Step III While-reading
(1) Read these two letters quickly and find Ben’s problems and who he turns to for help and the suggestions. Then complete the sentences with expressions from the passage(Finish Activity4 ).
(2) Ask some students to give the class the answers.
Ben’s problems: being disappointed with his teammate; telling his best friend that his teammate was to blame, just letting off steam; but his best friend telling everyone else what he’d said.
Agony Aunt’s suggestions: first, apologize to his teammate; then, talk to his friend; third, think about his own behavior.
(3) Ask students to give other advice to Ben. At the same time, we can learn more from them.
(4) Choose the best summary of the two letters (Finish Activity3). The answer is D.
(5) Read the two letters carefully and find V-ed forms.
Disappointed by his behavior, I said…
Embarrassed and ashamed, I can’t concentrate on anything.
Treated this way, you’re sure to feel hurt.
Approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.
Filled with anger, you tend to say whatever comes to your mind.
Step IV After-reading
Read these sentences with V-ed forms in these letters. Pay attention to their roles.
Learn some expressions: in a total mess, be crazy about, let down, let off steam, concentrate on, loose lips sink ships, apologize to somebody, mean doing something, resolve conflicts, move on, pull one’s weight, raise one’s concerns in a professional way, work out.
Step V Consolidation
After learning this part, ask some students to talk about their feelings and solutions to the problems they may face in daily life.
Then think when we use -ed form of verbs, especially as adverbial.
