At 66, Kent fondly recalled the magic of attending his first Louisiana State University (LSU) football game in 1968, where “The Golden Band from Tigerland” attracted him with their lively music and excellent performances. From that moment on, Kent held onto a dream: to one day march with the band.
As he neared retirement, Kent decided it was time to pursue this long-held dream. With enthusiasm, he shared his plans with his family: he was going back to school at LSU and trying out for the band.
The first step involved taking up the tuba (大号) again, an instrument he hadn’t played regularly in about fifty years. Not giving up, Kent committed to hours of practice, filling his neighborhood with the joyful sounds of his instrument as he prepared for the challenge ahead. He also made exercise a daily habit, including strength training and running to ensure he was ready for the demands of marching band life.
Soon, Kent entered LSU, starting a new chapter alongside students who were nearly five decades his junior. When the time for marching band tryouts arrived in early August, he gave it his all, eagerly awaiting the results to see if he could step onto the dream football field.
As the list was out Kent felt the excitement built. “There was a countdown in the Tuba room…30 seconds, 15 seconds, 10 seconds, and right at 7 pm, the marching band list came out,” he recalled. The joy was obvious as he learned he had made the band, becoming the oldest member by an impressive 41 years.
Last Saturday, Kent proudly took the field in his purple and gold uniform, tuba in hand. The stadium (体育场) was alive with music and cheers, including the voices of his loving wife and daughters, who were there to support him.
Surrounded by the lively atmosphere that attracted him as a child, Kent’s story serves as an inspiration for others. “People can use this as an example — your only failure is not trying,” he encourages. “If you don’t try, you won’t get there.”
4. What can we learn about Kent’s 1968 experience?
A. It was full of imagination. B. It disappointed him deeply.
C. It affected his school grades. D. It inspired his lifelong interest.
5. What can we know about Kent’s effort to achieve his goal?
A. It needed both musical and physical preparation.
B. It was supported by professional musicians.
C. It mainly involved memorizing old songs.
D. It attracted numerous seniors to join him.
6. How did Kent’s family support his pursuit?
A. By joining the band with him. B. By attending his performance.
C. By buying him a new instrument. D. By helping him train physically.
7. What does Kent’s story show?
A. Knowledge starts with practice. B. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. D. Every cloud has a silver lining.

Before becoming a therapist (治疗师), I had no idea what it meant to “hold space” for somebody. Now, the term is widespread on social media and serves as the foundation of my work. Holding space is the backbone of supportive relationships and bridges the gap between two people when one person is in hardship.
The term “holding space”was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blog post, Plett described holding space as “the act of being fully present with someone else, without judgment or distraction, so that the person can share their experiences and perspectives. This looks like creating a safe, accepting environment, engaging in attentive listening and offering non-judgmental support.” Research shows that holding space can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance relationships, and improve mental health and well-being.
Holding space is no easy task. It requires the patience to be calm, to delay a response even when someone has upset or frustrated you. It also requires radical acceptance, a release of your ideas abou who the other person should or can be, and openness and honesty about who they actually are.
These skills require us to know ourselves as well. “Holding space is a form of attunement (调和) or the ability to be aware of our own state of mind and body while also tuning in and connecting to another person,” the University of Pennsylvania professor Edward Brodkin said. But “holding space” doesn’t ask us to honor others’ feelings without comment or response. Instead it is a baseline of love and acceptance from which a deeper, more genuine connection can grow.
As Brodkin puts it, “It’s a way of investing in your relationship, developing it and enabling it to grow. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to be able to see them for who they really are. If you can’t, then how can you know them with any depth?”
8. Why is Heather Plett’s comment mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To explain the definition of “holding space”.
B. To indicate the challenges of “holding space”.
C. To reveal historical facts about “holding space”.
D. To present the skills required for “holding space”.
9. What does “radical acceptance” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A skill to keep distance with others.
B An effective way to process your emotions.
C. An ability to find opportunity in adversity.
D. An emotional reaction to the cruel reality.
10. What does Brodkin advise us to do?
A. Stop being affected by others’comments.
B. Pick an investment account.
C. Build a healthy relationship with others.
D. Show the greatest tolerance to others.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. “Holding Space”: A Practice of Forgiving Others
B. “Holding Space”: The Art of Supportive Relationships
C The Power of “Holding Space” to Get Out of Trouble
D. The Benefits of “Holding Space” in Changing Oneself

