Growing up on the Guanzhong Plain, He Jing didn’t start mountaineering until 18. Her first climb, in 2006, was in the Qinling Mountains, and it sparked a passion for the sport.
In 2012, feeling sad for the loss of her grandmother, He attempted her first mountain over 5,000 meters — Mount Siguniang in Sichuan province. The experience provided her with a sense of peace and relief. “As I approached the summit (顶峰) and saw the rosy light on the snow, I found peace and a release from my inner confusion,” she recalled.
Since then, He has been devoted to climbing high-altitude peaks. She summited her first 8,000-meter peak, Mount Cho Oyu, in 2016, using just one bottle of oxygen. Realizing she could handle the extreme altitude (海拔), she decided to attempt future climbs without oxygen, a move partly motivated by cost savings. Climbing without oxygen carries significant risks due to the thin atmosphere at high altitudes. To prepare, He trained strictly, running at least five times a week, climbing 200 flights of stairs with a 20-kilogram load twice weekly, and using an oxygen-restricting mask to simulate high-altitude conditions.
“At altitudes above 8,000 meters, the human brain experiences extreme lack of oxygen, and the body becomes sleepy. I kept telling myself not to fall asleep, as I might never wake up again,” she said. Her first successful summit without bottled oxygen came on Sept. 25, 2017, when she reached the top of Mount Manaslu in Nepal.
On Oct. 9 this year, she reached the summit of the 8,027-meter Mount Shishapangma in China’s Xizang autonomous region, becoming the first person from China and the third woman in the world to scale all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters without the use of additional oxygen.
4. What motivated He to attempt her climbing in 2012?
A. Her enthusiasm for climbing.
B. Her desire to challenge herself.
C. Her sorrow for losing her grandmother.
D. Her determination to handle the extreme altitude.
5. How did He prepare herself for climbing without additional oxygen?
A. By running four or five times a week.
B. By training in high-altitude conditions.
C. By climbing stairs with loads regularly.
D. By wearing a mask with adequate oxygen.
6. Which of the following words best describe He?
A. Energetic and sociable. B. Determined and passionate.
C. Demanding and humble. D. Strong-willed and friendly.
7. What does He’s experience tell us?
A. Look before you leap. B. More haste (匆忙), less speed.
C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. B 7. D

“Turn off, tune out and drop in.” That’s the message to customers at a Dutch digital detox (戒瘾) cafe who are paying for the privilege of leaving their phones at the door. The Offline Club, which began life in Amsterdam, offers an oasis (乐土) of calm and pause from the constant digital busyness of life lived through the black glass of a smartphone. It creates moments of quiet reflection, and encourages conversations with strangers instead of endless keyboard arguments hammered out 280 characters at a time.
With board games, a piano and books on hand, the idea is to swap recharging your device for refilling your soul, even for just a few hours. Aided by word spreading on social media, the club has already branched out to multiple cities across the Netherlands, and is now ready for an international launch.
“People love it: they tell us this is exactly what they’ve been waiting for; they can’t believe it didn’t exist already,” says co-founder Ilya Kneppelhout. “A girl called Belinda who struggled with stress and anxiety told us she hadn’t felt so at peace with herself in a year and a half.”
Customers switch between time to themselves and time to connect. “People don’t just pay to get rid of their phones-they’re also paying to meet others,” says Kneppelhout. “We live in quite an isolated world where we’re more connected online, but in the physical world, it’s hard to meet people.”
He’s already had a group of digital downtime followers in the UK, where Georgina Sturmer, who has worked with clients experiencing over-dependence on phones, points out another benefit of a switched-off society. “We are constantly at risk of having every word or image captured and shared,” she says. “This sense of being endlessly photographed is something that has come with these devices being in our lives so much. Wouldn’t it be great to feel safe knowing it doesn’t matter if we’re having a bad hair day, or don’t really like our outfit?”
8. What can we know about the Dutch digital detox cafe?
A. It is the first cafe in Amsterdam. B. Interaction among people is advocated.
C. Only black smartphones are allowed there. D. Customers have to type 280 characters nonstop.
9. How did the cafe become more and more popular?
A. By media’s advertising. B. By netizens’ commenting online.
C. By employees’ handing out leaflets. D. By customers’ word-of-mouth promoting.
10. Why is Belinda mentioned in the third paragraph?
A. To show the effect of the cafe. B. To explain the cause of her anxiety.
C. To stress the seriousness of her situation. D. To introduce the problem of modern people.
11. What is Georgina Sturmer’s attitude towards the cafe?
A. Ambiguous. B. Concerned. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. C

D
The science of why insects gather around lights at night has never been nailed down. Popular theories propose that moths and other insects navigate (导航) by the moon and mistake lamps for moonlight, or that the insects fly towards light to escape coming danger. Now researchers believe they have a more convincing answer: contrary to current theories, insects are not attracted to light from far away, but become trapped if they fly close to an artificial light source.
According to Dr Sam Fabian, study co-author and Imperial College London entomologist, moths and many other insects that fly at night evolved to tilt (倾斜) their backs to wherever is brightest. For hundreds of millions of years, this was the sky rather than the ground. The trick told insects which way was up and ensured they flew level. But then came artificial lighting. Moths found themselves tilting their backs to street lamps. This caused them to circle around the lamps endlessly, the insects trapped by their evolution.
Fabian and his colleagues filmed insect flight paths around lights in the lab. The videos reveal that time and again, moths and dragonflies turned their backs to artificial lights, which appeared to greatly change their flight paths. If the light is above them, they might start orbiting it, but if it’s behind them, they start tilting backwards and end up flying in circles or diving toward the ground.
Researchers have long warned that light pollution is a big driving force in the dramatic decline in insect populations. Moths and other insects that become trapped around lamps become easily caught by bats. The artificial lighting can also fool them into thinking it is daytime, causing them to bed down and skip a night’s feeding.
There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessons from the research. “What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters. Could we change lighting environments to not trap insects? For we’re facing a massive decline in insects around the world, and artificial light at night is one of the factors that could potentially be leading to this decline,” Fabian said.
12 What do the underlined words “nailed down” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Popularized widely. B. Discussed openly.
C. Defined accurately. D. Explored academically.
13. Fabian’s study found that moths circle around the lamps endlessly because ______.
A. they can’t keep their balance.
B. they use improper flight attitude.
C. they lose track of which way is up.
D. they are attracted to lights from far away.
14. What is the significance of the research finding?
A. It may lead to better conservation of insects.
B. Natural enemies of insects will be got rid of.
C. Artificial lighting will be greatly reduced at night.
D. It may raise concerns for insects’ eating behavior.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why insects lose their ability to fly at night.
B. Why artificial light and evolution trap insects.
C. How artificial light impacts insect populations.
D. How insects evolved distinct strategies of flight.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据划线短语下文“Popular theories propose that moths and other insects navigate (导航) by the moon and mistake lamps for moonlight, or that the insects fly towards light to escape coming danger. Now researchers believe they have a more convincing answer(流行的理论认为,飞蛾和其他昆虫是靠月亮导航的,它们把灯误认为是月光,或者是昆虫为了躲避即将到来的危险而飞向光明。现在研究人员相信他们有了一个更有说服力的答案)”可知,对于昆虫为何会在夜间聚集在灯光周围这一问题没有标准答案,故可推知划线短语所在句意为“昆虫为何会在夜间聚集在灯光周围,这一科学问题从未得到明确解释”,推测划线短语nailed down意为“明确解释”,与Defined accurately意义相近。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to Dr Sam Fabian, study co-author and Imperial College London entomologist, moths and many other insects that fly at night evolved to tilt (倾斜) their backs to wherever is brightest. For hundreds of millions of years, this was the sky rather than the ground. The trick told insects which way was up and ensured they flew level. But then came artificial lighting. Moths found themselves tilting their backs to street lamps. This caused them to circle around the lamps endlessly, the insects trapped by their evolution.(该研究的合著者、伦敦帝国理工学院的昆虫学家萨姆·法比安博士说,飞蛾和许多其他在夜间飞行的昆虫进化成向最亮的地方倾斜背部。数百万年来,这是天空,而不是地上。这个把戏告诉昆虫哪条路是向上的,并确保它们飞得水平。但后来出现了人工照明。飞蛾发现自己把背靠在路灯上。这导致它们无休止地绕着灯转,这些昆虫被它们的进化困住了)”可知,法比安的研究发现,飞蛾在灯周围无休止地盘旋,因为它们不知道哪条路是向上的。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“There are, Fabian believes, helpful lessons from the research. ‘What this tells us is that the direction of artificial light matters. Could we change lighting environments to not trap insects? For we’re facing a massive decline in insects around the world, and artificial light at night is one of the factors that could potentially be leading to this decline,’ Fabian said.(Fabian相信,这项研究有一些有益的教训。‘这告诉我们,人造光的方向很重要。我们能不能改变照明环境,让昆虫不被困住?因为我们正面临着全球昆虫数量的大幅下降,而夜间的人造光是可能导致这种下降的因素之一,’ Fabian说)”可推知,这项研究结果的意义是告诉我们可以改变人造光的方向,使昆虫不被困住,从而更好地保护昆虫。故选A。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Now researchers believe they have a more convincing answer: contrary to current theories, insects are not attracted to light from far away, but become trapped if they fly close to an artificial light source.(现在研究人员相信他们有了一个更有说服力的答案:与目前的理论相反,昆虫不会被远处的光吸引,但如果它们飞得离人造光源很近,就会被困住)”可知,文章主要介绍了一项对昆虫夜晚趋光的研究,研究发现昆虫被进化困住,无休止地围绕人工照明转,这启示我们可以改变人造光的方向,更好地保护昆虫,所以B项“为什么人造光和进化会困住昆虫?”符合题意。故选B。

Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year. He carried a secret burden: a stutter (口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset. Shy and reserved. Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble. Jack's science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack's stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he would shy away when called upon to speak.
Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities. Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods to help him. She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter. Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring, "You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words, Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue. Day by day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency.
One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science project in front of the class. Jack's heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him. How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they would laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack's anxiety mounted. Then came the big day. He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentation with confidence and backed to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles.

Paragraph 2:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】It was finally his turn. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine's, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn't just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.

A Her enthusiasm for climbing.
