If you watch closely, you’ll see that as your cat falls asleep, her breathing becomes slow and regular and her body still. She has entered the first stage of sleep, called slow-wave sleep. After about 15 minutes you’ll notice a change in her breathing. Her paws and whiskers twitch (抽动) and she flicks an ear. Fluffy has entered REM (Rapid Eye Movement), or dreaming stage of sleep. Although she twitches and makes little grunting noises, messages from her brain to the large muscles in her legs are blocked, so she can’t run about. She is in a state of “sleep paralysis”. Back in 1963, Michel Jouvet, a French scientist who was studying sleep in cats, interrupted their sleep paralysis. Even though they were completely asleep, the dreaming cats began to chase balls that Jouvet couldn’t see and arched their backs at invisible enemies. He figured he was watching them act out their dreams! What were they dreaming about? Mostly, the dreaming cats seemed to be practicing important cat skills: stalking, pouncing and fighting. In another study, neuroscientist Matt Wilson recorded rats’ brain waves while they learned mazes (迷宫). One day, he left the brain-wave-recording machine on while the rats fell asleep. The pattern of brain waves in the sleeping rats matched the pattern from the maze so closely that Wilson could figure out exactly which part of the maze each rat was dreaming about! Many researchers now think that in both people and animals, one purpose of dreams is to practice important skills and figure out recent learning. This may explain why so many people dream about fighting and escaping, skills that were probably important to our ancestors, and why dreaming affects our ability to learn. Do all animals dream? From looking at the brain waves of sleeping animals, scientists think that all mammals dream, but reptiles, fish, and invertebrates (无脊椎动物) don’t. (They’re not sure about birds.) 1. What can we know about “sleep paralysis”? A. It’s the initial step of sleep. B. It features slow-wave sleep. C. It is in a motionless state. D. It refers to the dreaming stage. 2. In Michel Jouvet’s study, when cats were dreaming, they were ______. A. exercising basic skills. B. playing with balls. C. recording brain waves. D. learning mazes. 3. What would be the suitable title of the text? A. Fido and Fluffy. B. Do Animals Dream? C. What is Sleep Paralysis? D. Stages of Animal Sleep. D 2. A 3. 根据第一段中的“Fluffy has entered REM (Rapid Eye Movement), or dreaming stage of sleep. Although she twitches and makes little grunting noises, messages from her brain to the large muscles in her legs are blocked, so she can’t run about. She is in a state of “sleep paralysis”. (Fluffy已经进入了快速眼动睡眠阶段,也就是做梦的睡眠阶段。尽管她会抽搐并发出轻微的咕哝声,但大脑传递到腿部大肌肉的信号被阻断了,所以她无法四处跑动。她处于“睡眠瘫痪”状态。)”可知,睡眠瘫痪属于做梦阶段。故选D项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“What were they dreaming about? Mostly, the dreaming cats seemed to be practicing important cat skills: stalking, pouncing and fighting.(它们在梦到什么?大多数情况下,做梦的猫似乎在练习重要的猫科动物技能:潜行、猛扑和打斗。)”可知,Michel Jouvet的研究中,猫做梦时在锻炼基本技能。故选A项。 From looking at the brain waves of sleeping animals, scientists think that all mammals dream, but reptiles, fish, and invertebrates (无脊椎动物) don’t.(所有动物都会做梦吗?通过观察睡眠中动物的脑电波,科学家认为所有哺乳动物都会做梦,但爬行动物、鱼类和无脊椎动物不会。)”可知,文章围绕动物是否会做梦展开,介绍了相关研究和结论,所以“动物做梦吗”概括了文章的主题,适合作为标题。故选B项。 B After 7 long years since the cute cat named Chebon went missing, there was little hope that it could be found. Robert probably already came to peace with the thought that he would never see his little friend again until he received a life-changing call. Clearly, a kind stranger reached out to tell him that his beloved cat was safe and sound and couldn’t wait to see him again! The cat went missing years ago, right before Robert was planning on moving from California to Ohio. The sad owner decided to give up his plans and stayed in California for the whole year looking for his missing friend, but in vain. “I remember at one point I was praying and I said, ‘God, I’ll do anything, just bring my Chebon back…’”, Robert said in a video posted on the Ventura County Animal Services. The cat seemed to have disappeared forever and Robert had no other choice than to move on. Then 7 years later, a woman noticed a cat that looked ill, so she decided to catch the animal and take him to the vet (兽医). Luckily, the cat she found had a microchip (微型芯片), and in an instant, they knew who the owner of the 19-year-old cat was. That’s when Robert received a call saying that his cat was alive. “I was afraid there was some kind of mistake,” Robert said in the reunion video. The man decided to ride on a plane and fly all the way from Los Angeles to see his old friend. After finally seeing the cat, Robert immediately recognized his cat and burst into tears. After all these years, the two friends were back together. The touching moment was recorded by the animal shelter and was quickly spread on the Internet, leaving so many people in tears. 