It’s picking season at Christian Nachtwey’s farm in western Germany and laborers are loading their vehicles with apples. But Nachtwey’s farm is also getting a second harvest: Many of the apple trees grow under solar panels (电池板) that have been producing electricity, while providing the fruit below with much-needed shade.
“The idea is simple,” said Nachtwey. “To protect the farm, without reducing the available growing surface and in particular maintaining production, on top of that, there’s the solar electricity being produced on the same land.” Setting up solar panels on farmland is becoming increasingly popular, as farmers seek to make the most of their land and establish a second source of income.
Getting the right mix of crop and solar is hard, because modern fruit varieties are finely used to particular growing conditions. Any change can break the balance, costing farmers’ income if their fruit is damaged or not as sweet as consumers like. That’s why Nachtwey is cooperating with researchers to test which apple varieties thrive (旺盛) under the solar panels, and which types of solar panels are best suited for the farm. To compare the results, some trees are covered with a traditional net normally used to protect crops from hail (冰雹).
Juergen Zimmer, an expert in charge of the test, said the apples grown under the solar panels were slightly less sweet this year than those under the traditional nets. But hardly any of the solar-shaded apples got damaged in the strong sunlight that hit the region on July 24 this year, while up to 18% of the uncovered fruit suffered sunburn that day, he said. “We need at least two to three full years to record all the weather conditions that might occur, and look at the output and color that the different varieties of tree produce,” said Zimmer.
Researchers hope the test will show that tree fruit crops thrive under solar panels. This could help prevent renewable energy production from competing (竞争) for precious land with agriculture — a growing concern for those seeking to deal with climate change and rising food prices.
12. What can we know about the idea of putting solar panels on the farm?
A. Trees provide solar panels with much-needed shade.
B. Farmers grow fewer trees as solar panels cover the land.
C. Solar panels significantly decrease the output of apples.
D. The model makes it possible for farmers to make extra profits.
13. What may happen if Nachtwey doesn’t get the right mix of crop and solar?
A. The apples’ quality will be influenced.
B. Solar panels may not work.
C. The panels will be damaged.
D. Farmers may get higher incomes.
14. What does Juergen Zimmer find in the test?
A. A net can protect crops from hail.
B. The panels prevent apples from sunburn.
C. Solar-shaded apples have a better taste.
D. Sunburn does more harm to apples than hail.
15. What is the main topic of the text?
A. Solar panels compete with crops for land.
B. A farmer establishes solar panels on the farmland.
C. Solar panels provide renewable energy for agriculture.
D. Experts fight against climate change and rising food prices.

How Taking Short Vacations Can Improve Your Well-Being at Work
Without doubt, the nonstop demands of work and life can be bad for your well-being, exhausting (使筋疲力尽) your physical resources and cognitive (认知的) abilities — and possibly resulting in negative health and performance results.
____16____ Research shows that vacations improve our physical and mental health while also promoting our performance at work. Perhaps surprisingly, they can even increase the likelihood of receiving a pay raise or promotion.
____17____ In fact, nearly half of U. S. workers take less time off than their job allows, leaving an average of 9.5 days of paid time off (PTO) on the table, according to a 2023 survey by the Pew Research Center. And for 30 percent of employees, this unused vacation time doesn’t roll over to the next year. ____18____ taking mini-vacations throughout the year can improve their overall well-being. That means you can just use a long weekend to explore a new small town in your state, go camping in a national park, or do a biking tour of your local wineries.
We know that being on vacation feels good and that it’s good for us. ____19____ Naturally, there is the spend, and the bill involved in long trips — room, board, airfare, rail, sightseeing, everything — can be daunting ____20____ The Pew survey of over 5,900 U.S. workers found that 49 percent of participants indicated they worried they might fall behind at work if they take more vacation time.
No wonder, then, that most people don’t use all their vacation time. And over half (52 percent) of U.S. employees work while on vacation.
A. If working hard is the way to earn more bread,
B. Even if many workers don’t use all their PTO,
C. Taking a real break is important for so many reasons.
D. But that doesn’t mean we always use our vacation time.
E. So why don’t we choose to take all the time we’ve earned?
F. Do you know when people need to take short vacations?
G. It also turns out that taking extended time away from the office causes a lot of stress.

My son Tom was about to go to college. He wanted to leave home and be independent. However, I was worried that he might not take good care of himself when I wasn’t around.
One day, my wife, Lisa, found two lonely, hungry raccoon (浣熊) babies in the woods and brought them home. I didn’t like them, but I knew I had to take care of them. I cleaned them, made a bed for them, and fed them. The next morning, they woke up shortly after Lisa left for work. I had my own work to do — writing books at home. “Will you feed them?” I asked Tom. “Sorry, I’m late for school,” he replied.
Later, I asked an expert about raising raccoon babies. “The goal is to take care of them until they can go back to the woods and take care of themselves. This fall, they’ll be old enough to be on their own,” he said. After that, I became a day-care “mom” for them and named them Bob and Billy. Soon, they could eat bananas. When July came, I built a cage and moved them outdoors.
When they adapted well Tom suggested we let them explore the woods and look for food. “What if they get lost or hurt?” I said. “They need to get used to being on their own,” Tom insisted. We left their door open so they could wander during the day. At night, we called them home by hitting their food bowls.
Still, I was worried. One afternoon, in the yard, I saw Bob standing on a tree, eating bananas. “Be careful,” I called, rushing for a ladder. “Let him go,” Tom said. “He’s on an adventure. Don’t affect his fun. Your worry will cost him his survival skills.”
When September came, the raccoons were six-pound creatures with ringed tails. One evening, they didn’t come home. Tom laughed at my concern. The next morning, they returned, looking healthy and happy.
Near the end of September, they were missing for a week. I thought they were probably gone forever. “It’s a mistake to hold on to anything that no longer needs you,” Lisa said. “What if they’re in trouble?” I worried.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

As the list was out, Kent felt the excitement built.
C It mainly involved memorizing old songs.

B. An effective way to process your emotions.
C. An ability to find opportunity in adversity.
D. An emotional reaction to the cruel reality.
10. What does Brodkin advise us to do?
A. Stop being affected by others’comments.
B. Pick an investment account.
C. Build a healthy relationship with others.
D. Show the greatest tolerance to others.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. “Holding Space”: A Practice of Forgiving Others
B. “Holding Space”: The Art of Supportive Relationships
C. The Power of “Holding Space” to Get Out of Trouble
D. The Benefits of “Holding Space” in Changing Oneself
A 9. B 10. C 11. B
根据第二段中“The term ‘holding space’ was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blog post, Plett described holding space as ‘the act of being fully present with someone else, without judgment or distraction, so that the person can share their experiences and perspectives.’(“为某人留空间”这一术语最早由加拿大作家希瑟·普莱特普及。在2015年的一篇博客文章中,普莱特将“为某人留空间”描述为“与他人完全同在的行为,不加评判或分心,以便对方能够分享他们的经历和观点”)”可知,第二段提到Heather Plett的解释是为了说明“为某人留空间”的定义。故选A项。
根据第三段中“It also requires radical acceptance, a release of your ideas about who the other person should or can be, and openness and honesty about who they actually are.(它还需要radical acceptance,即释放你对另一个人应该或可以成为谁的想法,以及对他们实际上是谁的开放和坦诚)”可推知,radical acceptance指的是一种对他人真实身份的接纳,不带有预设或偏见,接受他人的真实状态,这更像是一种处理我们对他人的情绪和反应的有效方式,以便我们能更好地为他们留出空间。与B项“An effective way to process your emotions.(处理情绪的有效方法)”含义一致。
根据最后一段中“As Brodkin puts it, ‘It’s a way of investing in your relationship, developing it and enabling it to grow. In order for the relationship to grow, you need to be able to see them for who they really are. If you can’t, then how can you know them with any depth?’(正如布罗德金所说,‘这是一种投资于你的关系、发展它并使它成长的方式。

C 17. D 18. B 19. E 20. G

“largest(最大的)”、“most complete(最完整的)”和“youngest(最年轻的)”是三个并列的形容词最高级,用并列连词and连接。故填and。
的数量”含义,应是“the number of”。故填the。
故填was listed。
“___6____ (earn) the nickname of...”
故填to discover。
故填who/that。
“one of+the+most+adj.+名词复数”,意为“最……之一”,因此,这里用名词复数。故填wetlands。
【45题详解】
考查形容词。句意:它堪称环境与生态保护的成功典范。根据并列连词“and”可推知,这里应是形容词,与之后的形容词“ecological(生态的)”并列共同修饰名词“conservation(保护)”,environment的形容词形式为environmental。故填environmental。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When they adapted well, Tom suggested we let them explore the woods and look for food.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Weeks later, Lisa, Tom, and I were in the yard
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Hey, Tom, should we get Bob a banana?” I asked, but Tom shook his head and said, “No!”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Weeks later, Lisa, Tom, and I were in the yard preparing to plant some flowers. Suddenly, a familiar ringed tail popped out from behind the maple tree — Bob! He trotted over, followed by Billy, both carrying small branches in their mouths as if showing off their finds. My heart leaped; I’d almost forgotten how soft their fur felt. They nuzzled my hand lightly before darting to the bird feeder, quick and agile, nothing like the tiny, helpless babies we’d rescued months ago.
“Hey, Tom, should we get Bob a banana?” I asked, but Tom shook his head and said, “No!” He nodded at Bob, who was already climbing the feeder to grab a sunflower seed. “See? He doesn’t need our bananas anymore. He’s learned to feed himself.” I watched Bob crack the seed with his paws, a skill he’d never had when we fed him by hand. For the first time, I understood — letting go wasn’t losing, but letting them grow. Just like Tom, soon to leave for college, he’d find his way too. I smiled, feeling the worry in my chest melt away.
