After some comfort from her parents that her brother would be alright, followed by some softly-spoken words and hugs for her teddy bear, Tess would feel better. This bear has been a help for the fourth-grader and it inspired her to write and self-publish a picture book called “The Worry-Free Bear”, which follows the journey of a young girl named Caroline with cancer and how a toy animal helps her through the difficult time and eventually become cancer-free. Tess wrote the piece during a writing workshop in school. At first, the journal exercise served simply as an emotional release for the young girl, but it has since taken on a life of its own. With the help of her teachers, Tess and her family launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce the book, buy small teddy bears to accompany it and distribute them to children’s hospitals and school libraries throughout the region. To date, they’ve received roughly $10,000 in donations. They plan to buy at least 500 books and toy animals and make a monetary donation to nationwide Children’s Hospital. Jana Holland, Tess’s third-grade teacher, was impressed by the emotions expressed in the story. “She wrote this book as treatment for herself without realizing it might be treatment for others to read it,” said Holland, who illustrated the published version. “What a mature way to handle a situation that is heartbreaking, that most people can’t even imagine. The book has a way of teaching understanding and how important it is to support each other.” For Tess, the message she hopes to deliver to children and family members reading her book is simple: “You can do hard things.” It’s something her main character, Caroline, says in the story, and the words have become a belief the Shorts hold onto throughout Sam’s illness. Most of all, Tess wants everyone reading her book to understand one thing: “It’s OK to worry.” 24. What inspired Tess to write a picture book? A. Her teddy bear’s role. B. Her teachers’ encouragement. C Her brother’s recovery. D. Her school’s writing workshop. 25. Which word best describes the Kickstarter campaign? A. Educational. B. Promotional. C. Charitable. D. Sustainable. 26. What does Holland think of the book? A. It needs better illustrations. B. It teaches medical knowledge. C. It shows youthful imagination. D. It comforts people in hard times. 27. What does Tess mainly want readers to learn? A. Seek help when necessary. B. Stay strong during illness. C. Accept negative emotions. D. Overcome fears with love. C A group of researchers analyzed data from 9,971 children participating in a long-term study. These kids were entering kindergarten in the United States from 2010 to 2011, and during kindergarten, their parents reported the frequency with which their children performed housework. Then, in the third grade, these children were given an investigation about their interest or ability in studies, social relationships, and life satisfaction, and they completed direct school-related assessments for reading, math, and science. The results showed that the frequency of housework in kindergarten was positively associated with a child’s idea of social, academic, and life satisfaction abilities in the third grade, independent of sex, family income, and parent education. Another study looked at children’s housework behavior and found the following: Most children in the study spent surprisingly little time helping around the house and did fewer tasks than they reported in interviews. The researchers found that offering the child an allowance in exchange for doing housework was not an effective encouragement and that children in families with access to paid home help tended to be less helpful than children in families without. The authors suggested that while most children are aware that their working parents need help, in some families, changeable and unclear expectations from parents negatively affect children’s participation in household work. So, what’s a parent to do? Get your two and three-year-old to help you mix in the kitchen. At four and five, get them to set the table, pass out small dishes or cookies to guests, and put their clothes in the washing machine. And by the time they are six, give them real housework: Feed the dog, sweep the floor, and, again, pick up the clothes and put them away. Each day, there should be a few things teenagers do around the house that benefit everyone. They can cook a dish for dinner, do the dishes and so on. This includes boys as well as girls. Doing this will result in resistance some of the time. And it will take a lot of parental energy. But it will pay off. Just like the studies have said. 28. What did the study show about children doing housework in kindergarten? A. They became more popular among classmates. B. They tended to feel more capable in later years. C. They showed a strong interest in school activities. D. They must balance housework and study in grade 3. 29. What might reduce children’s involvement in housework? A Lacking in home helpers. B. Insufficient monetary rewards. C. guaranteed family income. D. Conflicting parental demands. 30. What does the author suggest parents do about housework? A. Ask kids to repeat specific tasks. B. assign special housework by gender. C. Increase task complexity by age. D. Make kids choose housework freely. 31. Why did the author write the text? A. To clarify a clear goal. B. To illustrate an approach. C. To evaluate a research. D. To make a comparison. D In a study published earlier this year in Psychological Science, a team of researchers reported a link between spoken fluency and death risk. The group, led by Paolo Ghisetta of the University of Geneva, made use of data from the Berlin Aging Study. Between 1990 and 2009, investigators assessed the thinking abilities of more than 500 participants who were 70 years old or more when the study began. Specifically, the researchers measured their “sensory speed, event-based memory, spoken fluency, and spoken knowledge” All of the study’s participants have now passed away, and researchers can use the results to see if any of these measures are predictive of how long the participants lived. Somewhat surprisingly, out of the four thinking measures mentioned above, only one was related to decreased death risk: spoken fluency. Specifically, Ghisetta and his team found “an almost nine-year predicted difference in survival time between the study participants with high or low values on spoken fluency.” The study supports earlier research on this topic. In 2016, for example, researchers found an association between reading and living longer. They reported that participants who read books had a 23-month “survival advantage” compared to non-readers. But how much reading was necessary for such an association to be observed? The researchers said just 30 minutes a day was sufficient. But they stressed that the strongest association in this study was found for participants who primarily read books as opposed to newspapers and magazines. Why might reading fiction bring advantages not seen with reading factual material? One possibility is that the labor required to create a fictional world in one’s head, along with the effort required to keep track of who said what, and who knows what, can have beneficial thinking effects. Still, the development of one’s spoken fluency and the reading of fiction are not a cure-all that can magically stave off the effects of aging on the mind and body. But evidence is growing that specific thinking abilities and behaviors are associated with a lot of benefits, including a longer life. 32. What do we know about Ghisetta’s study? A. It lasted for a really long period of times. B. It involved more than a thousand people. C. It tracked participants from young to old. D. It focused on spoken fluency of the elderly. 33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning Ghisetta’s study? A. Its major limitations. B. Its supporting evidence. C. Its research method. D. Its significant findings. 34. Why is fiction more helpful than factual reading? A. It strengthens spoken fluency. B. It requires more thinking effort. C. It brings emotional relaxation. D. It improves event-based memory. 35. What does the underlined part “stave off” in the last paragraph mean? A. ignore. B. Assess. C. Prevent. D. Predict. How to stay focused while studying Focus is like a muscle: it tires if you use it too long. The brain’s front part, responsible for willpower, needs regular breaks to refill its fuel. Study for 50 minutes and then walk away. A five-minute walk, preferably outside, boosts blood flow and clears mental rubbish. ____36____ Your phone is a slot machine(自动售货机)in your pocket. Every buzz or flashing pictures causes a happy feeling that breaks the weak chain of concentration. ____37____ If that feels impossible, start with “flight mode+1-hour timer”; after four cycles, reward yourself with a 10-minute scroll. The key is to make distraction harder than studying itself. Multitasking is a lie. What feels like doing two things at once is actually the brain switching rapidly between tasks, eating extra sugar each time. ____38____ Close every tab that is not the one you are working on; turn the desk so it faces a blank wall. One task, one window, one goal — that is how deep focus is born. ____39____ Write tomorrow’s top three tasks on a sticky note the night before. Then divide the day into “focus blocks” of 90 minutes at most, with 15-minute recovery gaps. During a block, nothing else exists; during recovery, do something fun and totally unrelated. By 5 p.m. you will have spent four high-quality hours, not ten distracted ones. Finally, train your brain to recognize when it has wandered. The moment you notice yourself rereading the same line, silently say “back” and return to the text. ____40____ After a week, you will catch yourself earlier; after a month, the number of “backs” drops sharply. Soon you will find yourself reading faster and remembering more. A. Therefore, create a single-task battlefield. B. This simple action acts like a mental seat-belt. C. The earlier you start, the longer you can concentrate. D. When you return, your“focus container” is full again. E. Put it in another room, or at least inside a closed drawer. F. Even the brightest students admit that they check phones too often. G. Willpower disappears gradually as the day goes on, so treat focus like money: plan it. When I was in eighth grade, I had a math teacher named Mr Adams. During lively break times, while others were joking and sharing stories, Leo was usually found in his corner, absorbed in a book. It wasn’t that he disliked his classmates; it was the secret he carried like a heavy stone in his chest — he stuttered (口吃). The fear of his words getting unclear, of seeing impatience or mockery (嘲笑) in others’ eyes, built a “wall” around him. To his classmates, he was just the shy, perhaps slightly strange, new boy. When Mrs. Anderson announced the annual class speech competition that everyone had to take part in, Leo’s heart dropped. The thought of standing in front of the whole class made his hands turn cold. He spent sleepless nights imagining the disaster. He even considered pretending illness to avoid it, but a small, determined part of him wanted to be heard, to connect with others beyond the pages of his books. The frightening day arrived. One by one, confident students walked to the front, delivering their speeches on various topics with ease. With each name called, Leo’s anxiety grew. When his turn came, the walk to the front felt like a mile. The classroom was quiet, all eyes on him. He held his note cards tightly. As he hesitated, a few uncertain giggles (咯咯地笑) came from the back of the room. His face turned red. He opened his mouth, but only a weak, silent breath escaped. Fear set in. Just as he was about to apologize and run away, he looked up and met the eyes of Sarah, who sat in the front row. She wasn’t laughing. Instead, she offered a warm, friendly smile and a small, firm nod of encouragement. In that simple, quiet sign, Leo felt a bit of hope. Taking a deep breath, Leo looked at Sarah again and began to speak. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When Leo finished his speech, the classroom was completely silent for a moment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2025-2026学年第一学期高二期中学情调研测试 英语试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,每小题1. 5分,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1. 5分,满分7. 5分) 听下面5段对话。 6. His voice was trembling at first. The first few words were a struggle, each one a battle against the stubborn blockage in his throat. He focused on Sarah’s steady, friendly gaze, using it as an anchor. Slowly, as if pushing through a thick fog, his sentences started to flow more smoothly. He forgot the notes in his hand and simply began to share the story he had prepared about his grandfather — a story he truly loved. The stutter was still there, popping up occasionally, but Leo found the courage to pause, take a breath, and continue. When Leo finished his speech, the classroom was completely silent for a moment. Then, Sarah started clapping. It wasn’t loud or showy, but firm and sincere. Like a chain reaction, her clap was joined by another, and then another, until the entire room was filled with warm, genuine applause. Mrs. Anderson was smiling proudly. No one laughed at the pauses or the stumbles. In that ocean of acceptance, Leo felt the heavy stone in his chest finally disappeared. He had not just given a speech; he had found his voice. What a big, giant, beautiful city.
