiz they took pointed them towards what sort of leader they were: north, south, east, or west, named for the points of a compass. Each point corresponded to a certain set of characteristics in different types of leaders — the action leader, the brainstorming leader, the empathetic (有同理心的) leader or the analytical leader.
Freshman Tilden Babinec-Love found this activity to be the most useful. “Listening to other people talk about theirs, I’d think, ‘Oh, should I try to be more like that?’” Babinec-Love said. “Just listening to everyone’s different views was really cool.”
At last, students were dismissed to lunch, where they heard from the last speaker of the day, Sam Moore, a sports scientist, who specializes in the effects of female hormones on their performance and well- being as athletes. After Moore spoke, the students were made to enter a breakout room where they were grouped based on the characteristics most important to them. Tournament- style, the students narrowed down their options until they reached a “Final Four”, helping them define the qualities they should focus on the most.
Overall, the event was a success — it had a little something for everyone, regardless of their age, the sport they play or their past experiences with sports.
24.What does Ella Manson most probably think of Chantel Tremitiere?
A.Confident B.Strong-willed. C.Defensive. D.Warm-hearted.
25.What were the students asked to do in the activity “compass points”?
A.Take a test B.Analyze a leader. C.Fix a compass. D.Listen to a speech.
26.Why did Babinec-Love highly praise the activity?
A.It made her aware of her weakness. B.It improved her listening skills.
C.It gave her access to different cultures. D.It enabled her to learn from others.
27.What does the author imply in the text?
A.Leadership skills are formed in practices.
B.Being a leader should be every student’s focus.
C.The OGSLS’ activities are beneficial to students.
D.Leadership skills are the key to achieving success.

Around the world, farmland is increasingly overlapping with elephant habitats, often resulting in dangerous interactions as elephants roam over people’s crops. But in Kenya, after decades of investigation, inspired by local knowledge of elephants’ dislike of beehives, researchers have come up with a simple but ingenious solution to discourage elephants: strings of beehive fences. These buzzing (嗡嗡响的) barriers are offering a gentle but effective way of reducing fights between farmers and elephants.
The human-elephant conflict is a growing issue in several areas. In Kenya, where the population and demand for resources is growing, human-inhabited areas are increasingly overlapping with elephants’ ranges. Combined with the recovery of some elephant populations, this is leading to greater chance of conflicts between humans and these elephants. “Expansion of agricultural land, logging, urbanization, and getting smaller of elephant habitats are forcing elephants to make their way to human settlements in search of food and water,” says Greta Francesca Iori, an Ethiopian-Italian advisor on elephant conservation.
To prevent these conflicts, scientists and locals have tested a variety of solutions to prevent elephants, from electric fences, watchtowers to noise-makers, but using bees to scare away elephants has emerged as a particularly promising and efficient tool. In the early 2000s, ecologist Fritz Vollrath and Iain Douglas-Hamilton heard a folk story about how trees in certain areas were not damaged by elephants because they had beehives in them. Inspired by the tale, they began working and confirmed that elephants avoid wild beehives and even make a series of sounds and warnings to others to stay away.
Fritz Vollrath and Iain Douglas-Hamilton designed beehive fences. The fence goes all around a farm, with hives placed every 10 m between two posts. Attracted by natural attractants such as beeswax and lemongrass oil, African honeybees naturally multiply the beehives. Besides protecting crops, the fences produce honey for extra income and free farmers—often the front-line defenders—from risky nighttime guarding. And they are now spreading across the world, from Mozambique to Thailand.
28.What does the underlined word “ingenious” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Clever. B.Excusable. C.Uncertain. D.Challenging.
29.What is the main reason for elephants’ entry into human settlements?
A.Farmers attract them with crops. B.Climate change reduces their habitats.
C.Beehives frighten them away from forests. D.Human activities destroy their homes.
30.How did researchers develop the solution of using beehives?
A.After studying elephants’ eating habits. B.Through scientific proof of a folk story.
C.By copying Thailand’s elephant defense. D.Using high-tech sound warning systems.
31.What is the author’s attitude to the beehive-fence solution?
A.Skeptical. B.Tolerant. C.Dismissive. D.Approving.
D
I heard some good news recently. My 91-year-old grandfather called me to test his new hearing aid. For the first time in a long time, he could hear my voice. It thrilled us both.
I soon found out there was another reason why my grandparents were so happy — their new audiologist (听觉病矫治专家), Anna. Unlike the previous providers they’d been dealing with, Anna gave time and attention. Anna not only ensured the new hearing aid worked as it should, but also offered to go to my grandparents’ apartment to show them how to use it.
Such kindness might sound rare, but I’ve since started wondering: what if it’s more common than we think?
It started with some research that showed people often underestimate the willingness of strangers to engage with, or even befriend them. Then I came across a study that suggested news coverage of current affairs tends to be more negative than positive because humans tend to give negative events more attention.
Negative stories can attract our attention and prepare us for disappointment. But if we don’t engage with positive ones, they might lead us to be more critical of the world, more defensive (防御的) and less hopeful than we need to be.
So I think sometimes what we hear, see or even know might not be the whole picture. The truth might be hidden from us, requiring us to notice and discover it. We should start by asking ourselves whether we are focusing more on negative or positive stories, and whether we are letting negative news surround us. Maybe even paying more attention to good news, or paying more attention to sharing good news will help.
Anna’s attitude was remarkable. She went beyond the call of duty and, upon leaving, refused to accept anything but words as thanks.
Why not remind ourselves that, for all of the bad that’s in the world and in the news, behind the scenes, in people’s ordinary lives, lie untold stories of extraordinary good.
32. How was Anna different from previous audiologists?
A. She displayed more patience and honesty.
B. She offered her patients personal assistance.
C. She paid little attention to her patients’ needs.
D. She refused to accept payment for the hearing aid.
33. Why are news reports on current events usually more negative than positive?
A. To reveal the hard life in reality. B. To warn people of potential risks.
C. To attract audiences more effectively. D. To encourage people to seek out the truth.
34. What does the author suggest people do?
A. Share only positive news stories. B. Pay no attention to negative news.
C. Take advantage of others’ kindness. D. Maintain a positive attitude toward the world.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Avoid the bad. B. Display your kindness. C. Uncover the good. D. Prepare ourselves for the negative.