4. What happened to Chebon 7 years ago? A. It was ill. B. It was hurt in an accident. C. It was lost. D. It was taken to the animal shelter. 5. What does “in vain” mean in paragraph 2? A. without success. B. for no reason. C. in no time. D. at no cost. 6. How did Robert feel when he received the call? A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Peaceful. D. Hopeless. 7. What is the main idea of the passage? A. A video moved many people. B. A cat was saved by a woman. C. A man reunited with his missing cat. D. A man kept looking for his cat for 7 years. C 5. A 6. A 7. 根据文章第一段“After 7 long years since the cute cat named Chebon went missing, there was little hope that it could be found.(这只名叫Chebon的可爱猫咪失踪7年之后,找到它的希望渺茫)”可知,Chebon于七年前走丢。 根据文章第二段“The cat seemed to have disappeared forever and Robert had no other choice than to move on.(那只猫似乎永远消失了,罗伯特别无选择,只能继续前进)”可知,Robert苦寻无果,所以“in vain”与“without success”意义相近,故选A。 根据文章第四段“I was afraid there was some kind of mistake.(我担心会出什么差错)”可推断,Robert 对改电话持怀疑态度。故选A。 C。 C L. A new study has found that they are leaving their natural environment to escape noisy ship refueling (补给燃料) activities. The African penguins once mainly raised babies on this island. But the population has dropped sharply since South Africa started permitting ships in the area to refuel at sea six years ago, the study found. Lorien Pichegru is acting director of the Coastal and Marine Research Institute at Nelson Mandela University, which led the study. She said the organization had found that noise levels in the area had doubled since the refueling activities began. Scientists say high noise levels affect the ability of penguins to find and catch other animals for food. Noise also makes it more difficult for them to communicate with each other and map travel paths. ‌“This year we are at 1,200 breeding pairs at St Croix from 8,500 pairs in 2016,” Pichegru said. The study recently appeared in the publication Science of the Total Environment. The researchers said the study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on a seabird. Nelson Mandela University’s study collected some data to estimate underwater noise from passing ships. Oil-covered penguins were found in 2019 in Algoa Bay after an oil spill from ship-to-ship refueling. Environmental groups have called for the activities to be banned in the bay. Pichegru said penguins in the area were already struggling to survive because of a series of issues, including industrial fishing activities. She added that the refueling activities did not kill all the penguins. However, ‌“It was just the thing that made the whole ecology tip over and then the penguins couldn’t cope with that,” she said. 12 What has the new study found about penguins? A. They have difficulty in raising babies. B. They can get used to noisy ships easily. C. Their population is on the increase. D. They are forced to leave the natural environment. 13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The value of Lorien Pichegru’s job. B. The importance of ship refueling activities. C. The ability of Penguins to find food. D. Bad effects of noises on Penguins. 14. What might Pichegru agree with? A. The penguins should be put in control. B. Fishing activities should be greatly encouraged. C. Refueling activities should be strictly managed. D. The penguins should develop their survival abilities. 15. Where is this text most likely from? A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A textbook. D. A magazine. D 13. D 14. C 15. 根据文章第一段“The African penguin lives on St. Croix island off the east coast of South Africa. A new study has found that they are leaving their natural environment to escape noisy ship refueling (补给燃料) activities.(这种非洲企鹅生活在南非东海岸的圣克罗伊岛。一项新的研究发现,他们正在离开他们的自然环境,以逃避嘈杂的船舶加油活动。)”可知研究发现为了躲避嘈杂的噪音,企鹅们被迫离开了它们的自然环境。故选D项。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“She said the organization had found that noise levels in the area had doubled since the refueling activities began. Scientists say high noise levels affect the ability of penguins to find and catch other animals for food. Noise also makes it more difficult for them to communicate with each other and map travel paths.(她说,该组织发现,自加油活动开始以来,该地区的噪音水平翻了一番。科学家表示,高噪音水平会影响企鹅寻找和捕捉其他动物作为食物的能力。噪音也使它们之间的交流和绘制旅行路线变得更加困难。)”可知文章第三段主要讲的是噪音对于企鹅的不好影响。故选D项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Pichegru said penguins in the area were already struggling to survive because of a series of issues, including industrial fishing activities. She added that the refueling activities did not kill all the penguins. However, “It was just the thing that made the whole ecology tip over and then the penguins couldn’t cope with that,” she said.( Pichegru说,由于工业捕鱼活动等一系列问题,该地区的企鹅已经难以生存。她补充说,加油活动并没有杀死所有的企鹅。然而,“这是一件让整个生态系统崩溃的事情,而企鹅无法应对,”她说。)”可以推断Pichegru认为嘈杂的船舶加油活动是一件最终会让企鹅的无法面对的事情,所以她应该赞同对这一类活动进行严格管理。故选C项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The study recently appeared in the publication Science of the Total Environment. The researchers said the study is the first to explore the effects of ocean traffic noise pollution on a seabird.(这项研究最近发表在《全环境科学》杂志上。研究人员表示,这项研究是首次探索海洋交通噪音污染对海鸟的影响。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲的是一项新的研究发现为了逃避嘈杂的船舶加油活动,生活在南非东海岸附近的圣克罗伊岛的非洲企鹅正在离开它们的自然环境,所以文章最有可能出自一篇杂志。故选D项。 三、阅读七选五:本题共5小题,共12.5分。 Win and Lose with Grace During my years as an early childhood teacher, I learned very quickly which children were driven to be the best—the winner. Some children were not especially bothered by losing, whereas others turned every opportunity into a competition. ____16____. However, we can help our children learn to handle it. ●Acknowledge disappointment from losing Teach your child that it’s okay to feel disappointed after losing. ____17____. Some children may be ready to jump back in and play again. Others may need to ask for a hug, spend a little time alone, or read a book to calm down. It is never okay to say mean words about others. ●____18____ Share with your child that even if they feel upset or disappointed, they can congratulate those who did win. Find meaningful ways to be a good loser. Share a praise with other players to let them know something they did was really positive. Thinking about others’ feelings can often help children manage their own (e.g., “They worked really hard-just like me!”). ●Talk about luck and chance Some games take very little effort to win or lose, relying mostly on chance. Talk with children about luck and chance and let them know that sometimes you choose cards that help you win and sometimes you don’t. ____19____. ●Focus on effort ____20____. When children are preparing for a competition, praise them for how hard they worked. Focus on effort even after a competition ends whether your child won or lost. This encourages children to recognize that they can improve and grow, making it more likely that they will try again. A. Share praises with others B. Practice good sportsmanship C. Don’t make winning or losing too big of a deal D. There are different ways to express that feeling E. It can feel harder to lose at a game that relies on personal or team performance than lose a game based on chance F. This is not your fault and does not reflect who you are G. Managing feelings that come with losing can be challenging 【答案】16. G 17. D 18. B 19. F 20. 文章讲述了几个帮助孩子体面地接受输赢的方式, 【16题详解】 前文“Some children were not especially bothered by losing, whereas others turned every opportunity into a competition.(有些孩子并没有因为输而特别烦恼,而另一些孩子则把每一个机会都变成了一场比赛。)” 后文“However, we can help our children learn to handle it.(然而,我们可以帮助我们的孩子学会处理它。)” 【17题详解】 前文“Teach your child that it’s okay to feel disappointed after losing.(教你的孩子直到失败后感到失望是没关系的。)” 后文“Some children may be ready to jump back in and play again. Others may need to ask for a hug, spend a little time alone, or read a book to calm down.(有些孩子可能已经准备好跳回去再玩了。其他人可能需要一个拥抱,花一点时间独处,或者读一本书来平静下来。)”讲述了不同的孩子在输掉后的不同反应。所以空处应是说有不同的表达失望情绪的方式,D项“有不同的方式来表达这种感觉”承上启下,选项中的that feeling对应前文中的feel disappointed。故选D。 【18题详解】 空处是本段小标题。结合上下文可知,这里应用祈使句。根据本段中的“Share with your child that even if they feel upset or disappointed, they can congratulate those who did win. Find meaningful ways to be a good loser. (告诉你的孩子,即使他们感到沮丧或失望,他们也可以祝贺那些获胜的人。找到有意义的方法来做一个好的失败者。)”可知,本段主要讲述了即使自己失败了,也要礼貌地祝贺其他获胜的人,体面地失败,这表达了良好的体育精神。B项“践行良好的体育精神”最能概括本段内容。故选B。 【19题详解】 前文“Talk with children about luck and chance and let them know that sometimes you choose cards that help you win and sometimes you don’t.(与孩子们谈论运气和机会,让他们知道有时你会选择有助于你获胜的牌,有时你不会。)” 【20题详解】 根据本段小标题“Focus on effort(专注于努力)”和后文“When children are preparing for a competition, praise them for how hard they worked. Focus on effort even after a competition ends whether your child won or lost.(当孩子们准备比赛时,要表扬他们的努力。即使在比赛结束后,无论你的孩子赢了还是输了,都要关注努力。)”讲述了在比赛前后要关注孩子所付出的努力,E项“在一场依赖个人或团队表现的比赛中失利要比基于运气而在一场比赛中失败更难受。”强调了在付出努力的比赛中失败要比因运气不佳而失败会让人更难受,照应小标题中的“effort”,且选项中的a game与下文中的a competition相对应。故选E。 四、完形填空:本题共15小题,共15分。 My family went on holiday for a week this summer. In summer, my brother Harry and I would run through a stand of oak trees to skip stones there. The pond wore a collar of black mud. It was not a place for swimming. In late summer, the pond would be covered by a green and bubbly scum(起泡的浮渣). Sometimes a strong, unpleasant smell rose from it. We stayed away. When winter came, the pond was once again an inviting place. One day when ice covered it, Harry said to me, “Try walking across.” The ice looked solid. No water showed through it, but I hesitated. “Go ahead.” Harry urged. “Try it. You’re lighter than I am. If the ice holds, we can run and slide carefully on it. It’ll be fun.” I wanted to please Harry, and I thought about the fun of a long slide on the ice. I began to slide across the pond. In the middle of the pond, the ice gave way with a sudden crack(裂缝)! I stretched out(伸展)my arms. The next thing I knew I was hanging on to the edge of a hole in the ice by arms outstretched on the ice. From my shoulders down I hung in icy water. I thought of the bottom of the pond. I knew it would be black and awful down there, full of mud and maybe rotting creatures. I tried to climb out of the hole, but when I got a knee on the ice, it broke like window glass. Again and again I tried to get out. Again and again the ice broke into pieces. The hole widened. I was wearing a coat of heavy material. As it became completely wet, it dragged me down. I was tired of the struggle and rested with my arms stretched out on the ice. I looked at Harry on shore. He seemed rooted to the spot. “I can’t get out!” I screamed when I caught some breath. Paragraph1: Harry turned and ran from the pond. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2: The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】He turned and ran from the pond. Staring at his familiar figure out of sight, I wondered:“Is he running for help, or is he running away and leaving me sliding to the bottom? ” After what seemed to be centuries of waiting, I was on the edge of collapse. Suddenly, Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped. He pushed the branch toward me. I grabbed it immediately and was eventually dragged out of the icy water by Harry. What a narrow escape! We stumbled home, with my clothes dripping water. The moment I crashed through the kitchen door, sobbing, mum rushed over. She helped me take off my coat, and gave me a quick bath, then passed me a cup of milk to warm me up.I tearfully complained to her about all that had happened and Harry was blamed for getting me sibling into such a trouble. His head drooping, Harry murdered an apology to me. I was comforted and relieved, but in fact, the pond was still attractive to young Harry and me, especially when winter came again. 如:run away, leave sb. doing, take off等高级词汇;非限制性定语从句Harry came back with a branch, which was large, black, and v-shaped,after引导的时间状语从句,with my clothes dripping water复合结构等高级句式。 1.Where does the conversation most probably take place? Mostly the dreaming cats seemed to be practicing important cat skills: stalking, pouncing and fighting. C What is Sleep Paralysis? D. Stages of Animal Sleep. B After 7 long years since the cute cat named Chebon went missing, there was little hope that it could be found. Then 7 years later a woman noticed a cat that looked ill, so she decided to catch the animal and take him to the vet (兽医). C L. 12. What has the new study found about penguins? C. A textbook. D. A magazine. Win and Lose with Grace During my years as an early childhood teacher, I learned very quickly which children were driven to be the best—the winner. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