One day morning, my wife and I were in bed when a tree crashed into my house. I was asleep when I heard the crash and felt all the weight of the tree. When I woke up, it was already over me. I felt pain immediately and it wasn’t too long before my legs and my arm went numb (麻木).
The whole left side of my body felt like it was on fire. I was covered by the debris (残骸) of the tree from basically head to toe, and I couldn’t move a muscle. At first I thought it was a bad dream, then I realized it wasn’t, and I just started shouting for help.
The first set of responders, as a rescue team, arrived on the scene within 10 minutes after Sherri, my wife, made the phone call around 6 a.m.
The first responders were trying to get to know how I was laying and where I was facing, but they could barely hear me, because the only opening in the wall behind me was only about a softball size hole. I tried my best to get some fresh air through this small hole. It was probably 7 a.m. when they found out where my head was, and they were able to punch (凿) through the wall and pass an oxygen mask for me.
Still, my breathing was very labored. During that second hour, there were many times when I thought I was going to die. The breathing itself was so hard, and the pain was so huge that it nearly took my concentration off of breathing.
My wife and kids, who were safe on the ground, were worried. But at that time, I didn’t know anything going on besides my pain and the breathing. I was able to communicate with somebody there, but doing so would make breathing even more difficult. When I said it was too hard to hold on and I wanted to give it up, a voice said to me:

参考范文
【答案】Possible version one:
“We need you to keep fighting! Just concentrate on that breathing!” It was from one of the rescuers. His voice was firm and full of determination. I felt a glimmer of hope and mustered all my strength to focus on my breathing. With every ounce of willpower I had, I fought against the pain and the urge to give up. Minutes felt like hours, but I clung to his words, knowing that they were my lifeline. Hours later, I was finally rescued from the debris, and the rescue team immediately called an ambulance for me to send me to the hospital.
I was reunited with my family after leaving the hospital. The moment I saw my wife and kids, tears welled up in my eyes. We hugged tightly, as if we’d never let go. My children’s faces were filled with relief and joy, and my wife’s eyes were red from crying. I realized how precious life was and how lucky I was to be alive. From then on, every day became a gift, and I cherished every moment with my family, knowing that we had overcome a great hardship together.
Possible version two:
Possible version two:
“We need you to keep fighting! Just concentrate on that breathing!” It was my wife. Through the chaos and debris, her voice cut through, trembling yet resolute. I could picture her on the other side of the wall, tears streaming down her face. Her words were like a warm embrace, giving me the power to grit my teeth and battle the pain. I knew I couldn’t let her down and I just insisted in the hardest time. Hours later, I was finally rescued from the dark, and I was immediately sent to the hospital for further medical examinations.
I was reunited with my family after leaving the hospital. The joy on my children’s faces as they saw me walking through the door was overwhelming; it filled my heart with warmth and gratitude for being alive. We spent the evening together, sharing stories and laughter, cherishing every moment. This experience not only brought us closer but also taught us valuable lessons. It reminded us to appreciate each day, and even in the darkest time, there is still hope. Life goes on, and so do we, stronger and more united than ever before.

第二节:【答案】Possible version one:
